Tracing Carceral Continuities: A Review Of Recent Works On The Incarcerations Of The "Bhima Koregaon-16", Saumya Dadoo, Shailza Sharma

Socio-Legal Review

This systematic review analyses three recent books that focus on the incarceration of the “BK-16”—sixteen activists who were detained in the aftermath of a 2018 gathering to celebrate the bicentenary of the Battle of Koregaon: (1) Suchitra Vijayan and Francesca Recchia’s How Long Can the Moon Be Caged (Pluto Press 2023); (2) Alpa Shah’s The Incarcerations: Bhima Koregaon and the Search for Democracy in India (Harper Collins India 2024); and (3) Sudha Bharadwaj’s From Phansi Yard: My Year with the Women of Yerawada (Juggernaut 2023). The authors argue that, read together, the three works help situate the political and legal …

Social Service Supervisors' Perceptions Of Professional Development Training, Jaida Elaine Patterson Sep 2025

Social Service Supervisors' Perceptions Of Professional Development Training, Jaida Elaine Patterson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Chafee Independent Living Skills and Goals Program (CILSGP) is a federally mandated program for public child welfare organizations that provide services to adolescents and young adults in the foster care system. The problem that was addressed through this study was that program administrators are unsure of the additional professional development (PD) needs of the social service supervisors at the study site, a foster care independent living program for youth. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate social service supervisors’ perceptions on the PD they receive; the influence the PD has on their self-concept as a learner, their …

Staff Education To Implement The Phq-9 For Depression Screening, Lydia Emuobosa Opara Sep 2025

Staff Education To Implement The Phq-9 For Depression Screening, Lydia Emuobosa Opara

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Depression is common yet frequently underdiagnosed in group home settings serving adult and geriatric residents. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to improve staff knowledge and promote routine use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a validated depression screening tool, through an evidence-based educational intervention. A practice gap was identified at the project site due to inconsistent use and documentation of the PHQ-9, primarily linked to staff knowledge deficits. The project explored whether educating staff on PHQ-9 administration, scoring, and documentation would lead to improved knowledge, as measured by pre- and post-intervention assessments. Guided by the ADDIE instructional …

First-Generation College Students' Perceptions Of Undergraduate Degree Completion, Melinda Dianna Howard Sep 2025

First-Generation College Students' Perceptions Of Undergraduate Degree Completion, Melinda Dianna Howard

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem explored in this study was the low graduation rate of first-generation college students at the university study site. Using Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore first-generation college graduates’ beliefs about their educational experience as students upon entering a bachelor’s degree program, identify obstacles, and understand ways to master those obstacles to successfully graduate. Six first-generation college graduates from the study site were recruited from FIRST, an on-campus support organization, for semistructured interviews using purposeful sampling. Due to COVID and the closing of the university study site at the time of recruitment, …

Cyclical Matters: Black Labor, Temporality, And The Incomplete Reconstructions Within African American Literature, Courtney Walton Sep 2025

Cyclical Matters: Black Labor, Temporality, And The Incomplete Reconstructions Within African American Literature, Courtney Walton

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the role literature plays in understanding black life post-reconstruction and post-civil rights movement. Specifically, I explore the continuation of injustices and mistreatment for black workers, the role black labor plays during the first and second post-reconstructions, and how literature can be used in framing this discussion. The similarities between these periods help us to better understand the cycle of racist societal expectations and the challenges black workers face integrating into society, discriminatory mandates required of black workers, the unfair job market, and forced labor. These periods interact cyclically in that the second post-reconstruction models the first post-reconstruction. …

“The Wonderful Swiftness Of The Soul”: Mental Movement And Religious Ethics In Medieval English Literature, Abigail Palmisano Sep 2025

“The Wonderful Swiftness Of The Soul”: Mental Movement And Religious Ethics In Medieval English Literature, Abigail Palmisano

Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes conceptual metaphors of psychological motion and stability in medieval English religious literature. I trace how language itself structures cultural approaches to epistemology, spiritual knowing, and virtue. Chapter One examines Alfred’s translation of Neoplatonic metaphors of psychological movement in the OE translations of The Consolation of Philosophy and Augustine’s Soliloquies. I argue that the reconfiguration of these metaphors into images of stability reveals an epistemology centered on certainty. Chapter Two compares the omission of motive psychological metaphor in Cynewulf’s Juliana and Ælfric’s “St. Agatha and St. Lucy” in process of translation. While Cynewulf’s depiction of virtue through stability …

The Invisibility Of Race In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The Gracies Versus Capoeira And Judo, Benjamin Penglase Sep 2025

