Effects Of Science Of Reading Pedagogy On Student Self-Efficacy In The Elementary Intervention Classroom, Emily Marie Robinette
Effects Of Science Of Reading Pedagogy On Student Self-Efficacy In The Elementary Intervention Classroom, Emily Marie Robinette
Theses and Dissertations
This action research study investigated the effects Science of Reading pedagogy and curriculum have on students’ reading self-efficacy within the setting of the elementary intervention classroom. The theoretical framework, Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, guided the study’s research questions, review of literature, methodology, and data analysis. The conceptual framework of the Science of Reading theory and educational movement served as the primary source of design and implementation of the intervention. Students participated in pre-, mid-, and post intervention interviews which measured students’ perceptions about their reading self-efficacy throughout the intervention period. They also participated in weekly reading self-efficacy questionnaires, which provided …

Impact Of Simulation On Project Management Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Student Perceptions: An Action Research Study With Non-Traditional Undergraduate Students In A Project Management Capstone Course, Deborah Marindin
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effectiveness of a project management simulation in enhancing non-traditional undergraduate students' project management knowledge, self-efficacy, and perceptions in a project management capstone course. The simulation tool, SimulTrain®, provided an authentic, real-world context to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Utilizing mixed-methods action research, the study comprehensively evaluated the simulation’s impact on students’ learning. The research was guided by three questions: (1) How does a simulation activity affect non-traditional students’ project management knowledge in a capstone course? (2) To what extent does the simulation impact their self-efficacy? (3) What are students’ perceptions of learning …
Exploring Professional Development Of Expatriate Teachers In Kuwait Through Mentoring, Taji Abdul-Raheem
Exploring Professional Development Of Expatriate Teachers In Kuwait Through Mentoring, Taji Abdul-Raheem
Theses and Dissertations
Professional growth as a teacher is fundamental for teacher retention and an overall determinant of favorable student outcomes. Academic research underscores professional development as an indicator of success for a school’s success as well. Expatriate teachers in Kuwait, who comprise a significant portion of the workforce, come from various backgrounds and levels of readiness for teaching in a contextually and culturally unfamiliar setting. Due to how teachers are hired and approved for teaching without induction, an implementation for continuous professional development has yet to be materialized for teachers in the private sector. This qualitative study leverages Improvement Science to diagnose …
Hearing All The Colors: Stories Of Engagement From Teachers' Perspectives, Carolyn Allison
Hearing All The Colors: Stories Of Engagement From Teachers' Perspectives, Carolyn Allison
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study documented four high school English II End of Course teachers' stories about student engagement in the classroom. Students of color, in particular, have been maligned for underperformance on state-mandated tests. Instead of focusing on the despairing headlines and data, this study focused on how teachers follow the state standards and district curriculum guides to increase success. The teachers' authentic voices on student engagement shine through their stories. Student engagement is not a one-size-fits-all scenario which these teachers prove.
The teachers' stories served as the data for this study. The data was viewed through the lens of …
Apathy Or Agency: Exploring Civic Engagement With Ap Psychology Students, Regina Dilley
Apathy Or Agency: Exploring Civic Engagement With Ap Psychology Students, Regina Dilley
Theses and Dissertations
Sensing my high school students’ apathy toward civic engagement, I used a community of inquiry framework to address this problem of practice. Through mixed-methods action research, I explored participants’ perspectives on community, civic engagement, and their involvement in both spheres. A community of inquiry framework was the foundation for my research questions, and as I collected data, I launched an intervention based upon my findings. Although the results of this study were not statistically significant and are not generalizable, I collected a wealth of survey, interview, and reflection data from 48 students across two classes. Analysis grounded in my observations …
A Neuro-Symbolic Ai Approach To Scene Understanding In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Tharanga Wickramarachchige Don
A Neuro-Symbolic Ai Approach To Scene Understanding In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Tharanga Wickramarachchige Don
Theses and Dissertations
Effectively understanding scenes requires a unified representation of scene data and background knowledge. A neuro-symbolic AI approach to scene understanding leverages such a unified representation to enable advanced expression, inference, and labeling of scenes, improving the perception of autonomous systems.
Scene understanding remains a central challenge in the machine perception of autonomous systems. It requires the integration of multiple sources of information, background knowledge, and heterogeneous sensor data to perceive, interpret, and reason about both physical and semantic aspects of dynamic environments. Current approaches to scene understanding primarily rely on computer vision and deep learning models that operate directly on …

Power And Resistance: Black Americans' Multifaceted Perceptions Of Ingroup Strengths And Their Effects On Collective Efficacy And Resistance, Hu Young Jeong, Johanna Vollhardt, Michelle S. Twali
Psychology
The current research examines perceived ingroup strengths and their relationship with collective efficacy, generalized power, and resistance among Black Americans. Two studies investigated how different perceptions of ingroup strengths (e.g. collective resilience, ingroup solidarity, intergroup coalitions, ingroup resistance, and intergroup respect) were associated with generalized power perceptions, perceived collective efficacy, and resistance behaviours. Study 1 demonstrated that collective resilience, ingroup solidarity, and intergroup coalitions predicted increased collective efficacy, which in turn predicted organized resistance but not everyday resistance. Perceived control over resources and influence predicted generalized power but not resistance behaviours. Study 2 extended these findings by including perceived ingroup …

New Light On The Holy City, Douglas L. Winiarski
New Light On The Holy City, Douglas L. Winiarski
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
"The Holy City is one of the iconic images of the “New Era” of “Mother’s work" —come to be called—that began in 1837 and lasted into the 1850s. Nearly three feet tall and two feet wide, the large gift drawing depicts a city divided between a rectangular inner precinct and four, half-moon-shaped suburbs. The inspired Shaker visionist who drew The Holy City began by outlining the plan in graphite, using a compass and straight edge, then tracing the lines in black ink. A double line filled with a dark cyan watercolor wash creates the square inner walls of the city; …

Family Medicine, East Africa
Family physicians (FPs), as educators, capacity builders and clinical governance leaders of primary care (PC) teams, work to make them more effective and responsive to the needs of their patients. Various strategies are required to raise the profile of Family Medicine (FM) to ensure stronger representation in health sector planning and policy development for advocacy on behalf of the communities they serve. An illustration is given of the need for FP leaders to become equal partners in the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Planning process to ensure safer surgery at district hospitals and to address unmet surgical needs. Integrating FM …

Balancing Infrastructure Demands: Analysis Of Materials Pricing And Supply, Bethany Paris, Ying Li, Steve Waddle, Bryan Gibson
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) lets around 700 contracts year valued at over $1 billion. One of KYTC’s foremost goals is to deliver projects on time and on budget. However, over the past five years achieving these twin goals has grown in difficulty due to material shortages, widespread inflation, supply chain disruptions, and the tight labor market triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although material shortages have abated and supply chain disruptions have eased, instability is seemingly a permanent feature of the national and global economies. As such, Cabinet decision makers need reliable tools that can be used to understand historical …

We investigated associations between preconception and prenatal heat stress and wildfire (WF) smoke exposures on adverse birth outcomes and whether neighborhood climate vulnerability is an effect modifier in the Maternal And Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social stressors cohort (N = 713). Generalized linear models were fit to test the association between exposures and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), low birthweight (LBW), and Fenton growth z-score outcomes, adjusting for confounders. Living in a high climate vulnerability index neighborhood was tested as an effect modifier. During preconception, increases in heat stress and WF measures were associated with higher odds of SGA. Living in the …
