The Evans Family: Familial Relationships In George Eliot's Life And Fiction, Hailey S. Fischer Apr 2022

The Evans Family: Familial Relationships In George Eliot's Life And Fiction, Hailey S. Fischer

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Biographers of George Eliot, when writing about her childhood, have focused on her close and complicated relationships with two of the most important men in her life, her father Robert Evans and brother Isaac Evans. Less discussed are Eliot’s relationships with her immediate female family members, her mother Christiana Pearson Evans and her sister Christiana (Chrissey) Evans Clarke. This thesis reviews the predominant interpretations of Eliot’s relations with her father and brother. It also pulls together the known information about Christiana and Chrissey from several major biographies and adds new insights from Eliot's letters in combination with two of her …

The Jewish Organizations Fighting Fascism In The United States, Maya Leibold Apr 2022

The Jewish Organizations Fighting Fascism In The United States, Maya Leibold

Honors Theses

Recent years have shown a rising trend in fascist and antisemitic actions and attitudes in the United States. In response to this trend, communities have organized into various nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) committed to mobilizing people to combat fascism and antisemitism as they see it. An analysis of these organizations’ methods and varying degrees of success will offer a blueprint for future action against fascism. Due to their historical connection to this type of mobilization against fascism, this research will be focused on Jewish-led and organized NGOs. NGOs are often the first to call attention to actions by groups and states …

Behold Your Mother: Wives And Mothers As Partners In Christ's Priestly Mission, Jordan Mccormick Apr 2022

Behold Your Mother: Wives And Mothers As Partners In Christ's Priestly Mission, Jordan Mccormick

Honors Theses

This research explores the Catholic Church's teaching on the priesthood of the laity and, specifically, how the lay priesthood of women, as wives and mothers, works in tandem with and complements the ordained priesthood. The concept of lay priesthood is rooted in our baptism - where we are invited into and given the power to participate in Jesus Christ's priesthood through our own prayers and sacrifices, our ministering to others, etc. In this study, the lives of five lay women from the 19th and 20th centuries, who are either canonized saints in the Church or who are on their way …

Towards A "Pedagogy Of Beauty": The New Evangelization, English Education, And Renewal Of The Catholic School, Elena Niese Apr 2022

Towards A "Pedagogy Of Beauty": The New Evangelization, English Education, And Renewal Of The Catholic School, Elena Niese

Honors Theses

In the complex cultural landscape of the modern world, evangelization, or the proclamation of the Gospel, cannot look the same as it once did. In 1975, Pope Paul VI addressed this need for renewal, calling for a “new evangelization.” Subsequent popes, including Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, have continued to place this missionary impulse at the forefront of their initiatives. Yet, despite this emphasis, much remains elusive. What exactly is the new evangelization? This thesis will trace the evolution of the new evangelization from its conception to today, proposing how the English educator within the Catholic school can …

Human Dignity As A Chameleon, Ariel L. Bendor, Michal Tamir Apr 2022

Human Dignity As A Chameleon, Ariel L. Bendor, Michal Tamir

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

This article offers an innovative argument, according to which courts do not interpret human dignity according to an abstract theoretical position on the nature of the value only, nor subordinate themselves to the subjective purpose of the drafters of a constitution. Thus, courts-whether in the United States, where human dignity is not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, or in countries where the right is constitutionally enshrined, such as Germany, South Africa, and Israel-interpret and apply human dignity on the basis of the entirety of the provisions of the particular constitution. Human dignity serves as a constitutional chameleon in the sense …

Fo(U)R Friends: The Social, Emotional, And Academic Effects Of An Extracurricular Program For Secondary Newcomer Students, Emma Johnson Apr 2022

Fo(U)R Friends: The Social, Emotional, And Academic Effects Of An Extracurricular Program For Secondary Newcomer Students, Emma Johnson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Research has highlighted a variety of lived experiences, special assets, and unique needs that newcomer students and English Learners (ELs) bring to our schools and communities. The United States K-12 public education system largely focuses on academic needs, failing to honor students’ strengths or address their social-emotional learning and identity development. This project is an extracurricular program model for secondary newcomer students and their peers who want to engage in community and multicultural learning, encouraging positive social, emotional, and academic growth. The project is presented in the form of a handbook. In the handbook, program leaders can find introductory lesson …

A Gospel Centered And Holistic Approach To Caring For Indivduals Experiencing Poverty, Leon Battle Apr 2022

A Gospel Centered And Holistic Approach To Caring For Indivduals Experiencing Poverty, Leon Battle

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Poverty is a major contributor of negative effects to individual health, mental health, and quality of life. The call God has for Christians is to care for individuals experiencing poverty. The question the research aims to answer is: “What elements are important to provide a holistic feeding program that meets the need of an individual physically and spiritually?” Literature on the issue of poverty, a thorough review of scriptures, as well as insights from experts in the field provided information on historical and contemporary issues affecting the poor. Data for this project was collected through a mixed methods study consisting …

Digital Islam And Muslim Millennials: How Social Media Influencers Reimagine Religious Authority And Islamic Practices, Bouziane Zaid, Jana Fedtke, Don Donghee Shin, Abdelmalek El Kadoussi, Mohammed Ibahrine Apr 2022

