The Theology Of The Liturgical Seasons In The Syro-Malabar Church, Ann Mary Madavanakadu Cmc
The Theology Of The Liturgical Seasons In The Syro-Malabar Church, Ann Mary Madavanakadu Cmc
Journal of Global Catholicism
This paper focuses on the theology of the liturgical seasons in the Syro-Malabar Church. The liturgical year with its liturgical cycles and seasons, is more than just a mere structural framework for the prayer life of the Church. It is a true locus of rich theology. The liturgical year is defined as the yearly plan of spiritual life by the Church, for her children, arranged in different seasons or periods to celebrate the mysteries of Christ in life together with feasts, fasts, and abstinence in order to make Christian life a successful pilgrimage to heaven for attaining salvation. This article …
Palliyogam: A Vibrant Legacy Of The Syro-Malabar Archiepiscopal Church, Dery Davis
Palliyogam: A Vibrant Legacy Of The Syro-Malabar Archiepiscopal Church, Dery Davis
Journal of Global Catholicism
This article explores the historic inheritance of the Palliyogam of the sui iuris Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church, focusing on its role in maintaining synodality in ecclesial life. Palliyogam, a parish assembly, has been the cornerstone of ecclesial communion among Malabar Christians for centuries. As Pope Francis inaugurates the three-year synod on synodality, this study examines how Palliyogam aligns with this synodal vision. The article delves into both the ancient form of Palliyogam and its present-day manifestation, shedding light on their theology and role in governance and decision-making within the Syro-Malabar tradition. The article emphasizes that synodality is already inherent …

The Bookworm's Brain: An Analysis On Emotion-Evoking Literature, Savannah Hoffman
The Bookworm's Brain: An Analysis On Emotion-Evoking Literature, Savannah Hoffman
Honors Theses
This thesis draws on several literary studies to create and propose the idea that fiction can cause genuine attachment for audiences as well as produce strong, emotional reactions. This attachment can be achieved through the use of universal literary elements found in writing. Through the use of literary elements, authors are able to convey stories that allow audiences to grow true attachment towards their worlds, characters, and ideas. In addition, the acknowledgement of these elements is helpful in understanding why readers often feel emotional connections to the fictional stories they consume. Being able to understand these elements is important for …

Archaeological Findings Discussed
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a January presentation cosponsored by F.A.R.M.S., explorer Gene Savoy reported some of his latest archaeological findings to a large audience at BYU. Hehasdiscovered43 "lost cities" in the jungle and mountains of South America. His latest discovery, the Gran Vilaya, is said to cover approximately 100 square miles and is found some 400 miles north of Lima, Peru, in virtually unexplored tropical mountains that scholars had thought supported only small villages of agriculturalists.

Women And Family In The Book Of Mormon
Women And Family In The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. is pleased to feature three recent articles that have dealt with women and the family in the Book of Mormon. Al though only six women are mentioned by name in this volume (Sariah, Isabel, Abish, Eve, Sarah, and Mary the Mother of Jesus-and only the first three were figures in the actual Nephite account), many women are known in the book for their courageous and faithful lives, and the message of the Book of Mormon is addressed to all people, "male and female" (2 Nephi 26:33;Mosiah27:25; Alma 11:44;32:23).

Sacred Topographies: The Rhetorical Construction Of Grandfather Mountain As A Sacred Place, Abby Marie Arnold-Patti
Sacred Topographies: The Rhetorical Construction Of Grandfather Mountain As A Sacred Place, Abby Marie Arnold-Patti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study interrogates the ways wilderness spaces become understood as sacred places through rhetoric, using Grandfather Mountain in Western North Carolina as a case study. Using close reading, rhetorical field methods, and social media content analysis, this dissertation examines the rhetorical interpretation, ritualization, contestation, and commodification of wilderness as it comes to be understood and interacted with as sacred. This study offers three significant and interrelated interventions. First, it interrogates how rhetoric works to designate a sacred place. While certain places are understood to be sacred because of their spiritual, historical, or social significance or their natural ecological uniqueness, what …
Christianity And Economic Law, Daniel A. Crane
Christianity And Economic Law, Daniel A. Crane
Book Chapters
From the first century forward, Christian thinkers and authorities have espoused many dierent views of economics, regulation, the role of the state, and economic law. Christian thought on economic regulation underwent systematic scholarly exposition during the Scholastic, Reformation, and modern eras, culminating in a wide array of perspectives on the role of markets and the government’s regulatory role. From Thomas Aquinas on just price theory to Martin Luther on cartelization and predatory pricing and Adam Smith on the nature of the market’s “invisible hand,” Christian and Christian-inuenced thinkers worked out the ethical and moral implications of contracts, usury, exchange, and …

Ritualized Affective Performances: Syriac Etiquette Guides And Systems Intelligence In Early Christian-Muslim Encounters, Luis Josué Salés
Ritualized Affective Performances: Syriac Etiquette Guides And Systems Intelligence In Early Christian-Muslim Encounters, Luis Josué Salés
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
In 2009, Michael Penn published a transcription and English translation of two Syriac texts, To the Rulers of the World (ܠܘܬ ܪ''ܝܫܢܐ ܕܥܠܡܐ) and Concerning the Entrance before a New Emir (ܕܡܥܠܬܐ ܨܝܕ ܐܡܝܪܐ ܚܕܬܐ). This essay proposes a new historiographical approach to these texts based on the concepts and theoretical apparatus of systems intelligence theory and affect theory. I show how these texts use key Islamic theological and cultural ideas that would affectively resonate with the Muslim authorities while remaining non-objectionable to the orthodoxy of the Assyrian Church of the East. Specifically, I argue that Christians sometimes sought to …

Towards A Post-Imperial And Global Ir?: Revisiting Khatami’S Dialogue Among Civilisations, Shabnam Holliday, Edward Wastnidge
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This article argues that Dialogue among Civilisations can be put forward as a crucial contribution to debates addressing IR’s Eurocentrism. It highlights the blurring of West/non-West, domestic/international, and imperial/post-imperial bifurcations. This is evident in three ways. First, Dialogue among Civilisations needs to be appreciated in Iran’s wider historical context and its multifaceted intellectual heritages. This demonstrates that the idea of the West as distinctly different from the East is problematic because of engagement between Iran and the so-called West. Second, Khatami’s intellectual endeavours are based on a simultaneous engagement with Western political thought, Islamic philosophy, and the idea of Ancient …
