Critical Reviews Of Advertising
Critical Reviews Of Advertising
Communication Research Trends
In the late 1950s and early 1960s a series of very influential thinkers began a strong movement of criticism of advertising. This questioning of advertising led to a deeper questioning of the 'cult of consumerism' which advertising propagates.
Vance Packard in his popular book, The Hidden Persuaders (1956) attacked advertising for using the techniques of depth psychology to raise 'subliminal anxieties' and manipulate desires for alcohol, cigarettes and other consumer items. John Kenneth Galbraith, in The Affluent Society (1958) pointed out that advertising was encouraging a wasteful consumerism which allowed a small portion of the world's people to use up …

Perceptions Of A Crewed Mission To Mars: Appraising General Public And Industry Support, Christian Yeara Herrero
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
A human-crewed mission to Mars represents a bold undertaking unlike any in our species history. It will test the limits of human capability, technological innovation, and scientific exploration. Even with cutting-edge technology, a highly trained crew, and robust support systems, this mission carries significant risks. Additionally, it will demand a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar investment, making public backing essential, especially as taxpayer resources are diverted from other national priorities. Gaining widespread support for such an ambitious effort is critical for policymakers, mission planners, academia, and industry leaders. Understanding whether the public endorses this investment—and to what extent—is vital for shaping strategies, building …

Pilots’ Readiness To Fly - Alcohol Detection Assisted By Ai Facial Recognition Technology, Chibok Lee, Andy Jung, Yanbing Chen
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) “Bottle to Throttle” rule prohibits pilots from consuming alcohol within 8 hours of a flight and mandates a blood alcohol content (BAC) below 0.04%. However, pilots may still experience impairments beyond this timeframe. Current alcohol testing methods, including random screenings and confirmation tests, are limited in scope and timeliness, leaving potential gaps in aviation safety. This study aims to develop an AI facial recognition technique using Human-Centered Computing (HCC) to evaluate pilots’ readiness to fly by identifying subtle alcohol-related impairments, regardless of BAC levels. The project involves three steps: 1) training an AI model on …

The Carpet Bag Correspondence, Russell J. Desimone, Erik J. Chaput
Dorr Scholarship
In late December 1842 and early 1843 there appeared several newspaper articles in the Providence Journal under the caption of “The Carpet Bag” Correspondence. In all four letters were published in the local newspapers all claiming to be from the carpet bag. Two of the letters were written by Dutee J. Pearce of Newport to Thomas Dorr the leader of the suffrage movement in Rhode Island. The other two letters were written to Dorr by Dr. J.A. Brown and Louis Lapham. The second Pearce letter is interesting because it discusses giving the Black community a jury trial.

Corrosion Behavior Of Mgtizn And Mg4tizn Alloys After Ball Milling And Subsequent Spark Plasma Sintering, Alexander Helmer, Rahul Agrawal, Manoj Mugale, Tushar Borkar, Rajeev Gupta
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Magnesium-containing multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) are promising for lightweight applications due to their low density, high specific strength, and biocompatibility. This study examines two Mg-Ti-Zn alloy compositions, equal molar MgTiZn (TZ) and Mg4TiZn (4TZ), synthesized via ball milling followed by spark plasma sintering, focusing on their microstructures and corrosion behaviors. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealed the formation of intermetallic phases, including Ti2Zn and Mg21Zn25 in TZ, while 4TZ exhibited a predominantly Mg-rich phase. Potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests in 0.1 M NaCl solution showed that both alloys had good corrosion resistance, with values of 3.65 +/- 0.65 mu …

Cannabis And Covid: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis Of Their Impact On Mental Health-Related Hospital Visits In Rural Arizona (2016-2023), Jennifer Megan Suter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Arizona’s rural communities face shortages in mental health care services. In 2020, the nearly simultaneous onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the legalization of recreational cannabis introduced overlapping public health stressors that may have disproportionately affected these vulnerable populations. However, their combined impact on rural mental health remains understudied. This three-manuscript dissertation employed interrupted time series analyses to assess how these events influenced monthly hospital visits for schizophrenia, psychosis, cannabis-induced psychosis, and suicidal behaviors among rural Arizona adults aged 21 and older. A total of 16,468 records from the Arizona State Inpatient and Emergency Department Databases (SID and SEDD) met …

Community Perspectives On Engaging Stakeholders For Human-Sumatran Tiger Coexistence In The Bukit Barisan Selatan Landscape, Rinekso Soekmadi, Novriyanti Novriyanti, Burhanuddin Masy’Ud, Damayanti Buchori, Christine Wulandari, Ismanto Ismanto
Forest and Society
The Bukit Barisan Selatan (BBS) landscape, a vital habitat for the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), is increasingly degraded and fragmented by plantation and agricultural expansion, driving tigers into human-dominated areas and creating conflict zones beyond conservation boundaries. However, despite global frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal 2050 Biodiversity Framework and IUCN advocating coexistence by integrating ecological and socio-economic priorities, the practical implementation at the site level remains uncertain, particularly regarding local perspectives on coexistence and their alignment with competing stakeholder interests. This study analyzes the alignment of parties in the context of the potential coexistence of human-tiger conflicts in …

Background
Summer vacation is a time when youth gain excessive weight. A key driver of unhealthy weight gain is poor dietary quality. The absence of consistent structure (e.g., school), is hypothesized to be one of the reasons for lower diet quality during summer. This study examined differences in school and summer dietary quality among a diverse cohort of children across three years. We also examined the impact of attending structured programs on children’s diets.
Methods
Parents of 1,032 children (age 5–14 years, 48% girls) completed a time use diary each day for 14-days during school (April/May) and again in summer …

Health Services and Informatics Research
Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to improve healthcare and public health. Although there has been success in AI for research uses, little progress has been made in implementing health-related AI technologies in health systems. Responsible AI for health systems requires engagement and co-design with health system partners, policymakers, and the community. Deploying responsible AI requires engaging stakeholders, particularly those affected by the technology. This commentary presents the importance of participatory approaches for responsible AI implementation. In this commentary, we discuss the planned use of participatory approaches to responsibly deploying validated machine learning models, with a specific case example …
