Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear Oct 2025

Dignity And Deepfakes, Michael Goodyear

Articles & Chapters

Today, we face a dangerous technosocial combination: AI-generated deepfakes and the Internet. Believable and accessible, these deepfakes have already spread sex, lies, and false advertisements across the Internet and targeted everyone from Taylor Swift to middle school students. Dissemination of deepfakes inflicts multifarious dignitary harms against their victims—especially women and LGBTQ+ persons—stripping them of control over their own identities, harming their reputations, and ostracizing them from society through shame.

Yet this is not the first time a new technology for capturing one’s likeness and a method for disseminating images threatened individuals’ dignity. In the late nineteenth century, the right of …

The Distribution Of The Number Of Mutations In The Genealogy Of A Sample From A Single Population, Yun-Xin Fu Oct 2025

The Distribution Of The Number Of Mutations In The Genealogy Of A Sample From A Single Population, Yun-Xin Fu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The number K of mutations in the genealogy of a sample of n sequences from a single population is one essential summary statistic in molecular population genetics and is equal to the number of segregating sites in the sample under the infinite-sites model. Although its expectation and variance are the most widely utilized properties, its sampling formula (i.e., probability distribution) is the foundation for all explorations related to K. Despite existence of an analytic sampling formula, its numerical application is limited due to susceptibility to error propagation. This paper presents a new sampling formula for K in a random sample …

Background: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the most common category of epilepsy-related mortality. Centrally mediated respiratory dysfunction has been observed to lead to death in the majority of cases of SUDEP. SUDEP also mainly occurs during nighttime sleep. This study seeks to identify sleep EEG and sleep-related respiratory biomarkers of SUDEP risk.

Methods: In this case-control study, we compared demographic, clinical, EEG, and respiratory data from people with epilepsy who later died of SUDEP (the SUDEP group) with data from age and sex-matched living people with epilepsy, classified as high risk of SUDEP (with ≥1 generalised tonic-clonic seizure …

Wire-In-Needle Versus Conventional Syringe-On-Needle Technique For Ultrasound-Guided Central Venous Catheter Insertion In The Internal Jugular Vein: The Win Randomized Trial, Kristen K Thomsen, Jovana Stekovic, Felix Köster, Alina Bergholz, Karim Kouz, Moritz Flick, Daniel I Sessler, Christian Zöllner, Bernd Saugel, Leonie Schulte-Uentrop

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Purpose: There are different techniques for ultrasound-guided central venous catheter (CVC) insertion. When using the conventional syringe-on-needle technique, the syringe needs to be removed from the needle after venous puncture to pass the guidewire through the needle into the vein. When, alternatively, using the wire-in-needle technique, the needle is preloaded with the guidewire, and the guidewire-after venous puncture-is advanced into the vein under real-time ultrasound guidance. We tested the hypothesis that the wire-in-needle technique reduces the time to successful guidewire insertion in the internal jugular vein compared with the syringe-on-needle technique in adults.

Methods: We randomized 250 patients to the …

Continuous Versus Bolus Norepinephrine Administration And Arterial Blood Pressure Stability During Induction Of General Anaesthesia In High-Risk Noncardiac Surgery Patients: A Randomised Trial, Christina Vokuhl, Karim Kouz, Moritz Flick, Linda Krause, Alina Kröker, Parisa Moll-Khosrawi, Christian Zöllner, Daniel I Sessler, Bernd Saugel, Kristen K Thomsen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Hypotension after induction of general anaesthesia is common in high-risk patients having noncardiac surgery. Anaesthesiologists often give manual boluses of vasopressors repeatedly to maintain blood pressure during induction of general anaesthesia, including the fast-acting vasopressor norepinephrine which has a short half-life. We tested the hypothesis that giving norepinephrine continuously during induction of general anaesthesia, compared with giving it as repeated manual boluses, improves blood pressure stability in high-risk noncardiac surgery patients.

Methods: In this single-centre trial, 72 participants undergoing noncardiac surgery were randomised to continuous norepinephrine infusion or manual bolus norepinephrine administration during induction of general anaesthesia. Blood pressure …

Tort Law In A World Of Scarce Compensatory Resources, Mark A. Geistfeld Oct 2025

Tort Law In A World Of Scarce Compensatory Resources, Mark A. Geistfeld

Michigan Law Review

Large corporations facing extensive tort liabilities have often gone into bankruptcy, forcing tort plaintiffs to accept pennies on the dollar as compensation for their injuries. Bankruptcy painfully illustrates the social fact that the compensatory properties of tort law depend on the availability of compensatory resources. Although this feature of tort law is self-evident, no one has adequately analyzed whether it matters for substantive tort doctrine, and if so, how.

