Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Worldwide, extrusion-based additive construction of cementitious materials or 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) has gained significant momentum for large-scale construction in recent years. This technology has advanced building construction across the world; however, it is rather underdeveloped in transportation infrastructure construction. This paper addresses major hurdles hindering the wider adoption of 3DCP for unreinforced/plain pipe culvert construction. More specifically, the authors investigated the load-bearing capacity of large-scale pipes under the three-edge bearing (TEB) test. Additionally, the effects of printing discontinuities or seam sections on the structural behavior of 3DCP pipes, and their site implementation considerations as culvert structures were studied in …

Power And Inclusivity: Bolognesi Lgbtq Activists Reflect On The Italian Language, Lauren E. Duncan, Bruno Grazioli Sep 2025

Power And Inclusivity: Bolognesi Lgbtq Activists Reflect On The Italian Language, Lauren E. Duncan, Bruno Grazioli

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Research in psychology and linguistics identifies ways grammatically gendered language affects the ways in which people think, perceive, and make judgements in everyday life in ways that disadvantage women, and more recently, non-binary and trans people. Activists, scholars, and politicians have worked to identify and remedy the masculinist bias in the Italian language, with mixed results. In this research article we describe how ten Italian feminist LGBTQIA+ activists interviewed in Bologna in 2019 negotiate gendered language in their everyday lives and in their activism. Themes mentioned by the activists include how language constructs reality, both in its current restriction of …

Ageism In Employment, Aaron Li, Natalie Galucia, Cal J. Halvorsen Sep 2025

Ageism In Employment, Aaron Li, Natalie Galucia, Cal J. Halvorsen

Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging

The World Health Organization defines ageism as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination directed at individuals based on their age. As people remain in the labor force longer, they are increasingly exposed to ageist attitudes and discrimination. Ageism often manifests through negative assumptions about older workers’ abilities, adaptability, and value in the workplace. Older workers are frequently perceived as less competent, resistant to new technology, inflexible, or physically and mentally less capable.

How Do Self-Employment Rates Change Across The Lifespan?, Cal J. Halvorsen, Bruna C. Lopez

Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging

People pursue self-employment for a variety of reasons, including autonomy, the ability to pursue their own goals, and income. Yet for many older people who are not yet eligible for Social Security retirement benefits, which can begin at age 62, or Medicare, the U.S. health insurance program that generally begins at age 65, self-employment is also associated with less health insurance and retirement savings program coverage. 1,2 3,4

This research brief asks, What is the proportion of Americans who are self-employed, and how do these rates change throughout the life course?

Coding Anti-Discrimination Jurisprudence: A Hybrid Computational Model Of The Arlington Heights Test, Kevin S. Jobe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The aim of this study is to understand the judicial reasoning process of anti-discrimination jurisprudence by utilizing a hybrid computational model. The advancement of hybrid computational legal studies that combine “law-as-code” and “law-as-data” approaches have led to promising techniques for tackling complex legal reasoning tasks as multifactor judicial reasoning standards. Following this hybrid model, this study conducts a statistical and multilayer perceptron (MLP) analysis of the judicial reasoning process of the multifactor Arlington Heights discriminatory purpose test based on an original hand-coded dataset of discrimination cases. The results of the study show that “sequence of events” predominates the other factors …

Missing The Mark: The Cost Of Overlooking Black Students’ Cultural Capital, Christine L. Quince Sep 2025

Missing The Mark: The Cost Of Overlooking Black Students’ Cultural Capital, Christine L. Quince

Teacher Education

Historically, educators and policymakers have viewed Black students from a deficit lens, often presuming they lack the necessary skills needed to become academically successful. Today, teachers have countered deficit framing of Black students by learning more about and incorporating Black students’ assets and critical views of the world into their learning. One issue teachers run into, however, is knowing how to incorporate Black students’ cultures in their classroom learning. Using an embedded case study, this study analyzes how one white teacher draws on Black students’ cultural capital and the ways it impacts students’ classroom experiences. Findings reveal that disconnecting Black …

“Lead”Ing Industrial Science: Studying Occupational Lead Poisoning In The Early 20th Century, Rebekah E. Dreyer-Rowe

Master's Theses and Capstones

Lead was essential to the creation and coalescence of industrial hygiene as a discipline in the United States from its early days in the 1910s through the 1930s when the first professional associations of industrial hygiene were formed. In the early years, Alice Hamilton was central to the burgeoning field, and her seminal study on lead poisoning in Illinois industries thrust both her and her methods into the spotlight. Industrial hygienists of her generation followed her methods and came away with similar conclusions: that occupational diseases were rampant in the US, even if few people were studying them. In the …

