Python 4.0 — A Gated, Forward-Safe Evolution, Joseph Jm Walker Oct 2025

Python 4.0 — A Gated, Forward-Safe Evolution, Joseph Jm Walker

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure proposes a gated upgrade model for the Python programming language that allows developers to adopt new runtime semantics, safer defaults, and modern concurrency primitives without breaking existing code. The design introduces an opt-in feature gate (from __future__ import python4_strict) on Python 3.x that enables UTC-aware datetimes, strict UTF-8 I/O, structured concurrency, and type-safe defaults at the module level. In Python 4.0, these semantics become the default, with a one-release rollback option for compatibility.

The proposal also includes tools for migration (refactor4 codemod framework), standardized packaging (pyproject.lock.json), and concurrency enhancements (TaskGroups, cancellation scopes, optional GIL-free mode). A governance model …

Research On Play-Based Learning In Mathematics, Natalia Do Prado Leite Ribeiro Cleto Oct 2025

Research On Play-Based Learning In Mathematics, Natalia Do Prado Leite Ribeiro Cleto

Transformations

This paper addresses the importance of using a play-based learning (PBL) approach when teaching mathematics in elementary schools, reinforcing its benefits such as the acquisition and development of concepts, the enhancement of students’ problem-solving skills, and the increase of students’ motivation to learn (Russo, Bragg and Russo, 2020). It explores one of the main causes for math learning difficulties in early learning and explores a possible solution using a play-based approach. This paper also provides a few strategies that can be used by teachers to implement a successful play-based approach in the classroom.

Background: Non-smokers and individuals with minimal smoking history represent a significant proportion of lung cancer cases but are often overlooked in current risk assessment models. Pulmonary nodules are commonly detected incidentally-appearing in approximately 24-31% of all chest CT scans regardless of smoking status. However, most established risk models, such as the Brock model, were developed using cohorts heavily enriched with individuals who have substantial smoking histories. This limits their generalizability to non-smoking and light-smoking populations, highlighting the need for more inclusive and tailored risk prediction strategies. Purpose: We aimed to develop a longitudinal radiomics-based approach for lung cancer …

The C-Terminal Regions Of Trak Proteins Contain Miro-Independent Mitochondrial Localization Domains, Lili Mitchell, Kathryn E. Reda, Hijab Fatima, Claudia E. Vasquez, Omar A. Quintero-Carmona Oct 2025

The C-Terminal Regions Of Trak Proteins Contain Miro-Independent Mitochondrial Localization Domains, Lili Mitchell, Kathryn E. Reda, Hijab Fatima, Claudia E. Vasquez, Omar A. Quintero-Carmona

Biology Faculty Publications

Current models suggest that MIRO GTPases anchor cytoskeletal motors to the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). However, our previous findings indicate that the unconventional myosin, MYO19, interacts with MIRO weakly and that a MIRO-independent MOM-localizing domain interacts more tightly with the MOM. To test the hypothesis that other MIRO interactors may also have MIRO-independent MOM binding, we examined interactions between TRAK proteins (microtubule motor-mitochondria adaptor proteins) and the MOM via quantitative fluorescence microscopy and steady-state kinetic approaches. Using GFP-TRAK truncations expressed in MIRO1-2 double knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts, we identified a MIRO-independent mitochondrial-binding domain in the C-terminus of TRAK1 and TRAK2, …

Early Look At Maine Primary Races: Platner Leads Mills, Collins Far Ahead Of Unknown Gop Challengers 10/23/2025, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Graham Platner leads Maine Governor Janet Mills in the race for the 2026 Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, fueled by a wide lead among self-described socialists and progressives along with young people. On the Republican side, incumbent Senator Susan Collins holds a commanding lead over her challengers, who are unknown to most likely Republican primary voters. In Maine's 2nd Congressional District, former Governor Paul LePage holds a narrow lead over incumbent Democrat Jared Golden in the 2026 House of Representatives contest. Maine Auditor Matthew Dunlap, who is challenging Golden for the Democratic nomination, is more popular than Golden among likely …

Mold Exposure And Cognitive Health During Menopausal Transitions: A Quantitative Analysis Using Secondary Data, Holly Jeannette Burns Oct 2025

Mold Exposure And Cognitive Health During Menopausal Transitions: A Quantitative Analysis Using Secondary Data, Holly Jeannette Burns

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mold exposure and menopausal transition have been independently linked to cognitive decline, yet their interaction among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations has not been well examined. This quantitative study is an exploration of how menopausal transition influences the relationship between mold exposure and cognitive health outcomes among women aged 40 to 60 living in low-income housing in the United States. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory was used to guide the cross-sectional design using secondary data from the 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES; N = 149). Weighted logistic regression and Hayes’ PROCESS (Models 2 and 4) were used to test associations …

Community, Autonomy, Irony: Lessons From Historic Rosenwald Schools, Ronald B. Matus Oct 2025

