Harvest Workers Ministry: Creating Passionate Life-Long Disciples By Nurturing Faith Development And Individual Callings Of Adolescents, Sam Wolowski Apr 2024

Harvest Workers Ministry: Creating Passionate Life-Long Disciples By Nurturing Faith Development And Individual Callings Of Adolescents, Sam Wolowski

Christian Ministries Senior Capstone

“6 out of 10 twentysomethings who were involved in church during their teen years will fail to maintain their active spirituality during their years of adulthood” (Robbins 17). Even the majority of adolescents involved in the church eventually separate from their faith and faith community. David Kinnaman, the president of Barna Group, explains that more than 50 percent of teenagers and young adults who are not committed Christians report that their former faith community (e.g., church, parish, etc.) did not help them understand their purpose and view their gifts and passions as part of God’s calling (159). The separation of …

Evangelship: Mobilizing A Culture Of Discipleship That Leads To Evangelism In A Multiethnic Latino Context, Lawrence D. Perez

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Discipleship and evangelism in America today are eroding. Where traditionally the church sees discipleship and evangelism as separate entities, this research project argues for the unification of the two. This project explores “Evangelship,” the uniting of evangelism and discipleship, to see if the combined approach and perspective could offer a better way to engage the North American population. The driving question for this project is “Can the integration of evangelism and discipleship create a culture that accelerates and advances the Great Commission at U-Turn Covenant Church (U-Turn)?” To answer this question, the study aims to establish a discipleship framework that …

Covid-19 Web Archives: Evolving Catholic And Marian Devotional Practices, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty

The COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on the work of academic librarians and archivists. Stay-at-home orders meant that librarians often had to set aside in-progress tasks and identify new remote projects. For archivists who primarily work with physical items, the pandemic also meant reassessing how to provide services to patrons, steward the collections, and continue to acquire new material that falls within the collecting scope. The Archivists at the University of Dayton used some of their time at home to start web archive collections that recorded how the pandemic affected Catholic life in the United States and the world. …

Faithful In Friendship: Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Self-Perception As Portrayed By His Relationship With Eberhard Bethge, Greer Bates

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Shortly before Christmas 1943, Dietrich Bonhoeffer sat at the desk in his cell at Berlin's Tegel Prison to pen letters to the loved ones he left behind when the Gestapo arrested him on charges of conspiracy against the Fuhrer. Bonhoeffer recently passed the eight-month mark since his arrest, and he had given up hope of being released to his family in time for the holiday. "There's probably nothing for it but to write you a Christmas letter now to meet all eventualities," he opened a note to his parents, explaining that he had accepted the fate of not spending Christmas …

The Crucifixion And Death Of Jesus In The Qur'an And Islamic Scholarship: The "Swoon Theory" And The Medical Perspective, Emmanuel K. Asante

Masters Theses

The crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ is a profound event that holds immense theological significance within Christianity. However, the Islamic perspective as presented in the Qur'an, offers a distinct portrayal of this event, giving rise to an argument known as the Swoon Theory. This theory suggests that Jesus did not die on the cross but instead survived the crucifixion, prompting various interpretations and implications. This thesis aims to explore the depiction of the crucifixion and death of Jesus in the Qur'an, focusing specifically on the swoon theory and its relationship with the medical perspective. By examining relevant Qur'anic verses …

Psychology Of Altruism: A Phenomenological Study Of Christian Leaders, Joshua G. Belk Mar 2024

Psychology Of Altruism: A Phenomenological Study Of Christian Leaders, Joshua G. Belk

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Altruism is fundamentally a part of Christianity, but this phenomenon has never been researched from the perspective of Christian leaders. More than simple kindness or generosity, altruism can be defined as actions and behaviors which place a person’s own interests subordinate to another’s. This qualitative study interviews 31 Christian leaders to establish an understanding of what altruism is in the context of Christian faith. The study found that Christian leaders’ experiences with altruism redefines what was previously known about the phenomenon and its role in our lives. Examining the Christian rationale of altruism provides a richer conception of altruism and …

Preparing The Next Generation For Faith Ownership By Training Fathers In The Biblical Worldview, John D. Embrey Mar 2024

Preparing The Next Generation For Faith Ownership By Training Fathers In The Biblical Worldview, John D. Embrey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Several modern factors increase families’ difficulty training children in the Christian faith. Time commitments outside the home have increased, and a decline in faith practice has made parents less comfortable and confident with knowledge of the Christian faith. These factors fueled an increase in teenagers leaving the Christian faith as they moved into adulthood and a decline in the number of adults with a biblical worldview. The underlying assumption of this DMIN project is that if fathers are trained with a biblical worldview and mentoring skills, they will become more comfortable and prepared to share their faith with their children …

How American Christians Practice Yoga, Allyson Huval Mar 2024

How American Christians Practice Yoga, Allyson Huval

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

RECENTLY, religious studies scholars and Christian practitioners alike have joined in discussions about the effect of Christian yoga on one’s spiritual life. The following article analyzes findings from an online survey based on Christian yoga practitioners' behaviors. The findings affirm that Christians who practice yoga see mystical experiences as a part of their practice but separate this from elements of bhakti yoga. This phenomenon is predicated on practitioners' unfamiliarity with and resistance to engaging with the historical origins of yoga beyond its physical practices, instead shaping their yoga practice to fit their prior faith commitments.

