All Decisions

The court granted a partial dismissal of the holdover petition, ruling that service of the predicate notice was defective for most respondents. While it denied the motion to dismiss for lack of subject matter jurisdiction, finding no per se family exception, it found that the notice was not properly served on five of the six respondents. The court also denied the motion to join the building owner, stating that the claim of an "illusory tenancy" was not viable as pleaded and that a succession claim was premature. The case will proceed to trial against the single remaining respondent who was …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Choline has been recognized as an essential nutrient involved in various physiological functions critical to human health. Adequate daily intake of choline has been established by the US National Academy of Medicine in 1998, considering choline requirements for different ages, sex differences and physiological states (e.g., pregnancy). By serving as a precursor for acetylcholine and phospholipids, choline is important for cholinergic transmission and the structural integrity of cell membranes. In addition, choline is involved in lipid and cholesterol transport and serves as a methyl donor after oxidation to betaine. Extracellular choline is transported across the cell membrane via various transport …

Safeguarding Intellectual Property: A Strategic Imperative For Organizations, Alan Saquella

Publications

Intellectual property (IP) is more than a legal concept — it is the foundation of innovation and the engine that drives growth, differentiation, and long-term success. From proprietary algorithms to product designs, trade secrets, and customer data, IP represents the most valuable asset many organizations possess. When compromised, the damage can be severe — manifesting in lost revenue, competitive disadvantage, reputational harm, and in some cases, the collapse of entire business lines.

Biochemical And Proteomic Analyses Explain The Role Of Thiourea In Improving Tolerance Against Cadmium Toxicity In Maize, Mustafa Yildiz, Hakan Terzi̇, Nurgül Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Botany

Thiourea (TU), a sulfur-containing compound, is recognized for its ability to ameliorate the deleterious impacts of metal ions on plant growth. Nonetheless, the molecular mechanisms by which TU regulates metabolic activities in maize (Zea mays L.) under cadmium (Cd) stress remain largely unexplored. This study seeks to clarify how TU (35 μM) mitigates or enhances tolerance to Cd toxicity (50 μM) through physiological and proteomic methods. Cd exposure resulted in inhibited plant growth, leaf chlorosis, and lipid peroxidation; however, the addition of TU reduced Cd toxicity by decreasing Cd accumulation and modulating antioxidant enzyme activity. The global proteome profile was …

Healing Circulos(Circles): Putting Our Educator's Mask First, Janet Martinez-Angeles Jul 2025

Healing Circulos(Circles): Putting Our Educator's Mask First, Janet Martinez-Angeles

Dissertations

Educators play a pivotal role in supporting students throughout their educational journeys. In addition to academic instruction, they provide vital guidance for students' social, emotional, and personal development. They work tirelessly to help students navigate the complexities of education and life, often while shouldering multiple responsibilities and roles beyond the classroom. This dynamic contributes to high attrition rates and weakens the educational system. Much like the familiar safety instructions on an airplane, where passengers are reminded to put on their oxygen masks before assisting others, educators must be given the space, resources, and support to tend to their well-being before …

Anti-Nociceptive Properties Of Cardiopulmonary Baroreceptors In Patients With Chronic Back Pain, Yuto Iwakuma, Jennifer Liu, Davina A. Clonch, Megan E. Gangwish, Christopher M. Lam, Seth W. Holwerda

Student Publications

Introduction: Reduced pain perception following a persistent noxious stimulus during a study session (short-term habituation) is believed to be partially mediated by descending inhibitory mechanisms, although these mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. We examined the hypothesis that cardiopulmonary baroreceptor would significantly increase short-term habituation in chronic back pain (CBP) patients.

Methods: A short-term habituation protocol was utilized that involved 1-sec pulses (×10) at 105% heat pain threshold on the anterior forearm at 0.5 Hz. Cardiopulmonary baroreceptor unloading was performed via lower body negative pressure (LBNP) that reduces central venous pressure to elicit a reflex increase in sympathetic nerve activity. …

In phase III oncology trials, superiority is defined by statistical significance using P thresholds. However, this approach has been criticized because P is continuous. Here, we reconstruct patient-level data for 230 phase III oncology trials to model the robustness of statistical significance by estimating the survival-inferred fragility index (SIFI), defined as the smallest number of patients changing arms that alters the statistical significance interpretation. The median SIFI was 8 patients (IQR 4-19), representing 1.4% of enrollments (IQR 0.7%-3%). As a continuous statistic, P-but not the significance interpretation-was correlated with SIFI. Moreover, overall survival endpoints were more fragile than surrogate endpoints. …

School of Health Professions

Well-being captures an individual’s capacity to lead a mean ingful and engaged life. Interventions to address well-being go beyond managing symptoms or supporting daily activity performance. Designing trials to evaluate the effectiveness of such well-being interventions can be challenging. One such challenge is determining what the comparator or control arm should be. Several trials of complex interventions use usual care as a comparator, but this can be particularly challenging when planning trials across multiple countries and health care systems. Therefore, trial design decisions must be informed by a good understanding of what constitutes usual or routine well-being interventions across locations. …

Energetic And Economic Aspects Of Rebound, Part Ii: Applications Of The Framework, Matthew Kuperus Heun, Gregor Semieniuk, Paul E. Brockway

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Widespread implementation of energy efficiency is a key greenhouse gas emissions mitigation measure, but rebound can “take back” energy savings. However, the absence of solid analytical foundations hinders empirical determination of rebound magnitudes. In Part I, we developed foundations of a rigorous, analytical, consumer-sided rebound framework that is approachable for both energy analysts and economists. In this paper (Part II), we develop energy, expenditure, and consumption planes, a novel, mutually consistent, and numerically precise way to visualize and illustrate rebound. Further, we operationalize the macro factor () for macroeconomic rebound. Using the framework and rebound planes, we calculate and show …

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), either as monotherapy (ICI-Mono) or combined with chemotherapy (ICI-Chemo), improves survival in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, prospective guidance for choosing between these options remains limited, and single-feature biomarkers like PD-L1 prove inadequate. We develop a machine learning model using clinicogenomic data from four cohorts (MD Anderson n = 750; Mayo Clinic n = 80; Dana-Farber n = 1077; Stand Up To Cancer n = 393) to predict individual benefit from adding chemotherapy. Benefit scores are calculated using five distinct functions derived from 28 genomic and 6 clinical features. Our integrated model, A-STEP (Attention-based …
