Systemic, Cultural, And Institutional Barriers Significantly Limit Black Girls' Access To Mental Health Care In The United States, And Reform Is Needed To Create Equitable Support Systems, Macie Anderson
Distinguished Student Scholarship Collection
This paper explores how systemic, cultural, and institutional barriers prevent Black girls in the United States from accessing equitable mental health care. Drawing from peer-reviewed research and government reports, it highlights the roles of racism, stereotypes, underrepresentation in mental health professions, and school-based discipline disparities. The argument pushes for reforms in access, education, and culturally responsive care, advocating for justice-centered mental health systems that affirm and support Black girls holistically. This work seeks to challenge stigmas, expose inequities, and ignite change by centering the lived experiences of an often-overlooked population. [Abstract provided by the author.]

One Hundred Years Of Morales Y Benet V. La Junta Local De Inscripciones: The Use Of The Insular Cases To Deny Women’S Voting Rights In Puerto Rico, Joel Andrews Cosme-Morales
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
The centenary of
Morales y Benet provides an opportunity to reflect on the inequalities women faced under Puerto Rican colonialism in the early 20th century, shaped by the legal imperialism of the United States over the archipelago. This article explores the holding in Morales y Benet v. La Junta Local de Inscripciones and its impact on women’s lives during the last 100 years.
The decision in
Morales y Benet came at a time when women in the mainland United States had already secured the right to vote, following decades of suffrage activism that culminated in the passage of the Nineteenth …

What's The Matter With Lozada: How The Board Of Immigration Appeals Coerces Immigration Lawyers To Breach Legal Ethics, Kari E. Hong
Articles
In general, if an attorney makes a mistake, they can cure it by notifying the forum and filing the appropriate remedy. Immigration law, by contrast, stands alone by requiring the client (or a new attorney) to corroborate any mistake by filing a bar complaint against the first attorney. This requirement was established in a 1988 case, called Matter of Lozada. Much has been written on how the Lozada rule is unnecessary (a mistake does not need to be corroborated by a bar complaint and state bars are complaining about a deluge of unnecessary complaints for negligence) and harms the immigration …
Immigration Federalism In The Second Trump Administration, Stella Burch Elias
Immigration Federalism In The Second Trump Administration, Stella Burch Elias
Articles
This Article explores the ongoing transformation of state and local engagement in immigration-related rulemaking in the United States during the Second Trump Administration. The Article examines the myriad ways in which federal executive actions and state responses to those actions, alongside independent state actions and the federal government’s responses to those actions, are upending longestablished immigration law doctrines and shifting the borders of American federalism. The Article discusses legal scholars’ previous understanding of immigration federalism, embodied in United States v. Arizona, and the prior distinctions between permissible “alienage” laws and impermissible “immigration” laws, which could not be introduced by state …

Economic Evaluation Of Caregiver Interventions For Children With Developmental Disabilities: A Scoping Review, Angela Kairu, Edwin Dzoro, Vibian Angweny, Charles Newton, Charlotte Hanlon, Rosa Hoekstra, Amina Abubakar, Edwine Barasa
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
Globally, families with children with developmental disabilities (DDs) experience challenges, including social isolation, stigma, and poverty, especially in low-income settings in Africa. Most children with DDs in Africa remain unidentified and receive no formal support. Caregiver interventions focusing on education and training for the carers/parents have been shown to be adaptable and low intensity in implementation, although the economic evidence is limited. This review aimed to describe the evidence and methodological aspects of economic evaluations for caregiver interventions for DDs. The Arksey and O’Malley framework was applied. Seven electronic databases, grey literature and cited references were systematically searched to identify …
Enhancing Graph Representation Learning Through Self-Supervision: An Augmentation Perspective, Jianyuan Bo
Enhancing Graph Representation Learning Through Self-Supervision: An Augmentation Perspective, Jianyuan Bo
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Graph representation learning has become fundamental in various domains, from social networks to molecular structures, enabling extraction of meaningful patterns from graph-structured data. While deep learning approaches, particularly graph neural networks, have shown promising results, their effectiveness is often limited by the scarcity of labeled data. This challenge is particularly acute in graph domains where annotation requires specialized expertise and is prohibitively expensive. Self-supervised learning has emerged as a promising direction to address this limitation by creating auxiliary tasks from unlabeled data, with augmentation strategies playing a crucial role in their success.
Current graph self-supervised learning methods face several critical …

Analyzing Google Maps As A Data Source For Urban Research In Dhaka, Xinyi Du
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This paper investigates how mass transit infrastructure shapes urban economic activity by examining the impact of Dhaka's first metro line using novel Google Maps data. Leveraging the opening of Metro Line 6 on December 2022, we employ a difference-in-differences framework to analyze changes in business establishment density around metro stations. Our estimates show that every 1% reduction in distance to the nearest metro station adds, on average, about 0.092–0.111 establishments per 40 m × 40 m grid cell—that is, roughly 57 – 69 additional businesses per square kilometer. The effect is even more pronounced for dining: about 1 – 4 …

Modification Of Epic System’S Simple Visit Coding (Svc) Evaluation Rule To Reduce Medical Claim Denials, Edith Ballard
Translational Projects (Open Access)
Background: The recruitment, development, and retention of skilled medical coding staff has become increasingly challenging for healthcare providers. To alleviate staffing burdens, Epic Systems’ electronic health record (EHR) introduced the Simple Visit Coding (SVC) work queue, designed to evaluate hospital patient encounters and automatically assign International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis codes. However, the current SVC work queue evaluation rule at a prominent academic Oncology Care Organization (OCO) in the South does not utilize autonomous, generative, or computer-assisted coding (CAC) technologies. The work queue evaluation rule uses a simple rule-based program logic that relies on …

