Aman Iman: Resilient Customs, Community Water Management, And Dry Futures In Anounizme, Morocco, Haley Kirtland Oct 2022

Aman Iman: Resilient Customs, Community Water Management, And Dry Futures In Anounizme, Morocco, Haley Kirtland

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project explores how Anounizme, a village in southeastern Morocco, interacts with water. I was particularly curious about how traditional community management systems operate in the context of drought. I argue that the customary management system exhibits resiliency like it has in the face of Arabization, colonization, exploitative industry, and land privatization. It is capable of adapting to drought because it is more than a management system; it is a part of culture engrained as custom. Customs have porous boundaries, allowing a space for old aspects of culture to interact with both emerging aspects of culture and external pressures. I …

The Rinpoche Sent Me A Friend Request: The Roles And Perceptions Of Social Media In Buddhist Religious Life, Solveigh Barney Oct 2022

The Rinpoche Sent Me A Friend Request: The Roles And Perceptions Of Social Media In Buddhist Religious Life, Solveigh Barney

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

When I first heard about His Eminence the 8th Chokyong Palga Rinpoche, I didn’t expect to find an Instagram page consisting of gym pics and sunglass selfies. As I kept scrolling through Instagram, I soon found out that Palga Rinpoche is not alone in this influencer-like social media façade; he is a part of a younger generation of Buddhist monastics who are trying to be what some call monkfluencers. These monastics are growing up in the digital world of social media, making it more accessible to share with the outside world the #monklife. My goal is to investigate the relationship …

Teaching Asian Religions Through Film: Response And Reflections, Robin Rinehart Sep 2022

Teaching Asian Religions Through Film: Response And Reflections, Robin Rinehart

Journal of Religion & Film

This article presents reflections on Chien’s, Richey’s, and Mixon’s articles on the benefits of using film as a component of courses about Asian religions. I first explore how incorporating film can help meet the goals that instructors set as part of their course planning, and then shift to analysis of the various pedagogical strategies Chien, Richey, and Mixon employ, highlighting how the techniques that they use for East Asian religions and Islam can be valuable in teaching about other Asian religions as well.

This paper was part of a panel on “Teaching Asian Religions Through Film” presented at the Association …

The Riz Test: Teaching Against Islamophobia Through Film, Candace Mixon

Journal of Religion & Film

This paper offers a concrete tool for teaching against Islamophobia using a film assignment and “the Riz Test.” In four parts, it briefly reviews terminology and literature connected to Islamophobia and Muslimophobia, histories of looking and the power of visual culture, pedagogy and critical viewing habits, the Riz Test, and examples of student engagement and course learning goals met through this assignment. Then, readers can use the concrete tool in their courses and practice critical viewing habits.

Using Film To Teach About Compressed Modernity In East Asian Religions, Jeff Richey Sep 2022

Using Film To Teach About Compressed Modernity In East Asian Religions, Jeff Richey

Journal of Religion & Film

Teaching about East Asian religions all too often presents them as artifacts of the premodern past. This can encourage students to assume that modernization has rendered the East Asian past, especially religious traditions, obsolete. Teaching with contemporary East Asian films is a way to remedy that oversight, challenge that assumption, and bring students into contact with East Asian religious cultures as living traditions in modern societies. Since contemporary East Asian societies have been shaped by what Chang Kyung-sup calls “compressed modernity” – a process by which “economic, political, social and/or cultural changes occur in an extremely condensed manner in respect …

Employing A Chinese Ghost Story To Teach The Syncretism Of Chinese Religions, Gloria I-Ling Chien Sep 2022

Employing A Chinese Ghost Story To Teach The Syncretism Of Chinese Religions, Gloria I-Ling Chien

Journal of Religion & Film

Upon its release in 1987, the Hong Kong blockbuster A Chinese Ghost Story resulted in sequels, adaptations, and two remakes in 2011 and 2020. Despite its popularity, only a few critics have noticed its eclectic representations of Chinese religions, nor has there been any evaluation of its pedagogical potential. This article details how the author employs this 1987 work to teach the syncretism of Chinese religions in an undergraduate course “Asian Religions in Film.” By decoding the embedded concepts, the meanings and history behind “the Jade Garland talisman,” the inclusion of the Diamond Sutra for exorcistic efficacy, and the portrayal …

