Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Recent studies have highlighted the importance of mitochondria in NP cells and articular chondrocyte health. Since the understanding of mechanisms governing mitochondrial dynamics in these tissues is lacking, we investigated the role of OPA1, a mitochondrial fusion protein, in their homeostasis. OPA1 knockdown in NP cells altered mitochondrial size and cristae shape and increased the oxygen consumption rate. OPA1 governed the morphology of multiple organelles, including peroxisomes, early endosomes and cis-Golgi and loss resulted in the dysregulation of autophagy. Metabolic profiling and

The Relationship Between The Light And Dark Triads Of Personality, Covid-19 Threat, And Covid-19 Vaccine Status In College Students, Alyssa M. Howard, Terry F. Pettijohn Ii

Psychology

The rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States was due, or at least in part, to the resistance to health guidelines, minimal to no safety measures implemented by nearly half the U.S. citizens, and, to a lesser extent, the initial lack of understanding into the pathogenic mode of transmission. The present study examined links between the Dark (i.e.., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) and Light (i.e.., compassion, empathy, altruism) Triad of personality traits, the perceived threat level of COVID-19, and COVID-19 vaccine uptake in an undergraduate college sample (N = 147). The study found no statistically significant differences in …

Exploring Subfield Interest Development In Undergraduate Physics Students Through Social Cognitive Career Theory, Dina Zohrabi Alaee, Benjamin M. Zwickl

Physics and Engineering Science

This study investigates how undergraduate physics majors develop an interest in specific subfields. We examine interest formation through the lens of social cognitive career theory (SCCT) using four SCCT constructs: learning experiences, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and proximal environmental influences. We conducted 27 interviews with physics majors across multiple years of study between 2020 and 2022. Our first research question used SCCT constructs to provide detailed insights into factors affecting interest formation in various subfields of physics. We identified many factors that positively impacted students’ interests, such as positive learning experiences (e.g., coursework, experimental projects, extracurricular clubs, and self-directed learning), high …

From Photogrammetry To Virtual Reality: A Framework For Assessing Visual Fidelity In Structural Inspections, Xiangxiong Kong, Terry F. Pettijohn, Hovhannes Torikyan

Psychology

Civil structures carry significant service loads over long times but are prone to deterioration due to various natural impacts. Traditionally, these structures are inspected in situ by qualified engineers, a method that is high-cost, risky, time-consuming, and prone to error. Recently, researchers have explored innovative practices by using virtual reality (VR) technologies as inspection platforms. Despite such efforts, a critical question remains: can VR models accurately reflect real-world structural conditions? This study presents a comprehensive framework for assessing the visual fidelity of VR models for structural inspection. To make it viable, we first introduce a novel workflow that integrates UAV-based …

Default Is No Option: The Unconstitutionality Of The Debt Limit Law, Fred A. Slone Jul 2025

Default Is No Option: The Unconstitutionality Of The Debt Limit Law, Fred A. Slone

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This article demonstrates conclusively the unconstitutionality of a widely feared default on the public debt due to the debt limit.

First, we find that Article I of the Constitution granted Congress no power, express or implied, to provide for a default by the United States. Under the principles of constitutional law established by the Supreme Court in Marbury v. Madison (1803), any law outside the powers of Congress is void. Thus, the unconstitutionality of a default may be readily established pursuant to Article I, with additional support from the Tenth Amendment.

Furthermore, we find that the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments …

How Social Movements Catalyze Firm Innovation, Kate Odziemkowska, Yiying Zhu Jul 2025

How Social Movements Catalyze Firm Innovation, Kate Odziemkowska, Yiying Zhu

Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We investigate the impact that social movements have on firm innovation through private politics. We argue that firms strategically respond to private politics by investing in new technologies that address movement-advocated issues material to firms’ performance. Although both contentious private politics—when activists contentiously target firms—and cooperative private politics—when activists and firms collaborate—catalyze innovation, they do so in different ways. Contentious private politics increases the amount of innovation that firms undertake by drawing managerial attention to movement-advocated issues material to the firm, prompting search for solutions to those issues. Conversely, cooperative private politics provides firms access to new knowledge that encourages …

PURPOSE: Oncology pharmacists (OPs) play a crucial role in cancer care, treatment, survivorship, and multidisciplinary teams (MDTs). OPs have specialized training in designing, administering, monitoring, and modifying oncology chemotherapy; managing adverse events; and evaluating clinical trials and investigational drugs. Yet, the state of OP has remained largely unknown in the clinical oncology workforce of the West African region. Therefore, this study aimed to understand who reconstitutes chemotherapy and to explain the OP educational and practice needs, challenges, and solutions in Nigeria.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a concurrent embedded mixed method design, 35 OPs completed a questionnaire, and 12 others responded …

