Code Reuse In Cubesat Projects: Analyzing The Adoption Of Open-Source Software From The Birds Program, Husseinat Etti-Balogun, Victor Schulz, Mengu Cho

Small Satellite Conference

Code reuse is a fundamental principle in software engineering, streamlining development processes and reducing costs. In the context of CubeSat development, open-source software frameworks, such as the Open-Source BIRDS CubeSat (OSBC) software, have the potential to enhance collaboration and accelerate mission deployment. However, the ex- tent to which CubeSat teams adopt and adapt these existing software solutions remains underexplored.

This study examines six CubeSat missions derived from the BIRDS satellite bus, assessing their software development strategies and the degree of code reuse from OSBC. By analyzing project documentation, source code repositories, and developer interviews, we investigate key factors influencing software …

Cots Implementation Of Magnetorquer-Only Cubesat Spin Stabilization, Joshua Umansky-Castro, Deemo Chen, Om Deshmukh, Haonan Gong, Nicholas Natsoulas, Mason Peck, Andrew Filo, Alex Burke

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents the implementation of CubeSat attitude control algorithms on commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware. Cornell’s Alpha CubeSat seeks to spin-stabilize using only magnetorquer outputs and IMU inputs. Extensive software development and testing is carried out to overcome these hardware limitations. This paper shares tools, techniques, and niche considerations when bringing the control algorithm from simulation to hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing with embedded flight software. In-depth approaches for magnetometer filtering are discussed, along with software implementation decisions for safe mission operations.

Developing A Model-Based Systems Engineering Methodology For Academic Cubesat Missions, Piper L. Kline Aug 2025

Developing A Model-Based Systems Engineering Methodology For Academic Cubesat Missions, Piper L. Kline

Small Satellite Conference

Cube Satellites (CubeSats) have become increasingly popular, particularly in academic settings, due to their affordability, rapid development timelines, and utility as platforms for student training and experimental payloads. Despite these advantages, CubeSat development presents several challenges, including limited resources such as personnel, funding, and time, as well as difficulties in maintaining comprehensive documentation and managing requirements. Student-led projects face additional obstacles, such as inexperienced team members and high turnover rates, which can result in inadequate passing of knowledge. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a promising approach to address these challenges and improve the efficiency of CubeSat design and …

Finch Eye: The Optical And Optomechanical Design Of A Grism-Based Swir Hyperspectral Imaging Payload For A 3u Cubesat, Iliya Shofman, Mario Ghio Neto, Theaswanth Ganesh, Kenya He, Aidan Armstrong, Ksenya Narkevich

Small Satellite Conference

Crop residue is an important metric used for agricultural land-use monitoring and climate science research. Estimating crop residue coverage is essential to sustainable agricultural practices. There already exist scientific hyperspectral satellites, such as PRISMA and EnMAP, that can be used for crop residue estimation; however, they are very expensive to build and cannot be monopolized by individual farms. This leaves a gap in satellite remote sensing solutions which can be deployed operationally and at the farm scale. We seek to fill this gap by developing a low-cost satellite solution for crop residue estimation. The University of Toronto Aerospace Team is …

Design Of A Multi-Orbit Smallsat Constellation With Edge Computing For Space Weather Monitoring And Operational Forecasting, Saranya Ravva, Sai Kiran Parre, Abeneth Ramachandran, Yukti Makkar

Small Satellite Conference

Space weather events in the 100–600 km thermosphere-ionosphere and magnetosphere impact satellites, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), aviation, and power grids[1]. Current monitoring can be updated with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution and global coverage to meet World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards, especially where solar activity accelerates orbital decay and radiation risks. This poster proposes addressing this with a hybrid constellation of 24 SmallSats employing advanced edge computing and multi-orbit observation, targeting operational readiness by 2032.

Detumbling Analysis And Attitude Stabilization Of Spicesat: A Closed-Loop Control Verification Framework, Spencer Talish, Francesca Fusco

Small Satellite Conference

This study investigates the detumbling capabilities of SPICEsat following an initial angular disturbance imparted by the deployer. SPICEsat, which stands for Sloshing Platform for In Orbit Controller Experimentation, is a 6U CubeSat developed by Rutgers University to investigate the effects of fuel sloshing on spacecraft stability and control. Top level, this research’s objective is to confirm SPICEsat's ability to reduce angular momentum, thereby achieving a stabilized post-deployment attitude. This is referred to as detumbling, or the process of reducing a satellite’s rotational rates following deployment. The system-level focus centers on assessing the control authority of the Blue Canyon Technologies (BCT) …

Small Satellite Conference

Sailing to the Stars is a mission led by students at Cornell University that will use the International Space Station (ISS) to gather data related to the deployment of free-flying light sails in microgravity. As this light sail architecture is relatively new, additional information on how the sail deploys and the optimal deployment system is desired. This information is relevant for guiding the design of future missions that use this technology. For this experiment, astronauts shall deploy six light sails from two different CubeSat-scale deployer designs within the ISS. Video footage and IMU data will be recorded throughout the experiment, …

Toward Trusted Onboard Ai: Advancing Small Satellite Operations Using Reinforcement Learning, Cannon Whitney, Joseph Melville

Small Satellite Conference

A Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm was developed for command automation onboard a 3U CubeSat. This effort focused on the implementation of macro Control Action Reinforcement Learning (CARL), a technique in which an onboard agent is provided with compiled information based on live telemetry as its observation. The agent uses this information to produce high-level actions, such as adjusting attitude to solar pointing, which are then translated into control algorithms and executed through lower-level instructions. Once trust in the onboard agent is established, real-time environmental information can be leveraged for faster response times and reduced reliance on ground control. The approach …

