Blockchain-Powered Dynamic Segmentation In Personal Health Record, Mishall Al-Zubaidie, Wid Alaa Jebbar Sep 2025

Blockchain-Powered Dynamic Segmentation In Personal Health Record, Mishall Al-Zubaidie, Wid Alaa Jebbar

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

Sensitive patient data must be handled securely in modern oncology care to protect patient privacy, regulatory compliance, and clinical decision-making integrity. Conventional centralized healthcare systems pose serious threats to patient confidentiality and treatment continuity because of their susceptibility to data breaches, illegal access, and single points of failure. This study suggests a blockchain-based decentralized cancer healthcare security solution. The proposed system is based on the idea of layers; each layer has a distinct function that gives it a feature that sets it apart from the others. A hierarchical clustering algorithm (HCA) is used in the first layer to determine the …

Forgoing Nuclear: Nuclear Power Plant Closures And Carbon Emissions In The United States, Luke Petach

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the effect of nuclear power plant decommissioning on electricity generation and carbon emissions in the United States. Using data on nuclear reactor closures in the United States between 1993 and 2022 and data on state-level carbon emissions and electricity generation from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), this paper adopts a difference-in- differences (DiD) approach to estimate the effect of nuclear decommissioning. Two-way fixed-effects (TWFE) DiD estimates suggest a nuclear plant closure increases annual state-level per capita carbon emissions between 6% and 8%. The increase in state-level carbon emissions is driven by a substitution toward fossil fuel electricity—particularly …

Optimizing Initial Screening For Colorectal Cancer Detection With Adherence Behavior, Sarah Yini Gao, Yan He, Ruijie Zhang, Zhichao Zheng, Shao Wei Lam Lam, Emile Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Background: Two-stage screening programs are widely adopted for early colorectal cancer (CRC) detection, where individuals receiving positive outcomes in the first-stage (initial) test are recommended to undergo a second-stage test (colonoscopy) for further diagnosis. Methods: We study the initial test design—the selection of cutoffs for reporting test outcomes—to balance the trade-off between screening effectiveness (i.e., CRC and polyp detection) and efficiency (i.e., colonoscopy costs), incorporating the fact that not all individuals follow up with a colonoscopy after receiving positive outcomes. We integrate the Bayesian persuasion framework with information avoidance to model this problem and apply it to Singapore's CRC screening …

Background: Volatile pyrethroid spatial repellents (VPSRs) can prevent mosquito-borne diseases including malaria and dengue fever, but the use of varied evaluation methods has resulted in a lack of clarity regarding their protective efficacy (PE) against contact with mosquitoes. This systematic review and meta-analysis consolidates the entomological evidence base on the PE of VPSRs against Anopheles, Aedes, and Culex mosquitoes and different test methods used. Methods: We identified studies completed between January 2000 and September 2023 by searching through databases, conference abstracts, and personal correspondences. Included studies were semi-field or field studies that measured the PE of VPSRs using human landing …

Linking Core Concepts And Competencies In General Chemistry Via Gowin’S Theory Of Learning And Vee Heuristic, Vijay Vyas, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The content in introductory science courses has often been criticized as “miles wide and inches deep”. In general chemistry, several revisions have focused on framing around a set of core or anchoring concepts, and we recently adapted the anchoring concepts content map (ACCM) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to develop an anchoring concept-based curriculum for our general chemistry courses. In this article, we describe efforts to connect this curriculum with laboratory learning using Gowin’s theory of learning and the associated knowledge Vee heuristic. Within this framework, the laboratories themselves become events connecting the conceptual and methodological domains, …

Algorithmic Governance And The Boardroom: Empirical And Strategic Perspectives On Ai Integration In Corporate And Educational Oversight, James Hutson, Guarango Banerjee Sep 2025

Algorithmic Governance And The Boardroom: Empirical And Strategic Perspectives On Ai Integration In Corporate And Educational Oversight, James Hutson, Guarango Banerjee

Faculty Scholarship

The accelerating digitization of executive decision-making has prompted critical re-examination of the function and value of traditional boards of directors within corporate and educational institutions. Empirical research consistently reveals that human boards, while ostensibly tasked with strategic insight and fiduciary oversight, are frequently constrained by structural inefficiencies—such as director overcommitment, inflated compensation, and persistent conflicts of interest—that undermine organizational performance. Against this backdrop, the integration of Artificial Intelligence agents, either as analytic adjuncts or autonomous decision-makers, emerges as a plausible avenue for enhancing board effectiveness. This article synthesizes global case studies, peer-reviewed findings, and real-time technological developments to critically evaluate …

Shared decision making is where the patient and clinician come together to decide on the appropriate course of action in a patient's medical care based on their goals, preferences, and values. Typically, decision making in anesthesia remains more paternalistic, with clinicians making decisions for patients. However, there is a move towards embracing a shared decision making model. We present here a case report of using shared decision making principles to develop a pain and anxiety management plan in a patient with chronic pain and a complex mental health history. A 40-year-old female with a history of chronic pain, bipolar disorder, …

Fire smoke exposure has become a global health concern and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of understanding of the specific immune mechanisms involved in smoke exposure with preventative and targeted interventions needed. After exposure to fire smoke, which includes PM2.5, toxic metals and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), epidemiology-based studies demonstrate increases in respiratory (e.g. asthma exacerbations), cardiac (e.g. myocardial infarctions, arrhythmias), neurologic (e.g. stroke) and pregnancy-related (e.g. low birthweight, premature births) outcomes. However, mechanistic studies exploring how smoke exposure disrupts cellular homeostasis are lacking. Therefore, we collected blood from smoke-exposed individuals (n …
