Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco Jul 2025

Rutger Bregman's Centralized Utopia, Vladimir Snurenco

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A short, provocative review of Rutger Bregman’s Moral Ambition. I sketch his technocratic utopia—“Rutger-land”—a colder, centralized world where fossil fuels are banned, richer people are taxed into moral compliance, UBI prevails, and the landscape is “tobacco-free, malaria-free, poverty-free, and meat-free… just fields of kale and solar panels.” I argue Bregman’s approach is resolutely top-down—activism, lobbying, and policy over enterprise, churches, and grassroots civic life—misunderstanding how wealth is created and how real change happens. Against this centralized moralism, I make the case for decentralization, subsidiarity, and the quiet, dignified work of civil society.

Navigating Your Boundaries: Transitioning From Egs To Pure4egs Without Altering Your Job Description, Jessea Young

Librarian Publications & Presentations

Loyola Marymount University’s William H. Hannon Library recently transitioned from Expert Gallery Suite (EGS) - Selected Works to Pure4EGS. Previously, EGS was managed by authors with support from the scholarly communications librarian when they deposited works into our institutional repository, Digital Commons @ LMU & LLS. EGS was a secondary, but underutilized component, of our scholarly communication services. However, the migration to Pure4EGS gave the library an opportunity to be part of the reporting workflow of research activities and publication data for administrators, faculty, and staff across campus.

Our Pure4EGS platform, Scholars @ LMU, is managed by a single librarian …

Differential Roles Of Cyclin–Cdk1 Complexes In Cell Migration And Invasion, Joseph H.R. Hetmanski, Michael J. Jones, Matthew Hartshorn, Patrick T. Caswell, Matthew C. Jones Jul 2025

Differential Roles Of Cyclin–Cdk1 Complexes In Cell Migration And Invasion, Joseph H.R. Hetmanski, Michael J. Jones, Matthew Hartshorn, Patrick T. Caswell, Matthew C. Jones

Peninsula Medical School

We have previously described a central role for CDK1 at the nexus of adhesion signalling and cell cycle progression, demonstrating that CDK1 has a non-canonical role in regulating integrin adhesion complexes and in the migration of cancer cells in 3D interstitial matrix. Here, we show that the CDK1-binding partners cyclinB1 and cyclinA2 also have roles in cell migration and invasion in both cancer and non-transformed cells. CyclinB1 plays a key role in RhoA activation to promote rear retraction in a membrane tension-dependent manner, whereas cyclinA2 has a general role in promoting motility. Knockdown of either cyclin significantly perturbs migration with …

Generalising information from ourselves to others, and others to ourselves allows for both a dependable source of navigation and adaptability in interpersonal exchange. Disturbances to social development in sensitive periods can cause enduring and distressing damage to lasting healthy relationships. However, identifying the mechanisms of healthy exchange has been difficult. We introduce a theory of self-other generalisation tested with data from a three-phase social value orientation task - the Intentions Game. We involved humans with (

Macroscopic Roughness Modeling Of Satellite Multi-Layer Insulation Reflectance, Kevin P. Donnelly Jul 2025

Macroscopic Roughness Modeling Of Satellite Multi-Layer Insulation Reflectance, Kevin P. Donnelly

Theses

Reflectance modeling of specular surfaces with irregular geometries remains difficult to solve for an array of applications. In the growing space industry, there are many spacecraft materials with high specularity and varying levels of roughness. Modeling these materials in simulations becomes difficult as any realistic amount of roughness is added, necessitating more accurate physical models to represent how light is interacting with these surfaces. While some work has been done to attempt to characterize the spectral signatures of the materials themselves using hyperspectral imaging systems, the scope of these efforts has been fairly limited and not representative of the conditions …

Manual For Independence: How Democratic-Republicans Used The Memory Of The Revolution To Start The War Of 1812, Chloe Pellegrin Jul 2025

Manual For Independence: How Democratic-Republicans Used The Memory Of The Revolution To Start The War Of 1812, Chloe Pellegrin

LSU Master's Theses

In its earliest form, the memory of the American Revolution was far from pure, riddled with partisan jabs and purposeful currents of present events. This, however, has received little attention even with the rise of memory studies within professional history. Scholars have addressed the popular memory of a variety of other pivotal moments from the Civil War to both World Wars. Revolutionary memory has been studied within the contexts of later eras, but almost never in the era immediately following the end of the war. Other scholars such as Alfred Young, Margot Minardy, and Michael McDonnell have all done work …

Spatial Proximity Of Immune Cell Pairs To Cancer Cells In The Tumor Microenvironment As Biomarkers For Patient Stratification, Jian-Rong Li, Xingxin Pan, Yupei Lin, Yanding Zhao, Yanhong Liu, Yong Li, Christopher I Amos, Chao Cheng

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background/objectives: The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a critical role in cancer progression by shaping immune responses and influencing patient outcomes. We hypothesized that the relative proximity of specific immune cell pairs to cancer cells within the TME could help predict their pro- or anti-tumor functions and reflect clinically relevant immune dynamics.

Methods: We analyzed imaging mass cytometry (IMC) data from lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cohorts. For each immune cell pair, we calculated a relative distance (RD) score, which quantifies the spatial difference in proximity to cancer cells. We assessed the prognostic and predictive significance of these …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Immune dysfunction and late mortality from multiorgan failure are hallmarks of severe sepsis. Arginine, a semi-essential amino acid important for protein synthesis, immune response, and circulatory regulation, is deficient in sepsis. However, arginine supplementation in sepsis remains controversial due to the potential to upregulate inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-mediated excessive nitric oxide (NO) generation in macrophages, leading to vasodilation and hemodynamic catastrophe. Citrulline supplementation has been considered an alternative to replenishing arginine via de novo synthesis, orchestrated by argininosuccinate synthase 1 (ASS1) and argininosuccinate lyase (ASL). However, the functional relevance of the ASS1-ASL pathway in macrophages after endotoxin stimulation is …

Eloq: Resources For Enhancing Llm Detection Of Out-Of-Scope Questions, Zhiyuan Peng, Jinming Nian, Alexandre Evfimievski, Yi Fang

Computer Science and Engineering

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has become integral to large language models (LLMs), particularly for conversational AI systems where user questions may reference knowledge beyond the LLMs' training cutoff. However, many natural user questions lack well-defined answers, either due to limited domain knowledge or because the retrieval system returns documents that are relevant in appearance but uninformative in content. In such cases, LLMs often produce hallucinated answers without flagging them. While recent work has largely focused on questions with false premises, we study out-of-scope questions, where the retrieved document appears semantically similar to the question but lacks the necessary information to answer …

Medetomidine, a veterinary α2-adrenergic agonist, has recently emerged as an adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply, yet human exposure has remained poorly characterized. We conducted a pragmatic retrospective cohort analysis utilizing chart review and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) toxicology testing on available urine samples from patients presenting to two hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, who fit two clinical phenotypes, intoxication or withdrawal. Samples also underwent glucuronidase pre-treatment to assess impact on the yield of medetomidine and xylazine metabolite detection. Testing identified universal exposure to medetomidine (58/58 samples) via the 3-hydroxy-medetomidine (3-OH-M) metabolite, post glucuronidase treatment and variable xylazine exposure (40/58 …