Enhanced Navigation Using Wireless Beacons In Infrastructure, Qi Jiang, Danqing Fu

Defensive Publications Series

To address the limitations of conventional navigation systems in dynamic environments, this disclosure presents a system for improving location accuracy and providing real-time data to users. This disclosure describes equipping public infrastructure, such as traffic lights, pedestrian crosswalks, railroad crossings, and other roadside units (RSUs), with low-cost wireless beacons or local transmitters (e.g., Bluetooth, Ultra-Wideband, RFID, etc.). These transmitters continuously broadcast or advertise valuable information, like traffic signal timing, status updates, or precise location data. A user's computing device—which could be a smartphone, wearable, or an in-vehicle system within a connected or autonomous vehicle—may then receive these signals as it …

Indigenous Business & Public Administration

The concept of and desire for well-being economies are rising in prevalence as traditional business paradigms are questioned and alternative framings are being sought. Indigenous peoples, their economies, and their approach to business can provide a rich source of learning to enable and help facilitate a transition to economies of well-being. As Indigenous peoples are emerging from their colonial pasts, they are becoming more empowered to make investment choices, use business models, and form partnerships grounded in their worldviews, which are often well aligned with a well-being economy.

In this paper, we note some of the obstacles Indigenous economies have …

Between Shelter & Ash: A Design Policy Atlas For Wildfire-Resiliency, Daisy Elizabeth Morales-Zaragoza Aug 2025

Between Shelter & Ash: A Design Policy Atlas For Wildfire-Resiliency, Daisy Elizabeth Morales-Zaragoza

McNair Summer Research Program

Architectural design holds a powerful potential in the face of wildfire threats, yet remains underutilized in fire resilience strategies. This study will explore how design, at the level of the house, street, and community, can move beyond code compliance toward holistic protection. Through analysis of principal fire codes such as IWUIC, CBC Chapter 7A, and NFPA 1144, visual diagrams, precedent case studies, and original architecture proposals, the paper proposes a multiscale design framework that expands our understanding of resilience. It argues that while fire codes establish critical baselines, spatial planning, form, and materials must work in concert with social and …

Purpose Even after the lifting of all government restrictions, introduced to combat the spread of Covid-19, many consumers remain fearful of in-person dining. This paper seeks to understand this reticence, and explain post-pandemic restaurant dining intentions. Design/methodology/approach The paper introduces and tests a conceptual framework for understanding in-person dining intentions in the post-Covid-19 era, utilizing structural equation modelling. To empirically validate the model, survey data collection (n = 436) occurred in China after the government lifted its “Zero-Covid” policy. Findings Neuroticism, as a personality trait, negatively affects restaurant trust and increases fear of Covid-19 (threat appraisal), which in turn reduces …

Caught In The Crossfire: Navigating Institutional Neutrality Amidst Campus Controversy & Competing Demands, Jamie Herman, Sally Moore Aug 2025

Caught In The Crossfire: Navigating Institutional Neutrality Amidst Campus Controversy & Competing Demands, Jamie Herman, Sally Moore

Prindle Faculty and Staff Publications

When controversies arise, colleges and universities often find themselves in the crossfire of heated debates over institutional neutrality. Some institutions claim neutrality to distance themselves from controversy and defuse tensions surrounding sensitive issues. However, when institutions choose not to engage—whether through nonresponse or by stating they will make no response—they may inadvertently suggest that their current position is neutral, a premise many dispute (A. Ford, 2024). How should higher education institutions (HEIs) navigate the various demands they face to either act or maintain neutrality? Moreover, once institutional leaders understand these competing pressures, how should they respond? This paper has two …

Bank Stocks And Roosevelt’S Bank Holiday, Marc Weidenmier, Angela Vossmeyer, Nathan Stella, Oncel Aldanmaz Aug 2025

Bank Stocks And Roosevelt’S Bank Holiday, Marc Weidenmier, Angela Vossmeyer, Nathan Stella, Oncel Aldanmaz

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Roosevelt’s Bank Holiday in March 1933 aimed to halt bank runs and implement licensing for banks. Using a new hand-collected daily database, we examine how bank stocks and bond markets responded to this sweeping regulation. We find that New York City banks saw significant negative abnormal returns, while Chicago banks experienced positive returns, highlighting regional differences in perceptions of the policy. Corporate bond yields fell by 1.4 percentage points, lowering interest rates. Our findings show how markets reacted differently across regions and asset classes to this critical intervention.

Epitaxial Electrodeposition Of Cu-Btc Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films Onto The (100), (110), And (111) Surfaces Of Single-Crystal Gold And Cuprous Oxide Buffer Layers, Xiaoting Zhang, John Z. Tubbesing, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have well-defined pore structures. Epitaxial MOFs can produce films with uniform pore sizes and open porosity. However, the growth of epitaxial MOF thin films has remained a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a cathodic electrodeposition method for the epitaxial growth of a well-known MOF material, copper (II)-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC), from solution precursors. The epitaxial electrodeposition of Cu-BTC was achieved in a Cu (NO3)2-H3BTC-H2O2 bath using H2O2 reduction to deprotonate the H3BTC molecule. The Cu-BTC films can be grown to micrometer thicknesses with Faradaic efficiencies up …
