This syllabus provides students with an in-depth understanding of the current sociocultural, political, economic, and environmental state of Puerto Rico, contextualizing it within its history as a Spanish colony first, and a US territory later. It explores some key historical moments that have shaped Puerto Rico and their lasting impact. Students learn the mechanisms that Puerto Ricans on the islands have for engaging with the US government, and the forms of civic engagement within the island. In Puerto Rico, vistas públicas, or public hearings, are important spaces of dialogue and discussion between civil society and government representatives. The events are open to the public. They represent an opportunity to directly submit different perspectives before official decisions are made on important topics. Participating in vistas públicas is a fundamental part of asserting a democracy. Governmental organisms with vistas públicas include the Senate, House of Representatives, and various departments. The Financial Oversight and Management Board of Puerto Rico, created under the PROMESA Act in 2016, also holds public hearings. The Board consists of seven members appointed by the …

The purpose of this assignment is for students to analyze the differences among Puerto Rico’s main political parties, and how they represent themselves on social media. Students work in small groups to conduct content analysis of the Facebook posts of Puerto Rico’s main five political parties. After reviewing a brief description and history of each political party, students access their Facebook accounts and review the last twenty-five posts that each party made. This is an Introduction to Sociology course syllabus with a civic engagement emphasis. Sociology is one of the most well-suited disciplines to address civic issues and civic engagement. Sociology examines social life, social problems, and civic issues from “private troubles” to “public issues” and how these are interconnected (see C. Wright Mills). Social activism, which is a form of civic engagement, is one of sociology’s core commitments.

This final project asks that students step into the role of historians and community advocates by preserving the voices of those who experienced the Civil Rights Movement firsthand. Students will identify and interview someone in the community who either participated in the movement or was directly impacted by it. Students will then create a podcast episode based on the interview to explore the power, and necessity, of preserving history. Descriptive Inquiry To Advance Democracy In Early Childhood Special Education Teacher Preparation, Soyoung Park, Rae Leeper

The field of early childhood special education continues to be dominated by deficit-based perspectives of young disabled children. In contrast, Descriptive Inquiry supports educators to see children as multifaceted and full of strengths, promoting the democratic aim of schooling to nurture individual human flourishing for the good of society. Through a qualitative discourse analysis, we explore how 36 graduate students applied Descriptive Inquiry to their work with young disabled children. We highlight four cases of graduate students and their focus children in this article. Our findings indicate that Descriptive Inquiry can serve an important means of advancing democracy for young …
