Algorithmic Recourse In Sequential Decision-Making For Long-Term Fairness, Francisco Gumucio
Algorithmic Recourse In Sequential Decision-Making For Long-Term Fairness, Francisco Gumucio
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Algorithmic decision-making systems are increasingly being deployed in high-stakes domains such as criminal justice, education, and financial services. While machine learning models have demonstrated significant utility in automating complex decisions, they have also raised substantial concerns regarding fairness and equity. Much of the existing work in algorithmic fairness has focused on static, one-shot settings, where interventions are aimed at miti- gating bias in a single decision. However, many real-world systems operate sequentially, where decisions made at one point in time can influence future outcomes through dynamic feedback loops. In such scenarios, addressing fairness at only one decision point can be …

Analysis Of The Scleroderma / Systemic Sclerosis Etiopathology Using The University Of California At Davis (Ucd)-Ssc Chicken Line, Angeline E. Rodriguez
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scleroderma/Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a multifaceted autoimmune disorder affecting approximately 300,000 people in the United States. Main features include vasculitis, immune dysfunction (innate and adaptive), autoantibody production, perivascular leukocyte infiltration, and extensive tissue fibrosis. The University of California, Davis (UCD) SSc chicken line was shown to exhibit all clinical and biological manifestations of human SSc. One early and distinctive clinical sign in both humans and UCD-SSc chickens is Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP), characterized by decreased blood flow in extremities and skin lesions. RP-like lesions develop in combs of UCD-SSc chickens within one- to two-weeks post-hatch, progressing from erythema and edema to …

Framing The Problem To Meet The Policy Solution: An Embedded Mixed Methods Case Study Of The 2017 Michigan Opioid Laws, Leandra Hawkins Burke
Dissertations
The opioid crisis presents a wicked problem for public administration. Hundreds of thousands of people have died from opioid overdoses in the United States, and countless others have experienced severe opioid-related physical, psychological, and socioeconomic harms. Countering the opioid crisis has been difficult due to interdependencies across different drugs and multiple pathways for abuse and dependence. Many scholars, health providers, and politicians have called for a broad public health approach to combat the opioid crisis, but the full expanse of what that would entail has not yet been realized. What has been demonstrated is that interactions targeting a single aspect …
Examination Of The Association Between Parent Beliefs About Injury And Supervision Behavior, Felicia Acelia Diaz
Examination Of The Association Between Parent Beliefs About Injury And Supervision Behavior, Felicia Acelia Diaz
Dissertations
Unintentional Injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 2021). Several studies have indicated that caregiver beliefs (such as locus of control) are associated with children’s injury risk (Damashek et al., 2005), but few studies have examined whether caregiver beliefs about injury are related to caregiver’s injury prevention behaviors, such as caregiver supervision. Examination of caregiver beliefs regarding supervision revealed that caregiver’s degree of belief in the preventability of childhood injuries predicted self-report scores on several measures of supervision. Caregiver’s degree of …

Ramsey theory, though a relatively young branch of mathematics, has captivated the attention of graph theorists, combinatorialists, and theoretical computer scientists alike through its raw beauty, versatility, and powerful applications. Before it emerged as a branch of mathematics, the central idea of Ramsey theory appeared in the form of three lemmas in three separate papers by three different mathematicians working on three distinct areas of research. The first such lemma was published by David Hilbert in 1892, followed by the second lemma published by Issai Schur in 1916. However, Frank Ramsey’s renowned lemma, published in 1930, compelled mathematicians to establish …

High Value Transnational Adhesion Contracts: Agreements With Sport Governing Bodies And Their Fundamental Defects, Bantekas, Ilias
High Value Transnational Adhesion Contracts: Agreements With Sport Governing Bodies And Their Fundamental Defects, Bantekas, Ilias
Santa Clara Journal of International Law
Athletes are bound not simply on the basis of their individual agreement with their club, but also by a variety of rules and regulations imposed by national and international sport governing bodies (SGB or SGBs). These rules and regulations become part of the original agreement as part of the obligations of the club towards these entities. The athlete’s acceptance of the myriad of rules and regulations is simply notional, given their complexity even for legal experts. Even so, this type of sporting agreement does not possess the attributes of adhesion contracts that protect the weaker party through a variety of …
Correcting Antitrust Monopsony Theory And Addressing Anticompetitive Conduct In Low-Skill Labor Markets, Grimes, Warren
Correcting Antitrust Monopsony Theory And Addressing Anticompetitive Conduct In Low-Skill Labor Markets, Grimes, Warren
Santa Clara Law Review
Addressing growing income inequality in the United States should begin with the plight of low-skilled workers, many subject to below subsistence income and stressful and dangerous working conditions. Antitrust cannot offer a comprehensive solution to this problem. It can, however, meaningfully contribute to a solution in two ways. The first is to adjust the classic definition of monopsony to address the special conditions that apply to unskilled labor markets and to clear away obstacles to meritorious antitrust claims. Under classic theory, a monopsonist lowers input prices causing some input providers to stop supplying. That premise, while it may hold for …

