The Relative Strength Of Justice-Related Satisfaction, Posttraumatic Maladaptive Beliefs, And Self-Compassion In Predicting Perceived Control Over Stressful Events, Katherine Mooney Aug 2026

The Relative Strength Of Justice-Related Satisfaction, Posttraumatic Maladaptive Beliefs, And Self-Compassion In Predicting Perceived Control Over Stressful Events, Katherine Mooney

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Coercive control and domestic violence perpetrated by men against women are global social problems sustained by patriarchal norms that normalize gender-based violence. These norms often contribute to victims' maladaptive self-beliefs, leading women to believe they provoked the abuse. When survivors seek legal protection, they may experience revictimization through legal processes that minimize their claims and enable perpetrators to continue exerting power and control through the justice system. As a result, dissatisfaction with the legal system may reinforce self-blame, while low self-compassion may further undermine women's perceived control over stressful events in both the short and long term. While previous research …

Strings Attached: Science Regulation By Science Funders, Nicholson W. Price Ii Aug 2026

Strings Attached: Science Regulation By Science Funders, Nicholson W. Price Ii

Reviews

Who regulates the physical and informational risks of scientific research? Who makes sure that researchers keep intensely personal data secret, or lock their dangerous chemicals away safely, or don't haphazardly create superviruses that could kill us all? You could be forgiven for assuming it was, well, a regulator—OSHA or the CDC or some similar entity that can promulgate binding rules and enforce them. But as Doni Bloomfield shows in the fascinating How Science Grantmakers Govern, you’d be (mostly) wrong. Instead, a key substantive and procedural regulator of the risky business of scientific research is, in fact, the funder of that …

Postmodern Fantasy & Its Twin Traditions, Skyler J. Alexander Aug 2026

Postmodern Fantasy & Its Twin Traditions, Skyler J. Alexander

Honors Thesis

Fantasy literature is diverse and difficult to categorize; nevertheless, throughout the twentieth century two main subgenres emerged: sword-and-sorcery and high fantasy. This thesis examines the differences and similarities between these two traditions, how contemporary examples of the genre fit into or diverge away from the traditions that influenced them, and proves in the negative what and how much of contemporary fantasy fiction is original to itself, with no prominent antecedent. The analysis was performed by comparatively reading two contemporary fantasy novels, The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan and A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, with …

Mitigation Of The Seductive Details Effect In Children, Allison S. Dobuler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The present thesis examines if interspersing guiding questions between sections of an expository text can mitigate the seductive details effect, in which the addition of interesting but tangentially related information to the base text may hinder the ability to learn the essential material, for typically developing children. Participants were given two passages to read, one with seductive details and one without. They either had no guiding questions for both passages or guiding questions interspersed between the text of both passages. They were given retention and comprehension assessments for both passages. While the guiding questions did not mitigate the seductive details …

Emergency Reinfusion Of Vaginally Salvaged Red Cells After Vacuum-Assisted Vaginal Delivery In A Jehovah's Witness: A Case Report, William Hughes Aug 2026

Emergency Reinfusion Of Vaginally Salvaged Red Cells After Vacuum-Assisted Vaginal Delivery In A Jehovah's Witness: A Case Report, William Hughes

Peninsula Medical School

Perinatal blood management is critical for all obstetric patients as peripartum haemorrhage is common, unpredictable, and consequences can be severe. Patients who do not consent to allogeneic transfusion of blood products introduce additional complexity and are at greater risk of morbidity and mortality. There is growing evidence that reinfusion of autologous blood salvaged from vaginal deliveries is safe and can be lifesaving. Delivering this potentially lifesaving care requires that staff well trained in intraoperative cell salvage are always resident on the delivery suite, and that the delivery suite multidisciplinary team is familiar with the procedure. Here we present a case …
