My arrival into this world came quickly, according to my mother, and it feels like my life has mirrored that rapid beginning. I have enjoyed a rich, varied, and stimulating life and career that have gone through several phases. I credit genetics, my family, technological advances, and many environmental factors for shaping my career. Being a virologist allowed me to be curious and creative and to make several unexpected discoveries. This has been a fun and rewarding journey, but it wasn't always easy. I am not accustomed to talking about myself, but I am happy to share some scientific achievements …

Experiences And Perspectives Of Sexual And Reproductive Health Among Women In Recovery From Opioid Use Disorder, Nicole M. Mattson, Aleigha Barry, Jessica L. Zemlak

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Women in recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD) have unmet sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs resulting in health disparities such as unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections/HIV infection compared with women without OUD. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of co-occurring multiple social-ecologic influences (individual, interpersonal, community, society) on SRH among women in recovery from OUD.

Methods

Purposive sampling was used to recruit cis-gender women aged 18–49 who self-identify as being in recovery from OUD and speak English. We conducted one 45- to 60-minute audio-recorded semistructured telephone interview with each …

Declining dissolved oxygen concentrations are documented at upper and mid ocean depths, but less is known about the deep ocean. Long time-series measurements of dissolved oxygen analyzed with Winkler titration over several decades reveal regional differences at six stations in the abyssal North Atlantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean. A significant decline in dissolved oxygen was evident at two stations in the northeast Pacific Ocean at 4000–4200 m depth (Stations PAPA and M). A similar decreasing but insignificant trend was recorded in the Arctic region of the North Atlantic Ocean (HAUSGARTEN). However, there was no significant decrease in dissolved oxygen …

Predisposed: Race, Disability, And Death Investigations, Britney Wilson

Articles & Chapters

Disability, preexisting conditions, or underlying conditions might seem like uncontroversial factors to cite when determining an individual’s cause of death. However, many death investigators have also cited these conditions in deaths caused by state violence or neglect. For example, a 2021 study found that medical examiners cited sickle cell trait, a gene mutation, as a cause or significant factor in the deaths of forty-seven Black people who died in police custody in the past twenty-five years. Sickle cell trait is a relatively common and benign trait disproportionately found in Black people in the United States. It is also distinct from …

Challenges And Opportunities In Reducing Risk Of Diabetes-Related Cardiovascular Disease: Making Every Contact Count, Michelle Clapham

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Despite recent Government initiatives to reduce rates, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes isexpected to continue rising to almost 10% of the population by 2035. Complications of type 2diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), contribute to approximately 22 000 deathsannually in England, indicating a need for population health management through preventativehealthcare. The Making Every Contact Count (MECC) initiative recommends the building ofpreventative strategies into routine primary care appointments to reduce modifiable risk factorsassociated with both type 2 diabetes and CVD. This article explores the unique opportunitiesgeneral practice nurses have to promote primary and secondary prevention of CVD.

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Crawlers And Large Language Models In Detecting Adversarial Hidden Link Threats In Meta Computing, Junjie Xiong, Mingkui Wei, Zhuo Lu, Yao Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In the emerging field of Meta Computing, where data collection and integration are essential components, the threat of adversary hidden link attacks poses a significant challenge to web crawlers. In this paper, we investigate the influence of these attacks on data collection by web crawlers, which famously elude conventional detection techniques using large language models (LLMs). Empirically, we find some vulnerabilities in the current crawler mechanisms and large language model detection, especially in code inspection, and propose enhancements that will help mitigate these weaknesses. Our assessment of real-world web pages reveals the prevalence and impact of adversary hidden link attacks, …

School Leaders’ Perceptions Of Restorative Practices On Student Behavior, Jennifer Mary Herold Fontenot Sep 2025

School Leaders’ Perceptions Of Restorative Practices On Student Behavior, Jennifer Mary Herold Fontenot

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

United States public schools turned to a zero-tolerance approach to school discipline with hopes of improving school safety and climate in the 1990s. Administrators dispensed consequences such as suspension and expulsion without considering the whole student, regardless of the student’s conditions, motivations, or background. Many schools today focus on punitive measures rather than a holistic approach that considers the root causes of behavior, such as socioeconomic factors, mental health issues, or the student’s home life. Such actions can lead to disproportionately harsh punishments for marginalized students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds or communities of color, exacerbating existing inequalities. Thus, the …

Elevated expression of prothymosin α (ProT) is frequently observed in cancers, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we report the clinical relevance of ProT expression and its correlation with lung cancer progression. We have shown that ProT was highly expressed in early-stage lung cancer, exhibiting nuclear localization; on the contrary, a loss of nuclear ProT expression was detected in late-stage tumor specimens. Furthermore, the expression of nuclear ProT impaired lung cancer cell migration, suppressed TGF-β-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated transcription factor expression, and inhibited in vivo tumor metastasis. The suppressive effect of ProT was further found to trigger …

Dental Shame: A Call For Understanding And Addressing The Role Of Shame In Oral Health, Louise Folker, Luna Dolezal, Astrid Pernille Jespersen, Martha Paisi, Lyndsey Withers, Christina Worle, Esben Boeskov Øzhayat

