Teduglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) analogue that was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pediatric (>1 year) intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome in 2019. GLP-2 analogues promote rapid intestinal adaptation, increasing the absorptive capacity of residual intestine after surgical resection to aid the achievement of enteral autonomy or reduce parenteral nutrition requirements. Despite relatively few reported side effects, there is a theoretical risk of proliferative complications. Here we present an intriguing case of a pediatric patient found to have a decade-long retained, discontinuous segment of colon from a …

Polymyositis (PM) has been in the diagnostic armamentarium in medicine since the mid-nineteenth century. Medicine training puts a heavy emphasis on this diagnosis, and anyone with proximal muscle weakness with elevated serum creatinine kinase is assumed to be PM and a number of patients were rendered this diagnosis without additional testing. This article addresses the historical aspects of the diagnosis of PM and its evolution. We review this literature that addresses the rarity of this diagnosis and rightly puts in perspective in terms of its occurrence in relation to other inflammatory myositides.

Objective: A better understanding of factors associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) disease activity and disability is needed. Given the strong link between comorbid depression and MS disease activity and disability, we aimed to determine whether the depression genetic burden, as modelled using its polygenic score, is associated with MS disease activity and disability worsening.
Methods: In this cohort study, we used samples from neurologist-defined adult people with MS (PwMS) followed in clinical care or during a clinical trial from existing cohorts: Canada, the United States (US), and Sweden with extensive longitudinal phenotypes. We computed the depression polygenic score (PGS) and …

Reading The Word And The World: Overstanding Literacy In Aboriginal And Chinese Classrooms, Gui Ying Annie Yang-Heim
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This qualitative comparative case study examines how culturally grounded philosophies of education shape the teaching and learning of reading in two cross-cultural contexts—an Aboriginal Australian classroom and urban Chinese elementary schools. Drawing on interpretive and reflexive methodologies, it investigates how Aboriginal and Confucian epistemologies influence literacy practices and how these practices align with or resist dominant, decontextualized models of reading instruction. Data sources include classroom observations, reading assessments, teacher interviews, and researcher reflections. Conceptually framed by Gadamer’s hermeneutics, Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, Habermas’s typology of knowledge, and the Caribbean concept of overstanding, this research finds that Aboriginal literacy is …

The Root Cause Of Perceived Appraisal Politics Using Evidence From The South Korean Public Sector, Jinwoong Yoo, Saeyeon Roh, Mohamed Haddoud, Smita Tripathi
Plymouth Business School
The purpose of this study is to investigate the root causes of Perceived Appraisal Politics (PAP) within the public sector in South Korea. Scholars in the field of Human Resource Management (HRM) have identified the determinants of PAP in an effort to mitigate it. However, the complex interactions among those determinants and root causes have been overlooked. Therefore, we adopt a novel methodology in this study that combines Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) and fuzzy-Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (f-DEMATEL). The findings indicate that the root causes of PAP include the presence of cliques, ambiguity of appraisal policies and goal ambiguity …

Potentially Toxic Metals, Anthropogenic Microfibres And Other Microplastics In Sediments From A Small, Urban Estuary (Plym, Southwest England), Kwong Ricky Li, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Anthropogenic microfibres (AMFs) and microplastics (MPs) are pervasive and ubiquitous environmental contaminants of growing concern. However, their study in geosolids, like sediments, is often conducted in the absence of other important geochemical and anthropogenic markers. In the present study, surface and subsurface sediments from the Plym Estuary, southwest England, have been analysed for AMFs and MPs along with organic matter (as loss on ignition; LOI), calcium, iron, manganese and potentially toxic metals (PTMs). The latter were heterogeneously distributed throughout the estuary because of multiple inputs and variations in sediment granulometry. AMFs were mainly constructed of cellulosic and petroleum-based polymers and …

