Redefine The Concept Of Lone Wolf In The Context Of Global Jihad, Aly Ashghor May 2022

Redefine The Concept Of Lone Wolf In The Context Of Global Jihad, Aly Ashghor

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The purpose of this article is to conceptualize or redefine the concept of "lone wolf” in the context of global jihad. This article uses a meta-analysis approach by proposing two literature review methods, namely an effort to track a number of literatures that are the basis for defining lone wolf acts of terrorism and tracking a number of literatures that discuss the phenomenon of global jihad. This article finds that there are no acts of global jihad terrorism that operate independently, technological developments have pushed the global jihad agenda by Islamic activism on a local scale through social media as …

A Star God Is Born: Chintaku Reifujin Talismans In Japanese Religions, Sujung Kim May 2022

A Star God Is Born: Chintaku Reifujin Talismans In Japanese Religions, Sujung Kim

Religious Studies Faculty publications

This article examines a talismanic culture in Japanese religions through the case of the Chintaku reifu 鎮宅霊符 (“numinous talismans for the stabilization of residences”). Whereas previous scholarship viewed the set of seventy-two talismans as having an ancient Korean origin or connection to the Onmyōdō 陰陽道 tradition in Japan, my analysis of the talismans suggests that they arrived in Japan directly from Ming China around the late Muromachi period. Once introduced, the talismans were widely adopted across different religious traditions such as Buddhism, Shinto, Confucianism, and Shugendō under the name Chintaku reifujin 鎮宅霊符神 (the god of Chintaku reifu talismans) in Japan. …

Teaching & Learning Guide For Disability And Climate Justice, Molly M. King, Maria A. Gregg, Ana V. Martinez, Emily Y. Pachoud May 2022

Teaching & Learning Guide For Disability And Climate Justice, Molly M. King, Maria A. Gregg, Ana V. Martinez, Emily Y. Pachoud

Sociology

Disability is widespread: nearly one in four Americans has a disability (Taylor, 2018) and disability cuts across demographic categories. Among individuals aged 15 and over, 12.6% had some type of mobility disability; above age 65, it is nearly 40% (Brault, 2012). Mobility disabilities heighten vulnerability to climate change and climate-related disasters (UNHCHR, 2020). Reduced information resources and mobility, increased health risks, and a lack of visibility in climate change discourse put people with disabilities in a more vulnerable position in the climate crisis. However, this vulnerability can be mitigated through relevant and sufficient access to information, risk mitigation …

What’S In A Name? Sebus, Paul Y. Hoskisson May 2022

What’S In A Name? Sebus, Paul Y. Hoskisson

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

When I first began studying Book of Mormon proper names more than 30 years ago, the name Sebus appeared to present a Gordian knot. Hebrew words, like other Semitic words in gen- eral, are most often built on a structure of three different consonants. This language feature emphasizes the consonants and their sequence and order. The problem with Sebus is that its first and third consonants, /s/ and /s/, are the same— something that is extremely rare in any Semitic language. That being the case, for a long time I shelved any attempt to etymologize Sebus.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

I am sometimes contacted by people who are expe- riencing doubts about the claims of Mormonism or whose spouse or father or daughter has lost faith. I always ask what the specific issues might be, and I then try to address those or to locate colleagues or printed resources that might help resolve their concerns.

Influence Of The Religious Factor On Modern Society Under The Conditions Of Globalization, Dilafruz Turdiyeva May 2022

Influence Of The Religious Factor On Modern Society Under The Conditions Of Globalization, Dilafruz Turdiyeva

The Light of Islam

World politics is a complex and multifaceted relationship based on national interests, due to the conditions and factors associated with the specifics and customs of a particular state. The role of religion in international relations is not considered as important as economics and politics. But the conflicts and disagreements that arise in the world under the guise of different religions remind the world community how important the religious factor is. This factor knows no boundaries and is not limited to the territory of a particular state. In the 20th century, negative attitudes towards religion changed radically. In the 21st century, …

The Contribution Of The Peoples Of Mawarannahr To The Islamic Sciences And Culture, Shuxrat Yovqochev May 2022

The Contribution Of The Peoples Of Mawarannahr To The Islamic Sciences And Culture, Shuxrat Yovqochev

The Light of Islam

The study of the heritage and works of the great ancestors who lived on the territory of Mawarannahr, who made a significant contribution to the development of Islamic sciences and culture is seen as one of the fundamental points in the self-identification of young independent states in the post-Soviet period. These works not only can help in the education of the younger rising generation but also serve as an excellent factual and practical material for confronting religious radicalism. The purpose of the article is to show how rich is the legacy of the great scientists of Mawarannahr. It can be …

Simple Is As Simple Does: Plantinga And Ghazālī On Divine Simplicity, Jon Mcginnis May 2022

Simple Is As Simple Does: Plantinga And Ghazālī On Divine Simplicity, Jon Mcginnis

Philosophy Faculty Works

This study considers the notion of divine simplicity, the idea that God is not a composite of more basic features, and the criticisms by al-Ghazālī (d. 1111) and Alvin Plantinga of that doctrine. What is shown is that most of the argumentation against divine simplicity frequently credited to Plantinga had been nearly perfectly anticipated by al-Ghazālī. Moreover, in responding to a stronger form of divine simplicity, which Avicenna (d. 1037) had presented, than the Thomistic version that Plantinga attacks, Ghazālī develops ‘new’ arguments and moves that are still valuable and informative to the discussion of divine simplicity today.

Affect And The Tomb In Robert Henryson's Testament Of Cresseid, Elizabeth Elliott May 2022

Affect And The Tomb In Robert Henryson's Testament Of Cresseid, Elizabeth Elliott

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The penultimate verse of Henryson’s Testament of Cresseid suggests the possibility that Troilus raised a monument in memory of his former love, Cresseid: “Sum said he maid ane tomb of merbell gray” (l. 603). Examining the political implications of this uncertain act of memorialisation, this article considers how Henryson's poem mobilises the reader's emotional response to constitute Cresseid as a mourned subject, whose subjectivity is recognised only insofar as it is limited to suffering and death. In doing so, the Testament also establishes a subjectivity for women that offers conditional tolerance predicated on respectable behaviour, contributing to the historical production …

Who Does She Think She Is?, Caroline W. Bynum May 2022

Who Does She Think She Is?, Caroline W. Bynum

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

Abstract: A retired medievalist uses an incident from her early career to urge younger scholars to both self-confidence and realism about their own scholarship. Pointing out that suspicion of bright, high-achieving women has not disappeared, she argues that the greatest weapon for triumphing over it is women’s self-confidence that they set their own standards for excellence.
