Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The recent upsurge in environmental awareness provokes the widespread usage of green materials in sustainable electronic applications. Herein, the effects of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) on natural rubber (NR)-based resistive switching (RS) memory are systematically investigated. This study presents the fabrication of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure using NR incorporated with SCGs (0 to 8 wt.%) as a memristive layer and sandwiched between electrodes. A significant improvement in the ON/OFF ratio from 104 for pure NR to 107, read memory window increased from 2.03 to 2.45 V with improved stability even after 130 cycles of switching is achieved …

BACKGROUND: Sonographic cervical length is a powerful predictor of maternal risk for spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB). Twin and family studies have established a maternal genetic heritability for sPTB ranging from 13 to 20%, however, there is no corresponding estimate for the heritability of mid-trimester cervical length, or an understanding of how genetic factors contribute to cervical changes across pregnancy.
METHODS: This study was based on a prospective longitudinal cohort of (N = 5,160) Black/African American women who underwent serial sonographic examination of the uterine cervix during pregnancy and were genotyped via next-generation low-pass whole genome sequencing.
RESULTS: Bivariate genetic correlations …

A Reconstruction Of Late Pleistocene And Holocene Paleoclimate Record Using Radiocarbon Dating And Noble Gas Thermometry Of Groundwater In Shelby County, Tennessee, Megan Marie Purvis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Paleoclimate proxies, including groundwater, tree rings, ice, deep-sea sediments, and speleothems, have identified climate changes of various magnitudes throughout Earth’s history. Previous research has utilized noble gas temperatures and radiocarbon (14C) dating of groundwater to understand prehistoric climate, and the groundwater under Shelby County, Tennessee, is ideal for obtaining high-precision paleoclimate data for the south-central region of North America. This research derived groundwater recharge temperatures ranging from Pleistocene and Holocene ages utilizing available noble gas data modeled with the program PANGA. The program estimated paleotemperatures using inverse modeling with the unfractionated excess air (UA) and closed-system equilibration (CE) model. The …

Maya Migrants And Psychotherapy: Recommendations And A Case Study From Comunidad Sol In Canton, Ohio, Robin Chancer, Gerónimo Ramírez, Ernesto Ajanel Calel, María Ixcoy Mejía
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
This article approaches the question: How can non-Indigenous mental health practitioners work appropriately with Maya K’iche’ and Ixil communities in the United States? The authors are three Maya leaders and one non-Indigenous psychotherapist, the four of whom have worked together for several years. Psychological treatment rooted in Euro-American paradigms can be minimally helpful—if not harmful—to many Indigenous communities (Dudgeon & Bray, 2016). Traditional approaches such as cognitive-behavior therapy continue the colonial preoccupation with individual pathology and the separation of mind, body, spirit, and nature. The authors suggest that more appropriate approaches would include acknowledging structural oppression and centering the K’iche’ …

The Appellate Division, First Department, remanded this class action for trial to determine if the landlord engaged in a fraudulent scheme to deregulate apartments while receiving J-51 tax credits. The court applied the "totality of the circumstances" standard, which superseded the stricter common-law fraud standard, and held that tenants must prove the landlord "knowingly engaged" in the fraudulent scheme. The decision found no impermissible retroactive effect in applying the new standard and affirmed that managing agents can be held liable for their participation in a fraudulent scheme. The court denied the tenant's summary judgment motion and modified the lower court's …

From Anorthosite To Silicic Volcanics: Photometry, Composition, And Buoyancy Of Crustal Rock Types On The Moon, Emily Margaret Culley
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
To better constrain the formation and evolution of the lunar crust, this dissertation addresses two key aspects of lunar crustal formation: the primary feldspathic crust, formed during solidification of an ancient lunar magma ocean (LMO), and non-mare silicic volcanic constructs, which represent either secondary or tertiary crustal formation processes. Specifically, we performed photometry on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) images to determine the single-scattering albedo (SSA) of surface features that expose these two non-mare crustal rock types. Using digital terrain models (DTMs) derived from LROC NAC images of each analysis region, we accounted for potential topographic …
Improving Particle-Phase Nitrate Measurement In Pm2.5 Filter Sampling: Evaluation Of A Denuder–Nylon Filter Modification In The Spartan Network, Wenyu Liu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Accurate measurement of PM2.5 composition is of global importance. Evaporation-induced mass loss introduces potential bias in filter-based PM2.5 measurements, with ammonium nitrate volatilization from Teflon filters being a major contributor to negative mass artifacts. Previous studies have demonstrated that using an acid gas denuder in combination with nylon filters can help recover the nitrate mass. This study evaluates design modifications to the AirPhoton sampling station setup within the globally distributed Surface Particulate Matter Network (SPARTAN) incorporating an additional acid gas denuder upstream and a nylon filter downstream of the existing Teflon filter.
Two co-located AirPhoton Sampling stations were …

