Monitoring The Response Of Herpetofauna And Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola To Longleaf Pine Restoration, Samuel Mccabe Robinson
Monitoring The Response Of Herpetofauna And Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola To Longleaf Pine Restoration, Samuel Mccabe Robinson
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
The combination of habitat loss and disease has dramatically reduced wildlife populations globally. Given this, widespread habitat restoration and monitoring is needed to conserve vulnerable populations. In recent decades, there have been efforts to restore longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forests across its historic range. Simultaneously, a fungal pathogen known to infect snakes, Ophidiomyces ophidiicola (Oo), has been detected throughout the eastern United States. In this study, I investigated how herpetofauna in the William B. Bankhead National Forest responded to longleaf pine restoration while monitoring for the presence of Oo across a gradient of habitat types, species, and individual characteristics. From …
Building Our Own Curriculum: Black Women’S Stories Of Higher Education Leadership Development, Sabrina Louise Brown
Building Our Own Curriculum: Black Women’S Stories Of Higher Education Leadership Development, Sabrina Louise Brown
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Despite increasing attention to gender equity in higher education leadership, Black women remain disproportionately underrepresented in senior administrative roles. Women's Leadership Development Programs (WLDPs) emerged to cultivate leadership talent, yet often reflect race-evasive, gender-centered frameworks that marginalize Black women's intersectional experiences. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Black women who participated in a women-only higher education leadership development program in North Carolina. Guided by Black Feminist Thought and Endarkened Feminist Epistemology, this research centered Black women's knowledge systems and ways of knowing as legitimate sources of insight and resistance. Through interviews with eight Black women who completed the …
Factors Influencing Rural Teachers To Stay In The Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Marti Elizabeth Lomax
Factors Influencing Rural Teachers To Stay In The Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Marti Elizabeth Lomax
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
The problem was teacher attrition was a pressing problem in the United States. The National Center for Education Statistics (2023) reported that 40% to 50% of teachers exited the profession within 5 years of commencing their careers which influenced the quality and consistency of education provided to rural students. The purpose was to explore how teachers felt about remaining on the job in rural classrooms in Southern Middle Tennessee. There was little research that investigated these teachers’ experiences regarding remaining in the profession. The study was guided by a basic qualitative design (Quick, 2024). The sample was six teachers selected …

Teacher Perceptions On Commitment To Teaching In High-Poverty Urban Middle Schools, Ruth Michelle Hayslett
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
This explanatory sequential mixed methods study examined teacher perceptions of factors influencing retention in high-poverty urban middle schools within Metro Nashville Public Schools. The research addressed the critical issue of teacher turnover in challenging educational environments, where retention rates significantly impact student outcomes. The study surveyed 68 teachers from five high-poverty middle schools, followed by in-depth interviews with six participants. Using Herzberg's Two-Factor Motivation Theory as the theoretical framework, the research investigated four key areas: intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, professional development, and demographic factors affecting teacher commitment. Quantitative findings revealed that extrinsic factors demonstrated the strongest correlation with teacher commitment …

Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to examine the perceptions and experiences of high school teachers and administrators, regarding the impact of disciplinary policies on African American males within an urban Middle Tennessee high school. The study focused on systemic, institutional, and cultural factors influencing how educators interpret their roles in either reinforcing or challenging the school-to-prison pipeline. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and document review. Findings revealed six major themes: Disproportionate Discipline, Importance of Relationships, Cultural Competency and Bias, Restorative Practices, Resource Gaps, and Need for Policy Reform. These findings demonstrated that disproportionate discipline, …
Role Of Cellular Stress Responses In Innate Immune Defense Against Acute Respiratory Infections, Amit Sharma
Role Of Cellular Stress Responses In Innate Immune Defense Against Acute Respiratory Infections, Amit Sharma
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress sensor inositol-requiring enzyme 1α (IRE1α) is an important regulator of innate immune cells. However, its role in pulmonary innate host defenses remains poorly understood. This dissertation elucidates the dual, context-dependent role of IRE1α in host defense against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) pneumonia. We demonstrate IRE1α’s function as both a detrimental mediator of acute pathology and an essential facilitator of innate immune memory. Our work revealed that acute IRE1α activation during primary MRSA infection is detrimental. In lungs and alveolar macrophages (AMs), IRE1α is activated in response to MRSA infection. Consequently, IRE1α activation triggers a hyperinflammatory …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Uganda are at higher risk for and bear a significant HIV burden, accounting for 25% of new infections. Despite improved HIV testing services, AGYW in rural areas face barriers to facility-based testing due to stigma, physical access barriers, and confidentiality concerns. This study assessed the acceptability, appropriateness, willingness to use, and perceptions of HIVST among AGYW in Northern Uganda.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was part of a baseline assessment for a quasi-experimental trial evaluating community-led HIVST among AGYW aged 15-24 years in 5 sub-counties in Omoro District. Data were collected using systematic …
Exploring The Autofermented Cyanobacterial Crude Extract As Antimicrobial Animal Feed Additives., Mohana Krishnan Neelakrishnan
Exploring The Autofermented Cyanobacterial Crude Extract As Antimicrobial Animal Feed Additives., Mohana Krishnan Neelakrishnan
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Overexploitation of antibiotics in the animal industry has driven the need for reduced usage, but this reduction has intensified the challenge posed by Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter jejuni to livestock systems and public health. This situation underlines the need for sustainable antimicrobial alternatives. Although cyanobacteria are promising in this respect, since they may produce a variety of bioactive metabolites, the amounts of these metabolites in their natural state are insufficient to elicit potent antibacterial action. In this study, autofermentation was investigated as a means of enhancing antibacterial efficacy in Fischerella ambigua and Nostoc muscorum by promoting the synthesis of organic …

ObjectiveCOVID-19 vaccine surveillance detected thrombotic thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a rare combination of thrombosis and thrombocytopenia, after COVID-19 vaccination. We evaluated TTS risk within 28 days of AZD1222 and BNT162b2 exposure.MethodsMatched case-control (MCCS) and self-controlled case series (SCCS) studies used Oxford-Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre data linked to immunisation, hospitalisation and death data. English patient records extracted from 2/12/2020 to 31/10/2022 were used to identify TTS cases and age, sex, and practice matched controls. Conditional logistic regression and conditional Poisson regression were used for MCCS and SCCS analyses, respectively.ResultsOf 666 TTS events identified, >90% happened without AZD1222/BNT162b2 …
A Review Of Cutaneous Viral Infections And Their Potential Role In Neurologic Diseases
A Review Of Cutaneous Viral Infections And Their Potential Role In Neurologic Diseases
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Cutaneous viral infections, defined as viral pathogens that either primarily affect the skin (e.g., herpesviruses, enteroviruses) or frequently produce dermatologic manifestations despite systemic tropism (e.g., HIV, SARS-CoV-2), can trigger systemic inflammatory and neurotropic responses that extend their impact to the nervous system. A growing body of evidence suggests that viruses with dermatologic manifestations may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of neurologic disorders.
Summary: Although individual viruses have been studied in isolation, the skin-brain axis in viral infections remains incompletely characterized. This review synthesizes existing knowledge and highlights gaps in understanding the mechanisms linking cutaneous viral infections to …
The Effects Of Applying Self-Regulated Learning Prompts On Academic Achievement In A Public Middle-School Science Classroom, Andrew Barham
The Effects Of Applying Self-Regulated Learning Prompts On Academic Achievement In A Public Middle-School Science Classroom, Andrew Barham
Doctoral Dissertations
Student success in science courses is a critical focus for K–12 educators, particularly during the transition period of middle-school, where students face increasing academic and social demands. Self-regulated learning (SRL) strategies have been shown to enhance academic outcomes by fostering independent learning and metacognitive awareness. However, research on the implementation and effectiveness of SRL interventions in middle school science classrooms, particularly within the constraints of public school settings, remains limited.
This study investigated the effects of an SRL intervention on the academic achievement of eighth-grade students during a six-week astronomy unit. Students from a public middle school in the San …

Variable expressivity of disease-associated variants implies a role for secondary variants that modify clinical features. We assessed the effects of modifier variants on the clinical outcomes of 2,455 individuals with primary variants. Among 124 families with the 16p12.1 deletion, distinct rare and common variant classes conferred risks for specific developmental features, including short tandem repeats for neurological defects. Network analysis suggested distinct mechanisms involving 16p12.1 genes and secondary variants specific to each proband. Within disease and population cohorts of 976 individuals with the 16p12.1 deletion, we found opposing effects of secondary variants on clinical features across ascertainments. Additional analysis of …