Development And Validation Of A Baseline Clinical Tool For Primary Care Providers To Address Nicotine Delivery System Usage In Adolescents, Monica M. Janssen
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Family practice providers are a pillar of the health care system as demonstrated through helping patients of all ages achieve health. Adolescents are a unique patient population in an age where they are moving toward adulthood, out of childhood, and vulnerable to influence. Providers could help adolescents shape their future in health through prevention. Preventative care including evidence-based evaluations and treatments could provide adolescents with a strong foundation in healthy adulthood. Adolescent electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use is a public health issue that increases the risk of nicotine addiction and long-term health consequences. Giving providers tools to assist in …

Event-Related Threats In The United States: Analysis Of Plots And Incidents From 1970–2024, Tin L. Nguyen, Erin M. Kearns, Callie Vitro, Sarah Schappert, Cynthia Kennedy, Allison E. Munderloh
Reports, Projects, and Research
In an analysis of 42 plots against public event venues in the U.S. (1970–2024), NCITE researchers understand how completed attacks against events compare to failed or foiled attempts. NCITE researchers compiled open-source cases, coded venue/event, incident, and attacker features, and derived findings using data analysis methods alongside behavioral indicators from the Terrorism Radicalization Assessment Protocol (TRAP‑18). The study finds that larger and outdoor events are frequent targets; weapons vary more with event size, with improvised explosive devices (IEDs) concentrated at outdoor venues; most plots aim to strike during events; and leakage (communications that reveal intent) is common in foiled cases. …

Counteracting Cascades Challenge The Heterogeneity-Stability Relationship, Jordi Sola, Tom P. Fairchild, Matthew J. Perkins, James C. Bull, John N. Griffin
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Spatial environmental heterogeneity is widely assumed to enhance ecological stability by promoting refugia, biodiversity and asynchrony. Yet, we lack field experiments testing this fundamental relationship and its underlying mechanisms in naturally assembled multitrophic systems. To address this gap, we monitored experimental substrates replicating topographic heterogeneity on a rocky shore over 3 years. Contrary to theory, heterogeneity showed no net effect on community stability due to four counteracting pathways. Heterogeneity increased stability by (i) providing refugia that enhanced population stability and (ii) boosting species richness, which promoted asynchrony. At the same time, it decreased stability by (iii) reducing a dominant non-native …
Caste Formalism: The Law And Politics Of Equality In India, Madhav Khosla, Pratap Bhanu Mehta
Caste Formalism: The Law And Politics Of Equality In India, Madhav Khosla, Pratap Bhanu Mehta
Faculty Scholarship
In modern constitutional democracies, achieving equality has long been a challenge. In recent years, theorists have focused on understanding the meaning of discrimination and determining when and how discrimination becomes problematic. One critical issue that has long animated discussions on both the general guarantee of equality and the specific goals of anti-discrimination law is the relationship between individuals and groups. If a constitutional order aims to take equality seriously, how should it address the experiences of specific groups historically subjected to discrimination? Indeed, questions of equality and discrimination often converge around the issue of affirmative action, sometimes at the expense …