The Invisibility Of Race In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The Gracies Versus Capoeira And Judo, Benjamin Penglase

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This research article examines why the racialization of Brazilian jiu-jitsu has so often been invisible to non-Brazilians. It argues that Brazilian jiu-jitsu emerged in a highly racially stratified context and looks in particular at challenge matches that the Gracie family engaged in with fighters who practiced capoeira or judo.  It argues that through these competitions, not only was Brazilian jiu-jitsu located within Brazil’s racial hierarchy, but it was often positioned as ‘white,’ though usually in an unspoken manner. The ‘invisibility’ of Brazilian jiu-jitsu’s racialization is connected to Brazil’s hegemonic racial system where race is both of central social importance, yet …

Use Of Federal Law Enforcement And Military Entities To Police U.S. Cities: A Discussion, Wilf Impact Center For Public Interest Law

WILF Impact Center for Public Interest Law | Event Posters

Monday, September 8

President Trump has said that he will deploy National Guard troops and the military to several cities, including New York City. While the Department of Justice rescinded the effort to take over Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, to date approximately 800 D.C. National Guardsmen, and 500 immigration and other federal agents have been mobilized and deployed for police operations within D.C. Does the President have the authority to seize control of local police operations? Will these actions be duplicated in New York City?

Drills Or Distress? Understanding The Psychological Effects Of Active Shooter Drills On Adolescents, Jeff R Temple, Elizabeth Baumler, Christian Paige Owen, Leila Wood

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: We sought to better understand the impact of exposure to active shooter drills (ASDs) on students' perceived stress, including those with disabilities and prior experiences with trauma.

Methods: We used data from a longitudinal study of ethnically diverse students (n = 2,033; 53.5% female) originally recruited in 2018 and followed annually thereafter. In addition to self-reporting on their perceived stress with ASDs, participants responded to questions about adverse childhood experiences, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and disability.

Results: Female students and those with a disability, probable anxiety, and suicidal ideation were more likely to be anxious after an ASD.

Conclusion: While …

Impacts Of Environmental Distractions And Interruptions On Unsupervised Digital Cognitive Assessments In Older Adults: Cognitive Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Matthew Welhaf, Hannah Wilks, Andrew J Aschenbrenner, Samhita Katteri, John C Morris, Jason J Hassenstab

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Unsupervised cognitive assessments are becoming commonly used in studies of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. As assessments are completed in everyday environments and without a proctor, there are concerns about how common distractions may impact performance and whether these distractions may differentially impact those experiencing the earliest symptoms of dementia.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the impact of self-reported interruptions, testing location, and social context during testing on remote cognitive assessments in older adults.

METHODS: Participants from the Ambulatory Research in Cognition smartphone study were classified as cognitively normal (n=380) or as having very mild dementia (n=37). Participants completed daily tests of …

Dinah Between Rape And Seduction: Maarten Van Heemskerck And Renaissance Attitudes Towards Gender And Conflict, Péter Bokody Sep 2025

Dinah Between Rape And Seduction: Maarten Van Heemskerck And Renaissance Attitudes Towards Gender And Conflict, Péter Bokody

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Marteen van Heemskerck’s Old Testament print series about Dinah, daughter of Jacob, was engraved by Herman Jansz. Muller and published by Gerard de Jode in Antwerp in 1569. In these images Heemskerck reinterprets the Old Testament narrative from a highly misogynistic standpoint, disputing the biblical claim that Shechem raped Dinah. The paper traces the sporadic representations of the episode in print and painting and examines visual strategies that emphasize male vulnerability over the suffering the female victim. Heemskerck’s artistic choices are evaluated in the context of exegetical differences between Martin Luther and John Calvin.

Microbial dysbiosis has been linked to environmental enteropathy (EE) and alterations in nutrient absorption; however, compositional modifications following exposure to supplementary nutrients are poorly understood. Here, we report the effect of amino acid and micronutrient supplementation on the gut microbiome of adults with EE. In the AMAZE trial, adults with EE were randomized to amino acids (AA) and/or micronutrients (MM) for 16 weeks in a 2 × 2 factorial design against placebo. Endoscopy was performed before and after intervention, during which duodenal aspirates were collected as well as fecal samples. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was performed on both these samples, …

Single-cell studies on breast tissue have contributed to a change in our understanding of breast epithelial diversity that has, in turn, precipitated a lack of consensus on breast cell types. The confusion surrounding this issue highlights a possible challenge for advancing breast atlas efforts. In this perspective, we present our consensus on the identities, properties, and naming conventions for breast epithelial cell types and propose goals for future atlas endeavors. Our proposals and their underlying thought processes aim to catalyze the adoption of a shared model for this tissue and to serve as guidance for other investigators facing similar challenges.