While scientific research has extensively explored how the brain integrates touch and pain signals, the cerebral processing of specific vibrotactile frequencies remains poorly understood. This gap is particularly significant given clinical evidence that vibrotactile stimulation can reduce pain in both chronic pain patients and experimental settings. Our study investigated the cortical electrophysiological correlates of peripheral vibrotactile stimulation across different frequencies in healthy volunteers, with a focus on frequency-dependent patterns of neuronal activation. While electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded, healthy participants received vibrotactile stimulation (high-frequency burst stimulation with different inter-burst intervals) to the left index fingertip at frequencies corresponding to established neural …

Post-Fire Succession In An Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Forest, Mojgan Mahdizadeh, Will Russell
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In 2020, a high-intensity wildfire burned over 35,000 ha in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, including over 1700 ha of old-growth coast redwood forest. This event created a unique opportunity to evaluate post-fire succession. We compared vegetation recovery in high versus low/moderate severity burned areas using data collected one year and four years following the fire. Random plot sampling was conducted at Big Basin Redwoods State Park to assess the regeneration of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous species. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were used to assess recovery over time and across burn severities. Results indicate significant increases in shrub …

Genetic Deletion Of The Sodium Phosphate Cotransporter Napi2a Ameliorates Heart Failure In Mice, Hiroko Yamauchi-Sawada, Benjamin D Humphreys, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Apical membrane sodium transporters in renal proximal tubules, such as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2, are attractive therapeutic targets for the treatment of heart failure (HF). Sodium-phosphate co-transporter 2a (NaPi2a) is predominantly expressed in the apical membrane of proximal tubular epithelia and functions to reabsorb filtered phosphate and sodium. It currently remains unclear whether the inhibition of NaPi2a attenuates HF. We found that NaPi2a deficiency improved the cardiac phenotypes of the HF models of transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and doxorubicin (Dox) cardiotoxicity. Natriuretic and phosphaturetic effects were observed in NaPi2a-KO mice under normal conditions, resulting in low serum phosphate and fibroblast growth …

Diffuse mesothelioma (DM) is a rare but highly aggressive and treatment resistant neoplasm with low survival rates. Effective therapeutic strategies are limited, and resistance to treatment is a major obstacle. Myeloid Cell Leukemia (MCL)-1 and B-cell leukemia (BCL)-xL are anti-apoptotic B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family proteins that block cell-intrinsic apoptosis through interactions on the mitochondrial outer membrane which contribute to therapeutic resistance.
We investigated whether B-cell homology domain (BH)-3 profiles were consistent between intra-patient fresh tumor sample, patient-derived cells (PDC), and patient-derived xenografts (PDX) by BH3 profiling; we observed striking consistency which enabled cross model comparisons. Next, we co-targeted BCL-xl …

Insufficient eradication of cancer cells and survival of drug tolerant clones are major relapse driving forces. Underlying molecular mechanisms comprise activated prosurvival and antiapoptotic signaling, leading to insufficient apoptosis and drug resistance. The identification of programmed cell death pathways alternative to apoptosis opens up possibilities to antagonize apoptosis escape routes. We have earlier shown that acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) harbors a distinct propensity to undergo cell death by receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1)-dependent necroptosis, activated by small-molecule second mitochondria-derived activators of caspase (SMAC) mimetics. Despite demonstrated safety and tolerability of SMAC mimetics in clinical trials, their efficacy as single agent …

Steatotic liver disease (SLD), which is associated with increased risk of cancer-related mortality, needs timely and cost-effective detection. Although liver biopsy remains the diagnostic gold standard, its invasiveness and high-cost limit widespread use. Ultrasound is a practical and affordable alternative. We evaluated inter- and intra-observer agreement for ultrasound-based diagnosis of SLD using images from the Chile Biliary Longitudinal Study (Chile BiLS), a cohort of women with gallstones. These women have a high burden of obesity and related metabolic disorders, putting them at higher risk for SLD. A radiologist (observer 1) reviewed a randomly selected subset of 425 baseline images and …

Target engagement assays are essential for drug discovery, utilizing Time-Resolved Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (TR-FRET) and Nano Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer (NanoBRET) as complementary methods for biochemical and cellular evaluation. Traditional platforms require distinct fluorescent tracers, increasing costs and complexity. This study systematically evaluates the cross-platform performance of T2-BODIPY-FL and T2-BODIPY-589, tracers developed for receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) target engagement in TR-FRET and NanoBRET applications, respectively. Our results demonstrate both tracers effectively bridge biochemical and cellular assays, providing reliable measurements. T2-BODIPY-589 demonstrates superior performance in NanoBRET (Z’ up to 0.80) and acceptable functionality in TR-FRET (Z’=0.53). Conversely, T2-BODIPY-FL performs …