Introduction – Whither The Spiritual? Rethinking Secularism’S Legacy In Post-Ottoman Art, Hannah Feldman, Kirsten Scheid Sep 2022

Introduction – Whither The Spiritual? Rethinking Secularism’S Legacy In Post-Ottoman Art, Hannah Feldman, Kirsten Scheid

Regards

This dossier seeks to pinpoint hazards emerging on the globally redrawn map of art and culture. It was conceived to expose and navigate the mines laid when the ostensibly methodologically secular discourse of art history turns to art made outside Euro-American cultural centers – art often considered out of sync with Euro-American modernity.¹ As commonly approached, the pinnacle of that modernity corresponds roughly to what one of us has referred to as the “decades of decolonization,” in an effort to avoid reaffirming the Eurocentrism inherent in labeling the period as ‘post-war’...

From Bus Bans On Religious Advertisements To Beyond: Why Religion Is More Appropriately Classified As A Viewpoint Rather Than A Subject Matter, Anna Kukharenok Sep 2022

From Bus Bans On Religious Advertisements To Beyond: Why Religion Is More Appropriately Classified As A Viewpoint Rather Than A Subject Matter, Anna Kukharenok

San Diego Law Review

This circuit split created the issue identified herein: Is a ban on religious advertisements—aimed at all religions equally—permissible because it constitutes a restriction of a subject matter, or is it impermissible because it constitutes restriction of a viewpoint? This narrow issue implies the existence of a broader issue: Should religion as a whole be classified as a subject matter or a viewpoint in order to avoid laborious and fact-intensive inquiries into each particular law? This Comment aims to answer this question through the lens of not only legal precedent, but policy perspectives as well. This Comment advances the position that …

Effects Of Spiritual Intelligence On Person- Organization Fit, Organizational Commitment, And Customer-Oriented Organizational Citizenship Behavior Of Real Estate Agents, Peetikarn Pattanawit, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol Sep 2022

Effects Of Spiritual Intelligence On Person- Organization Fit, Organizational Commitment, And Customer-Oriented Organizational Citizenship Behavior Of Real Estate Agents, Peetikarn Pattanawit, Peerayuth Charoensukmongkol

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This study investigates the effect of spiritual intelligence on person-organization fit (P-O fit), organizational commitment, and customer-oriented organizational citizenship behavior (CO-OCB) among real estate agents. Moreover, P-O fit is proposed as the mediator that explains the effect of spiritual intelligence on organizational commitment and CO-OCB. The survey data was from 398 real estate agents selected from 60 brokerage firms in Thailand. The partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. The results from the model estimation significantly support the positive effect of spiritual intelligence on P-O fit, organizational commitment, and CO-OCB. Moreover, the mediating effect analysis …

Scripture Update: Lehi As A Visionary Man, Matthew Roper Sep 2022

Scripture Update: Lehi As A Visionary Man, Matthew Roper

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

One of the complaints leveled against Lehi by his rebellious sons Laman and Lemuel and his wife, Sariah, was that he was a “visionary man” (1 Nephi 2:11; 5:2). Although this term does not appear in the King James translation of the Bible, it accurately reflects the Hebrew word hazon, meaning divine vision.1 Although this Hebrew term appears in connection with true prophets of God, it is also sometimes written with a negative connotation, describing false prophets, especially in the writings of Lehi’s contemporary Jeremiah (Jeremiah 14:14; 23:16).

Welch Expounds The Sermon On The Mount At Museum Of Art Lecture

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

On January 31, John W. Welch addressed the topic “The Five Faces of the Savior in the Sermon on the Mount” as part of the Museum of Art lecture series on the life of Christ, which has now concluded. Welch, Robert K. Thomas professor of law at BYU, editor in chief of BYU Studies, and the founder of the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, spoke about five specific layers of instruction within the Sermon text in Matthew 5–7. As Welch related, “the Sermon on the Mount is not a scrapbook” of moral maxims, but more importantly it reveals …
