Phase-change materials (PCMs) are essential for achieving tunability of metasurfaces. However, they frequently face limitations in the long-wave infrared range because of their lossy behavior. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a thermally tunable mid-infrared nanocavity resonance from coupled surface plasmon-phonon polaritons that are supported within a trilayer structure of metal-PCM layer-polar dielectric (Au-VO2-SiC). The top metal structures configure the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance near 840 cm−1 (11.9 µm), which is sensitively tunable and reversible with small changes in the VO2 refractive index ∆n near below its insulator-to-metal phase transition temperature where the loss is small. The maximum resonance shift of 7.7 cm−1 …

The results indicated generally low access to TB information and services, with only 2% of nomadic Fulani engaging in TB prevention activities compared to 6.7% of host community members. Yoruba respondents had significantly higher odds …

Bold New Bioweapons: Part 2 — Bold Bolstering Of Deterrence And Defense, James Giordano Jul 2025

Bold New Bioweapons: Part 2 — Bold Bolstering Of Deterrence And Defense, James Giordano

Strategic Insights

This commentary, Pt. 2 of the Bold New Bioweapons series, argues that modern biological threats demand a proactive transformation of deterrence and defense strategies. Building on earlier analysis of detection and attribution challenges, Dr. Giordano asserts that emerging life sciences and related technologies, such as synthetic biology, gene editing, and AI-driven bioengineering blur distinctions between legitimate research and weaponizable capabilities. This undermines traditional deterrence frameworks. To address these complexities, the article proposes adaptive, interoperable, and ethical approaches that integrate advanced biosurveillance, precision bioinformatics, AI-enabled threat modeling, and global collaborative governance. It emphasizes the need for robust international norms and resilient …

Enhancing Public Transit By Integrating On-Demand And Fixed Route Transit Services: A Focus On Implementation, Adaption, Equity, And Acceptance, Avani Aravind

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As cities seek to build inclusive, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems, the integration of on-demand mobility services with traditional fixed-route transit (FRT) offers a promising solution to enhance coverage and connectivity. However, challenges persist in evaluating the cost-effectiveness, accessibility, and user acceptance of such integrated systems. This dissertation presents a comprehensive, three-part framework that addresses these gaps by (1) developing a simulation-based, pre-implementation cost evaluation model, (2) assessing the accessibility and equity outcomes of integrated systems, and (3) exploring the effectiveness of behavioral nudges in influencing transit adoption. The first study introduces an agent-based simulation model to evaluate generalized system …

House Finches Lose Feeding Preferences During Infection: Behavioral Changes With Implications For Pathogen Spread, Francis Edward Tillman Jul 2025

House Finches Lose Feeding Preferences During Infection: Behavioral Changes With Implications For Pathogen Spread, Francis Edward Tillman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Foraging is a fundamental behavior that animals use to acquire food resources. Because these resources are critical for survival and reproduction, animals are often thought to forage optimally, maximizing resource intake per unit of time. While the foraging behaviors of healthy animals often align with such predictions, we know little about how or if these predictions hold true in sick animals. This is especially relevant when considering sickness behaviors, or changes in behavior that accompany infection and frequently include lethargy and anorexia, both of which may alter foraging decisions or ability. Because food resources often cause animals to aggregate, a …

Do Mergers Drive Smbh-Galaxy Coevolution? Comparison Of Feeding And Feedback In Single And Dual Agn, Mason Ruby Jul 2025

Do Mergers Drive Smbh-Galaxy Coevolution? Comparison Of Feeding And Feedback In Single And Dual Agn, Mason Ruby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While super massive black holes (SMBHs) are known to exist at the center of all massive galaxies, we have yet to understand the processes by which gas flows from kpc scales to within pcs of the SMBH, thereby accreting and triggering an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Additionally, while AGN-driven feedback in the form of kpc-scale winds and jets is induced to explain the observed excess quenching of star-formation, the mechanisms of AGN-driven feedback and its relevance compared to star-formation-driven feedback are not well understood. AGN feeding and feedback are instrumental to SMBH-galaxy coevolution, and determining the processes involved is imperative …

A Tale Of Two Worlds: A Framework For Translating Literary Fiction Into Architectural Space, Timothy D. Anderson Jul 2025

A Tale Of Two Worlds: A Framework For Translating Literary Fiction Into Architectural Space, Timothy D. Anderson

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Authors and orators have employed fictional stories for thousands of years as a crucial method for translating narratives, lessons, and intangible culture. These take shape through diverse art forms such as spoken word, visual art, dance, and sculpture. However, in the current age, architecture often neglects its immersive and spatial potential, allowing stories of a site’s heritage to become lost beneath the layers of urban development. This thesis explores design as storytelling, examining how fictional narratives can be translated into architectural space.

The research draws on fictional and speculative narrative architecture, analyzing the use of metaphor, symbol, and allegory as …

All Decisions

The court denied the tenant's motion to dismiss a holdover case, ruling that the petitioner, a new owner who acquired a foreclosed property, could properly proceed against the former owners as "tenants at sufferance." The tenant argued that no landlord-tenant relationship existed and therefore the case was improperly brought under RPAPL § 711. The court held that a tenancy at sufferance arises when an occupant remains after their possessory interest terminates, and the new owner's service of an RPL § 228 notice was the correct procedure to terminate this tenancy. The landlord's reference to the wrong statute in the petition …

“Silent Is Not Actually Silent”: An Investigation Of Toxicity On Bug Report Discussion, Mia Mohammad Imran, Jaydeb Sarker

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Toxicity in bug report discussions poses significant challenges to the collaborative dynamics of open-source software development. Bug reports are crucial for identifying and resolving defects, yet their inherently problem-focused nature and emotionally charged context make them susceptible to toxic interactions. This study explores toxicity in GitHub bug reports through a qualitative analysis of 203 bug threads, including 81 toxic ones. Our findings reveal that toxicity frequently arises from misaligned perceptions of bug severity and priority, unresolved frustrations with tools, and lapses in professional communication. These toxic interactions not only derail productive discussions but also reduce the likelihood of actionable outcomes, …

Llput: Investigating Large Language Models For Bug Report-Based Input Generation, Alif Al Hasan, Subarna Saha, Mia Mohammad Imran, Tarannum Shaila Zaman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Failure-inducing inputs play a crucial role in diagnosing and analyzing software bugs. Bug reports typically contain these inputs, which developers extract to facilitate debugging. Since bug reports are written in natural language, prior research has leveraged various Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques for automated input extraction. With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), an important research question arises: how effectively can generative LLMs extract failure-inducing inputs from bug reports? In this paper, we propose LLPut, a technique to empirically evaluate the performance of three open-source generative LLMs-LLaMA, Qwen, and Qwen-Coder-in extracting relevant inputs from bug reports. We conduct an …

Ai-Based Object Detection And Risk Identification For Enhanced Construction Site Safety, Mahdi Bonyaniakbarabadi

LSU Master's Theses

Recent advancements in computer vision for construction site safety have encountered significant hurdles, especially in the nuanced tasks of object detection and the identification of unsafe worker behaviors. These challenges are often exacerbated by complex and cluttered backgrounds, wide variations in object scale, and inconsistent image quality. While existing methodologies have utilized attention mechanisms to analyze spatial and temporal features, they frequently neglect the benefits of adaptive sampling and channel-wise feature adjustments, thereby failing to exploit potential spatiotemporal redundancies. This thesis introduces a two-pronged approach to address these limitations. First, we propose the Optimized-Position Network (OP-Net), a novel architecture for …

A Multi-Scale Numerical Analysis Of Wave Propagation Through Coastal Vegetation Using Proteus & Xbeach, Cole M. Statler Jul 2025

A Multi-Scale Numerical Analysis Of Wave Propagation Through Coastal Vegetation Using Proteus & Xbeach, Cole M. Statler

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal vegetation attenuates waves in the nearshore zone and protects shorelines from storm surge and wave action. It also traps nutrients and sediment, and participates in the formation of land over longer time scales. These features of vegetation make it a common component of nature-based engineering projects. Interaction of water waves and flow with vegetation, however, can involve unsteady and turbulent flow, non-hyrdostatic pressure effects, and air entrainment that can hinder the use of simple parametric representations of vegetation drag. XBeach, a one- and two-dimensional production model applies reduced-order methods, prioritizing computational efficiency. Vegetation is represented in XBeach as a …

