Civilization: The Gaze Of Photography, William Alexander Ewing Sep 2025

Civilization: The Gaze Of Photography, William Alexander Ewing

Comparative Civilizations Review

If the lifetime of our species were imagined as a single 24-hour day, then civilization makes its appearance at the 23.02 mark. And photography? It comes on stage under a minute before midnight.

How marvelous it would have been to have had photography recording our lives throughout those millennia.

Beyond Earth: Strategic Pathways To A Multiplanet Civilization And The Case For Mars Settlement, Andrew Targowski

Comparative Civilizations Review

This research provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of the transition toward a multiplanet civilization, with a special focus on Mars as humanity’s first major step beyond Earth. By addressing technological, political, economic, and ethical dimensions, it aims to inform policymakers, scientists, and the public about the feasibility, challenges, and philosophical implications of interplanetary expansion.

As humanity approaches the threshold of becoming a multiplanet civilization, it faces unprecedented scientific, technological, economic, and ethical challenges. This paper explores the rationale, methodologies, and critical considerations for establishing sustainable human settlements beyond Earth, with a particular focus on Mars. Early Adult Outcomes Of 4-H Program Alumni: A Propensity-Matched Comparative Study, Steven M. Worker, Roshan K. Nayak, Anne Marie Iaccopucci, Nicole Marshall-Wheeler

Journal of Youth Development

A young person’s engagement in high-quality youth development programs should lead to stronger positive outcomes as a young adult. Theoretical literature advances broad indicators that mark success in young adulthood; however, there is a dearth of empirical publications reporting long-term outcomes to support this assumption. We conducted a cross-sectional survey study to report on three long-term outcomes (economic stability, health and well-being, and community involvement) of young adult (aged 19 to 34) alumni of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program. We compared 4-H alumni outcomes to matched peers using secondary data sources. The 4-H alumni sample demonstrated more …

The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson Sep 2025

The God Prompt And Deus Ex Machina: Techno-Theological Tropes And Operational Metaphors In Generative Media, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This study reframes two durable tropes—the ―God Prompt‖ and the deus ex machina—as analytic lenses for understanding how contemporary generative systems stage beginnings and endings of cultural production. The ―God Prompt‖ denotes command-driven synthesis in which minimal textual instructions instantiate content on demand, crystallizing a production loop of input, model execution, and post hoc evaluation that orients anticipation toward instantaneous yield and controllable variation. The deus ex machina names an externally imposed resolution that interrupts causal development—historically a crane-borne god, functionally an algorithmic override—thereby concentrating attention on closure mechanics rather than world-building continuity. Read together, the pair offers a compact …

Designing For Complementarity: Skills, Work, And Education In The Age Of Ai — A Review, James Hutson Sep 2025

Designing For Complementarity: Skills, Work, And Education In The Age Of Ai — A Review, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This review synthesizes 2023–2025 evidence on how generative AI and automation are reconfiguring role structures, skill demands, and entry pathways, and proposes design principles that shift attention from task substitution to role redesign and talent architecture. Theoretical framework: Drawing on task-based labor economics, socio-technical systems design, and humancapital complementarity, the review distinguishes domains where substitution pressures concentrate from those where augmentation dominates. Method: A narrative review of peerreviewed studies, official statistics, and policy/industry reports prioritized empirically grounded findings on employment effects, skills, governance, and program outcomes; inclusion emphasized methodological transparency and recency. Results and discussion: Convergent evidence shows contraction in …

Faculty Research 2025

The European Society for Immunodeficiencies patient registry (ESID-R), established in 1994, is one of the world's largest databases on inborn errors of immunity (IEI). IEI are genetic disorders predisposing patients to infections, autoimmunity, inflammation, allergies, and malignancies. Treatments include antimicrobial therapy, immunoglobulin replacement, immune modulation, stem cell transplantation, and gene therapy. Data from 194 centers in 33 countries capture clinical manifestations and treatments from birth onward, with annually expected updates. This report reviews the ESID-R's structure, data content, and impact. The registry includes 30,628 patient datasets (aged 0-97.9 years; median follow-up: 7.2 years; total 825,568.2 patient-years), with 13,550 cases in …

Assessing The Impact Of Tungiasis On Children’S Quality Of Life In Kenya, Lynne Elson, Berrick Otieno, Abneel Matharu, Naomi Riithi, Esther Chongwo, Francis Mutebi, Hermann Feldmeier, Jürgen Krücken, Ulrike Fillinger, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea, Tunga penetrans which penetrates the skin causing considerable pain and itching. In this cross-sectional study we aimed to assess its impact on the quality of life of school children in Kenya. School pupils (198) aged 8–14 years with tungiasis were randomly selected and interviewed using a tungiasis-specific quality of life instrument (TLQI). The caregivers of each infected pupil and 199 randomly selected caregivers of uninfected pupils were interviewed using the proxy KIDscreen52 to assess their child’s general health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Generalized linear models were used to …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: Health workers in the frontline are the major drivers of health systems in low- and middle-income countries. However, these health workers face both chronic and acute shocks and stressors that expose them to mental health problems which are often overlooked. We examined the prevalence of mental health problems, correlates of psychological functioning, and resilience of frontline health workers in Uganda.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study comprising 1800 frontline health workers across all regions of Uganda from August through October 2023. We used tools such as the PC-PTSD-5, PHQ9, PSS, GAD-7, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, and CD-RISC-10 to assess PTSD, …

Resource Assessment Report No. 5: West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Resource 2024 Assessment, Emma-Jade Tuffley, Simon De Lestang

Resource Assessment Reports

The West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean resource consists of crystal crab (snow) (Chaceon albus), champagne crab (spiny) (Hypothalassia acerba) and giant crab (Pseudocarcinus gigas). The resource is mainly accessed by the commercial West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Managed Fishery (WCDSCMF), which primarily targets crystal crabs. The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (WCRLMF) also retains a small amount of champagne crabs as byproduct of deep-water rock lobster fishing. The WCDSCMF is a pot-based fishery using baited pots operated in a long-line formation in shelf edge waters ( > 150 m in depth) off the West …