Autism Care Continuum: Exploring Specialty Services Across The Lifespan Within U.S. Academic Medical Centers, Alexis Khuu
Theses and Dissertations
Autistic people—particularly adults—experience high rates of co-occurring mental health problems and often report unmet service needs. Although several barriers to accessing quality care are well-documented, the broader landscape of autism-specific services across the lifespan remains under-researched. This two-part thesis aimed to address this gap by examining the availability of autism-specific services, as well as patterns in service utilization and associated costs, among autistic children and adults. The first study employed a systematic web-scraping protocol and data extraction procedure to identify and characterize autism specialty services offered by U.S. academic medical centers. This work revealed a general lack of autism specialty …

An Analysis Of Missing And Murdered Women, Girls, And Two-Spirit Individuals (Mmiwg2) In The United States, Olivia Michelson, Kaitlyn Vilgos, Omi Hodwitz, Steff King
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
In the United States, there is a pattern of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals experiencing high rates of victimization. Although Indigenous persons have a higher rate of violence, there is little to no coverage or attention given to these victims. This leads to cases being overlooked by law enforcement and policymakers, which leaves gaps in the data that prevent efforts that could help affected communities. The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Two-Spirit (MMIWG2) database aims to address this gap in awareness by identifying MMIWG2 cases through public documents and records. The project goal is to code each case …

More Than An "Anxious" Generation: How Value Systems Anchor The Human Experience, Sailor Nelson
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Experience is the key to everyone’s emotional development, rather than knowledge and information gathering (Haidt, 2024). This study, conducted under Dr. April Masarik’s Human Universals Project in the Human Development and Ecology Lab, explores shared human values and life philosophies across generations – challenging the idea that moral differences are solely generational. Using Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham’s Moral Foundations Theory and Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis, I’m analyzing student autobiographical narratives from a PSYC 419 course (n = 94) to identify how value systems develop and function. In previous literature reviews and analyses, nine core themes emerged. A …

Benchmarking Uncertainty Quantification For Deep Learning, Dristanta Silwal, Kyle Lucke, Min Xian
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
One of the most significant developments in the last decade has been the heights Artificial Intelligence (AI) has reached in our daily lives. However, many advanced AI models have proved to be over-confident in their predictions, which makes it a challenge to apply them to critical applications such as healthcare, finance, and nuclear power and creates pressing needs for quantitatively understanding the uncertainties of AI predictions. In this project, I benchmark uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods for state-of-the art deep learning-based image classification models. The UQ methods focus on identifying misclassification in natural image datasets. I benchamark state-of-the-art UQ methods: Deep …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
A 28-GHz multibeam joint communication and sensing system called SideSense is presented, in which a line-of-sight (LoS) beam is used to maintain reliable communication, while other sensing beams are used to enhance physiological motion detection. SideSense decodes the motion frequency and shape from the channel state information (CSI) by first tuning the gain ratio and phase differences between the LoS communication beam and non-LoS (NLoS) beam to maximize the sensing signal-to-noise ratio (SSNR) without significantly degrading the communication channel capacity (CCC). Analytical results based on a bistatic model are presented to show a gain ratio of around 1 and a …

Estimating How Much Children Work: Questionnaires Versus Time Use Diaries, Juana Lamote De Grignon Pérez, Wenbin Wang, Tanay Kasyap, Matthew Henglong Luo, Jialu Tang
Discussion Papers
Current estimates of child labour often rely on questions such as, “How many hours did you work last week?” While biases in adult self-reports are well-documented in high-income countries, there is limited evidence on the accuracy of children’s responses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Using data from nine LMICs, including China and India, this paper shows that time diaries report more than twice as many work hours as standard questionnaires. This discrepancy suggests that current estimates may significantly understate child labour. Moreover, certain forms of work—such as collecting water or firewood—appear to contribute to these measurement gaps.

Understanding Rural Schools’ Capacity To Learn About Evidence-Based Practices That Promote Youth Mental Health: A Comparative Case Study, Savannah Hobbs, Elaine S. Belansky, Nick Cutforth, Cynthia Hazel
The Rural Educator
Amid growing student mental health concerns, numerous evidence-based practices (EBPs) exist to promote student mental health, but most rural schools do not have these practices in place. Little is known about the organizational capacity of rural schools to learn about and select youth mental health EBPs, or the role research intermediaries can play to support these processes. In this study, 11 middle school staff from three rural school districts participated in surveys and semi-structured interviews to provide information on how schools learn about and select mental health EBPs, related barriers and facilitators, and the role of intermediary support. A semi-structured …

Understanding Grade 10 Learners’ Mathematics Learning Experiences In Rural Schools: Applying The Self-Determination Theory, Hlamulo Wiseman Mbhiza, Thabisile Nkambule
The Rural Educator
The increasing performative expectation in mathematics continuously positions rural learners in a deficit manner within the education system in post-apartheid South Africa. The often-cited low academic performance of rural learners in mathematics fosters the belief that something is wrong with their mathematical learning abilities. The problem with narrow and often decontextualized perspectives of rural learners is that their interactions with mathematical content are frequently overlooked in education research. The purpose of this study was to critically explore grade 10 rural learners’ mathematics learning experiences. We employed a qualitative descriptive approach within a case study design, using semi-structured individual interviews supported …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 37. What About Wallace On Vaccination . . . ?, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Best known for his natural history studies on evolution and biogeography, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) had a significant second career as a social critic. One of his most controversial stances was his position on (smallpox) vaccination. Anti-vaxxers of the present frequently bring up his name as a resource for their side, but the situation is not so easily reducible to that.