Too Many Mergers? The Golden Parachute As A Driver Of M&A Activity In The 21st Century, Jeffrey N. Gordon
Faculty Scholarship
This Article argues that the corporate governance regime in the United States has produced a level of mergers and acquisition activity greater than the social optimum because of the current version of the “golden parachute,” a super-bonus payoff to a target CEO. In the late nineteenth through the twentieth century, M&A activity was characterized by “waves” that reflected adaptations to changing external environment, whether the efficient production frontier, regulatory constraints, or capital market developments. Economically-motivated parties saw the opportunities in changing the boundaries of the firm; successful first-movers spawned imitators, hence a wave, which eventually subsided, often alongside deteriorating capital …
Consumer Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice For Animal-Raising And Environment-Related Labeling Claims, Andrew Joseph Dilley
Consumer Knowledge, Attitude, And Practice For Animal-Raising And Environment-Related Labeling Claims, Andrew Joseph Dilley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the fall of 2024, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) updated its guidelines for substantiating animal-raising and environment-related claims used on meat and poultry products. The updates aim to address numerous comments and petitions from industry stakeholders by improving guidance and strengthening the documentation recommended for substantiation. While the updates included both minor and substantial revisions, the most notable addition was the strong emphasis on the inclusion of a third-party certification in the substantiating documents. The timely update comes on the heels of heightened scrutiny regarding animal-raising claims, as issues of non-compliance and agency oversight have continued to …
Backpack Funding: What Happens When Dollars Follow The Student?, Alison Heape Johnson
Backpack Funding: What Happens When Dollars Follow The Student?, Alison Heape Johnson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A growing movement in the United States in recent years, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has brought a wave of school choice policies, which allow students to opt into an educational arrangement outside of their zoned traditional public schools (TPS) using public funds. Critics frequently express concern that these policies place an undue financial burden on both taxpayers and school districts. States adopting such policies may take on the additional financial responsibility of educating students who would otherwise privately finance their education, posing an additional cost to the state. When students do leave TPS to participate in private school choice …
The Market For Local Beef And Local Beef Processing Investment In Arkansas., Rebekah O'Neal
The Market For Local Beef And Local Beef Processing Investment In Arkansas., Rebekah O'Neal
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the U.S. food supply chain, particularly in the beef sector, where processing bottlenecks and labor shortages disrupted meat production and the market. In response, several policies were implemented to strengthen food system resilience, and significant funding was allocated to expand independent meat processing capacity nationwide. However, the long-term viability of expanding regional processing capacity remains uncertain, notably in Arkansas, a net exporter of live cattle. This study evaluates whether consumer demand supports the expansion of local beef processing in Arkansas. Using a dichotomous choice survey, we estimate market shares for beef labeled “Arkansas Grown” …

There is a certain duality to the role of librarians in higher education as the job requires preparing students for their current academic work, such as doing research for writing papers, while at the same time preparing students for their future professional information work. Librarians seeking guidance on teaching information literacy more comprehensively are left to study the professional standards of the targeted professional group, and find or carry out research on these practitioners. Synthesizing and translating these findings into instructional approaches while staying true to existing information literacy standards, however, can be challenging. In this chapter we demonstrate how …

A Tale Of Two Toxicants: Investigating The Interaction Between Hexavalent Chromium And Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid., Morgan Elizabeth Delnicki
A Tale Of Two Toxicants: Investigating The Interaction Between Hexavalent Chromium And Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid., Morgan Elizabeth Delnicki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmental contaminants of major public health concern. Despite commonly being found together in contaminated drinking water, no studies have considered the concomitant health effects of Cr(VI) and PFAS, specifically perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). In vitro studies using CHO cells assessed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Cr(VI) and PFAS both individually and in combination. Intracellular and extracellular Cr levels were measured with Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. PFOS was found to exacerbate Cr(VI) induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Additionally, a novel in vivo model of studying the hepatotoxicity of Cr(VI) was established. Adult Hartley …

Exploring Hexavalent Chromium Exposure And Lipid Accumulation In Liver Disease., Gabrielle Celine Griffin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of MASLD has doubled over the past 20 years and continues to rise. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], a top chemical hazard in U.S. drinking water, is emerging as potential risk factor for liver disease. To study the impact of Cr(VI) and high-fat diet on MASLD, we developed an in vivo model using Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to Cr(VI) in drinking water (0, 0.05, or 0.1 mg/L) and fed normal or high-fat diet for 90 days. High-fat diet significantly increased body mass, plasma lipoproteins, cholesterol, liver injury, and hepatic triglycerides, which were exacerbated by Cr(VI) exposure. Cr(VI) alone increased hepatic chromium …