Peninsula Medical School

This commentary highlights dental shame as a pervasive but underexplored phenomenon with significant implications for oral health and systemic inequities. It proposes dental shame as a critical lens for understanding and addressing the complex interplay between personal, social, economic, cultural and systemic factors contributing to oral health challenges. Drawing on interdisciplinary expertise, the authors collectively propose that dental shame is both a consequence and determinant of oral health issues, leading to a self-reinforcing dynamic of avoidance, withdrawal and exacerbated inequities. They identify five key aspects of oral health where dental shame warrants deeper investigation: clinical encounters, care and social services, …

How The Inter-Nucleon Force Shapes Emergent Collectivity And Imparts Uncertainties In Ab Initio Nuclear Observables, Kevin Becker Sep 2025

How The Inter-Nucleon Force Shapes Emergent Collectivity And Imparts Uncertainties In Ab Initio Nuclear Observables, Kevin Becker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The importance of collective motion in atomic nuclei has been well-established for many decades. Even before the advent of the nuclear shell model and its much-needed answers to surprising empirical phenomena, collectivity and surface deformation have played a vital role in broadening our knowledge. Reconciling the collective and single-particle camps into a unified description required tremendous strides in the application of group theory and advances in high-performance supercomputing, and thanks to these efforts the symmetry-adapted no-core shell model, or SA-NCSM, has developed into a reliable model for the study of deformed light and medium-mass nuclei. State-of-the-art calculations reveal remarkably simple …

Endocannabinoids Mediate Racial/Ethnic Discrimination Prediction Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Moderated By Resting-State Functional Connectivity In Black And African American Individuals, Emily A. Albertina, Lucas Torres, Garrett Sauber, Cecilia J. Hillard, Jacklynn M. Fitzgerald, Terri A. Deroon-Cassini, Christine L. Larson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Individuals from marginalized ethnoracial groups face higher risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, exacerbated by experiencing racial/ethnic discrimination. Previous work separately explored the endocannabinoid (eCB) system and functional connectivity response to stress/trauma and suggested that experiences of chronic minority stress, such as racial discrimination, contribute to eCB tone and resting-state functional connectivity. We explored how circulating eCB tone, in conjunction with resting-state connectivity, contributes to increased risk for PTSD symptoms following trauma among individuals experiencing discrimination.

Methods

Black/African Americans (n = 74; mean age = 33.81 years) were recruited from a level 1 trauma center. Correlational and …

Gw250114: Testing Hawking’S Area Law And The Kerr Nature Of Black Holes, Jaclyn (Jax) Sanders, Ligo-Virgo-Kagra (Lvk)

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The gravitational-wave signal GW250114 was observed by the two LIGO detectors with a network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 80. The signal was emitted by the coalescence of two black holes with near-equal masses 𝑚1=33.6+1.2 −0.8⁢𝑀⊙ and 𝑚2=32.2+0.8 −1.3⁢𝑀⊙, and small spins 𝜒1,2≤0.26 (90% credibility) and negligible eccentricity 𝑒⁢≤0.03. Postmerger data excluding the peak region are consistent with the dominant quadrupolar (ℓ=|𝑚|=2) mode of a Kerr black hole and its first overtone. We constrain the modes’ frequencies to ±30% of the Kerr spectrum, providing a test of the remnant’s Kerr nature. We also examine Hawking’s area law, …

A New Era Of Zines: Taking Lessons From The Past To Combat Intellectual And Political Fascism, Catherine Kane Sep 2025

A New Era Of Zines: Taking Lessons From The Past To Combat Intellectual And Political Fascism, Catherine Kane

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

Zines have long functioned as a way to circumvent the traditional gatekeepers of news, art, mainstream narratives, and publishing. They are largely non-commercial, and their emphasis is to put the means of production and distribution directly into the hands of the individual. Although their roots are in DIY, proletariat culture, they are now the subject of study in museums, libraries, and higher education, and have been co-opted by big brands, media outlets, and publishing houses—the institutions they originally sought to undermine.

In their most authentic form, zines have represented free thinking and speech, while giving individuals and communities a rallying …

Short–Range Hard–Sphere Potential And Coulomb Interaction: Deser–Trueman Formula For Rydberg States Of Exotic Atomic Systems, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura Sep 2025

Short–Range Hard–Sphere Potential And Coulomb Interaction: Deser–Trueman Formula For Rydberg States Of Exotic Atomic Systems, Gregory S. Adkins, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In exotic atomic systems with hadronic constituent particles, it is notoriously difficult to estimate the strong-interaction correction to energy levels. It is well known that, due to the strength of the nuclear interaction, the problem cannot be solved using Wigner–Brillouin perturbation theory alone. Recently, high-angular-momentum Rydberg states of exotic atomic systems with hadronic constituents have been identified as promising candidates in the search for new physics in the low-energy sector of the Standard Model. We thus derive a generalized Deser–Trueman formula for the induced energy shift for a general hydrogenic bound state with principal quantum number n and orbital angular …

Does Fintech Matter For Rigidity And Risk Aversion Among Incumbent Firms?, Kwaku Alex Gyan, Peter Galvin, Peter Adjei-Bamfo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Incumbent firms tend to seek less growth opportunities and are more risk-averse based on their core rigidities – premised on a behaviour of prioritising efficiency associated with improving existing processes. Recently, some firms have adopted FinTech to reduce core rigidity and advance their agility towards risk-taking. However, available research has not fully deconstructed FinTech's effect on the rigidity-risk relationship. We examine this observation among incumbent traditional financial services firms in Australia using both logit regression and fixed effect ordinary least squares. Our findings indicate that FinTech's impact on rigidity could be directional and counterproductive. While predictive FinTech (i.e., algorithmic routines …
