Creating A Feminist Religious Counterpublic:Rlds Feminists And Women's Ordination Advocacy In America, 1970–1985, David Howlett, Nancy Ross
Creating A Feminist Religious Counterpublic:Rlds Feminists And Women's Ordination Advocacy In America, 1970–1985, David Howlett, Nancy Ross
Religion: Faculty Publications
The 1970s witnessed an efflorescence of religious feminism in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, particularly around the issue of women's ordination. We pose a model for understanding this development—the formation of publics/counterpublics—and explore how it illuminates our case study. Drawing upon oral history interviews and archival sources, we document how RLDS women created independent publications, grassroots consciousness-raising groups, feminist classes and conferences, and Women-Church–inspired worship to reimagine priesthood within their church. We conclude that the lens of a counterpublic offers a capacious view of our topic, one capable of integrating both social movement theory and …

Make All The Laws You Want: The Catholic Left Against Legal Liberalism, Circa 1968, Sara Mayeux
Make All The Laws You Want: The Catholic Left Against Legal Liberalism, Circa 1968, Sara Mayeux
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
In this article, I bring the history of Catholic radicalism into conversation with legal history. Although there is an extensive historical literature on Catholic responses to the Vietnam War and other 1960s upheavals, this historiography has remained siloed from legal scholarship. Legal scholars (particularly outside of Catholic legal circles) have devoted little attention to figures like Merton, Furfey, and participants in the Catholic “ultraresistance” against the Vietnam War. In scholarly accounts of how social movements remade and reacted to constitutional law, Catholic activism is typically discussed, if at all, in the context of contraception and abortion debates. In broad outlines, …

Identity And Rituals Of South Asian Communities In Africa: A Missiological Analysis, Andrew Tompkins
Identity And Rituals Of South Asian Communities In Africa: A Missiological Analysis, Andrew Tompkins
Faculty Publications
There is a sizable Indian population throughout sub-Saharan Africa. A majority of the Indian population are practicing Hindus. For Hindus, ritual is a significant part of their faith tradition, often the most important. In Africa, where they are a minority, Indians often cling to these rituals to maintain their identity as both Indian and Hindu. To share Christ among Indians in Africa, a robust understanding of ritual is required. While many Africans have thought about ritual from their cultural backgrounds, Seventh-day Adventist Africans have yet to do as much reflection on the role of ritual and faith. Adventists in Africa …

Sacred Mountains And Disguising Sutras In Shaka No Honji: Japanese Narratives Of The Life Of The Buddha, Namsai Tantisuk
Sacred Mountains And Disguising Sutras In Shaka No Honji: Japanese Narratives Of The Life Of The Buddha, Namsai Tantisuk
Journal of Letters
This article is a part of the research project Reading Japanese Buddha’s Life Story: Focusing on Shaka no honji. The goal is to analyze Japanese narratives of the life of the Buddha through a case study of Shaka no honji (The Story of Sakyamuni), investigating Japanese beliefs that may be deduced from the narrative. In this article, some unique elements of Shaka no honji were investigated: sacred beings as the Buddha or Prince Siddhartha’s retinue and sacred mountain beliefs. In Shaka no honji (Honji-kei), the Lotus sutra disguised in ascetic form participated in Prince Siddhartha’s retinue. This element underlines …

(Special Section) Sonic Congregating: The Hymn As National British Spectacle, Erin G. Johnson-Williams
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
Hymn singing as an expression of national identity pervades mass sporting events in Britain. From the use of “Abide With Me” at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games (and, annually, at the opening of the Football Association Cup Final and the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final), to recent discussions by the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) around banning “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” in the wake of Black Lives Matter, hymns sung in British sporting events strategically frame quasi-religious notions of class, character, and nation. The tradition of singing hymns at national sporting events in Britain has its …

Our Lady Of La Vang Journeys With The Nation: Marian Devotion And Pilgrimage In Vietnam, Dung Trang Ph.D., Lhc Khiet Tam
Journal of Global Catholicism
The sanctuary of Our Lady of La Vang (OLLV) reveals the role of popular devotion in Vietnamese Catholicism. It manifests the recent strategy from Vietnamese Church leaders to maintain a public presence with an emphasis on reinforcing a sense of Catholic identity through popular devotion and liturgy. Devotion to OLLV then reflects the interaction of several factors: the promotion of the clergy, political influence, and the collaboration of the Vietnamese Catholic laity. Building on existing scholarship that focuses on the cultural inheritance and collective identity of Vietnamese Catholics around the world, this paper explores the case study of the basilica …

The Uncomfortable Subjectsituating Cultural Relativism And Conservative Movements In Indonesia, Ibnu Nadzir
Antropologi Indonesia
sense of rejection toward other groups, whether based on ethnicity, religion, or any other identity markers, has always been a delicate matter for an anthropologist. Departing from the premise of cultural relativism, anthropologists are trained to empathize with their research subjects. However, similar empathy could not easily be exercised to research subjects whose conservative views contradict cultural relativism. The dilemma might explain why research on hate, racist groups, is relatively rare in anthropology or social sciences in general. Even if anthropologists are able to sympathize with the point of view of such groups, the research presentation poses another problem: how …
