This paper deals with studying the data completion problem for enhancing the image classification task under the pixel removal scenario. In some applications, it happens that a part of the pixels of a given image is lost due to several issues, such as corruption by outliers or artifacts and/or incompleteness due to imprecise data acquisition. This issue results in a completely wrong classification outcome using Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). In this paper we investigate the benefit of data completion in enhancing the classification accuracy of the DNN models to build more robust and stable DNN models. To this end, we …

The Volume And Characteristics Of Research On Gastrointestinal Symptoms In ‘Natural’ Peri- And Postmenopause:: A Scoping Review, Naomi Shaw, Rebecca Abbott, Clare Pettinger

School of Health Professions

BACKGROUND: Menopause has been linked to an array of symptoms, often with adverse effects on quality of life, work and relationships. Despite evidence of economic and social impacts, and a growing population of menopausal individuals, there are significant gaps in knowledge regarding menopause. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in peri- and postmenopause are areas of uncertainty that warrant further investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Following JBI guidance, this scoping review aimed to systematically map research on GI symptoms in 'natural' peri- and postmenopause, exploring the volume and conduct of research, and variables investigated that could influence symptom experience.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies assessing GI symptoms (constipation, …

The Future Of Nonprofit Regulation In The United States: Three Dynamic Trends, Lloyd H. Mayer Oct 2025

The Future Of Nonprofit Regulation In The United States: Three Dynamic Trends, Lloyd H. Mayer

Journal Articles

Nonprofit regulation in the United States is strongly influenced by society-wide political trends. This influence is especially evident today with respect to racial justice debates, partisan political divides, and significant changes in federal tax law. This commentary explores both how these trends are already affecting nonprofit regulation and how they might affect nonprofit regulation in the near future.

Mentoring programs are popular interventions to support holistic development for young people. One specific model of mentoring that has emerged over the past few decades in the United States is professional mentoring. Research has illustrated that this model of mentoring may be particularly helpful for young people who could benefit from extra support in their lives that a volunteer mentoring program does not have the capacity to provide. Despite the emerging utilization of professional mentoring programs, little is known about the ideal characteristics of a professional mentor and young people's experiences in these professional mentoring programs. This study interviewed 12 …

Must A Consumption Tax Be Regressive?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Oct 2025

Must A Consumption Tax Be Regressive?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers once explained why the United States is the only developed country that has not yet adopted a value-added tax: “Liberals think it’s regressive and conservatives think it’s a money machine.... If they reverse their positions, the VAT may happen.” It is true that the VAT is a money machine. It has been estimated that each percentage point of a broad-based U.S. VAT would raise $100 billion each year. This means that a 10 percent VAT (which may be politically possible) would raise $1 trillion each year, and a 25 percent VAT (less likely, but equal …

All Decisions

A landlord initiated a holdover proceeding, alleging occupants were licensees. The tenants moved to dismiss, contending they were tenants at sufferance or at will, thus requiring a 30-day notice of termination under RPL § 228, not the 10-day notice served. The landlord argued a prior Appellate Division decision, which found tenants were not rent-stabilized, estopped this claim. The court disagreed, holding that prior findings did not preclude the tenants from arguing non-licensee status. Recognizing the tenants had exclusive possession, the court determined they were improperly classified as licensees, rendering the 10-day notice insufficient and dismissing the petition without prejudice.

Genetic Characterization And High-Resolution Total Mrna Sequencing Of The Millipede Cherokia Georgiana Bollman, 1889, Elena Cruz

Biology Theses

There are approximately 12,000 described species within the class Diplopoda. Only six species, falling within four of sixteen orders, have fully sequenced genomes. No whole genomes are available for incredibly diverse families like Xystodesmidae. Many interesting characteristics in this group are poorly defined at the genetic level, such as the production of a defensive hydrogen cyanide secretion and UV fluorescence in the order Polydesmida. Here, we present a genetic characterization of the polydesmid millipede Cherokia georgiana Bollman, 1889. We include tissue-specific sequencing metrics, alignment and assembly of mitochondrial DNA consensus sequence according to tissue type, and phylogenetic tree construction using …

Mesothelin (MSLN) is a tumor biomarker expressed at high levels on the surface of numerous cancers with extremely limited expression in healthy tissues. MSLN-targeting agents developed for diagnosis and therapy could have a significant impact on the management of MSLN-expressing cancers. Pleural mesothelioma (PM) is a deadly cancer that arises from mesothelial cells lining the pleura and is predominantly linked to asbestos exposure. There are currently no effective treatments, and diagnosis occurs in late stages of disease due to the lack of clinical symptoms in the early stages. Recent efforts to diagnose and treat PM have focused on identifying and …

Ktrb-Mediated Alkaline Adaptation Drives Enterococcus Faecalis Persistence In The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Helicoverpa Zea, Patrick J. Hurd, Vivian Veto, Geneva Bell, Jerreme J. Jackson

Faculty Publications

Enterococcus faecalis is a commensal enteric bacterium capable of surviving in extreme and diverse environments. Here, we characterized the role of the gene ntpJ, which encodes the KtrB subunit of the KtrAB Na+/K+ symporter, during the adaptation of E. faecalis to alkaline stress and persistence in Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm). We assessed growth kinetics, biofilm formation, surface adhesion, and gastrointestinal persistence in vivo using an E. faecalis OG1RF mariner transposon mutant (ntpJ-Tn). The ntpJ-Tn mutant showed delayed entry into mid-log phase growth and biofilm formation under standard and alkaline-adjusted conditions relative to the wild-type strain, while adherence …

Deficits In Motion And Form Perception In Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome, Mahesh Joshi, Asma Zahidi Oct 2025

Deficits In Motion And Form Perception In Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome, Mahesh Joshi, Asma Zahidi

School of Health Professions

Purpose: Visual deficits in infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) could be a result of retinal blur from excessive eye movements and/or cortical changes from visual deprivation. We measured global motion and form sensitivity in INS to compare deficits between motion and form perception and to decipher the role of internal noise (local deficit such as eye movement) and sampling efficiency (global cortical deficit). Methods: A total of 30 participants (14.40 ± 4.83 years) with INS and 30 age-matched controls discriminated the direction of motion and orientation of physically equivalent translational random dot kinematograms (RDKs) and Glass patterns. Both stimuli consisted of 240 …

Pediatric Vs Adult Invasive Aspergillosis In Cancer And Hematopoietic Transplant Patients: Insights From A Matched Cohort At A Tertiary Cancer Center, Saliba Wehbe, Ramia Zakhour, Ray Hachem, Ying Jiang, Hiba Dagher, Roseen Salman, Anne-Marie Chaftari, Issam I Raad

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening infection in immunocompromised patients, including those with hematologic malignancies and hematopoietic stem cell transplants. While adult IA has been well characterized, data on pediatric populations remain limited, and potential age-related differences are often overlooked in current management guidelines.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective matched cohort study at a tertiary cancer center, evaluating IA cases diagnosed over a 31-year period. Pediatric patients (≤18 years) with proven or probable IA were matched 1:3 with adult IA cases based on year of diagnosis, underlying disease, and history of hematopoietic cell transplantation. We compared demographics, clinical presentation, …

Challenging Truth, Exploring Fluidity, And Reclaiming Bodily Autonomy Through Revisited Personal Narratives, Peyton Lane Sibert Oct 2025

Challenging Truth, Exploring Fluidity, And Reclaiming Bodily Autonomy Through Revisited Personal Narratives, Peyton Lane Sibert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

This dissertation explores and analyzes revisited personal narratives, which I define as layering perspectives or theorizing upon previously presented narratives. Specifically, I argue that revisited personal narratives are uniquely positioned to not only explore the intricacies of fluidity and truth within narrative but also deepen the insight into the perspectives of marginalized identities, thereby aiding in the deconstruction of cisheteronormativity and the reclaiming of autonomy—both bodily and narrative. Bodily autonomy refers to the freedom and ability to make choices about one’s own body and identity, including the right to not have one’s body violated, the right to access healthcare, the …

Cd5 Expression In Ctcl And Its Implications For Anti-Cd5 Car T-Cell Therapy, Leena Wardeh, Madeline Williams, Courtney Prestwood, Zachary Wolner, Neda Nikbakht

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphomas (CTCL) are a heterogenous group of T-cell malignancies in the skin and have poor treatment outcomes in advanced stages. CD5, a surface glycoprotein expressed on most mature T cells, has emerged as a promising target for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy in systemic T-cell lymphomas. However, its expression profile in CTCL and relevance for targeted therapy remain unclear. Notably, in CTCL, the cell surface expression of receptors, such as CD7 and CD26, tends to become downregulated on the surfaces of malignant T cells In this study, we analyzed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from patients at …

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rice cultivated under furrow irrigation faces weed management challenges due to the aerobic conditions that favor the emergence of terrestrial weeds such as Palmer amaranth. Fluridone was recently registered for use in rice production, offering an alternative site of action for Palmer amaranth control. Four site-years of field experiments were conducted in 2022 and 2023 in furrow-irrigated rice to assess Palmer amaranth control and crop tolerance to fluridone applied preemergence alone or with various postemergence treatments. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with a split-plot arrangement and four replications. The whole-plot factor was the postemergence treatment, while the …

Evaluating Sustainability Research In Argentine Higher Education, María Belén Arias Valle, Frederic Marimon Dr.

Higher Learning Research Communications

This study analyzes the integration of sustainability into the research activities of Argentine higher education institutions (HEIs), both public and private. Through a quantitative approach, 132 HEIs were evaluated regarding the presence of sustainability research lines, the inclusion of this topic in strategic plans, and the existence of specialized institutes and academic publications. The results indicate that only 26% of HEIs have established research lines on sustainability, with greater participation from public universities. However, the overall commitment is uneven, with only 55% of institutions including sustainability in their strategic plans. The limited presence of observatories, specialized journals, and research centers …

A Narrative Review Of Evidence, Safety, And Clinical Considerations In Taxane Chemotherapy For Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer, Jenny W. Zhang, Precious Ochuwa Imokhai, Danny Lee, Diana Hamdan, Trisha Mahajan, Satyam K. Singh, Amanda Brooks

Student Publications

The medical condition of pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) requires oncologists to determine the best way to protect both the mother and the fetus during cancer treatment. The safety profile of taxanes, including paclitaxel and docetaxel, in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy remains unclear despite well-established anthracycline-based regimens (e.g., doxorubicin). High-risk breast cancer subtypes such as triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) and human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2)-positive disease require taxane chemotherapy as standard treatment in nonpregnant patients. Objective: This paper aims to gather available data about the safety, timing and fetal outcomes related to taxane chemotherapy during PABC, …

Cross-Model Watermarking Via Discriminative Samples For Secure Authentication, Juan Zhao, Yudao Sun, Zhihai Yang, Cai Xu, Hongji Chen, Fan Zhang, Jianxin Li

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Deep neural networks on cloud platforms face growing security threats, with AI services increasingly relying on heterogeneous models for the same task to meet diverse user needs. Existing methods fail to distinguish benign modifications from malicious attacks in cross-model scenarios. To address this challenge, we propose a non-intrusive cross-model watermarking method that generates discriminative samples as universal keys, enabling authentication without altering model parameters or architectures. Specifically, we introduce a margin enhancement loss to amplify confidence gaps between benign and malicious behaviors, ensuring high transferability across models. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate the high efficacy of our proposed …