Wealth would seem to be substantively irrelevant given the rule that excludes evidence concerning the defendant’s financial resources when determining breach or compensatory damages. The antecedent tort duty, however, depends on …

Mitochondrial Haplogroups, But Not Heteroplasmy, Are Associated With Midlife Cognitive Function, Nien Yeh Daphne Yu, Shea J Andrews, Lifang Hou, Myriam Fornage, Kristine Yaffe

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation may influence cognitive performance, but prior findings are inconsistent.

Methods: We analyzed data from 2308 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, assessing heteroplasmy (mtHz) burden and haplogroups (mtHg) from blood-derived mtDNA at three timepoints and cognitive function across multiple domains. Multivariate linear regression models and multivariate linear mixed models adjusted for age, sex, education, and race.

Results: MtDNA heteroplasmy burden and count were not associated with cognitive performance. However, mtHgs in macro-mtHg L were linked to poorer cognitive outcomes, particularly in processing speed and global cognition in cross-sectional and …

Unpacking Singapore's Leasehold Relativity Table: An Empirical And Legal Analysis, Koon Shing Kwong, Jing Rong Goh, Seng Wei, Edward Ti

Research Collection School Of Economics

In Singapore, most land is state-owned, with the state generally issuing leasehold estates via state leases of not more than 99 years1, depending on the intended land use. Naturally, the value of a leasehold estate, which erodes over time as the lease approaches the end of its term, is a key component of the premium charged for lease renewals, or the tax imposed for permission given in relation to a development that would increase the value of the land. By law, the state valuation of leasehold land is prescribed by a leasehold relativity table colloquially known as ‘Bala’s Curve’ or …

Product Technology Adoption And Aggregate Innovation, Qiugu He, Xuan Luo, Fan Zheng Oct 2025

Product Technology Adoption And Aggregate Innovation, Qiugu He, Xuan Luo, Fan Zheng

Research Collection School Of Economics

We document that a firm's research and development (R&D) expenditure depends on its product diversity. Combining with the fact that Chinese manufacturers often enter new product markets via technology adoption, we develop a quantitative framework of innovation and technology adoption, allowing firms to expand their product scopes. Firms adopt technologies across multiple fields to expand their knowledge base, which in turn serves as an input for subsequent innovation or adoption. Counterfactual analysis from the 2000s reveals that two-thirds of knowledge privately held by all firms is generated through adoption, accounting for one-third of aggregate innovation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Salvage endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been proposed for previously attempted colorectal lesions (PACLs), yet the extensive submucosal fibrosis impacts procedural difficulty and resection outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of salvage ESD for the treatment of PACLs.

METHODS: This international, multicenter study enrolled consecutive patients who underwent ESD to manage PACLs. Rates of en bloc, R0 resection, and local recurrence were assessed for efficacy. Safety was assessed by adverse events (AEs), procedure-related mortality, and the need for surgical management.

RESULTS: Of 415 lesions, en bloc rate was 83.4%, the …

Evaluation Of Treatment Modalities And Oncologic Outcomes In Hand Soft Tissue Sarcomas-A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Juan Pretell

All Publications

Background/objectives: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) of the hand are rare, representing only 2% of all STS. The small size and benign appearance of these tumors often lead to unplanned excisions and diagnostic delay. This systematic review sought to characterize the clinical presentation, histology, treatment modalities, and oncological outcomes of hand STS.

Methods: A systematic review of PubMed and Embase was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO. We included studies with ≥10 patients with STS that provided data on treatment options and oncologic outcomes. Data was extracted regarding demographics, tumor features, treatment modalities, and survival metrics.

Refugee Health And Nutrition, Miriam Mutambudzi, Naomi Shanguhyia

The Lender Center for Social Justice

Refugees resettled in Syracuse, New York, face persistent challenges to maintaining healthy, culturally appropriate diets, barriers that extend far beyond food availability. This policy brief explores the complex intersection of nutrition, culture, and health equity among refugee families. Through community-engaged research with sub-Saharan African refugee households, findings reveal that food insecurity remains widespread, with families struggling to access familiar ingredients and affordable, nutritious options. Despite these constraints, refugee families demonstrate remarkable resilience and commitment to preserving traditional diets and promoting health within their households. However, limited cultural competence in food assistance programs and exposure of youth to unhealthy dietary norms …

Regulating Cryptocurrency Airdrops, Peter Sie

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

A significant number of blockchain users is U.S.-based. However, regulatory ambiguity imposes barriers for U.S. users to fully and legally embrace blockchain technology, especially when it comes to cryptocurrencies. The industry remains rife with bad actors and inadequate regulation that consequently harm investors. Recently, a phenomenon known as cryptocurrency airdrops—widely viewed as “free” token distributions to incentivize blockchain adoption and promote decentralization—has drawn significant attention. But is this just another sham under the guise of the commonly touted “decentralization” ethos of blockchain technology?

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has maintained that most cryptocurrencies are securities subject to regulation. However, …
