Traditional points-based grading can have negative impacts. As a result, many educators are experimenting with alternative grading practices that are more equitable for students. However, educators often face challenges in implementing equitable grading practices due to a lack of clear, practical descriptions of techniques and the fact that not all techniques are universally applicable. This working group addresses this problem using a three-pronged strategy: conducting a systematic literature review to gather documented techniques, compiling ''recipes'' or concrete descriptions of these techniques, and publishing them in an open-source, online ''playbook'' of equitable grading practices as a community resource for educators. This …

Evaluating Updated Fentanyl Immunoassays For Loperamide Interference, Michael E. Walsh, Grace R. Williams, Paul J. Jannetto, K. Aaron Geno
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background
Loperamide is a µ-opioid receptor agonist that reduces intestinal peristalsis and is used to treat diarrhea. We previously described significant cross-reactivity of loperamide with 2 fentanyl immunoassays. Since then, new fentanyl immunoassays, including a CLIA-waived point-of-care device, have been approved for clinical use. Methods
We evaluated new fentanyl immunoassays for cross-reactivity to loperamide and its major metabolites, N-desmethyl loperamide (dLop) and N-didesmethyl loperamide (ddLop). Previously characterized assays were tested for cross-reactivity to ddLop, which recently became commercially available. Loperamide, dLop, and ddLop were spiked in drug-free urine for analysis by 5 enzyme immunoassays run on automated chemistry analyzers and …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has historically been avoided in oncological patients due to perceived risks. However, recent literature suggests improved survival rates for pediatric oncology patients. Additionally, necrotizing fasciitis from Clostridium septicum is associated with high morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with preexisting malignancies. Few studies have explored the outcomes of ECMO in patients with both necrotizing fasciitis and hematologic malignancies. We present a case of a 16-year-old male with pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and Clostridium septicum necrotizing fasciitis successfully supported with veno-arterial (VA) ECMO. The patient underwent induction chemotherapy for ALL but developed severe septic shock …

Cryptic habitats on coral reefs consist of crevices, tunnels, and holes that are estimated to comprise 30%–75% of the total reef surface area. These large habitats are vastly understudied because they are often difficult to access. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are thought to perform important ecological functions, including calcium accretion, both inside cryptic habitats and on the exposed (top) reef. Using GoPro cameras, we surveyed 250 coral crevices from 13 reefs on West Maui, Hawai‘i. We compared relative CCA cover between crevice microhabitats and the well-studied top-reef and identified abiotic and biotic factors that correlated with CCA abundance. We found …

Signaling dynamics are crucial in biological systems, and biosensor-based real-time imaging has revolutionized their analysis. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) excels over the widely used fluorescence intensity imaging by allowing the measurement of absolute signal levels independent of sensor concentration. This capability enables the comparison of signaling dynamics across different animals, body regions, and timeframes. However, FLIM's advantage can be compromised by factors like autofluorescence in biological experiments. To address this, we introduce FLiSimBA, a flexible computational framework for realistic

Higher education has an imperative responsibility to engage students ethically and develop their character. I offer a teaching metaphor and case study to meaningfully develop students’ self-awareness of character via an undergraduate leadership course. I employed the ‘seed’ metaphor to illustrate how nurturing students’ self-awareness and agency mirrors the growth of a seed within a carefully cultivated ecosystem. Each contemplative practice (character development) intertwined with leadership content (competence and confidence), serves as essential nourishment, …
