Bullying remains a widespread social issue in the United States (US). Those who bully, are bullied, or witness bullying may experience negative emotional and physical consequences.1 To address the gap in accessible youth bullying interventions, Children's Mercy Kansas City partnered with Sporting Kansas City to develop Red Card KC, a bullying awareness program focusing on the impact of bystanders in bullying situations. The program is delivered to school and community partners through interactive assemblies educating youth on recognizing bullying, managing bullying situations, and standing up against bullying. Red Card KC has also partnered with schools to recognize and celebrate students …

One in six youth has a neurodevelopmental disability (NDD), and autism diagnostic rates continue to rise. Before and after a diagnosis, families need trusted sources of guidance to navigate co-occurring medical and psychological conditions, and to manage unique stressors including transition to adulthood. However, medical professionals from all specialty areas struggle to identify resources to support the complex psychosocial and healthcare needs of these patients and their families. This primer on psychosocial supports for youth with autism will explore the major mental and physical health stressors faced by affected youth and families, and discuss opportunities for primary care and other …

Easy access to streaming news and sensational headlines has transformed society's exposure to traumatic narratives. From personal stories on social media platforms to news articles about violence in communities, patients and their caregivers may not recognize their exposure as traumatic nor recognize their psychological sequalae as unhealthy. In addition, youth with trauma-related mental health symptoms are not consistently identified in pediatric primary care clinics. Due to the increase in proximity to traumatic stories, healthcare providers working with youth require additional skills designed to engage patients and families in conversations about exposure to violence via technology and symptoms of vicarious trauma. …

With the rapid and ever-evolving growth of both digital media platforms and mental health concerns in youth, parents and practitioners are faced with the challenge of critically evaluating the effects of digital media use on youth development.1 Despite popular culture's narrow focus on the risks, research has established both positive and negative effects of youth digital media use.2,3 In contrast to interventions primarily focused on screen time limits, the goal of this article is to propose a framework for healthy digital habits rooted in a social-ecological model, called the Multisystemic Model of Digital Habits. This framework considers the intersection of …

This letter, signed by over 50 academic chairs of emergency medicine, urges the ACGME to reconsider a proposed mandate requiring all emergency medicine residency programs to adopt a four-year training model. The authors argue that current three-year programs are supported by data demonstrating equivalent educational and clinical outcomes compared to four-year formats. They criticize the flawed survey methodology underpinning the proposal, note the loss of milestone-based training flexibility, and highlight the lack of added scholarly or clinical value in the fourth year. The letter also outlines negative consequences for fellowship participation, workforce development, trainee debt, and diversity. The signatories advocate …

IMPORTANCE: Recent studies have identified characteristic symptom patterns of long COVID (LC) in adults and children older than 5 years. However, LC remains poorly characterized in early childhood. This knowledge gap limits efforts to identify, care for, and prevent LC in this vulnerable population.
OBJECTIVES: To identify symptoms that had the greatest difference in frequency comparing children with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection to those without, to identify differences in the types of symptoms by age group (infants/toddlers [0-2 years] vs preschool-aged children [3-5 years]), and to derive an index that can be used in research studies to identify young …

Background
Papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC) is the second most common kidney cancer subtype, yet our understanding of its tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) remains limited.
Objective
We utilized multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) and spatial transcriptomics (ST) to evaluate immune cell architecture in pRCC contrasted with clear cell RCC (ccRCC).
Methods
Localized RCC tumors (16 pRCC, 70 ccRCC) underwent mIF using markers for T cells, B cells, and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). Spatial data in both tumor and stromal compartments of the TIME were collected. A post hoc recurrence free survival analysis (RFS) was performed using Cox proportional hazard models. Single-cell ST was …

High-dose methotrexate dosage and infusion durations differ across treatment protocols for pediatric leukemia, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma. Supportive care interventions are dependent on a patient's elimination of methotrexate (MTX). Therefore, it is important to establish the expected MTX elimination across protocols. Using modeling and simulation of real-world data, we determined the expected MTX concentrations at common time points from the start of infusion (24, 36, 42, 48, 60, and 72 hours) and the time that each patient would reach a typical discharge threshold (0.4, 0.2, 0.15, and 0.10 µM). These data provide a reference for MTX concentrations for common pediatric protocols.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) typically exhibit lower cardiorespiratory fitness and reduced moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) compared to persons without disability. Approximately 50-55 % of individuals with DS have congenital heart disease (CHD), which is associated with cardiopulmonary deficiencies and reduced MVPA participation in non-DS populations. It is unknown if CHD related comorbidities compound with DS associated deficits in physical activity and fitness.
OBJECTIVE: To compare physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, and cardiovascular function, of persons with DS with and without CHD.
METHODS: Baseline data were used from a 12-month randomized controlled physical activity intervention of adults with DS. Participants …

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) caused by sports-related incidents in children and youth often leads to prolonged cognitive impairments but remains difficult to diagnose. In order to identify clinically relevant imaging and behavioral biomarkers associated concussion, a closed-head mTBI was induced in adolescent pigs. Twelve (n = 4 male and n = 8 female), 16-week old Yucatan pigs were tested; n = 6 received mTBI and n = 6 received a sham procedure. T1-weighted imaging was used to assess volumetric alterations in different regions of the brain and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine microstructural damage in white matter. The …