News-Driven Peer Co-Movement In Crypto Markets, Gustavo Schwenkler, H. Zheng Jul 2025

News-Driven Peer Co-Movement In Crypto Markets, Gustavo Schwenkler, H. Zheng

Finance

This paper develops a novel methodology to identify peer linkages among cryptocurrencies using natural language processing applied to financial news. We document a distinct pattern of conditional co-movement among peer assets: when a cryptocurrency experiences a large idiosyncratic shock, its peers — identified through news co-mentions — exhibit abnormal returns of the opposite sign. This mis-pricing persists for several weeks and enables profitable trading strategies. Our findings suggest that investor overreaction to news drives these dynamics, highlighting the role of financial media in shaping prices. The proposed methodology extends beyond crypto, offering a generalizable approach to studying peer effects and …

A Phenomenological Study On The Enabling Role Of Digital Competencies In Heutagogical Learning Contexts, Jennifer Dean Jul 2025

A Phenomenological Study On The Enabling Role Of Digital Competencies In Heutagogical Learning Contexts, Jennifer Dean

Masters

This study examines how digital competencies contribute to independent learning within heutagogical contexts in higher education.   The research was conducted to address assumptions that digital competence directly enables learner autonomy, despite limited understanding of this empirical relationship in practice.   A qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed, using nine semi-structured interviews to explore learners’ lived experiences in digitally mediated environments.   The findings indicate that self-directed learning is primarily driven by intrinsic motivation and often occurs unconsciously.   Digital competencies were found to act as enabling factors by facilitating access, flexibility and engagement, however, their influence on autonomy was context-dependent rather than deterministic. …

Skirmishing Toward A General Theory Of Evidence And Proof, Kevin M. Clermont Jul 2025

Skirmishing Toward A General Theory Of Evidence And Proof, Kevin M. Clermont

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Traditional probability fundamentally assumes bivalence and additivity: there is only truth and falsity, whose odds add to one. The consequence is many problems and paradoxes for factfinding, all attributable to the assumptions’ exclusive focus on random uncertainty. By contrast, multivalent belief theory abjures those two assumptions, thereby allowing consideration of epistemic uncertainty. This theory divides the factfinder’s state of mind into three, not two, gradated concepts: belief, uncommitted belief representing epistemic unknowns, and disbelief. This theory utilises a more general but perfectly valid logic that accounts for all relevant kinds of uncertainty and so explains the law’s wise practices. In …

Is Current “Repeat Player” Theory Much Ado Over Much Less—An Evidence-Based Overhaul, Edward P. Mcdermott Jul 2025

Is Current “Repeat Player” Theory Much Ado Over Much Less—An Evidence-Based Overhaul, Edward P. Mcdermott

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This empirical study suggests that the existence and impact of the “repeat player effect” (“effect”) may be exaggerated. Legal and conflict resolution theorists suggest that the existence of repeat players is a process flaw. They opine that first time players (“one-shotters”) are at a disadvantage to repeat players. Stulberg extended this process flaw theory to mediation.

Arbitration: An Unstoppable Wave?, Matthew Boston Jul 2025

Arbitration: An Unstoppable Wave?, Matthew Boston

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In recent years, large companies have started favoring the use of compelled arbitration agreements. Arbitration is one of many mechanisms encompassed under alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”), a broad framework by which parties may seek alternatives to litigation. As a whole, ADR arose with the intent of avoiding the high costs of litigation. Arbitration became the “principal form of ADR” for a period of time, with cost savings in mind.