Water that flows through permeable ultramafic rocks produces high abundances of molecular hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and other small organic molecules. Such products can fuel life in the rocky subseafloor, be extracted for energy, and may have played a role in pre-biological chemical synthesis on early Earth or other planetary bodies. The International Ocean Discovery Program drilled a new 1268-m-deep borehole (U1601C) into serpentinized mantle with minor gabbroic rocks on the Atlantis Massif, ∼800-m north of the Lost City hydrothermal field (30°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Measured temperatures of the disturbed borehole reached 91.3 °C, and equilibrated temperatures …

Model Fatigue: Debugging Hector Through Climate Computational Aesthetics, Helen Pritchard, Guillemette Legrand
School of Art, Design and Architecture
In this paper, we document three computational features of the climate model Hector by translating the modalities through which the model predicts climate futures in a game engine. We build upon the computational aesthetics of M. Beatrice Fazi and Matthew Fuller (2016) and suggest additional characteristics of computation to their proposed list. We argue that these computational aesthetics are essential to climate modelling. The three features are time series, couplings and cosmograms, which are based on our practical and theoretical inquiry into Hector’s computation and literacy. We develop a framework that employs two processual methods: translating the model’s operations into …

Relationship Of Professional Military Education And Generative Artificial Intelligence With Mission Analysis, Pinky A. De Garcia
Ateneo School of Government Publications
The increasing integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into military education presents opportunities for supporting instructional processes and military decision-making competencies. Previous studies have examined the applications, benefits, and challenges of artificial intelligence in military education and decision-making. However, further investigation is needed to understand how GenAI usage relates to specific competencies developed through Professional Military Education (PME), particularly mission analysis. This study examined the relationship of PME and the frequency of GenAI usage with perceived mission analysis accuracy among 200 purposively selected military personnel. A quantitative, non-experimental approach was employed using descriptive statistics, correlational analysis, and hierarchical regression. The …

(Un)Just Transitions For Youth And The Disabled? The Exclusionary Pressures Facing Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics (Stem) Education, Elizabeth Done, Helen Knowler, Irina Lazar, Sylvia Hayes, Joshua Lait, Andrea Perez-Porres
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper highlights the under-representation of young people with disabilities in STEM subjects and career pathways, with particular reference to the engineering sector given its prominent role in the design of energy systems related to net-zero policies. We consider the role of physical infrastructure, and pedagogic and representational practices, in facilitating the marginalisation and under-representation of young people with disabilities. Ultimately, we seek a broader understanding of the ‘just transition’ that acknowledges the role of education in ensuring the active participation of all young people, regardless of learning difficulty or disability or social identity, in that transition. The research is …

Artificial Intelligence To Detect Developmental Dysplasia Of Hip: A Systematic Review, Suketu Bhavsar, Bhanu B. Gowda, Maulini Bhavsar, Sanjay Patole, Shripada Rao, Chandra Rath
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Aim: Deep learning (DL), a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), has been applied to diagnose developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) on pelvic radiographs and ultrasound (US) images. This technology can potentially assist in early screening, enable timely intervention and improve cost-effectiveness. We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the DL algorithm in detecting DDH. Methods: PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, EMCARE, the clinicaltrials.gov (clinical trial registry), IEEE Xplore and Cochrane Library databases were searched in October 2024. Prospective and retrospective cohort studies that included children (< 16 years) at risk of or suspected to have DDH and reported hip ultrasonography (US) or X-ray images using AI were included. A review was conducted using the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration Diagnostic Test Accuracy Working Group. Risk of bias was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool. Results: Twenty-three studies met inclusion criteria, with 15 (n = 8315) evaluating DDH on US images and eight (n = 7091) on pelvic radiographs. The area under the curve of the included studies ranged from 0.80 to 0.99 for pelvic radiographs and 0.90–0.99 for US images. Sensitivity and specificity for detecting DDH on radiographs ranged from 92.86% to 100% and 95.65% to 99.82%, respectively. For US images, sensitivity ranged from 86.54% to 100% and specificity from 62.5% to 100%. Conclusion: AI demonstrated comparable effectiveness to physicians in detecting DDH. However, limited evaluation on external datasets restricts its generalisability. Further research incorporating diverse datasets and real-world applications is needed to assess its broader clinical impact on DDH diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study reports on patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) therapy trends across the Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a 12-year (2011-2022) retrospective study of premature infants (< 33 weeks) with a PDA. We utilized descriptive statistics to compare demographic, inpatient, and discharge characteristics in 3-year epochs.
RESULT: From 54,813 infants, 19,843 (36%) had a diagnosis of PDA. Use of pharmacotherapy increased 44% (relative) over time, mostly with increased acetaminophen use. There was a 12.7-fold increase in exposure to multiple PDA medications over the study period. While the rate of definitive closure did not change, use of transcatheter PDA closure increased from 0 to 20.3% and surgical ligation decreased from 25.1% to 3.6%.
CONCLUSION: There has been …

PURPOSE: Sterile alpha and TlR motif containing-1 (SARM1) protein has been demonstrated to play a critical role in the initiation of Wallerian degeneration after nerve injury. The goal of this study was to assess whether blockade of SARM1 activity inhibits Wallerian degeneration following nerve transection, potentially promoting more rapid recovery of axonal function.
METHODS: An adeno-associated virus plasmid encoded with a dominant-negative SARM1 protein fused with green fluorescent protein to impair SARM1 function, was injected into 24 juvenile rats to create a SARM1 dominant-negative (SARM1-DN) phenotype. Twenty-four control rats were injected with a control plasmid expressing only green fluorescent protein. …

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation-related stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The comparative effectiveness and safety of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) devices, compared with one another and with anticoagulation, is unclear.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of all clinical trials comparing the Watchman and Amplatzer Amulet LAAC devices with each other or with warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). The primary comparison was between LAAC devices with secondary comparisons to anticoagulation. The primary effectiveness outcomes were any stroke and all-cause death. Safety outcomes included any thromboembolism, device embolization, and pericardial effusion.
RESULTS: There …

Generally file formats on modern systems are single byte streams, and there are many tools available to help identify and determine what software is needed to make use of the format. When dealing with formats born on Macintosh systems, a single byte stream is often not all that is needed to make use of the formats. On older Macintosh systems a Type/Creator code and a resource fork are often needed, and on more modern systems there are other challenges that need to be addressed. This paper explores some popular formats and tools that are needed to properly assess and capture …

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use has been linked with increases in sexually transmitted infection (STI) incidence. Despite efforts to expand PrEP uptake among young Black and Hispanic men who have sex with men (YBHMSM), little research has been done to understand the impact of PrEP on STI incidence within these communities. We examine the effect of PrEP use on gonorrhea and chlamydia (NG/CT) incidence, condom use, and external STI testing (ie, outside of study visits).
METHODS: In a longitudinal cohort of HIV-negative YBHMSM (ages 16-24 years), we modeled the effect of PrEP use on study-external STI testing and number …

Modern power systems increasingly rely on variable renewable energy sources, supported by energy storage systems and gas power plants, to meet decarbonization targets. However, the high penetration of renewables introduces significant uncertainty due to their weather-dependent nature, posing challenges to system reliability. This paper proposes a probabilistic, multi-level generation expansion planning framework that integrates reliability assessments, with a particular emphasis on the role of energy storage systems. A novel probabilistic approach is also introduced to model the Dunkelflaute phenomenon and evaluate its impact on system reliability. Additionally, the study explores the influence of regulatory mechanisms — referred to as embedded …

Wettability is critical in determining carbon dioxide (CO2) behavior during geological sequestration in unconventional reservoirs. Unconventional reservoirs are compositionally heterogeneous, affecting CO2 plume migration, containment security, and storage capacity during geological sequestration. Previous studies on CO2 storage in unconventional reservoirs have primarily attributed to changes in organic matter content; however, this study examines how variations in the mineralogical and organic matter content combined affect wettability in CO2/brine systems under subsurface conditions. Three samples with varied mineralogy and TOC content were selected from a well drilled in Jordan source rocks—an immature analog of marine-derived, carbonate-dominated, Type IIS source rocks. Samples were …
