Improving Icu Decolonization Compliance Among Nursing Staff, Sarah J. Moore
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) burden patients and health care organizations by influencing extended hospital stays, increasing mortality risk, and increasing healthcare spending.
PICOT: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Project was guided by the PICOT question: In ICU nursing staff (P), how does the implementation of a standardized process with visual reminders and checklists (I) compared to no reminders or checklists (C) impact compliance with the decolonization protocol for HAI reduction (O) over four weeks?
Evidence: A review of evidence-based literature demonstrated efficacy in the reduction of HAIs through once daily bathing with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) …
The Development Of A Remediation Policy For High-Stakes Standardized Tests, Abigail R. Brundige
The Development Of A Remediation Policy For High-Stakes Standardized Tests, Abigail R. Brundige
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Standardized testing serves as a measure of academic progress and readiness for licensure in nursing programs. Gaps in standardized testing performance emphasize the need for educational support. The problem identified for this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) policy project is the lack of a formal standardized testing remediation policy within a community college nursing program in rural West Tennessee. The DNP project proposes the development and implementation of a standardized testing remediation policy to identify at-risk students early, provide individualized remediation plans, and improve program retention and licensure pass rates. The DNP project employed a quantitative design to assess the …
Barriers To Participation In Follow-Up Services In Oncology, Casey Wagman

The Emotional Well-Being Tool (EWBT), a validated psychological distress screening tool, is often used in a Midwest cancer clinic, yet it was noted that its supportive services were underutilized.
Purpose
This quality improvement project aimed to analyze the perspective of cancer patients on the EWBT, their understanding of its purpose and outcomes, and the perceived barriers to utilizing supportive services.
Methods
It was an exploratory design, …
Silicon Is The Next Frontier In Plant Synthetic Biology, Aniruddha Acharya, Kaitlin Hopkins, Tatum Simms
Silicon Is The Next Frontier In Plant Synthetic Biology, Aniruddha Acharya, Kaitlin Hopkins, Tatum Simms
Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences
Silicon has a striking similarity to carbon and is found in plant cells. However, there is no specific role that has been assigned to silicon in the life cycle of plants. The amount of silicon in plant cells is species specific and can reach levels comparable to macronutrients. Silicon is used extensively in artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and the digital revolution, and thus can serve as an informational molecule such as nucleic acids. The diverse potential of silicon to bond with different chemical species is analogous to carbon; thus, it can serve as a structural candidate similar to proteins. The discovery …

Imputation Via Domain Adaptation: Rethinking Variable Subset Forecasting From Knowledge Transfer, Runchang Liang, Qi Hao, Yue Gao, Kunpeng Liu, Lu Jiang, Pengyang Wang, Minghao Yin
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Multivariate time series forecasting in practical deployment faces a critical challenge termed Variable Subset Forecasting (VSF), where certain variables accessible during training are entirely missing during inference. This creates a stark discrepancy between the training (source domain with full variables) and inference (target domain with partial variables) environments, disrupting cross-variable dependencies and fragmenting global temporal patterns. Existing imputation methods, limited to transferring local knowledge (e.g., temporal neighbors or pairwise correlations), fail to capture essential global dynamics, leading to severe performance degradation under distribution shifts. To address these challenges, we redefine VSF as a cross-domain knowledge transfer problem and propose VIDA, …
Teaching Law Through Art: On Magic, Emotions, And Resistance, Hamsini Marada
Teaching Law Through Art: On Magic, Emotions, And Resistance, Hamsini Marada
Socio-Legal Review
This is an auto-ethnographic article in which the author reflects on her research in art and law, the legal academic culture, and the ways in which her art practice (painting and photography) informs her teaching pedagogy. The author uses theoretical works of scholars like Paulo Friere and bell hooks as foundational texts to address how an emotional and care-based approach to teaching can be developed through engagement with art in law classrooms. This theory is substantiated with anecdotes from the author's experience of teaching electives on art and law and core courses like Criminal Law and Intellectual Property Rights. By …

Magnet Council Toolkit For Organizations Seeking Magnet Status And Recruitment, Andrew J. Boone
Magnet Council Toolkit For Organizations Seeking Magnet Status And Recruitment, Andrew J. Boone
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: The problem was a lack of a standardized or structured process for the development of Magnet Councils. There is no clear pathway or materials to initiate the process, and one must start by applying to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) with little guidance prior to seeking help on the Magnet Journey. PICO Question: The PICO question that guided this DNP Project Toolkit development was as follows: For healthcare organizations pursuing Magnet status (P), how does the development of a structured Magnet Council Toolkit (I) compared to the absence of a formal toolkit (C), contribute to the validation …

Sos (Save Our Skin)- A Hospital Acquired Pressure Injury Reduction Quality, Nicholas A. La Mar
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are a significant source of preventable harm. Often associated with increased patient morbidity, reduced quality of life, and substantial financial costs. In 2023, a Northern California level II trauma center reported 44 HAPI cases, with 25% occurring in the telemetry units. Despite a hospital-wide reduction in HAPIs in 2024, telemetry units accounted for 33% of the cases in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting a need for targeted intervention.
Context: The project was conducted in four adult inpatient telemetry units of a 241-bed level two trauma center. The units faced challenges with inconsistent adherence to …
Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien
Fostering Academic, Social-Emotional, And Civic Growth Through Discussion-Based Pedagogy In Secondary Classrooms, Ethan O'Brien
Masters Projects
Discussion-based pedagogy provides students with opportunities to practice collaborative and critical thinking skills that have proven impactful on reading and writing scores, interpersonal communication skills, and civic engagement. However, inexperienced discussion facilitators—as well as instructors who may not have clear purposes or objectives for discussion in their classrooms—may not be familiar with best practices and strategies for structuring rigorous, equitable, and engaging student talk. This project begins by investigating potential factors contributing to students' lack of interpersonal skills in the classroom, and ultimately identifies discussion-based pedagogy as a key solution. A theoretical basis for the merits of discursive learning is …

Partial cystectomy is a surgical bladder-sparing option for selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), urachal adenocarcinoma and diverticular bladder tumors. Partial cystectomy hold several advantages. It allows for definite pathology and accurate staging while avoiding side effects from radiation therapy and preserves the option for salvage radical therapy (radical cystectomy or radical radiotherapy). Patients should have a CT urogram, prostatic urethral biopsy and mapping biopsies or blue light cystoscopy to rule out multifocal disease or CIS. Small solitary MIBC patients without carcinoma in situ in an area of the bladder where resection can be performed with negative margin would …

The cornea, the transparent anterior window of the eye, critically refracts light and protects intraocular structures. Corneal pathologies, including trauma, infection, chemical injury, metabolic diseases, genetic conditions, and age-related degeneration, can lead to significant visual impairment. While penetrating keratoplasty or full-thickness corneal transplantation remains a standard and effective intervention for severe corneal dysfunction, limitations in donor tissue availability and the risk of immunogenic graft rejection necessitate alternative therapeutic strategies. Furthermore, for cases of isolated epithelial disfunction, a full-thickness cornea graft may not be required or effective. This review examines the potential of corneal epithelial constructs derived from autologous stem cells …

Transgressive Body, Open Mind, And Perceptive Spirit For Nurturing Soul: A Reflection On Teaching To Transgress, Akie F. Wenk
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
In this reflection essay, I discuss my journey into the liberatory pedagogy bell hooks champions. As a foreign-born Japanese woman, who speaks English as her second language, being in the classroom itself can be seen as a transgressive act. Positioning myself as an educator who strives to creates an environment that is liberatory for me and my students, I discuss my specific experience and relationship to theories surrounding critical feminist pedagogy and how I practice these theories in my own classroom.
