Addressing Period Poverty: The Cost Of Menstruating In America And The Ethical Responsibility To Provide Free Menstrual Care, Jayden Tabor, Olivia Delgado

Academic Festival

UNICEF estimates that every month, some 1.8 billion people across the world menstruate (UNICEF, 2020). Menstruation is a natural, healthy, and uncontrollable part of life for anyone with the female reproductive system. Me, you, your friends, your family, and everyone else on Earth would not be born if it weren’t for this routine part of life. Why, then, does society wince at the thought of periods? The effect of menstrual stigma has plagued billions of menstruators for centuries and continues to have massive negative ramifications on the wellness and livelihood of people simply trying to cope with a biological process. …

Women Writing Music: Poets And Composers From Latin America, Kimberly Grez Apr 2022

Women Writing Music: Poets And Composers From Latin America, Kimberly Grez

Recital Papers

The topic of Latin American women poets and composers is not commonly taught in the standard song literature in universities as they are not considered a part of the Western classical music canon. Instead, male poets and composers of German, Italian, French, and British descent are the focus in standard song literature. Although many of these composers have undoubtedly had an impact in music history, the Western classical music canon has neglected entire ethnic and racial groups. Thus, what is left is a predominantly-male European music history that lacks the diversity and richness of other cultures. Considering that we currently …

Sum Christiana: Perpetua's Patriarchy-Defeating Agency, Katherine Mccarthy Apr 2022

Sum Christiana: Perpetua's Patriarchy-Defeating Agency, Katherine Mccarthy

Religious Studies Honors Projects

The early Christian text, Passio sanctarum Perpetuae et Felicitatis, outlines the martyrdom of Vibia Perpetua and fellow catechumens in North Africa in 203 B.C. By looking at the original Latin text and contextualizing the story in its Carthiginian context and focusing on the words exchanged between Perpetua and her paterfamilias and the descriptions concerning them, this deeper analysis situates Perpetua’s agency. Perpetua inverts the role of the paterfamilias, which can be seen through her language choice. Moreover, Perpetua’s paterfamilias’ change in word choice reflects Perpetua’s ability to make her own choices in the male-dominated Roman society. Perpetua defies societal, gender, …

Understanding Barriers To Sexual Assault Reporting Among Undergraduate Sorority Women, Isabella Rivera

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

This study aimed to examine the correlation between knowledge of sexual health and sexual assault, and the subsequent disclosure of sexual assault amongst undergraduate women in sororities at St. John’s University. During the academic year (2019-2020), the number of reported sexual assaults on campus was discrepant among the perception of the student body, with students believing there to be a higher number of incidents than reported to the University. Possible causes of the lack of formal sexual assault reporting were investigated. This included the knowledge of undergraduate women at St. John’s University pertaining to sexual health, reproductive health, university resources, …

How Would Jesus Watch This? An Investigation Into Dance Restrictions In American Protestantism, Rebecca Lynn Huppenthal Apr 2022

How Would Jesus Watch This? An Investigation Into Dance Restrictions In American Protestantism, Rebecca Lynn Huppenthal

Theatre & Dance ETDs

In the United States there has been many disagreements concerning the place of dance within Protestant Christianity. Some denominations have banned dance entirely while other utilize dance as an essential element of worship. At the center of this argument is the understanding, treatment, and use of the physical body. Beginning in the sixteenth century through current times, I analyze specific Protestant denominations including the Puritans, Evangelical Fundamentalists, Southern Baptists, the Shakers, certain African American denominations, and Pentecostals. Additionally, I examine notable liturgical modern dancers, as well as my own choreographic work, a dance film titled Rebirth. This research displays …

Summary & Rhetorical Analysis Of Augustine’S Conversion Story, Kathleen M. Crump Apr 2022

Summary & Rhetorical Analysis Of Augustine’S Conversion Story, Kathleen M. Crump

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

For my project “St. Augustine and His Path to Conversion” I engaged in a lengthy and comprehensive writing process. To begin I read select sections of Augustine’s Confessions and annotated his work in detail. This part of the writing process was essential to begin my essay as it allowed me to engage in discussion during ASI 110 seminar and establish what exactly Augustine meant within his work. Discussion with peers and my professor, Dr. Elizabeth Mackay, really opened my eyes to the insightful and confusing nature of Augustine’s writing. After annotations and discussion I began to create an outline for …

Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held Apr 2022

Ibn Al-Jawzī’S Critique Of Sufism In Talbīs Iblīs: A Re-Examination, Pascal Held

Faculty Journal Articles

This study seeks to re-examine Ibn al-Jawzī’s (d. 597/1201) censure of Sufism in his Talbīs Iblīs, a widely-known and frequently cited, but rarely carefully considered work. The article finds that Talbīs Iblīs’ chapter devoted to Sufism does indeed constitute a scathing condemnation of the Sufi tradition, which is however by no means comprehensive and requires moreover certain specifications and clarifications. For example, is Ibn al-Jawzī’s criticism mostly limited to Sufi conduct and practice, especially in public, rather than their ideas and beliefs, and likewise does he use his criticism to highlight commendable forms of piety and mysticism, revealing that he …

Egyptian Etiquette: A Historical Rebuttal To The Genealogy Of Morals, Noah C. Evans Apr 2022

Egyptian Etiquette: A Historical Rebuttal To The Genealogy Of Morals, Noah C. Evans

Honors College Theses

In his book Genealogy of Morals, German philologist and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche posits an understanding of the origin and development of morality that stood in stark contrast to the common understanding of his day. Rather than presuming the existence of some metaphysical, objective reality to morality, Nietzsche outlines a natural development and evolution to the concepts of "Good," "Bad," and "Evil" throughout a nebulously defined period of history, focusing primarily on the psychological conditions surrounding the advent of morality. Following this, he wrote The Antichrist, in which he provided a far more specific historical framework within which the …
