For the desalination of brine and seawater, membrane distillation (MD) is a desirable treatment method. Because of their high permeability and rejection, electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) are becoming more popular in (MD) applications. Due to their unique features, superhydrophobic nanofibers have garnered much attention from scientists working to perfect high-efficiency MD membranes. In this work, a completely novel double-layer design approach for superhydrophobic membranes was proposed for water desalination using Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD). A double-layer of nonwoven nanofiber membranes was created using hydrophobic polymers via an electrospinning technique. Electrospinning created a double-layer membrane of nonwoven nanofibers utilizing hydrophobic …

Spectrophotometric Determination Of Bromhexine-Hcl By Using Prepared Silver Nanoparticles, Zainab Noori, Muna M. Khudhair

Baghdad Science Journal

In this study, a new, simple, and rapid method was developed for determining Bromhexine-HCl using silver nanoparticles. The solution of silver nanoparticles has a yellow color which has absorbency at a wavelength of 404 nm. Bromhexine was estimated through its reaction with silver nanoparticles in acidic environment at pH 5. This reaction causes the silver nanoparticles to aggregate and change the color of their colloidal solution from yellow to brown, leading to a decrease in their absorbance. The range of linearity was found to be 20-250μg mL-1, a limit of detection is equal to 18.931μg/mL and limit of quantitation is …

Porous cranial lesions (cribra cranii and cribra orbitalia) are widely used by archaeologists as skeletal markers of poor child health. However, their use has not been validated with systematic data from contemporary populations, where there has been little evidence of these lesions or their health relevance. Using 375 in vivo computed tomography scans from a cohort-representative sample of adults aged 40+ years from the Bolivian Amazon, among food-limited, high-mortality forager-farmers, we identified cribra cranii on 46 (12.3%) and cribra orbitalia on 23 (6%). Cribra orbitalia was associated with several hallmarks of compromised immune function, including fewer B cells, fewer naïve …

Living with a chronic health condition (CHC) can negatively impact quality of life (QoL) through a complex interaction of mental health challenges, functional limitations, and disease management demands. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a transdiagnostic approach that shows promise in addressing shared challenges across various CHCs by fostering psychological flexibility (PF). PF has been associated with improved QoL and functional outcomes and reduced psychological symptoms in individuals living with specific CHCs; yet its mediating role in these outcomes remains underexplored. This secondary analysis examined whether changes in PF mediated improvements in QoL, psychological symptoms, and functional impairment among individuals …

Correctional psychology, a subfield of psychology, has long been comprised of its own distinct purpose, focus, and competencies. Yet correctional psychology remains unrecognized today as a formal American Psychology Association (APA) specialization. Unlike forensic psychology, without an APA specialization, and subsequent structured training standards, scholars have argued that correctional mental health professionals may be ill-prepared to navigate unique ethical dilemmas inherent to the correctional environment. The present mixed analysis study aimed to contribute to this discussion by assessing psychology trainees’ ability to respond to hypothetical ethical dilemmas in a manner consistent with correctional environments, and whether prior correctional experience/ exposure …

Matter Of 57 Elmhurst, Llc V. New York State Div. Of Hous. & Community Renewal

All Decisions

The Appellate Division, Second Department, affirmed the Supreme Court's dismissal of a landlord's petition in an Article 78 proceeding. The court upheld a determination by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal that the landlord overcharged a tenant. The overcharge was caused by the landlord's unreasonable seven-year delay in applying rent increases. The court found that the DHCR's determination was not arbitrary and capricious, and had a rational basis in the record. The court's ruling reinforces the principle that it will not substitute its judgment for that of the DHCR when the agency's decision is well-founded.

Human impacts on carnivores are a persistent conservation challenge worldwide. We present a global analysis showing the overlap of conservation lands and the cumulative impact of humans on the distribution ranges of 257 terrestrial carnivore species. Our findings reveal that 64% of carnivore ranges overlap with areas characterized by high human pressures. We found that Indigenous peoples' lands emerge as crucial for carnivore population viability, potentially safeguarding 26% of carnivore ranges globally, while protected and wilderness areas cover roughly 10 and 16% of carnivore ranges, respectively. These three areas combined cover 35% of the global range of carnivores. Reducing human …

Calibration Of Detectors For The Tomographic Ionized-Carbon Mapping Experiment, Tessalie A. Caze-Cortes

Theses

Observations of the intensity of the sky at millimeter (mm) wavelengths require accurate calibrations for the spectrometers to work with radio telescopes. However, calibrating is a complex and lengthy process for sensitive detectors that catch single photons. To improve efficiency in locating defective detectors and optimizing bias current, my research involves taking data from previous lab characterizations and creating an algorithm that analyzes and plots the code of all 1920 detectors. This thesis will discuss the importance of mm-wavelength intensity mapping and the questions the TIME research team aims to address. Also, a detailed description of mechanical and computational components …

