The court granted a pro se petitioner's illegal lockout claim, ordering restoration to an apartment he shared with the deceased tenant of record. The court rejected the landlord's "futility doctrine" argument, which claimed the petitioner had no independent right to possession. Relying on the reasoning from a recent Appellate Term, Second Department decision in **Rodriguez v. Hub Bk LLC**, the court determined that as a lawful occupant who had resided in the apartment for at least thirty days, the petitioner was entitled to the protections of a formal legal proceeding before being evicted, regardless of his ultimate possessory rights.

Synopsis
Across teleosts, feeding by biting substrate-attached prey has evolved multiple times and is associated with convergent morphologies that include a deep body and an elongated, tapered head. However, the functional role of these morphologies in substrate-biting fish is not established. Here, we tested the hypothesis that these morphologies function as control surfaces that affect feeding kinematics during biting. To test this hypothesis, we used simplified physical models of substrate-biting reef fish and examined the role of head, body, and fin morphology in determining feeding kinematics that facilitate the removal of substrate-attached prey. Models simulated the swift lateral movement of …

Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen
Towards Scalable Taxi Demand Prediction, Yifei Shen
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Accurate taxi demand prediction is essential for optimizing urban mobility systems across varying spatial-temporal resolutions and data conditions. Scalable taxi demand prediction refers to the capability of forecasting models to adapt to different granularities of spatial and temporal data while maintaining prediction accuracy, a critical requirement for practical urban applications ranging from fleet management to transportation planning. However, two fundamental challenges impede this scalability: data sparsity and multi-resolution forecasting requirements. Data sparsity, particularly pronounced in high-resolution predictions where numerous regions exhibit minimal activity, significantly compromises model performance. Concurrently, different urban applications necessitate predictions at varying temporal and spatial granularities, requiring …

Unpacking Digital Transformation – Constructing A Framework Based On Industry Use Cases, Khawaja Asjad Saeed, Andrew William Green, Alison Brooke Hedrick
Faculty Articles
Based on industry use cases, we identify six distinct types of digital transformation (DT), each grounded in a specific concept or enabling technology. These DT types can be implemented individually or combined to drive transformation initiatives. While deploying a single DT type often focuses on improving operational efficiency or streamlining existing workflows, initiatives that combine multiple DT types tend to pursue more ambitious goals, such as the creation of new products, services, or business models. However, the complexity increases significantly with the integration of multiple DT types, as organizations must not only address behavioral changes but also overcome technical challenges …

Engagement, Motivation, And Interest In K-12 Science Education, Neil T M Bailie
Masters Projects
Interest, motivation, and engagement amongst science students is declining. This decline is primarily due to a loss of interest, motivation, self-efficacy, and perceived utility value (Bathgate & Schunn, 2017; Britner, 2008; Kraft, 2017). With crucial topics such as climate change and the legitimacy of vaccines coming under scrutiny, it is vital for our society that we keep our secondary students actively engaged and motivated with the science that they are learning in the classroom (Kolenatý et al., 2024; Schlopsna & Scheersoi, 2024). The main goal of this project was to create a complete unit curriculum covering the topics of the …

Mixed Galerkin- Implicit Differences Methods For Solving Couple Nonlinear Parabolic System With Constant Coefficients, Wafaa Abd Ibrahim, Jamil A. Ali Al-Hawasy
Mixed Galerkin- Implicit Differences Methods For Solving Couple Nonlinear Parabolic System With Constant Coefficients, Wafaa Abd Ibrahim, Jamil A. Ali Al-Hawasy
Baghdad Science Journal
In this paper, the mixed Galerkin- implicit difference method (MGIFDM) is used to solve a couple of nonlinear systems of parabolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients which are abbreviated by (CNPSCC). At first the weak form of the CNPSCC is formulated and then it is discretized using the proposed method, the method mixes the Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) in space variables with the implicit finite difference method (IFDM) in time variables, so the method was named by MGIFDM. At any discrete time tj the method transforms the CNPSCC into a couple Galerkin nonlinear algebraic system (CGNAS), which is …

A Study Of The Atangana Baleanu Fractional Differential Equation With An Application In Gas Dynamic Problem, Amjad Shaikh, Shashikant Waghule, Dinkar Patil, Kottakkaran Sooppy Nisar
Baghdad Science Journal
This article presents an analytical approximation for the nonlinearity of the fractional order gas dynamics equation in both homogeneous and nonhomogeneous cases, with a particular emphasis on shock fronts. The approach utilizes the fractional differentiation operator proposed by Atangana and Baleanu. By employing this operator, an approximate solution for the fractional order gas dynamic equations in scenarios involving shock fronts is derived. The solution process primarily involves an iterative procedure that leverages the Laplace transform for numerical computations. The use of the Laplace transform minimizes round-off errors, resulting in a solution that is both precise and straightforward to implement. The …

U-Rich Elements Drive Pervasive Cryptic Splicing In 3' Utr Massively Parallel Reporter Assays, Khoa Dao, Courtney F Jungers, Sergej Djuranovic, Anthony M Mustoe
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Untranslated RNA sequences play essential roles in orchestrating gene expression. However, the sequence codes and mechanisms underpinning post-transcriptional regulation remain incompletely understood. Here, we revisit the finding from a prior massively parallel reporter assay (MPRA) that AU-rich elements in 3' untranslated regions (3' UTRs) can drive upregulation or downregulation of mRNA expression depending on 3' UTR context. We unexpectedly discover that this variable regulation arises from widespread cryptic splicing, predominately from an unannotated splice donor in the coding sequence of GFP to diverse acceptor sites in reporter 3' UTRs. Splicing is activated by U-rich sequences, which function as potent position-dependent …

Resistance to multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) is a major clinical concern in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Herein, we aimed to uncover the mechanisms underlying pan-TKI resistance and to identify potential therapeutic targets. We used multiple TKI-resistant HCC cell lines to identify caveolin-1 (CAV1) as a key driver of therapeutic resistance. CAV1 downregulation induced apoptosis, inhibited metastasis and restored TKI sensitivity in both inherent and acquired TKI-resistant HCC cells. Mechanistically, in acquired TKI-resistant cells aberrant CAV1/STAT3/P70S6K signalling is required for their survival, motility, and invasiveness. CAV1 inhibition reduced expression of dormancy regulators E-cadherin, RAC1 and p21, enhanced cancer stemness markers, and …