The differentiation and suppressive functions of regulatory CD4 T cells (Tregs) are supported by a broad array of metabolic changes, providing potential therapeutic targets for immune modulation. In this study, we focused on the regulatory role of glycolytic enzymes in Tregs and identified phosphoglycerate mutase (PGAM) as being differentially overexpressed in Tregs and associated with a highly suppressive phenotype. Pharmacologic or genetic inhibition of PGAM reduced Treg differentiation and suppressive function while reciprocally inducing markers of a pro-inflammatory, T helper 17 (Th17)-like state. The regulatory role of PGAM was dependent on the contribution of 3-phosphoglycerate (3 PG), the PGAM substrate, …

Essays On Stablecoins’ Stability, Ravi Joshi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I present three independent essays that contribute to the literature on stablecoins, the run-on stablecoin (Terra), and the information narrative surrounding the run. The first essay offers a comprehensive overview of the stablecoin ecosystem, the structural frictions that challenge peg maintenance, and the evolving regulatory landscape governing stablecoin issuance and use. In the second essay, I investigate the collapse of the TerraUSD (UST) algorithmic stablecoin and provide evidence that the collapse mimicked a run by demonstrating liquidity shortages on centralized exchanges. I show that Terra’s arbitrage mechanism broke on May 7, 2022, and that sustained price deviations …

Characterization Of The Role Of Rsd-6, A Tudor Domain Protein, In Antiviral Rnai Pathway In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Krishna Prasad Dahal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

RNA interference (RNAi) triggered by virus produced dsRNA intermediate offers robust innate immunity against invading viruses in plants, insects and animals. Caenorhabditis elegans has been extensively used as a model organism to study host virus interaction. Recently, a forward genetic screen identified RNAi spreading deficient-6 (RSD-6), a Tudor domain protein, as a key component in antiviral RNAi pathway against Orsay virus in C. elegans but its contribution in the pathway remained unclear. Here, we generated a rsd-6 null allele using CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, crossed it with other known RNAi mutants and analyzed Orsay virus replication in them and in combination …

The Biophysical Basis For Karyopherin-Dependent Ebola Virus Vp24 Nuclear Transport, Junjie Zhao, Bojie Zhang, Olivia Vogel, Benjamin W Walker, Leonard W Ma, Nicole D Wagner, Christopher F Basler, Daisy W Leung, Michael L Gross, Gaya K Amarasinghe

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Nucleocytoplasmic trafficking is a highly regulated process that allows the cell to control the partitioning of proteins and nucleic acids between the cytosolic and nuclear compartments. The Ebola virus minor matrix protein VP24 (eVP24) hijacks this process by binding to a region on the NPI-1 subfamily of karyopherin alpha (KPNA) nuclear importers. This region overlaps with the activated transcription factor STAT1 binding site on KPNAs, preventing STAT1 nuclear localization and activation of antiviral gene transcription. However, the molecular interactions of eVP24-KPNA5 binding that lead to the nuclear localization of eVP24 remain poorly characterized. Here, we show that trafficking of eVP24 …

Optimal Water Hammer Protection Strategies For Low-Head Hydraulic Systems: A Case Study Using Bentley Hammer, Ahmed A. Abdel-Naby, Mostafa A. Abdel-Moaty, Eslam R. Lotfy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The analysis of water hammer in low-head hydraulic systems holds significant importance compared to that in high-head systems, particularly given instances where Thorley’s equation may fall short in providing accurate pump inertia values. In situations where manufacturer data are unavailable, proactive measures to mitigate potential hammering incidents become imperative. While Bentley HAMMER software provides robust simulation capabilities, optimal protection strategies for low-head systems remain underexplored. This case study focuses on a scenario involving multistage centrifugal pumps that lift water from the basement floor of a building to its roof via a polypropylene pipeline. The investigation revealed a novel configuration: relocating …

The Impact Of Weaponizing Womens Political Rights On Democratic Bscksliding: A Case Study Of Sheikha Hasina (Pm Of Bangladesh), Nouran Mousa Abdelaziz

The World Research of Political Science Journal

This paper examines how authoritarian leaders can strategically weaponise womens political rights to keep power and conceal democratic backsliding, using Prime Minister Sheikha Hasinas administration in Bangladesh as an example. Using the historical institutionalism framework, the paper investigates how Hasinas government fostered gender-based legislation and representation while eroding democratic institutions. Through a qualitative analysis of legislation amendments, political discourse, and institutional changes from 2019 to 2024, the study demonstrates how symbolic empowerment of women was used to legitimise a more autocratic state. The findings show that perceived gender progress was frequently utilised to cover up both internal and foreign criticism, …