The transition from acute kidney injury to chronic kidney disease is characterized by significant changes in the cellular composition and molecular interactions within the kidney. Utilizing high-resolution Xenium and whole transcriptome Visium spatial transcriptomics platforms, we analyze over a million cells on 12 male mouse kidneys across six stages of renal injury and repair. We define and validate 20 major kidney cell populations and delineate distinct cellular neighborhoods through this multimodal spatial analysis. We further reveal a specific fibro-inflammatory niche enriched in failed-repair proximal tubule cells, fibroblasts, and immune cells, with conserved neighborhood gene signatures across mouse and human. We introduce the NASA-funded mission STARI (STarlight Acquisition and Reflection toward Interferometry). We plan to demonstrate the first transfer of starlight between two separate spacecraft, a key technology step towards long-baseline interferometry. Consisting of two propulsive 6U CubeSats flying in Low Earth Orbit separated by ∼100 meters, STARI will reflect a small beam of starlight from the Chief spacecraft toward the Deputy spacecraft, where the light will be collected by an off-axis parabola and focused into a single-mode fiber. With the use of differential Global Positioning System (GPS), visual LED beacons and fast-steering-mirrors (FSMs), we aim for continuous high-throughput fiber …

The commonplace practice of manually scheduling communications is challenged by complex and often unpredictable data needs of modern spacecraft. Automation has clear benefits to improve timeliness and efficiency of space communications. In this work we describe and experimentally demonstrate a suite of software which automates the process of scheduling contacts for satellite communications. Service is scheduled based on a spacecraft’s needs and contacts execute automatically without a human in the loop. Requests for service originate onboard the spacecraft, traverse a low-rate control channel to reach a terrestrial server, and are fulfilled by ground station assets. This work describes an experiment …

In recent decades, the Patent and Trademark Office and the federal courts have dramatically expanded the scope of patentable subject matter—the set of inventions eligible for patent protection. Existing scholarship has taken a narrow view of this expansion. Scholars argue on efficiency grounds that without more meaningful limits on the scope of patentable subject matter, future invention will be impeded rather than encouraged. This Article takes a broader view of the subject matter inquiry, tracing its historical development and its changing theories of technology, from the patent system’s inception to the present. This Article demonstrates that through these theories of …

The Mars Exploration Program (MEP) 2024-2044 Plan [1] charts a new path for the next two decades of science-driven missions. An underpinning of the MEP 2024-2044 Plan is the ability to have a high cadence of missions leveraging frequent, low-cost access and at-Mars infrastructure. Current rapid maturation of affordable Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and lunar industry capabilities point towards near-term Mars adaptation. Towards understanding Mars adaptations, cost, and needed government investment, MEP competitively solicited and conducted 12 studies across four major classes of potential missions with 9 companies in 2024. Additionally, MEP sought to understand if there is sufficient maturity …

Small spacecraft technology advancements have transformed the way NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) strategically executes science investigations. In support of this new approach, SMD established the Rideshare Office in 2020 to implement and define the SMD-wide rideshare strategy. The objective of the office is to maximize science, exploration, and technology return on investment by enabling rideshare or accommodation opportunities for small spacecraft on SMD primary mission launches, and VADR launch procurements which are managed by the NASA Launch Services Program (LSP). The SRO also enables opportunities for NASA small sats on other government agency and international space agency partner launches. …

Northrop Grumman and Firefly Aerospace are moving rapidly to mitigate a bottleneck in launch capacity in the medium lift segment and increase launch site diversification for government and commercial satellite customers. With existing heavy-lift vehicles often booked to capacity and small-lift vehicles limited by their mass to orbit, medium-lift vehicles provide an ideal solution for affordably delivering medium payloads to LEO and beyond.
Positioned between small-lift and heavy-lift rockets, the new Eclipse™ Medium Launch Vehicle (MLV) (Figure 1) will add significant payload mass to orbit and volume beyond the capacity of the existing Northrop Grumman Antares 230+ launch vehicle. The …

Cost estimation is a key element in the planning and execution of CubeSat mission, as it helps ensure that resources are used efficiently and that mission objectives remain aligned with technical and operational constraints. A solid technical baseline - one that clearly describes the system’s characteristics - is essential for developing reliable cost estimates and for establishing a shared understanding of the project among stakeholders. This paper presents the cost estimation process used at the ITA Space Center for CubeSat platforms. The method follows a structured, eight-step approach adapted from NASA and ESA standards. The steps begin with receiving the …