An Exploration Of Lgbtq+ Runner Motivation And Constraints., Michael Clemons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Running offers extensive benefits beyond physical fitness, encompassing mental, emotional, and social advantages. However, LGBTQ+ individuals face unique challenges in participating in the running community, which remains predominantly White, cisgender, and heterosexual. With the LGBTQ+ population in the U.S. growing, there is a need to understand their motivations and barriers to participation in running events and training groups. This study explores these motivations using self-determination theory, comparing LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ runners to identify differences in driving factors such as social connectivity, self-esteem, and competition. Additionally, it examines barriers LGBTQ+ runners face, ranging from structural obstacles to intrapersonal challenges, and how …

Trauma Network Design Considering Patient Safety And Cost., Lin Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trauma, as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity for those under the age of 45 in the US, incurs trillions in annual economic costs. The time-sensitive nature of trauma treatment necessitates an effective, coordinated regional trauma system to optimize patient safety. However, the financial burden associated with trauma care, especially due to low-insured population, presents a significant challenge to the financial health of trauma centers (TCs). To address critical challenges in this domain and provide much-needed insights to trauma decision-makers regarding their trauma system cost, network design, and subsidy policy, this dissertation proposes 3 contributions. First, we introduce an …

Analysis Of An Ethanol Sensitive Bmp-Nkx2.3-Fgf Signaling Pathway In Pouch Morphogenesis., Hieu Dai Le Vo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Craniofacial malformations lie at the heart of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). While there is growing evidence for a genetic component to FASD, little is known of the cellular mechanisms underlying these ethanol-sensitive loci in facial development. Bone Morphogenetic Protein (Bmp) signaling pathway dependent pouch formation is a key mechanism in facial development. We have previously shown that multiple Bmp mutants are sensitized to ethanol-induced facial defects. However, ethanol does not directly impact Bmp signaling. This suggests that downstream effectors, like nkx2.3 and Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf) signaling, may mediate the impact of ethanol on Bmp mutants. Here, I …

Human Salivary Gland Stem/Progenitor Cells For Tissue Engineering, Sars-Cov-2 Susceptibility, And Neurointegration, Caitlynn Barrows
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Salivary glands and the saliva they secrete are important for digestion, chewing, and maintaining oral health. Reduced saliva production leads to a decreased quality of life for patients experiencing hyposalivation as a result of disease or injury, thus a large effort has been dedicated to developing materials and medium to recapitulate the structure of the gland for regenerative medicine. In doing so, we have come closer to developing a more complex model to study disease. These models, however, do not yet fully recapitulate the gland. In this dissertation, we describe a new cell source that can be used to develop …

Integrating Bulk And Single-Cell Transcriptomics To Investigate Intratumor Heterogeneity, Shuai Guo
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cancers are heterogeneous mixtures of tumor and surrounding cells, where each component comprises multiple distinct sub-types and/or states. Understanding the cell-type-specific contributions is critical for advancing cancer biology, yet high-throughput expression profiles from tumor tissues only represent combined signals from all diverse cellular sources. Bulk deconvolution with single-cell/nucleus (sc/sn) RNA-seq data has emerged as a powerful approach to dissect both cellular composition and cell-type-specific expression patterns, yet the technological discrepancy across sequencing platforms limits accuracy.
To systematically evaluate the impact of platform discrepancies on bulk deconvolution, we first generated a benchmark dataset of 24 healthy retinas with paired bulk and …
Clonal Phenotype Mapping Reveals Genomic Alterations Underlying Tumor Immunosuppression During Immunotherapy, Er-Yen Yen
Clonal Phenotype Mapping Reveals Genomic Alterations Underlying Tumor Immunosuppression During Immunotherapy, Er-Yen Yen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Tumors are dynamic ecosystems that evolve under selective pressures, shaping their ability to either elicit or evade immune responses. In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), where immunotherapy has yet to become an effective treatment option, we investigated the role of intratumoral heterogeneity in influencing immune interactions. Using orthotopic clonal replica tumors, we tracked clonal dynamics in response to anti-PD1 therapy and found that while treatment had limited impact on overall tumor volume, it induced profound shifts in clonal composition. Spatial lineage analysis of treatment-naïve tumors revealed that clones with distinct immunotherapy sensitivities occupy unique tumor microenvironments, a pattern that remained stable …
