What Time Is It? It Is 8 And 1/2 Time: A Rare Case Of Ischemic Stroke Consistent With Eight-And-A-Half Syndrome, Jessica Daza, Marcelo Bedoya-Sommerkamp, Eunbee Cho, Celia Patricia Daza, Francisco Gomez, Fatimah Bello, Jia Lin
School of Medicine Publications
Eight-and-a-half syndrome is a rare neuro-ophthalmic syndrome characterized by conjugate horizontal gaze palsy, ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and ipsilateral facial nerve palsy. It results from a lesion affecting the paramedian pontine reticular formation, the medial longitudinal fasciculus, and the abducens nucleus of the same side, at the level of the lower pons. We present a case of a 49-year-old man with 2-week diplopia and 3-day right-sided facial droop, drooling, and dysarthria. CT angiography of the head and neck revealed atherosclerotic disease, with decreased caliber of the basilar artery at the level of the pons. Brain MRI showed a subacute ischemic lesion …

Burdens Of Proof In Criminal Procedure, Eve Brensike Primus
Burdens Of Proof In Criminal Procedure, Eve Brensike Primus
Articles
The Supreme Court’s haphazard approach to allocating burdens of proof in criminal procedure has created a system in which constitutional rights can be rendered meaningless simply because defendants are required to prove things they cannot possibly know. Even though allocations of the burden of proof often drive litigation outcomes, the Court has failed to establish clear burden allocation structures for cases arising under the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and Fourteenth Amendments, leaving lower courts split about how to allocate the burdens. When the Supreme Court does allocate burdens, it often does so without explanation or consideration of key factors. Recent Supreme …
Insect Pests Of Wheat In North India: A Comprehensive Review Of Their Bio-Ecology And Integrated Management Strategies, Gurveer Singh, Neelendra K. Joshi
Insect Pests Of Wheat In North India: A Comprehensive Review Of Their Bio-Ecology And Integrated Management Strategies, Gurveer Singh, Neelendra K. Joshi
Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a vital food crop for majority of the world's population. However, its yield potential is significantly threatened by insect pests, which adversely affect production, quality, and overall food security. The diverse array of insect pests throughout wheat's growth stages necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their interactions with wheat cultivation. This review critically assesses the diversity, biology, ecology, and management strategies of major insect pests in North India, including aphids, termites, pink stem borer, gram pod borer, armyworm, and brown wheat mite. These pests infest wheat at various growth stages, posing significant challenges to sustainable production. …

Faith Vs. Morality: Do Viewpoints Of Protestant Christians Attending Psu Align With Anti-Transgender Legislation Being Proposed In Oregon?, Asher Schneider
Faith Vs. Morality: Do Viewpoints Of Protestant Christians Attending Psu Align With Anti-Transgender Legislation Being Proposed In Oregon?, Asher Schneider
University Honors Theses
Transgender-identifying individuals living within the US face significantly higher rates of discrimination and harassment compared to the general US population. Recently, there have been thousands of legislative measures introduced with the intent of limiting the rights of Transgender and other LGBTQ identifying individuals. Christian Americans are significantly more likely than irreligious Americans to be against various rights for Transgender people, such as the ability to participate in sports or use restrooms that correlate with their self-identified gender rather than their biological sex. Research indicates that recent anti-transgender legislative measures introduced in several states is in part driven by the large …

Mama, Appa, And Titi: What Makes Words Sound Parental? A Phonological Exploration Of Parental Terms In And Beyond The Gender Binary, Madeleine C. S. Kruckemeye , '26
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This paper addresses the following research question: What phonological components make a word sound ‘parental’ cross-linguistically and (how) do those components relate to the social genders associated with the word? The goal in answering this question is to extend Jakobson (1960) and Murdock’s (1959) work to be inclusive of our current understanding of gender and gender roles, and to create more options for queer parents and other families that are recognizable as parental terms, an important factor as found by Frank et al. (2017). The research consists of a literature review, an analysis of cross-linguistic parental terms, and an online …

Defining The Field Of Law And Macroeconomics: A Framework From International Monetary Law, Nikita Aggarwal, Adam Feibelman
Defining The Field Of Law And Macroeconomics: A Framework From International Monetary Law, Nikita Aggarwal, Adam Feibelman
Articles
This Article proposes an analytical framework for defining the contours of the emerging field of law and macroeconomics drawing on the International Monetary Fund's principle of "macro-criticality." Such a framework can help steer scholarly debate toward a clearer understanding of the relationship between law and the economy and inform policymaking within that domain. In its native context, the macro-criticality principle limits the IMF's jurisdiction to policy areas that are critical for member countries' domestic and external stability. The IMF's approach distinguishes between a core set of macrocritical policies and other non-core policies that are contextually macrocritical. Over time, the IMF …

Characterization Of Cooled Turbine Efficiency For Off-Design Performance Models, Alberto Garcia
Characterization Of Cooled Turbine Efficiency For Off-Design Performance Models, Alberto Garcia
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Gas turbine performance modeling is essential for predicting engine behavior across design and off-design conditions. Yet the treatment of cooling or service flows remains inconsistent, as these streams interact with the main flow in complex ways and their contribution to turbine work depends on how they are represented in performance models. The challenge is especially present in “black-box” approaches, where only inlet and outlet conditions are known and engineers must decide whether to introduce cooling flows upstream (if performing useful work) or downstream (if not). This thesis examines how different definitions of isentropic power and cooling-flow treatment affect the apparent …

Faculty Journal Articles
A university was awarded a "Teacher Prep to Practice" grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for a project titled "Developing Culturally-Relevant Aspiring Teachers." The university collaborated with local school districts to host 2, 3-day "summer institute" professional development sessions, focusing on culturally relevant education, positive behavior support, trauma-informed practices, and effective coaching for novice teachers. The intention was to build a cohort of trained, veteran teachers equipped to serve as mentors for pre-service and early career educators. This paper provides an overview of the summer institute and shares the results of a related mixed-methods research study.
We Are Missing Multiple Model Integration In The Psychology Of Implicit Bias, Nathan Lackey
We Are Missing Multiple Model Integration In The Psychology Of Implicit Bias, Nathan Lackey
Philosophy
Since the 1990s, psychologists have developed multiple models of prejudicial attitudes. I argue that these models generally fall into one of two categories: individualistic or situationist. The former abstract away (or omit) environmental features from the system of interest and locate the phenomenon in the mind of the individual. However, new models of prejudicial attitudes have foregrounded just those features abstracted away in preceding models. These conceptualizations of attitudes foreground situations. The scientists that posit them claim that measures of implicit bias are better understood as measures of places as opposed to people, for example. These categories of models have …

Physical activity and screen time influence many adolescent' fitness problems. This research aims to determine the relationship between screen time and physical activity on adolescent students' cardio-respiratory endurance (VO2max). This research used observational analysis with a cross-sectional study involving 70 teenage students at an Information and Network Technology Vocational School consisting of male and female teenage students. The Screen Time of Adolescents (QUEST) questionnaire was used to assess screen time, the physical activity instrument used the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ v2.0) to assess physical activity levels, and the VO2max instrument used the 20-meter Multistage Fitness Test (MFT). The data …

The Current State Of Diagnostics For Neuroimmunological Disorders In Africa, Malya Sahu, Mashina Chomba, Fiifi Duodu, Monica Diaz, Dilraj Sokhi, Deanna Saylor
Internal Medicine, East Africa
The epidemiology of neuroimmunological disorders in Africa remains poorly understood. Regional variation in diagnostics and provider knowledge has led to challenges in real-world application of diagnostic criteria. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of clinicians practicing in Africa to characterize the current state of clinical diagnostic resources and developed a clinician-driven prioritized action plan. 130 respondents from 24 out of 54 countries in Africa participated (44% national response rate). Most respondents specialized in neurology (n = 86, 66%) and practiced in an urban setting (n = 84, 65%). While all participating countries had access to a neurologist and ophthalmologist, only half …