The People's Rivers: Early Environmental Regulation And The Oregon State Sanitary Authority, Avery Morgan Fischer Jul 2025

The People's Rivers: Early Environmental Regulation And The Oregon State Sanitary Authority, Avery Morgan Fischer

Dissertations and Theses

The environmental movement in Oregon can trace its origins to the turn of the twentieth century, where citizen activism and initiative led to the creation of an early environmental regulatory agency, the Oregon State Sanitary Authority. This creation established that the State of Oregon had a duty to preserve, not just the navigability or usability of rivers and waterways, but the quality and purity of its water. The Oregon State Sanitary Authority played an active role in maintaining and protecting the environment as a mandate of the people, and throughout its thirty-year existence battling industrial polluters, reluctant municipalities, and disinterested …

Protecting Cultural Heritage In A Changing Climate: A Risk Assessment Model For Galleries, Libraries, Archives, And Museums In Florida, United States, Emily E. Fisher

LSU Master's Theses

The aim of this research is to develop a climate threat risk assessment scale for galleries, libraries, archives, and museums within the State of Florida. Current research neglects the localized impact of tropical cyclones, inland flash flooding, and exposure to SLR on cultural institutions. Tropical cyclone events bring in flooding, intense wind speeds, and power outages which affect these institutions. Tropical cyclone data from the National Hurricane Center are used to represent historical wind occurrence. Finally, flash flood warning data are used to represent the flooding likelihood in each county. Each threat is assessed individually across Florida counties. The range …

'There Is That Of God In All Of Us': Church, State, And Restrictive Abortion Policies, Kimsey J. Stewart Jul 2025

'There Is That Of God In All Of Us': Church, State, And Restrictive Abortion Policies, Kimsey J. Stewart

LSU Master's Theses

Unsafe abortion affects millions of women around the globe every year. Unsafe abortions are more likely to occur in countries with restrictive abortion policies. Yet, these policies persist, and the worldwide trend of liberalization of abortion laws is at risk of reversal. There is a disconcerting lack of research regarding what factors cause governments to enact, retain, and enforce restrictive abortion policies. This paper is an attempt to fill in such a gap. I theorize that countries in which the government has closer ties with religious organizations will have more restrictive abortion policies. My results indicate that this is likely …

Dose Characterization Of Galactic Cosmic Rays In The Human Brain: A Phits-Based Study With A Segmented Anatomical Phantom, Shanice N. Manning

LSU Master's Theses

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are chronically exposed to a complex space radiation environment composed of galactic cosmic rays (GCR), solar particles, and Earth's trapped radiation. These high-energy particles interact with spacecraft shielding, producing secondary particles that can penetrate inside and deposit energy in sensitive tissues. Although animal studies have been useful in assessing space radiation risks, anatomical and physiological differences limit their applicability to human anatomy especially neuroanatomy. To address this gap, we developed a computational framework to model radiation dose distribution within the human brain using Monte Carlo simulations in Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code …

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) establishes persistent infection by integrating its proviral DNA into the host genome. While most integrated proviruses are defective, a small portion of proviruses are intact that represent a major obstacle to achieving an HIV cure. We have designed an approach for selective elimination of host cells harboring replication-competent HIV (SECH), through inhibition of autophagy and anti-apoptotic molecules during viral reactivation. However, the effects of SECH on the dynamics of intact and defective HIV provirus remain unclear.

Methods: We isolated DNA from HIV-infected samples after SECH treatments. We analyzed HIV-1 proviruses in these samples by intact …

The dynamics of neural circuits and their role in mediating cellular and organismal phenomena remain poorly understood, despite numerous efforts to dissect these processes through precise instantaneous measurements or longer-time averages and approximations. We use an alternative approach: we investigate these dynamics at the system's mesoscale by analyzing spike trains and waveforms. These extended activity patterns carry robust, tractable information, are highly responsive to physiological specifics, and enable detailed tracking of circuit behavior. In particular, this methodology allows for characterizing the functionality of tau-pathology-afflicted hippocampal circuits and identifying circuit-level abnormalities that are missed by through traditional analyses. In healthy mice, …

Pathological events often impact tissue regions in a spatial variable manner, making it challenging to identify therapeutic targets. Spatial transcriptomics (ST) is a powerful technology to map spatially variable molecular mechanisms, yet suitable analytical methods have been lacking. We introduce SPaSE (Spatially-resolved Pathology ScorE), an optimal transport-based algorithm to compare ST data from diseased and control tissues. SPaSE computes a “pathology score” for each spot in the diseased sample, quantifying the pathological impact at that spot. In post-MI (myocardial infarction) mouse hearts, these scores delineated zones that matched independent expert annotations. Modeling pathology scores from gene expression revealed signatures predictive …