Community, Autonomy, Irony: Lessons From Historic Rosenwald Schools, Ronald B. Matus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Growing evidence suggests the Rosenwald schools of the American South, which anchored thousands of Black communities for a half century before desegregation, boosted academic outcomes for generations of Black students and helped fuel the civil rights movement. The research literature, however, is thin on what specifically made these schools successful. My research attempts to narrow the gaps by asking the Rosenwald alums themselves. Through semi-structured interviews, 10 alums in Florida identify defining features of their schools, including seamless community connections; a culture of high expectations for academic achievement and character development; and especially caring and committed teachers. The alums’ insights …

“The Best Laid Plans”: Evaluating How Housing Expectations Impact Prison Reentry, Vittoria A. Gonzalez Oct 2025

“The Best Laid Plans”: Evaluating How Housing Expectations Impact Prison Reentry, Vittoria A. Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study assesses the expectations of housing stability pre-release and evaluates how closely these expectations align with actual housing outcomes. Additionally, this study examines how the alignment between pre-release housing expectations influences recidivism. The aim is to understand how individuals’ perceptions of their housing plans prior to release affect their reentry experiences and to offer insights that may inform policy and program design. Using data collected pre- and post- release within a prison reentry program from 115 individuals, results indicate that higher overall housing concern is associated with slightly higher odds of recidivism, and mismatches between expected and actualized housing …

Division of Internal Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Medetomidine, a potent central acting α2 agonist, has emerged as a fentanyl adulterant in the non-medical opioid supply. Its use has been linked to a novel withdrawal syndrome that is often resistant to conventional treatment protocols. Four cases are presented exemplifying extreme, but increasingly common forms of this withdrawal syndrome. A literature review is provided demonstrating both the paucity of available literature as well as potential avenues for treatment and future research. As adulterants continue to proliferate in the illicit drug supply, clinicians should anticipate atypical withdrawal phenotypes and consider early intervention.

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Library has a history of conducting kindness audits that evaluate our physical space. The “Kindness Audit” has been an internal effort to reflect on how welcoming, accessible, and responsive our library environment is to all who use it. In Fall 2024, a working group reimagined this effort with a broadened lens: incorporating the physical space, the welcoming atmosphere, and the usability of the library website.

This presentation outlines the process and purpose of this updated audit. We designed and distributed a qualitative observation paper survey for our physical …

Fuel Adulteration Detection Using Open-Ended Coaxial Line And Circular Waveguide Techniques, Abdulrahman Alofi, Ahmed Shamseldin, Sharif Iqbal M. Sheikh, Hussein Attia

Faculty Publications

Fuel adulteration, the practice of blending lower-quality substances like kerosene with gasoline, poses significant challenges for ensuring fuel quality and safety. This study investigates two electromagnetic-based methods for detecting such adulteration: the open-ended coaxial line method and the circular waveguide method. The results reveal that the open-ended coaxial line technique is particularly effective in detecting kerosene contamination, identifying levels as low as 10% by measuring changes in the dielectric constant of the gasoline-kerosene mixture. Operating in the frequency range of 0.25–1.25 GHz, this method captures subtle changes in permittivity. In contrast, the circular waveguide method evaluates contamination by monitoring shifts …

Ambient Air Pollution And The Sex Ratio At Birth: A Systematic Review And Narrative Synthesis., Ursula Gazeley, Hallie Eilerts-Spinelli, Jasmin Abdel Ghany, Ana Bonell, Joshua Wilde

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Ambient air pollution is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirth, miscarriage, and preterm birth. However, its effects on the viability, implantation, and survival of conceptuses-largely unobserved before the clinical detection of pregnancy-remain poorly understood. Shifts in the sex ratio at birth (SRB) provide a sensitive, population-level indicator of sex-biased conception and pregnancy loss. This systematic review examined whether maternal exposure to ambient air pollution before conception and during pregnancy is associated with deviations in the SRB. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Global Health from inception to 12 February 2025 for observational studies assessing both ambient air pollution exposure …

Building From Within: Hr And Leadership As Strategic Resources In Micro And Small Business Growth Across Generations And Partnerships, Angelia Mathews Payne Oct 2025

Building From Within: Hr And Leadership As Strategic Resources In Micro And Small Business Growth Across Generations And Partnerships, Angelia Mathews Payne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Micro and small businesses (MSBs) with 1-19 employees represent 99.9% of all U.S. private sector businesses and contribute nearly $4 trillion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), yet academic research on their internal growth strategies remains limited. This study examines how human resources (HR) and leadership function as strategic resources for growth across successive generations and partnerships in MSBs, addressing a critical gap in understanding how these internal capabilities create competitive advantages in resource-constrained environments.

Grounded in Resource-Based View (RBV) theory, this research investigated how HR and leadership capabilities meet the criteria for strategic resources—being valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable …
