Lights, Camera, Action! Mapping Concentration, Wealth, And Stability In Nyc Film Production, Mariah Szabo
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This project is a comprehensive analysis of over 93,000 New York City film permits from 2012-2025. A geographic analysis reveals that filming activity is concentrated in a small number of neighborhoods, although slight differences are visible based on the type of media being filmed. This geographic pattern has remained stable over the 13 years studied, despite major disruptions like COVID-19 and the streaming boom. Notably, a joint analysis with a New York City household income dataset shows that these neighborhoods stand as wealthier than the average New York City neighborhood. The result is an “NYC on Film” that represents only …

French Reactions To 9/11: An Analysis Of French Newspaper Articles Published September 12, 2001, Rose Plottel
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
This research presents a hierarchical cluster analysis and aspect based sentiment analysis (ABSA) of French newspaper articles about the September 11 attacks published on September 12, 2001. The study focuses specifically on the key thematic clusters discussed across these articles and the variance in sentiment scores across them. Using Dendrogram Hierarchical Modeling and ABSA, the model identified six thematic clusters and measured thematic scores for each cluster as well as their key terms on a scale ranging [-1,1]. The analysis revealed simultaneous sympathy for the American people alongside scrutiny of potential American retaliation.

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic lung disease in preterm infants, often leads to acute respiratory exacerbations triggered by infections. Our previous mouse study suggested that azithromycin's anti-inflammatory properties may benefit virus-induced respiratory illnesses prophylactically.
Methods: In this single-center, double-blind RCT, 60 children (6 months to 6 years) with BPD received azithromycin (5 mg/kg three times weekly; n = 30) or placebo (n = 30) for one winter season (October to March). Primary outcome was the total number of days of unscheduled healthcare clinic visits, ER visits, and hospital days. Secondary outcomes comprised clinic visits, ER visits, hospital admissions, hospital …
Bone Marrow Endosteum In Homeostasis And Metastasis, Yuta Nakai, Wanida Ono, Noriaki Ono
Bone Marrow Endosteum In Homeostasis And Metastasis, Yuta Nakai, Wanida Ono, Noriaki Ono
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The endosteum is a thin layer of connective tissue lining the inner surfaces of bones adjoining the medullary cavity. The endosteum houses a variety of cells crucial for bone growth, repair and remodelling, including bone-forming osteoblasts, bone-resorbing osteoclasts and their precursor cells. Historically, the endosteum has been extensively studied as a key site for haematopoiesis by which blood cells are incessantly produced. However, recent studies have defined the endosteum as a niche for skeletal stem cells, underscoring the importance of the harmony between the inner endosteum and the outer periosteum in maintaining bone homeostasis. The endosteum also plays a significant …

Purpose: Successful implementation of school sexual health curricula relies on students receiving sufficient exposure to lesson content. This large replication study assesses the longitudinal association between exposure to sexual health lesson frequency and content domains and delayed sexual initiation of middle school students.
Methods: Post hoc data analysis was conducted using a large harmonized dataset from 3 randomized controlled trials evaluating It's Your Game curricula in the South Central United States. The sample comprised 1,022 sexually inexperienced middle school students (grades 7 and 8) who completed grade 9 follow-up after using either a 24-lesson hybrid (classroom and computer-based) (It's Your …
The Fear Factor: Exploring The Experiences Of Fear Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly J. Raines
The Fear Factor: Exploring The Experiences Of Fear Of Secondary School Teachers, Kelly J. Raines
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
Fear can be a powerful catalyst for cognitive potential, or a potent agent of havoc. This descriptive (transcendental) phenomenological study aimed to understand the phenomenon of fear experienced by teachers in public and private secondary schools in Central Florida. Semi-structured interviews collected data from the purposive sample, and the data were thoroughly analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) model. The emergent essence of the lived experience of teachers identified the phenomenon of fear as the inducement of a debilitating sense of powerlessness that diminishes self-confidence and self-efficacy, resulting in emotional, cognitive, and/or physical impairments that directly affect the metacognitive potential of teachers. …
Much Ado About Critical Race Theory, Matthew Patrick Shaw
Much Ado About Critical Race Theory, Matthew Patrick Shaw
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article offers novel observation and critical intervention in the challenge to state laws which have been adopted, allegedly, to prevent the teaching of critical race theory
(CRT) in public schools. Against the trend of recent scholarship that understands these laws as curricular censorship of topical subjects and seeks to contest their validity on those grounds, this Article more accurately identifies them as pedagogical censorship: Limits on teaching methods, which raise different, potentially more dispositive questions about the states’ educational decision-making authority—questions that the U.S. Supreme Court has long sought to avoid. But exposing these so-called “anti-CRT” laws as neither …
Dual-Class Contracting--A Response To Roberto Tallarita, Brian Broughman
Dual-Class Contracting--A Response To Roberto Tallarita, Brian Broughman
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Roberto Tallarita's Dual-Class Contracting confronts a question that scholars and policymakers have largely overlooked: once a firm opts out of "one-share, one-vote," how does it determine the degree and duration of voting inequality? This is not a binary choice between single- and dual-class structures, but a continuum with infinitely many possible configurations. To investigate this question, Tallarita assembled a dataset of 293 corporate charters from dual-class IPOs completed between 1996 and 2022. Despite the wide lati- tude finms have to tailor these arrangements, he finds that most converge on strikingly similar terms-granting holders of high-vote stock majority control with just …

Ethical Sourcing In The Context Of Health Data Supply Chain Management: A Value Sensitive Design Approach, Camille Nebeker Edd, Ms, Ellen Wright Clayton, Et Al.
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Abstract
Objective
The Bridge2AI program is establishing rules of practice for creating ethically sourced health data repositories to support the effective use of ML/AI in biomedical and behavioral research. Given the initially undefined nature of ethically sourced data, this work concurrently developed definitions and guidelines alongside repository creation, grounded in a practical, operational framework.
Materials and Methods
A Value Sensitive Design (VSD) approach was used to explore ethical tensions across stages of health data repository development. The conceptual investigation drew from supply chain management (SCM) processes to (1) identify actors who would interact with or be affected by the data …
Domestic Stability And International Trade Order, Sannoy Das
Domestic Stability And International Trade Order, Sannoy Das
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This Article challenges the theoretical frameworks through which we have so far apprehended the crisis of the liberal international trade and economic order, precipitated by relentless unilateral action--whether tariffs or industrial policy--especally in the United States. It argues that the conventional concerns about unilateralism overlook the ways in which unilateraism has been--and can be-- a foundation for international order rather than its antithesis. Our contemporary difficulty is that we typically understand unilateral action as a breach of an international norm. This way of thinking follows from nineteenth-century liberal internationalism. But a deeper tradition in the law of nations shows that …

How The Billable Hour Can Survive Generative Ai, Jonah Perlin
How The Billable Hour Can Survive Generative Ai, Jonah Perlin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The legal profession is rapidly adopting generative AI technology. With this shift has come an increasingly common assumption that generative AI will significantly reduce or even bring an end to hourly billing. The logic underlying this conclusion seems intuitive: if AI reduces the time lawyers spend on certain tasks while eliminating others altogether, then the total number of billable hours will fall. That decline, in turn, could threaten the financial viability of hourly billing, despite its place as the dominant law firm compensation model over the past half century.
This Article challenges this assumption. It argues instead that the billable …
Attribution As Architecture In The Digital Age, Laura A. Heymann
Attribution As Architecture In The Digital Age, Laura A. Heymann
Faculty Publications
As technology changes, one thing remains constant: human creators seem to care about attribution, whether as creators or as audience members. Current U.S. law lacks the means for many creators to effectively address attributional interests, and experience has shown that top-down, imposed technological solutions can fail to gain the necessary buy-in and adoption. The best approach, examples suggest, is for platforms to think of attribution as part of the architecture of their systems, but to take their cues from user-developed, individualized solutions, which will not only be more responsive to user interests but also allow adaptation as interests change and …
