Educating Students After Acquiring A Traumatic Brain Injury: A Meta-Synthesis, Caroline Noel Apr 2012

Educating Students After Acquiring A Traumatic Brain Injury: A Meta-Synthesis, Caroline Noel

Special Education Masters Program Theses

Since the addition of traumatic brain injury, as a specific category, to the Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1990, schools around the United States have become more aware of this complex, unique disability. More students are now being serviced correctly by special education teachers and support personnel, in the educational setting. As more students are entering the education system, under the disability category of traumatic brain injury, and receiving the correct individualized services for their disability, the more students are graduating from high school and going on to be successful in a college education. These individuals are able to have …

Workplace Discrimination And The Perception Of Disability, William Draper Apr 2012

Workplace Discrimination And The Perception Of Disability, William Draper

Theses and Dissertations

Decisions by the EEOC in favor of claimants perceived to have disabilities disproportionately exceeded those in favor of claimants with documented disabilities. This finding lends support to the assertion that unconscious/implicit bias is persistent in the workplace.

Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie Apr 2012

Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie

Research Papers

Heroin addiction is devastating to both the person addicted and to society. Attempts to treat heroin addiction have proved difficult due to the extreme addictive qualities of the drug. Medication-assisted recovery or pharmacotherapy, such as methadone and buprenorphine, are controversial in that it is providing a medication that has similar qualities of heroin itself. Behavioral treatments alone have limited success due to many factors. The literature presented will provide a look at heroin and heroin addiction, as well as a comprehensive study of outpatient treatments that are currently being used. The purpose of this study is to determine the most …

Assessing The Effects Of Stress Resilience Training On Visual Discrimination Skills: Implications For Perceptual Resilience In U.S. Warfighters, Andrea Taylor Apr 2012

Assessing The Effects Of Stress Resilience Training On Visual Discrimination Skills: Implications For Perceptual Resilience In U.S. Warfighters, Andrea Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Current military operational environments are highly improvised and constantly evolving, threatening the lives of U.S. warfighters. For instance, since 2001, 60% of all hostile casualties and 65% of hostile injuries in the Middle East theater have been attributed to improvised explosive devices (IEDs). IEDs are powerful physical weapons, and the stressful atmosphere they, and other operational challenges create, can also result in a range of psychological dysfunctions, including anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Not only are these issues concerning for mental health reasons, they are also problematic in terms of combat performance. Extreme arousal (i.e., stress) …

Special Education's Role In Health Education, Christina Kostadinova Apr 2012

Special Education's Role In Health Education, Christina Kostadinova

Education Masters

Adolescents with disabilities deserve to be taught about sex/health education issues in order to escape the unfortunate statistics awaiting them in the future if this education continues to be dismissed or simply ignored. Negative issues such as sexual abuse, substance abuse, and limited knowledge about STD’s, HIV/AIDS and safe sex can be avoided with sufficient education on these topics. Fifteen teachers at two special education high schools in Rochester N.Y were asked about current knowledge levels of their students in regards to sex/health education topics and about the programs/curricula that are implemented at their schools. The results indicate that the …

Overview Of Rural Health, Vincent Francisco, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute Apr 2012

Overview Of Rural Health, Vincent Francisco, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Ultimately, the challenge of health care reform is the challenge of building community (Shortell et al., 1996). It makes little sense to discuss health without also discussing environment. Environments may be toxic physical environments due to pollution, noise and crime, or toxic social environments that promote health risk behavior like smoking and sedentary living. Alternatively, environments may be constructed to promote health behavior (e.g., physical activity) or reduce health risks (e.g., indoor smoking policy). In either case, the population’s health status is shaped by their environment. Rural people are less healthy than urban people (Institute of Medicine, 2005). Rural environments …

Counselor Beliefs And Perceived Knowledge Regarding Clients With Learning Disabilities, Tamekia R. Bell

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

Clients with learning disabilities constitute a cultural group that has not been extensively studied. The professional literature has found that counselors have reported the need for additional training in working with clients with disabilities. This study explored counselors' beliefs and perceived knowledge regarding counseling clients with learning disabilities. Participants in this study were college counselors, mental health counselors, and school counselors who were members of the following professional counseling associations: the American College Counseling Association (ACCA), the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMCHA), and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). These counselors were assessed to determine their perceived competency regarding …

Institutional Variables, Collegial Relationships, And Occupational Satisfaction: Testing The Conceptual Framework Of Faculty Job Satisfaction Among Counselor Educators, Rebecca E. Michel Apr 2012

Institutional Variables, Collegial Relationships, And Occupational Satisfaction: Testing The Conceptual Framework Of Faculty Job Satisfaction Among Counselor Educators, Rebecca E. Michel

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

Occupational satisfaction is the extent to which individuals are fulfilled by their employment. The Conceptual Framework of Faculty Job Satisfaction (Hagedorn, 2000) describes how aspects of work impact occupational satisfaction, yet researchers have not previously used this model with counselor educators. This study investigated the applicability of the model, as well as the impact of institutional and interpersonal variables, on a sample of 296 counselor educators (26.86% response rate). Findings suggested the model predicted over half of the variance in occupational satisfaction. Significant predictors of satisfaction included work itself, responsibility, recognition, salary, collegial relationships, administration, and climate. Counselor educator occupational …

Perceived Health In Lung Cancer Patients: The Role Of Positive And Negative Affect, Jameson K. Hirsch, Andrea R. Floyd, Paul R. Duberstein Mar 2012

Perceived Health In Lung Cancer Patients: The Role Of Positive And Negative Affect, Jameson K. Hirsch, Andrea R. Floyd, Paul R. Duberstein

ETSU Faculty Works

Purpose: To examine the association of affective experience and health-related quality of life in lung cancer patients, we hypothesized that negative affect would be positively, and positive affect would be negatively, associated with perceived health.

Methods: A sample of 133 English-speaking lung cancer patients (33% female; mean age = 63.68 years old, SD = 9.37) completed a battery of self-report surveys.

Results: Results of our secondary analysis indicate that trait negative affect was significantly associated with poor physical and social functioning, greater role limitations due to emotional problems, greater bodily pain, and poor general health. Positive affect was significantly associated …

Evaluation Of A Web-Based Peer Discussion Group For Counselor Trainees, Christine J. Yeh, Tai Chang, Dorota Kowalewska-Spelliscy, Chris Drost, Devika Srivastava, Lillian Chiang Jan 2012

Evaluation Of A Web-Based Peer Discussion Group For Counselor Trainees, Christine J. Yeh, Tai Chang, Dorota Kowalewska-Spelliscy, Chris Drost, Devika Srivastava, Lillian Chiang

School of Education Faculty Research

The present study examined the development, content, and outcome of a two-semester Web-Based Peer Discussion Group (WBPDG) for 20 counselor trainees. Outcome measures determined that participants felt significantly more open and comfortable using the WBPDG at posttest in comparison to pretest. In addition, counselor trainees significantly reported a preference for using aliases online versus their real names in order to foster more sharing. Grounded theory[1] was used to analyze the 824 WBPDG messages revealing the following themes: Therapeutic Technique, Case Conceptualization, Professional Identity and Development, Supervision, Interpersonal Issues, and Ethics. Participation in the WBPDG also correlated with outcomes measured in …
