Infection leads to durable cell-autonomous changes in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), resulting in production of innate immune cells with heightened immunity. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, termed central trained immunity, remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that infection induces histone modifications leading to changes in chromatin accessibility that are conserved during differentiation from HSPCs to myeloid progenitors and monocytes. We conducted genome-wide surveillance of histone marks H3K27ac and H3K4me3 and chromatin accessibility in hematopoietic stem cells, multipotent progenitor 3, granulocyte-monocyte progenitors, monocytes and macrophages of naïve and Mycobacterium avium infected mice. Interferon signaling pathways and related transcription factor binding …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which emerged in late 2019 and was first detected in Indonesia in March 2020, has significantly reshaped the country’s public health landscape. Aside from the viral outbreak itself, a decline in immunity among the population due to excessive concern about the pandemic has also become a significant issue. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of myricetin, phyllanthin, and luteolin compounds as inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) virus by targeting the main protease and spike glycoprotein receptor-binding domain proteins through in silico molecular docking. Remdesivir and favipiravir were used as comparison …

The development of biorenewable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) chemistry has generated interest in crotonate-based monomers as versatile building blocks. Crotonates can be obtained through the pyrolysis of PHAs, offering both a sustainable end-of-life pathway for PHAs and a renewable route to crotonate monomers. This study presents a new polyaddition-type step-growth polymerization of dicrotonates in which alkene-functionalized polyesters are synthesized using potassium tert-butoxide as a simple base catalyst. The reaction proceeds rapidly at room temperature, achieving >99% conversion within seconds and requiring no byproduct removal. The properties of the resulting polyesters can be tuned via the choice of bridging diol, and the materials …

Fruits have a relatively short shelf life. One of the extensively researched preservation methods for fruits is edible coating. Edible coating is a method of coating food products with a polymer layer. Considering the environmental and sustainability aspects, edible coatings were synthesized from biodegradable polymers derived from polysaccharides. Chitosan is a widely developed and researched type of biopolymer due to its antimicrobial activity. In addition to antimicrobial activity, antioxidant properties are important in food packaging applications. Mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) contain various secondary metabolites that play a role in antioxidant activity, such as mangiferin, gallic acid, flavonoids, and gallotanin. …

Background
Violence against women and against children are human rights violations with lasting harms to survivors and societies at large. Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual violence against children (SVAC) are two major forms of such abuse. Despite their wide-reaching effects on individual and community health, these risk factors have not been adequately prioritised as key drivers of global health burden. Comprehensive x§and reliable estimates of the comparative health burden of IPV and SVAC are urgently needed to inform investments in prevention and support for survivors at both national and global levels.
Methods
We estimated the prevalence and attributable burden …
Exploring The Role Of Human Pioneer Factors On Hiv Transcription Through Rna Interference Screening, Zachary Comella
Exploring The Role Of Human Pioneer Factors On Hiv Transcription Through Rna Interference Screening, Zachary Comella
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present
Per the World Health Organization, approximately 40 million individuals live with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) worldwide. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) against HIV limits viral replication but does not eradicate the virus. This is mainly due to the presence of long lived CD4+ T cells harboring transcriptionally silenced integrated proviruses, hidden from the immune system, which are, however, ready to reinitiate a spreading infection as soon as treatment is interrupted. To develop novel strategies to block virus reactivation without treatment, a deep understanding of host factors contributing to HIV transcriptional regulation is needed. Pioneer factors (PFs) are a unique type of …

Adolescent Children’S Risk Of Long Covid-19 Syndrome Based On Diet And Demographic Factors From An Online Survey, Christopher Waskewich
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Limited information is available on how coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has [JG1] affected adolescents regarding long-term health risks. This quantitative study focused on the effect of U.S. adolescents’ daily diet, race/ethnicity, levels of income, family level of education, access to health care, age, and comorbidities on the risks of long COVID-19 syndrome. I used the constructs of the health belief model to understand the impact of those variables. The online survey results (N = 298) found that adolescents whose daily vegetable consumption was more than daily recommendations (2–3 cups) had a lower odds ratio of having long COVID-19 syndrome …

98% of T cells reside in tissues, yet nearly all human T cell analyses are performed on peripheral blood. We performed single-cell sequencing of 5.7 million T cells from autologous blood and tonsils of ten donors. We identified distinct patterns of clonal expansion associated with tonsil-restricted phenotypes. Clonal sharing between blood and tonsils was lower than previous estimates and increased with age. Identical T cell receptor (TCR) sequences exhibited limited concordance in their phenotypes across compartments. Furthermore, location dictated the frequencies, clonal dominance, and phenotypes of antigen-specific T cells. Using immune organoids, we showed that antigen exposure drives functionally distinct …

Is Hockey Still Canada’S Game? How Usa Teams Have Won Every Stanley Cup Since 1994, Aaron Montgomery, Long Doan, Joe Demaio, Michael Frankel
Symposium of Student Scholars
The last Canadian team to win Lord Stanley’s cup in the National Hockey League was the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Since then, each championship has been claimed by a team geographically located in the United States. Is this streak unusual? Perhaps it is particularly unusual in light of the fact that Hockey is known as Canada’s game. Is Hockey in its modern incarnation still Canada’s game? Given the long history of the NHL should we expect such a streak to occur at some point in time? Are we too fixated on the geographic location of the teams in question? Perhaps …

What if a bridge could be more than just a means of crossing from one point to another? What if it could become a place of gathering, reflection, and connection between people and their city? The Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge in Tehran, Iran, challenges conventional ideas of infrastructure by transforming a simple crossing into a dynamic public space that celebrates structure, culture, and community. Completed by Leila Araghian and Alireza Behzadi of Diba Tensile Architecture, the Tabiat Pedestrian Bridge received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016. The bridge represents a shift in how infrastructure can serve urban life, not …
The Evolution And Impact Of The Token Black Friend Trope In American Media, Sophie E. Rice, Kurt Milberger
The Evolution And Impact Of The Token Black Friend Trope In American Media, Sophie E. Rice, Kurt Milberger
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
This research explores the history of the token Black friend trope in American media and how these misrepresentations continue to influence popular culture and negatively impact Black Americans. Historically, the token Black friend stereotype singles out Black characters to fill gaps in the plot through comedy, intelligence, or self-sacrifice, all while being excluded from the white protagonist’s larger narrative. The prevalence of this trope is apparent through several contemporary and classic examples, which are used to evaluate the effects of the token Black friend trope on American culture. To deconstruct these misrepresentations, this essay supplements these examples with scholarship …