Human trophoblast stem (TS) cells are informative in vitro models for the generation and testing of biologically meaningful hypotheses. The goal of this project was to derive patient-specific TS cell lines from clinically available chorionic villus biopsies. Cell outgrowths were captured from human chorionic villus tissue specimens cultured in modified human TS cell medium. Cell colonies emerged early during the culture and cell lines were established and passaged for several generations. Karyotypes of the newly established chorionic villus-derived trophoblast stem (TSCV) cell lines were determined and compared to initial genetic diagnoses from freshly isolated chorionic villi. Phenotypes of …

Positive patient experience is associated with improved patient outcomes, but efforts to improve patient experience are often underprioritized, especially with respect to pediatric care. To address this challenge, leaders at several US children's hospitals established the Pediatric Experience Collaborative (PEC) in 2016 to leverage their collaboration and scale to optimize patient, family, and provider experiences. Since then, the PEC has steadfastly incorporated the patient and family perspective in all its endeavors (e.g., installing a family member as one of the organization's co-chairs); has created both structured opportunities and unstructured opportunities for learning and connection; and has embarked on multi-institutional research …

Experimentally Driven Numerical Model Of Carbon/Polyaniline-Based Glucose Monitoring Sensors: An Evaluation Using A New Figure Of Merit, Ziad Khalifa
Chemical Engineering
This study presents an experimentally driven numerical model for evaluating carbon/polyaniline (PANI)- based glucose monitoring sensors (GMSs), focusing on innovative configurations using graphene-PANI and carbon nanotube (CNT)-PANI composites. We performed a thorough analysis of the morphological, electrophysical, and electrical properties of these materials, ultimately leading to the extraction of key electrical parameters for integration into a finite element model (FEM). This model simulates the entire sensor, enabling the estimation of critical performance metrics such as sensitivity, limit of detection (LOD), linearity, and power consumption. Our findings demonstrate that the CNT-PANI configuration significantly outperforms the laser-induced graphene (LIG)-PANI electrode, achieving a …

Economic Consequences Of Public Pension Accounting Regulation Changes: Evidence From Housing Markets And Local Economies, Grace Haoqing Fan
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
I examine whether, and through which channels, government pension accounting regulations affect local housing markets and economies. Using both a contiguous border-county approach across multiple states and a single-state study in California, I find that regions exposed to more severe state-level pension underfunding experience lower housing market growth after the introduction of Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) regulations 67 and 68, which significantly enhance the transparency of public pension underfunding. The effect is more pronounced in states heavily impacted by the new regulations and in counties more reliant on state funding. Further analyses suggest that the observed effect is driven …

The Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) light trap is widely used for malaria vector surveillance, but its acquisition logistics pose challenges in Africa. Evaluating new traps can improve surveillance tools. This study compared the efficiency of the BG-Pro UV and Silver Bullet 2.1 UV (SB 2.1 UV) against the UV LED CDC trap in western Kenya’s rice irrigation area. The traps were tested indoors in eight houses over 64 nights. Light properties and fan speed were analyzed using spectrometry and an anemometer. The BG-Pro UV trap performed better than the UV LED CDC trap for An. gambiae s.l. (RR 2.0, …

The study aims to test the existence of the N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) and to determine the impact of fossil energy consumption and economic activity such as industrialization, urbanization, and trade openness on CO2 emissions in Indonesia from 1971 to 2021, using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL). The results of this study show that the relationship between per capita GDP and CO2 emissions in Indonesia has a reversed N-shape. Industrialization and per-capita consumption of fossil energy have a positive impact, while trade openness has a negative impact on CO2 per-capita emissions both in the short and long term. Meanwhile, urbanization …

Pengaruh Vaksinasi Covid-19 Terhadap Kesehatan Dan Kondisi Ekonomi Masyarakat Di Indonesia, Ayu Lestari, Fauziah Zen
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The COVID-19 vaccination is considered crucial for controlling the pandemic and accelerating economic recovery. However, empirical evidence on the impact of vaccination on health and the economy at the district/city level in Indonesia remains limited. This study aims to analyze the impact of vaccination on health outcomes and economic conditions. The methodology used is a fixed effect model with monthly panel data on vaccination and health outcomes (positivity rate and recovery), as well as annual data on per capita expenditure in 514 districts/cities from January 2021 to December 2022. The results show that the first dose of vaccination significantly reduces …

Given the growing ubiquity of AI and the consequent valorization of data in territorial representation, it becomes crucial to analyze how multimodal algorithms interpret spatial narratives and community dynamics. This research studies the effects of algorithmic automation on social mappings. Using "Balboa Observa" project, a collaborative web mapping initiative that documents Observatorio Music Festival in Spain, the study explores the interaction between collective cartography, ethnographic analysis, and AIdriven data processing. Unlike conventional AI practices, the prioritizes analyses that avoid imposing structured categories on everyday narratives, allowing inclusion of sensitive information for deeper festival impact understanding. Through multimodal algorithms like CLIP …

The Wizarding World is cloaked in mystery, a secret society of dragons, spells, and broomsticks. Living beyond the ordinary in the back alleys and behind the veil, what are the economic impacts of having one of the few wizarding schools, and how does that compare to the economic impact of the traditional American college? Unlike traditional American Colleges, Wizarding schools do not need to pay for electricity or offer WIFI; however, they still need to purchase food, books, and supplies. The recent increase in liberal arts colleges and universities closing in the United States has significantly impacted the economy. Nortre …