Sex-Specific Associations Between Early Life Unpredictability And Trajectories Of Body Mass Index From Infancy To Adolescence, Emily M. Melnick, Lilybelle K. Deer, Jenalee R. Doom, Hal S. Stern, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn, Elysia P. Davis Sep 2025

Sex-Specific Associations Between Early Life Unpredictability And Trajectories Of Body Mass Index From Infancy To Adolescence, Emily M. Melnick, Lilybelle K. Deer, Jenalee R. Doom, Hal S. Stern, Curt A. Sandman, Laura M. Glynn, Elysia P. Davis

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Objective:

Unpredictability in early life is an understudied aspect of early life adversity that provides important signals to the child about their environment. Recent work shows the predictability of patterns of parental signals on a moment-to-moment timescale sculpts the developing brain during sensitive windows, offering a potential pathway through which early life experiences shape child development. Both experimental non-human animal models and observational human research show sex-specific links between early life exposure to unpredictable patterns of parental sensory signals and aberrant offspring development. The impact of predictability of sensory signals on physical health outcomes, such as BMI, remains unknown. Here …

Coping Self-Efficacy, Acculturation, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Perceived Discrimination As Predictors Of Depression Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olatunde O. Osibote

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nigerian immigrants represent one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in the United States. Relocating to a new country can be a major source of stress, often increasing individuals’ vulnerability to mental health challenges. While considerable research has examined predictors of depression in the general population and among certain immigrant groups, limited attention has been given to these factors in the context of Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. This study aimed to address that gap by applying Berry’s acculturation theory to investigate predictors of depression within this population. A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational survey design was used to examine whether acculturation, socioeconomic …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Readmission following endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (EETS) for pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (PitNET) and other sellar pathology is most commonly due to delayed hyponatremia. Studies suggest postoperative fluid restriction (FR) reduces delayed hyponatremia. We present a prospective randomized controlled study evaluating post-EETS FR.

METHODS: 300 participants were scheduled for EETS (2016-2023) at a single institution. Patients with CKD, CHF, arginine vasopressin deficiency on postoperative day (POD) 3, chronic hyponatremia, and untreated adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism were excluded. Groups included control (ad-lib, n = 94), moderate FR (1.8 L/day or 2 L/day weight > 100 kg, n = 39), and strict FR …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

A non-indigenous species (NIS) of benthic foraminifera was first identified in a core collected in 1993 in San Francisco Bay, California, USA, and subsequently identified as Trochammina hadai Uchio, 1962. Archived samples and literature reviews were used to determine that the species, which is native to Asia, arrived in San Francisco Bay between the early 1960s and 1983. Through molecular analyses of specimens, archived samples and literature reviews from 1930-1983, and site surveys of harbors and estuaries along the western North American seaboard in 1994-2024, in total more than 2500 samples, we documented the presence of T. hadai at 73 …

A Scoping Review Of Epilepsy Care In Low-Resource Settings: Addressing Stigma, Healthcare Disparities, And Socioeconomic Barriers, Michael Mncedisi Willie

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

Epilepsy affects around fifty million people worldwide, with stigma and limited healthcare access posing significant challenges, especially in low-resource settings. This scoping review aimed to identify key barriers to epilepsy care, focusing on stigma, healthcare access, and socioeconomic factors in sub-Saharan Africa and similar contexts. Using the Arksey and O’Malley framework, a systematic search was conducted across online databases for peer-reviewed studies published. The review found that stigma significantly delayed diagnosis, increased social isolation, and reduced treatment adherence. Healthcare barriers included a lack of trained professionals and inadequate treatment protocols. Socioeconomic challenges, such as poverty and rural residency, were linked …

The Jokowi Effect On The Victory Of Prabowo: Do People Vote For Continuity?, Cakra Yudi Putra, Dyah Ayu Febriani, Andri Tantyo Cahyo Nugroho, Teguh Dartanto

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

The 2024 Indonesian presidential election marked a striking realignment as Prabowo Subianto—a former opposition leader—secured victory with the tacit endorsement of outgoing President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). This study investigates how the enduring popularity and policy achievements of Jokowi shaped voter preferences in favor of Prabowo, effectively positioning the election as a referendum on political continuity. Building on theories of economic voting and retrospective performance evaluation, the analysis explores the impact of district-level economic indicators, social media penetration, ideological orientation, social assistance distribution, and sociocultural characteristics on electoral outcomes. Employing Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression on data from 481 administrative regions, …
