“Jesus | Christ” Or “Jesus—Christ”? Robert Funk Vis-À-Vis Edward Schillebeeckx On The Link Between The Historical “Jesus” And Faith In Him As The “Christ”, Julius-Kei Kato Jan 2023

“Jesus | Christ” Or “Jesus—Christ”? Robert Funk Vis-À-Vis Edward Schillebeeckx On The Link Between The Historical “Jesus” And Faith In Him As The “Christ”, Julius-Kei Kato

Landas

This article examines the validity of the most succinct Christian confession of faith expressed in the name “Jesus Christ” (Hesu-Kristo in Filipino), which affirms that “Jesus,” the teacher-healer from Nazareth, is recognized and trusted as “the Christ,” God’s chosen Messiah. It investigates whether there is a coherent and continuous connection between “Jesus” and “Christ” (rendered as “Jesus—Christ”) or whether significant points of tension and discontinuity remain (expressed as “Jesus | Christ”). The study engages the theology of Edward Schillebeeckx, who argues for a necessary and intrinsic unity between the historical Jesus and the proclaimed Christ of faith. It then compares …

Addressing And Being Addressed By God As Our Eternal You In Martin Buber’S I And Thou, Thomas Sherman Jan 2023

Addressing And Being Addressed By God As Our Eternal You In Martin Buber’S I And Thou, Thomas Sherman

Landas

Martin Buber’s main concern in I and Thou is how we can come to address and be addressed by the living God as our eternal You. According to Buber, we can address and be addressed by God as our eternal You vis-à-vis each other in willing to encounter each other as You, in believing in our own individual reality as standing apart from each other within the context of a religious destiny, and in being open to the grace of our mutual response. In willing to encounter each other as You, we ultimately will to encounter the eternal You; in …

Youth In A Mental Health Crisis, William Simmons Jan 2023

Youth In A Mental Health Crisis, William Simmons

Integrated Studies

Recent research has shown that many of today’s youth are experiencing a mental health crisis that they are not prepared to handle on their own. A large portion of youth have a mental, emotional, or behavioral issue and may not even realize it or are not able to seek help. This problem is further exacerbated by continual budget cuts made to school spending and a justice system that prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation. This research paper will give a brief history of the juvenile justice system and what advances have been the most influential. It will also examine the flaws of …

The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi Jan 2023

The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

When parapsychologists talk about survival, they are usually implying personal survival, that is, a process in which memories, motivations, and personality characteristics of a given person somehow persist after bodily death. Are there other conceptions of survival (and of personal identity) that deserve further scientific examination? My purpose with this brief commentary is to expand on Rock et al’s approach by urging survivalists to discuss and investigate further the many different conceptions of (and explanations for) survival. I propose we critically reflect on our theoretical assumptions and their epistemological and cultural consequences.

Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper Jan 2023

Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

The field of depression research and theory is a preparadigmatic potpourri of different orientations without a central, consensus definition of depression. This study attempted to address these issues by investigating the depression sub-literatures (cognitive–behavioral, psychoanalytic, evolutionary, biomedical, phenomenological, existential–humanistic, cybernetic, environmental, and religious–spiritual theories) using a comparative analytic methodology, which allows for comparing disparate fields that do not share a common definitional set by relating them to a third concept, in this study the construct of “ungrieved futility” (UF) as a dynamic model of depression. UF defines the objective and/or subjective experience of the permanent loss of an attachment object …

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso Jan 2023

The Common Good In The Vision Of John Paul Ii And Francis: From Solidarity To Care For Creation, Martial Tatchim Fotso

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the evolution of the understanding of the common good in Catholic Social Teaching (CST) from John Paul II to Francis. I demonstrate that while the vision of John Paul II on the common good stressed the principle of solidarity for the good of all people and each individual, Francis made a significant change by expanding the concept of common good beyond the human good to an integral ecology. The principles of common good and solidarity are essentially related in the social vision of John Paul II. Solidarity is “a firm and persevering determination to commit oneself …

Holy Heroes! Catholic Comics In Special Collections, Henry M. Handley, Stephanie Shreffler, Jillian M. Ewalt

Roesch Library Faculty Publications

This chapter considers the importance of Catholic comics in special collections and emphasizes their potential as multi-disciplinary research and teaching tools. The legacy of comics as Catholic educational literature, subjects of censorship, and political bellwethers in the United States make these visual texts rich in content for both special collections instruction and student scholarship. This article provides an overview of Catholic comics in special collections at the University of Dayton, a brief survey of the history of Catholic comics in the United States, and illustrates examples of active learning and research in special collections through two case studies. A Mediation Model Linking Attachment To God, Hope, And Mental Health, Shira Wein M.S. Jan 2023

A Mediation Model Linking Attachment To God, Hope, And Mental Health, Shira Wein M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Insecure attachment style to primary caregivers has consistently been linked with greater vulnerability to adverse mental health outcomes (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2007). Insecure attachment style to God is also associated with deleterious mental health outcomes (Bishop, 2008; Knabb & Pelletier, 2014; Rowatt & Kirkpatrick, 2002; Freeze & DiTommaso, 2014; Wei et al., 2012), but little is known about the mechanism that underlies this relationship. This study examines hope as a psychological strength that mediates the associations between attachment to God and depression, anxiety, and life satisfaction. The study was conducted through an anonymous online survey, surveying individuals above the age …

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses And Healthcare Disparities: Understanding The Impact Of Implicit Bias, Marla Lepley-Starr Jan 2023

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses And Healthcare Disparities: Understanding The Impact Of Implicit Bias, Marla Lepley-Starr

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Introduction: Disparities in healthcare have long been a challenge for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members. More recently, population health-focused efforts have been implemented to manage everincreasing rates of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, as well as lack of transportation, limited access to care, and poverty (North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services [NCDHHS], 2019). Racism, sexism, ageism, sizeism, etc., are present in the healthcare setting and manifests in implicit bias during care delivery. This can manifest as beliefs, behaviors/practices, and emotions of the provider (Paradies et al., 2014). Research is limited related to the …
