Background: Most countries now have physical activity (PA) policies but translating them into action at national and subnational levels remains poor. To better understand the disconnect, the "Interaction between National and Local Government Levels in Development and Implementation of Physical Activity Policies Tool" (INTEGRATE-PA-Pol) was developed by the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!).
Methods: The Czech Republic was chosen as a European pilot site based on existing research capacity and relationships. The INTEGRATE-PA-Pol tool was translated and adapted for use in the country. This questionnaire-based tool has 8 components assessing government levels, political system, and sectors across the 5 …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Association Between E-Cigarette Use Contexts And Alcohol Use Problems Among College Students, Tzung-Shiang Ou, Anne Buu, James J Yang, Hsien-Chang Lin
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Objective: Previous studies had explored the associations between e-cigarette use and alcohol use problems, yet they did not fully consider e-cigarette use contexts. This longitudinal study conducted a prospective examination of e-cigarette use contexts and alcohol use problems among college students.
Participants: College e-cigarette users at three public universities from Fall 2019 to Fall 2020 were included (N = 377).
Methods: A linear mixed model with a random intercept and random slope was employed to examine the longitudinal associations.
Results: Higher frequencies of e-cigarette use (β = 0.38, p < 0.001), being hooked on e-cigarettes (β = 0.96, p < 0.01), using e-cigarettes for socializing purposes (β = 0.58, p < 0.05), and more occasions of co-using e-cigarettes with alcohol (β …

An Update On Non-Cigarette Nicotine-Containing Products And The Periodontal Patient, Brendan Keeney D.D.S., Ryan Schure Dds, Msc, Frcd
The New York State Dental Journal
The adverse general and oral health effects from traditional cigarette smoking are supported by decades of research. However, the use of cigarettes in the United States is on the decline, and current research and literature is relatively lacking with respect to novel nicotine consumption methods. Given the increasing and significant use of non-cigarette nicotine-containing products, such as electronic cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches and hookah pipes, attention from oral healthcare providers is warranted. An understanding of the potential negative periodontal outcomes related to these newer nicotine delivery systems is crucial to properly educating and treating patients today.

Water (H2O) is one of the most abundant molecules in the universe and is found in a wide variety of astrophysical environments. Rotational transitions in H2O + H2O collisions are important for modeling environments rich in water molecules but they are computationally intractable using quantum mechanical methods. Here, we present a machine learning (ML) tool using an ensemble of neural networks (NNs) to predict cross sections to construct a database of rate coefficients for rotationally inelastic transitions in collisions of complex molecules such as water. The proposed methodology utilizes data computed with a mixed …

Shoplifting In The Us: Problems, Progress, And The Path Forward, Alan Saquella
Publications
Shoplifting has moved from a manageable nuisance to an urgent threat across the U.S. In large metropolitan and suburban markets alike, retailers, communities, and law enforcement are grappling with increasingly sophisticated theft both opportunistic and organized. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), retail theft (including organized retail crime) cost U.S. businesses nearly $112 billion in 2022. The consequences ripple beyond balance sheets: consumers face higher prices, employees confront increased risk, and some communities lose storefronts that cannot survive persistent losses.

Buy Better: How Food Policy Councils Leverage Procurement To Improve Food Worker Conditions, Frank Sarfo, Laura-Anne Minkoff-Zern, Jonnell A. Robinson
The Lender Center for Social Justice
Food system workers; farm laborers, grocery clerks, restaurant staff, and food processors are the backbone of our everyday meals, yet their voices are largely missing from the councils that shape local food policy. Despite being essential to food security and community health, these workers face low wages, poorworking conditions, and limited protections. Food Policy Councils (FPCs), which aim to advance equity and sustainability in food systems, rarely prioritize labor issues. The study, drawing on national survey data and interviews with over 25 FPC leaders, finds that structural constraints, internal conflicts, limited capacity, and weak connections with labor organizations prevent meaningful …

Do Underserved And Underrepresented Minorities Pay A Higher Premium For Employer-Sponsored Coverage?, Willie Reddic, Susan Albring, Patricia Crawford
The Lender Center for Social Justice
Employer-sponsored health insurance covers millions of Americans under 65, yet not all employees share the financial burden equally. This brief explores how underserved communities particularly Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native employees often pay a disproportionately high share of their income toward family coverage premiums. Drawing on national data and recent research, the study highlights systemic disparities in healthcare costs and access, that shows economic, social, and policy factors intersect to create uneven burdens. The importance of clear communication, tailored support tools, and equitable plan design to help employees make informed choices, while offering practical strategies for employers and entrepreneurs …

Theory Of Mind Across Cultures: Psychological Implications, Lewis Hancock, Simon Dein
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Theory of Mind (ToM) refers to a set of social and cognitive abilities that we use to infer and understand other people’s mental states. This paper begins by outlining ToM, its component skills, and what research methods have been used to measure it. It then summarises research on how culture and other social factors such as language, parenting, and socio-economic status can impact its development, in particular differences in age of mastery of various aspects of ToM. Mental disorders characterised by deficits in ToM – in particular ASD – are also discussed and used to elucidate its nature and development. …

Following the Delaware Court of Chancery's invalidation of Elon Musk's fifty-six-billion-dollar compensation package, Tesla moved its incorporation from Delaware to Texas. Shortly thereafter, Delaware's legislature, seeking to protect Delaware's dominant incorporation position, passed the most sweeping corporate law amendments in fifty years.
Both supporters of Musk and defenders of Delaware's judiciary have accused each other of partisanship, but neither side has addressed the central question: What is the role of specialized corporate courts?
This Essay presents a novel theory of why such courts are necessary. Corporate disputes are distinct because they arise within ongoing relationships between shareholders and management, governed …

K–5 Teachers’ Perceptions Toward Implementing An Lgbtqia+-Inclusive Curriculum In New Jersey, Stephanie J. Faille
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is the gap in literature about K–5 teachers’ challenges in implementing an LGBTQIA+-inclusive curriculum in New Jersey. Grounded in Fuller’s concerns of teachers framework and Foucault’s seminal work on the historical treatment of members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore K–5 teachers’ challenges in implementing an LGBTQIA+-inclusive curriculum in New Jersey. Purposeful and snowball sampling were used to recruit 11 K–5 teachers who self-identified as having implemented the New Jersey LGBTQIA+-inclusive curriculum. Data collected through semistructured interviews were analyzed using a priori codes in …

Patient-Informed Fluid-Structure Interaction Simulations Of Bicuspid Aortic Valve In Young Adults Reveal Regionalized Differences In Mechanical Stress, Hail B. Kazik, Harkamaljot S. Kandail, Joy Lincoln, John F. Ladisa
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiovascular defect characterized by two, rather than three, cusps. Many BAV patients prematurely develop calcification and aortic stenosis by age 35, which is more severe with fusion of the right and noncoronary (RC/NC) cusps. The mechanisms underlying calcification observed within the coaptation, attachment, and fusion regions of BAV patients are unknown. While abnormal mechanical stimuli induced by the bicuspid anatomy likely plays a role, little is known about regionalized mechanical stimuli in these susceptible cusp regions of young patients prior to calcification. Strongly coupled fluid-structure interaction simulations were conducted using physiologic boundary …

These Dentists Have A Story To Tell; What's Yours?, Rich Evans
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Every dentist has his or her own story to tell when it comes to personal and practice success. Each is different, of course, but a recurring theme is how membership in the MDA, ADA, and their local society seems to help them succeed. They find that practice life is somehow better — more rewarding — with membership. Many will tell you that being a member makes them a more satisfied, more grounded professional. In this issue we present the stories of four MDA members who discovered how MDA membership gives them many advantages in their personal and professional lives.

Use Of Prophylaxis For Deep Venous Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism In Isolated Foot And Ankle Trauma, Regina Hansen, Alexander P. Rader, Naohiro Shibuya, Daniel C. Jupiter
School of Podiatric Medicine Publications
Background: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are relatively rare after foot and ankle surgery, especially after trauma. Diagnosing DVT is difficult, and even when it is discovered it does not necessarily clinically manifest on, for example, duplex ultrasound. Thus, it is often recommended that prophylaxis use be assessed on a case-by-case basis based on risk profile rather than being uniformly given or not prescribed.
Methods: We searched the National Trauma Data Bank Trauma Quality Programs Participant Use File for patients experiencing foot and ankle trauma from 2013 to 2017. Patients were identified using the International Classification of …

Poking Holes And Adding Points In Dictator Games, James C. Cox, Cary Deck, Laura Razzolini, Vjollca Sadiraj
ESI Working Papers
Deviations from choices predicted by self-regarding preferences have regularly been observed in standard dictator games. Such behavior is not inconsistent with conventional preference theory or revealed preference theory, which accommodate other-regarding preferences. By contrast, experiments in which giving nothing is not the least generous feasible act produce data that is inconsistent with conventional preference theory including social preference models and suggest the possible relevance of reference point models. Two such models are the reference-dependent theory of riskless choice with loss aversion and choice monotonicity in moral reference points. Our experiment includes novel treatments designed to challenge both theoretical models of …

Virtual friends and lovers powered by artificial intelligence are rapidly moving to the center of our emotional and social lives. Millions of people turn to AI companions every day for conversation, romance, sexual intimacy, therapy, and education. AI companionship holds promise, potentially reducing loneliness, supporting people without access to mental health treatment, helping students learn, and offering a judgment-free space for sensitive conversations. But AI companionship also raises significant concerns. The technology's addictiveness may exacerbate loneliness and can undermine human relationships. Therapy bots may prove more harmful than helpful. AI companions can be emotionally abusive. And their access to the …

This article traces renewed constitutional challenges to the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), placing them in historical and doctrinal context. Contemporary attacks — advanced by major corporations and the Trump Administration — revive the constitutional conflicts of the 1930s. Drawing on arguments rooted in the unitary executive theory, as well as Article III and the Seventh Amendment, the current challenges threaten not only the NLRB’s independence but the broader administrative state and the system of labor rights it sustains. At stake is more than institutional design: the dispute reflects a deeper contest over …

The focus of this article is the 2022–2024 Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative undertaken the U.S. Executive Branch. The article chronicles this three-year process, which included sessions with survivors and their descendants, and which resulted in a two-volume report, in an apology by President Joe Biden, and in designation of a national memorial at one of the most notorious school sites. This article examines the initiative as an example of “child-taking justice”; that is, as a process of what is called “transitional justice”, done in an effort to redress the takings of children from their community, followed by efforts to …

AI systems are testing lawyers' professional ethics obligations of competence, confidentiality, and candor. In the legal profession, the widespread availability of AI systems presents opportunities, like improving the review of documents during the discovery stage of a lawsuit, and challenges, illustrated by the handful of high-profile incidents where lawyers submitted legal briefs in court citing and describing fictitious cases based on AI-generated output. We conducted interviews with 44 legal professionals in the U.S. to understand how attorneys are making sense of AI technology and the impacts these technologies are having on their profession, legal ethics, and legal institutions.
