An Educational Intervention Focused On Identifying Adverse Childhood Experiences, Laconia Bacon
An Educational Intervention Focused On Identifying Adverse Childhood Experiences, Laconia Bacon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to traumatic childhood experiences that individuals may have been exposed to during their youth, such as child maltreatment, domestic violence, or interparental violence. Research has demonstrated that experiencing ACEs in childhood may result in physical and mental illnesses that led to dangerous lifestyle patterns in adulthood. In the local organization, several patients with ACEs presented in the emergency department (ED). The nurses, unaware of ACEs, were unable to detect and respond to the consequences of ACEs. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine whether an educational intervention focused …
Strategies For Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment And Retention, Teddy Gene Abbey
Strategies For Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment And Retention, Teddy Gene Abbey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Volunteer fire departments (VFDs) provide essential services in rural areas that cannot afford full-time staff, and they are negatively impacted by declining recruitment and retention. VFD administrators who lack strategies to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters risk reduced emergency services and increased costs for hiring paid firefighters. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry project was to identify and explore strategies some VFD administrators use to recruit and retain members and maintain necessary emergency services. Participants were six administrators from VFDs in Oklahoma and Arkansas with community populations of 1,500 citizens or fewer residents who …

A Qualitative Study On The Experiences Of Burnout Among Mental Health Practitioners Rendering Clinical Care During Covid-19, Mykiyaa Marvella Walker-Sanchez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, between 21% and 67% of mental health practitioners in the United States experienced signs of burnout. The pandemic exacerbated these challenges, with an increased demand for mental health services. By 2022, 45% of practitioners reported burnout, and the APA’s 2023 Practitioner Pulse Survey noted that psychologists were working at the limits of their capacity, with high levels of burnout. While research on COVID-19 and burnout has expanded for physicians and nurses, less focus has been placed on mental health practitioners' experiences. The purpose of this generic qualitative study aimed to understand how mental health practitioners …

From Company To Crown: The 1858 Government Of India Act In The British Press, Benjamin Cohen
From Company To Crown: The 1858 Government Of India Act In The British Press, Benjamin Cohen
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
In the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny and the perceived failures of the British East India Company, the British Parliament passed the 1858 Government of India Act, which liquidated the Company and placed India under direct rule by the Crown. The historiography on the Company’s end and the Raj’s beginning has not given adequate attention to the Act itself, portraying it as an uncontroversial measure used to change India’s governing body. This article addresses the controversial nature of the Act. By examining geographically and politically dispersed newspaper articles from when the Act was being considered in Parliament, this research shows …

Mock Battles: A Time And Place For Conflict, Benjamin Crawford
Mock Battles: A Time And Place For Conflict, Benjamin Crawford
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
Mock battles are a category of ritual widely recognized by cultural anthropologists, and yet the term as used stands as a wide umbrella covering an incredibly disparate range of human behaviors. Ethnographers have applied the label of “mock battle” both to events incorporating actual bodily harm—most famously, the Andean Tinku—and to non-violent theatrical performances such as the Moros dances popular throughout Spain and Mexico. To better understand the particular social functions of these rituals, I distinguish between two separate but interrelated “genres” of mock battle: the Civil War type, in which communities schedule limited outbursts of cathartic physical violence; and …
Exploring Infant Toy Interactions In Free Play Environments, Emma Bermudez, Jacqueline Hammack
Exploring Infant Toy Interactions In Free Play Environments, Emma Bermudez, Jacqueline Hammack
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
Infants’ interactions with toys play a crucial role in their early cognitive and motor development, yet much of the research on this topic has been conducted in controlled laboratory settings, which may not accurately reflect the diversity of toys and interactions infants experience in their natural environments. This study uniquely examined these interactions in a home setting by utilizing an online video conferencing platform. This study investigated how toy properties influence manual infant-object interactions during dyadic tabletop free play, where mothers selected the toys for the session. Within the confines of this study, results show that infants spend significantly more …

Fast Fashion: Discovering American Consumers' Opinions, Ava Vignola
Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal
The effects of fast fashion range from human rights violations to environmental devastation. This study uncovers the views of Americans on fast fashion. It was expected to find that many Americans prioritize price when shopping, due to the growth of these companies. The study had 193 people complete a questionnaire on Amazon Turk that contained 16 questions. It found that most Americans consider the price to be more important than the ethics when shopping, with there being a statistically significant difference (p < .001) in that older consumers are more likely to prioritize price. It also found that males are more likely to disagree than females with the statement that fast fashion is unethical (p < .001). This data can be used to create marketing strategies to encourage American consumers to purchase from sustainable companies.

A ventilation port maintains the humidity range within a sealed or partially sealed enclosure maintaining a level of atmospheric moisture such as a greenhouse. The port is comprised of a polymer blend film made of a hydrophilic component serving as the water-absorbing material and substrate component serving as the mechanical backbone. The film is designed to bend and open the port when the humidity within the enclosure exceeds a predetermined level outside the humidity range, allowing for the venting of excess humidity. Once the humidity falls back within the desired range, the film returns to its original state and closes …
Investigation Of A Divergent Triangle Construct For Internal Fixation Of Vertical Femoral Neck Fractures Using Experimental And Finite Element Analysis Methods, Hannah Rainey
Masters Theses
Hip fractures are a significant public health issue as they are a commonly encountered problem and have a high rate of mortality. The fracture of the femoral neck is difficult to treat due to the geometry of the proximal femur and the weight-bearing capacity that the structure must comply with. Internal fixation of the femoral neck is often accomplished with three screws inserted along the axis of the femoral neck. The optimal configuration and number of these screws is not agreed upon in the literature. The purpose of this study was to conduct a pilot investigation on the biomechanical performance …

Tradition, Critque, And The Modern Moral Lingua Franca: A Lutheran Articulation Of Human Rights Language, Christian B. Dollar
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The language of subjective, individual rights has become the primary way of speaking about the rights and wrongs of human life together. Since the end of World War II, one subset of this language—that of human rights—has achieved a global influence. The various Christian traditions of the west have, in large part, adopted this language of human rights to articulate and supplement their assorted social teachings. Yet, the adoption of human rights language has been contested by a dedicated cadre of Roman Catholic and Protestant theologians concerned about the potentially anti-Christian implications inherent in the grammar of rights. Christian rights …

In the late twentieth century, the dual role of percussionist-composer became more visible, supported by the growth of percussion ensembles, specialized university training, and musicians who embraced both performance and composition as central to their artistic identity. Bob Becker is such a musician, a world-renowned percussionist and composer notable for the fusion of North Indian classical music and Western music conventions. His chamber pieces are excellent additions to the repertoire and notable for his multicultural music aesthetic, orchestration, range of musical colors, and idiomatic writing for the performers. Moreover, Becker’s ongoing exploration of his interest in poetry has been reflected …

In Vera Institute of Justice v. Department of Justice, as in a raft of other cases involving constitutional, statutory, and regulatory challenges to the rapid mass cancellation of federal grants or grant programs, the government has deployed jurisdictional arguments in an effort to restrict the judiciary’s ability to review the legality of executive actions. Specifically, the government has attempted to confine jurisdiction over the plaintiffs’ claims to the Federal Court of Claims, which is powerless to remedy the alleged violations. The arguments by which the government would deny judicial review of the plaintiffs’ claims conflate two distinct considerations: first, …