Cooperative Creativity: The Adr Foundations Of Modern Dance Copyright, Audrey O'Brien Jul 2025

Cooperative Creativity: The Adr Foundations Of Modern Dance Copyright, Audrey O'Brien

Journal of Dispute Resolution

In the mid-twentieth century, the landscape of copyright was quickly changing, facing new technologies as well as cultural changes that would ultimately test the limits of the 1909 Copyright Act. Choreographic copyright protection changed immensely throughout the last half of the twentieth century, and one ballet company at the forefront of the changing tides of copyright law was the New York City Ballet (“NYCB”), led by choreographer George Balanchine. By the time Balanchine passed, the legacy of both his company, NYCB, and his body of copyrighted work was immense enough to determinatively color the way choreographic copyrights are handled under …

Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, a questionnaire identified the most and least used strategies, followed by interviews with 10 participants for deeper insights. Findings show cadets frequently use bilingual dictionaries, vocabulary lists, and group work, while cognitive strategies like written repetition and note-taking are underutilized. No significant differences in VLS use were found between Level 1 and Level 2 cadets, suggesting stable strategy preferences. Additionally, emerging strategies such as gamified learning and collaborative storytelling indicate a shift …

The Lived Experience Of Religious Trauma Among Transgender And Gender Diverse People: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Patrick T. Meyer Jul 2025

The Lived Experience Of Religious Trauma Among Transgender And Gender Diverse People: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Patrick T. Meyer

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Religion has served as a framework to support the psychological well-being of people across cultures throughout human history, yet there is growing scholarly and public interest in how religious institutions and people inflict harm on members through spiritual means. Extant literature demonstrated that transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people experience gendered microaggressions in religious spaces, and their social position within the church likely holds unique insights into the subjective experience of religious trauma. Even though research with people who have had adverse religious experiences has increased over time, little is known about TGD people who experience lasting psychological damage due …

Development And Implementation Of A Vector-Quantized Transformer Autoencoder For Monitoring Bicycle Road Conditions, Kewei Ren Jul 2025

Development And Implementation Of A Vector-Quantized Transformer Autoencoder For Monitoring Bicycle Road Conditions, Kewei Ren

Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Adviser: Chun-Hsing Ho

The long-term, sustainable assessment of bicycle road conditions is essential for ensuring cyclist safety and promoting equitable infrastructure management. While traditional detection methods based on manual thresholds have demonstrated some effectiveness, they carry limitations due to the diversity of pavement materials, cyclist behaviors, and sensor platforms. Although recent advances in deep learning offer promising alternatives, established techniques are primarily applied to highway anomaly detection and are rarely adapted for bicycle roads. Furthermore, most related studies lack clear definitions for anomalies and transparent annotation procedures, resulting in a shortage of effective datasets and detection methods specifically for bicycle …

Extracting From The Extracurriculum: Using Extracurricular Composition Practices To Bring Purpose, Voice, And Engagement Back To The English Classroom, Grace N. Ellis

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis explores how principles and practices from extracurricular literacy spaces and the extracurriculum as a whole can inform and revitalize the secondary English classroom. In response to growing student disengagement, apathy, and disconnection, particularly within highly standardized and product-focused classrooms, this argument investigates how programs such as the Nebraska Writers Collective’s All Writes Reserved program and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Young Writer Camp model authentic engagement, identity exploration and development, and rhetorical agency through creative, student-centered writing practices. Drawing from composition theory, educational research, and experiential data from Nebraska-based writing initiatives, the thesis argues that incorporating choice, safe-risk taking, …

The Effect Of Individual Variation On Epidemiological Dynamics: From Super-Spreaders To Landscapes Of Risk, Alexis Shannon Beagle Jul 2025

The Effect Of Individual Variation On Epidemiological Dynamics: From Super-Spreaders To Landscapes Of Risk, Alexis Shannon Beagle

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Individuals that make up a population always display some level of variation between members. At the smallest scale, individuals always maintain genetic variation, but variation continues to arise at other scales of biological organization from physiological or immunological variation within individuals to variation in behavior between individuals that can be both genetically and environmentally mediated. The role of individual variation is particularly important in the context of infectious diseases because there is strong evidence that infections are highly heterogenous, indicating that patterns of individual variation drive a significant portion of the epidemiological patterns we observe. Individual variation leads to heterogeneity …

Use Of High-Throughput Phenomics With And Without Fungicide As A Wheat Breeding Tool, Gerardo Ivan Rivera Collazo Jul 2025

Use Of High-Throughput Phenomics With And Without Fungicide As A Wheat Breeding Tool, Gerardo Ivan Rivera Collazo

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is an important food staple for many countries around the world and current consumption and production data demonstrate a production deficit. Breeders are challenged to help close this gap in production by selecting better cultivars with improved yields. Several methods aim to accelerate the breeding process to reduce the time required for releasing an elite variety. One of the main breeding bottlenecks is the lack of fast and reliable phenotypic data acquisition that could dissect physiological and morphological plant data. High-throughput remote sensing could have the potential to reduce this bottleneck by streamlining data acquisition, …