Regulatory Impacts On Us Hazardous Waste Exports, Xiaofan Ji, Mengyu Wang, Tianyi Zhang Sep 2025

Regulatory Impacts On Us Hazardous Waste Exports, Xiaofan Ji, Mengyu Wang, Tianyi Zhang

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This paper examines the impact of key domestic and international regulations on US hazardous waste exports, focusing on shifts in export destinations and waste types from 2002 to 2023. Since 2005, OECD countries and US Trade Agreement Partners have become primary destinations for US hazardous waste, with significant surges after 2018 and a notable decline in 2022. An analysis of the regulatory landscape reveals that, while international frameworks such as the Basel Convention of 2021 have had a relatively limited impact on reducing US hazardous waste exports, domestic policies—particularly those in California—have more directly influenced export behaviors. Additionally, the US …

Global demand for seafood continues to rise, positioning aquaculture as a critical pathway for improving food security, nutrition, and rural livelihoods. In Kenya, the aquaculture sector remains constrained by structural challenges, with fish feed accounting for 60%–70% of production costs and limiting sectoral growth, particularly for smallholder farmers. This review critically analyzes Kenya's fish feed sector through an integrated PESTEL-SWOT framework, drawing on a scoping review of academic literature, policy reports, and sector development studies. The paper highlights key macro-level drivers, including fragmented policy implementation, dependency on imported ingredients, and climate-related risks, and connects these with internal industry dynamics such …

Joinder, Not Jurisdiction: Toward A New Theory Of Standing, Adam N. Steinman Sep 2025

Joinder, Not Jurisdiction: Toward A New Theory Of Standing, Adam N. Steinman

Faculty Scholarship

This Article builds on an important development in the Supreme Court’s standing jurisprudence to propose a novel theory that would allow more meaningful access to federal courts while vindicating legitimate separation-of-powers concerns. In its recent decision in TransUnion LLC v. Ramirez, the Supreme Court endorsed a theory of standing based on Article II, writing that litigation between private parties—even when explicitly authorized by Congress—can run afoul of the executive branch’s interest in “how to prioritize and how aggressively to pursue legal actions against defendants who violate the law.” This Article II move has been justifiably criticized. But it is …

Learning Orientation Field For Osm-Guided Autonomous Navigation, Yuming Huang, Wei Gao, Zhiyuan Zhang, Maani Ghaffari, Dezhen Song, Cheng-Zhong Xu, Hui Kong Sep 2025

Learning Orientation Field For Osm-Guided Autonomous Navigation, Yuming Huang, Wei Gao, Zhiyuan Zhang, Maani Ghaffari, Dezhen Song, Cheng-Zhong Xu, Hui Kong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

OpenStreetMap (OSM) has gained popularity recently in autonomous navigation due to its public accessibility, lower maintenance costs, and broader geographical coverage. However, existing methods often struggle with noisy OSM data and incomplete sensor observations, leading to inaccuracies in trajectory planning. These challenges are particularly evident in complex driving scenarios, such as at intersections or facing occlusions. To address these challenges, we propose a robust and explainable two-stage framework to learn an Orientation Field (OrField) for robot navigation by integrating LiDAR scans and OSM routes. In the first stage, we introduce a novel representation, OrField, which can provide orientations for each …

Preference-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning For Historical Route Estimation, Boshen Pan, Yaoxin Wu, Zhiguang Cao, Yaqing Hou, Guangyu Zou, Qiang Zhang Sep 2025

Preference-Based Deep Reinforcement Learning For Historical Route Estimation, Boshen Pan, Yaoxin Wu, Zhiguang Cao, Yaqing Hou, Guangyu Zou, Qiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) techniques have advanced solutions to Vehicle Routing Problems (VRPs). However, many of these methods focus exclusively on optimizing distance-oriented objectives (i.e., minimizing route length), often overlooking the implicit drivers' preferences for routes. These preferences, which are crucial in practice, are challenging to model using traditional DRL approaches. To address this gap, we propose a preference-based DRL method characterized by its reward design and optimization objective, which is specialized to learn historical route preferences. Our experiments demonstrate that the method aligns generated solutions more closely with human preferences. Moreover, it exhibits strong generalization performance across a …