Translation Policy And Practice In The Konkani Catechism Of Diogo Ribeiro, S.J. (1561-1635), Pär Eliasson

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

IN virtue of important works in the fields of lexicography, grammar, and translation, Diogo Ribeiro S.J. (1561-1635) is a key figure in Indian missionary linguistics as well as in the development of Christian Konkani. He also plays a pivotal role in the reception history of the more well-known Thomas Stephens. In the preface of his Konkani translation of Roberto Bellarmino’s Dichiarazione più copiosa della dottrina Cristiana , Ribeiro describes his translation policy and argues for controversial choices where he follows the practice of Thomas Stephens. The present article analyzes Ribeiro’s translation policy and shows how he puts it into practice …

The Theoretical Epigenetic Relationship Between Complex-Ptsd And Adhd In Holocaust Survivors’ Descendants, Y. Sahara Brodsky Mar 2024

The Theoretical Epigenetic Relationship Between Complex-Ptsd And Adhd In Holocaust Survivors’ Descendants, Y. Sahara Brodsky

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When comparing ADHD and Complex-PTSD, these two disorders share many overlapping features in both areas of the brain that are affected and the behavioral aspects due to deficits in certain brain regions, such as the prefrontal cortex. It is due to this similarity that I predict that c-PTSD is the precursor to the development of ADHD in later generations. Through epigenetic changes that are consistent with c-PTSD diagnosis, these changes to the brain are then passed down the generational line. When this is combined with trauma transference and generational trauma, it creates a situation where both the behaviors inform how …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Apertures in recollections studies the interview process used with Holocaust survivors as a method of assisting them in filling the gaps in their memories. Holocaust survivors were subjected to life altering experiences that have caused holes in the memories they share with us. In this thesis I go over the efficacy of multiple session interviewing to enhance a trauma survivors’ memory of events. The methodology of Dori Laub and Henry Greenspan is used to enhance the way I witnessed a personal experience while transcribing Helen Kahan’s interview for The Florida Holocaust Museum’s Dimensions in Testimony exhibit. Using these perspectives I …

Honors Seminar: "Religion And The Sermon In Appalachia", Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

This presentation is kind of a sequel/follow-up to one I gave seven years ago in Baltimore, entitled “Four Case Studies in Teaching Sermons at a Public University.” I discussed

a gen-ed ENG class, a gen-ed class cross-listed with ENG & RST, a graduate seminar, and a class in the Honors College. The first three were one-offs, but the Honors class has lived on. I taught it again, in much the same form, the semester after that presentation, and again this past semester. The title was now “Religion and the Sermon in Appalachia” (for purposes of the online schedule, it had …

Anthropology On Social Media, Danielle Airola M.A. Mar 2024

Anthropology On Social Media, Danielle Airola M.A.

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In 2018, only about half of Americans (49%) agreed that “human beings, as we know them today, developed from earlier species of animals,” and 38% that “the universe began with a big explosion” (Besley and Hill, 2020). These basic facts may be well understood by the scientific and academic communities, but how do we go about disseminating this sort of knowledge to the general public? What about more nuanced and detailed information that may affect people’s understanding of our human heritage or health? Social media has great potential for increasing the reach and broadening the understanding of individuals. However, it …

Sunrise In The Heartland: The Ahmadiyya Movement And African American Islamic Revival, Hazel F. Videon Mar 2024

Sunrise In The Heartland: The Ahmadiyya Movement And African American Islamic Revival, Hazel F. Videon

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

During the 1920s, an immigrant missionary from colonial India named Muhammad Sadiq established headquarters in Chicago and Detroit for a branch of Islam called the Ahmadiyya movement. During the interwar period, the Ahmadiyya movement became the first institutional expression of Islam in North America. It was especially influential in attracting African American converts through anti-racist messages and its connection to Black Nationalist, Pan-Islamist, and Pan-Africanist groups and ideologies. This project argues that the Ahmadiyya movement developed a “conversion rhetoric” aimed at African Americans that emphasized Islam as a connection to ancestral practice and a means toward liberation. Later African American …