Digital Islam And Muslim Millennials: How Social Media Influencers Reimagine Religious Authority And Islamic Practices, Bouziane Zaid, Jana Fedtke, Don Donghee Shin, Abdelmalek El Kadoussi, Mohammed Ibahrine

All Works

Digital platforms have empowered individuals and communities to re-negotiate long-established notions of religion and authority. A new generation of social media influencers has recently emerged in the Muslim world. They are western-educated, unique storytellers, and savvy in digital media production. This raises new questions on the future of Islam in the context of emerging challenges, such as the openness of technology and the often-perceived closedness of religious and cultural systems within Muslim societies. This paper uses a multiple case research design to examine the roles of social media influencers in reimagining Islam and reshaping spiritual beliefs and religious practices among …

The Ethical Functions Of Deuteronomic Laws In Early Second Temple Judaism, Paul Cizek Apr 2022

The Ethical Functions Of Deuteronomic Laws In Early Second Temple Judaism, Paul Cizek

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study is about the ethical functions of Deuteronomic laws in the 3rd–1st centuries BCE: what they were and how to study them.Since the 1980’s boom in Hebrew Bible ethics studies, at least eight theses regarding the ethical functions of Deuteronomic laws in antiquity have become prominent. Though the scholars who advance these theses employ diverse methods, they commonly make the Deuteronomic laws themselves their direct objects of analysis, basing conclusions about how the laws functioned on the structure, logic, form, or historical and literary contexts of the laws. As Henry McKeating noted in 1979, however, how a law actually …

Rewriting The Ending: Malachi's Threat And The Destruction Of The Temple In The Gospel Of Mark, John Michael Strachan Apr 2022

Rewriting The Ending: Malachi's Threat And The Destruction Of The Temple In The Gospel Of Mark, John Michael Strachan

Dissertations (1934 -)

This is a study of the presence of the OT book of Malachi in the Gospel of Mark. The Gospel begins (1:2–3) with a conflated quotation of Mal 3:1; Exod 23:20; and Isa 40:3. Recent studies have judged that Isa 40:3 is hermeneutically influential on Mark’s presentation of Jesus. Similarly, I aim to show that Mal 3:1, with its promise of a messenger who would proceed Yahweh’s sudden arrival at the temple, is hermeneutically influential in ways heretofore not commonly recognized. The heart of my proposal is that Mark 1–13, that is, roughly three-quarters of the Gospel, is framed by …

Hidden Christians And Non-Churches: Indigenized Christian Practices In Japan, Shayne Naoyuki Yano Apr 2022

Hidden Christians And Non-Churches: Indigenized Christian Practices In Japan, Shayne Naoyuki Yano

LMU Theses and Dissertations

Throughout Christianity's tumultuous history in Japan, there have been several traditions which have stood independent from Western missionary churches. Two such traditions are the Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) and Uchimura Kanzo's Non-Church Movement. Both have interpreted Christianity in ways that make sense within their own historical and cultural contexts. Japan's Hidden Christians were forced by strict persecution to practice their faith in secret, where they developed ways to disguise their practices. Meanwhile, at the dawn of a new era of religious freedom in Japan, Uchimura Kanzo formed a new way to practice Christianity that both integrated Japanese traditions such as …

JETstream: Library Newsletter

The arrival of spring generally brings to mind thoughts and images of new beginnings, op-timism and a sense of resili-ence after a long winter’s sea-son. This current issue of JETstream seems to reflect similar sentiments. Although the JET Library continued to seamlessly provide its services to the Molloy Community throughout the pandemic, be-ing able to interact and en-gage with our students in per-son has been beyond com-pare! One of our most exciting new ventures has been the intro-duction of the Learning Com-mons into the JET Library as part of a pilot program. As ex-plained by Courtney Dalfanso, Writing Center Director, …

If These Walls Could Talk: Restoring 15th Century Paintings In Upper Mustang, Ellie Penner Apr 2022

If These Walls Could Talk: Restoring 15th Century Paintings In Upper Mustang, Ellie Penner

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Thupchen monastery, or gompa, in Lomanthang is a site that hosts monumental 15th century Buddhist artworks, which reflect an abundant history from the key trade region of Upper Mustang, Nepal. This site, after neglect and use as a storage space until the 1990s, has seen radical change in the past two decades through an ongoing painting restoration project. Since these restorations began, there have been discrepancies between how scholars and restoration artists believe the work should be done, and how the local community of Lomanthang wants their monastery to be restored. This study aims to examine why the temple …

From Green To Gold: Community Along Lines Of Trade Between Dolpo And Mustang, Jack Cantor Apr 2022

From Green To Gold: Community Along Lines Of Trade Between Dolpo And Mustang, Jack Cantor

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Mustang and Dolpo are at a tipping point of connectivity and community change as road development brings the districts closer to Nepal’s economic centers. In this independent study, I document contemporary trade relationships between Mustang’s Sangda and Dolpo’s Chharka, currently separated by three days of unmotorable trail. Through in person interview, archival research, and photography, I document methods of economy and community in three villages- Mustang’s Phelag and Sangda, and Dolpo’s Chharka. I focus upon future community prospects of Sangda and Chharka as road development between the two progresses.

As the two villages exchange goods, develop familiarity, and host traders …
