Copyright, Incentives, And Popular Music Composition, Glynn S. Lunney Jr.
Copyright, Incentives, And Popular Music Composition, Glynn S. Lunney Jr.
Faculty Scholarship
The rise of file sharing and the subsequent collapse in sales of recorded music offer a rare glimpse into a counterfactual world where copyright, for a time, was weakened. Comparing creative output before and after this exogenous shock allows us to test empirically whether incentives to copyright owners were correlated with creative output. In this article, I extend previous work on this issue from recording artists to songwriters and search for a correlation between incentives and popular music composition. In particular, I test three hypotheses. First, I test whether more incentives were associated with more or better popular musical compositions. …
The Iron Pyramid: Expanding The Iron Triangle To Integrate Safety As A Fundamental Dimension Of Construction Success, Laura Cooley
The Iron Pyramid: Expanding The Iron Triangle To Integrate Safety As A Fundamental Dimension Of Construction Success, Laura Cooley
All Theses
For more than fifty years, construction project success has been judged by staying on schedule, remaining within budget, and completing the planned scope of work—an approach commonly known as the “Iron Triangle” (Barnes, Ph.D., 2006). While these measures are important, they do not capture the full range of factors that determine whether a project truly succeeds.
This study introduces the “Iron Pyramid” (Cooley, 2025), a model that expands the traditional framework by adding a fourth dimension: safety. Safety is understood not simply as regulatory compliance or the absence of injuries, but as a holistic construct encompassing project culture, leadership practices, …

Reliable-Data-Split (Rds): Maximizing Model Potential With Reinforced Selection Strategy, Hoang D. Nguyen, Xuan-Son Vu, Quoc Tuan Truong, Duc-Trong Le
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The nexus between data characteristics and parametric models is fundamental for developing effective and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Mismatches in data properties for model development may lead to deleterious effects on AI model performance in machine learning practice. This paper proposes a Reliable Data Split (RDS) procedure to learn how to select data points that will generalise the target domain adequately by employing prior knowledge of the data generative process. We introduce a reinforced selection strategy using deep reinforcement learning with diverse black box predictors in maximising ensemble rewards as the proxy of model performance potential while maintaining an …

Scalable Graph Indexing Using Gpus For Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search, Zhonggen Li, Xiangyu Ke, Yifan Zhu, Bocheng Yu, Baihua Zheng, Yunjun Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS) in high-dimensional vector spaces has a wide range of real-world applications. Numerous methods have been proposed to handle ANNS efficiently, while graph-based indexes have gained prominence due to their high accuracy and efficiency. However, the indexing overhead of graph-based indexes remains substantial. With exponential growth in data volume and increasing demands for dynamic index adjustments, this overhead continues to escalate, posing a critical challenge. In this paper, we introduce Tagore, a fasT library accelerated by GPUs for graph indexing, which has powerful capabilities of constructing refinement-based graph indexes such as NSG and Vamana. We first introduce …

Effective Transfer Of Tumor Annotations From Hematoxylin And Eosin To Fluorescence Images Of Breast And Lung Tissues, Tianling Niu, Emi Ampo, Julie M. Jorns, Mollie Patton, Tongtong Lu, Dong Hye Ye, Tina Yen, Bing Yu
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Significance: Accurate transfer of annotations from histological images to fluorescence images is essential in developing deep learning (DL)-based optical imaging systems for intraoperative assessment of tumor margins. Manual annotation is time-consuming, prone to interobserver variability, and impractical for large-scale datasets.
Aim: We present a semi-automated method that can effectively transfer tumor annotations from pathologist-annotated hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images to fluorescence images captured using microscopy with ultraviolet surface excitation (MUSE). This method is not intended for intraoperative use but rather to facilitate the creation of annotated datasets for DL model development.
Approach: Our semi-automated method consists of nonrigid image registration, …

Factors Influencing Employees’ Ai Adoption Intentions In Occupational Settings, Emma G. Wituk
All Theses
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a burgeoning technology whose development has many implications for organizations and employees. Using a modified version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework, this study tested performance expectancy (PE; the belief that AI will enhance personal job performance) and prior AI experience (EXP) as predictors of behavioral intention (BI) to use an AI coaching tool, Nadia. We expected both PE and EXP to be positively related to adoption intentions. Additionally, social influence (SI; respondent’s belief that other individuals think they should adopt AI) and facilitating conditions (FC; appropriate infrastructure and adequate …
Barriers To Mindfulness Training Among Athletes: A Transtheoretical Approach, Annabelle L. Thomas
Barriers To Mindfulness Training Among Athletes: A Transtheoretical Approach, Annabelle L. Thomas
All Theses
Mindfulness, originating from ancient Eastern traditions, involves developing intentional, nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment (Kabat-Zinn, 2012). In recent years, mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have gained recognition in Western contexts for improving both well-being and athletic performance (Hut et al., 2021). Despite growing evidence for the benefits, many athletes still do not engage in mindfulness training. Common barriers include limited time (Gao et al., 2024), stigma (De Petrillo et al., 2009), lack of structure (Bühlmayer et al., 2017; Weber et al., 2023), and doubts about effectiveness (Augustus & Zizzi, 2022). This study examined these barriers among NCAA Division I and club …

Environmental Sanitation In Long-Term Care Facilities: A Focus On Regulations And Implementations, Ruwan Dissanayake Dissanayake Mudiyanselage
All Theses
Environmental sanitation is a fundamental component of infection prevention in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), where residents are at increased risk due to advanced age, underlying health conditions, and communal living arrangements. Despite its critical role, significant gaps remain in implementing environmental sanitation procedures and the regulatory frameworks that guide them.
This study combines two components: (1) an across-state regulatory review of environmental sanitation in LTCF regulations and (2) a cross-sectional survey assessing environmental sanitation characteristics of nursing homes (NHs) and assisted living facilities (ALFs) and Rural and Urban LTCF observation study in South Carolina (SC) . For the regulatory review …

Plant Community Responses To Wildfire, Timber Thinning, And Bison Reintroduction On The Northern Great Plains, Ethan H. Van-Derpoel
All Theses
The Northern Great Plains (NGP) is one of the largest intact grasslands remaining in the world. These two studies examine a few of the ecological concerns on the NGP today. First, the woody encroachment of conifers into grasslands and the effects of wildfires. Second, the effects of bison (Bison bison) reintroduction on plant communities. In Chapter 1, this study aims to examine the effects of wildfire and mechanical timber thinning, using a two-by-two factorial design, on plant community responses and forage quality in the Bull Mountains area of central Montana, USA. We found that our treatments had varying …
Locomotion And Balance Control In A Biped Robot With Continuum Legs And A Kangaroo-Inspired Tail, Gavin A. Platt
Locomotion And Balance Control In A Biped Robot With Continuum Legs And A Kangaroo-Inspired Tail, Gavin A. Platt
All Theses
This thesis work presents the design, testing, and validation of a continuum-legged biped robot equipped with a kangaroo inspired tail for enhanced stability and adaptability. Unlike traditional rigid link robots, this one expands on soft-legged robots and utilizes tendon-driven continuum robots to mimic octopus and kangaroo behavior for locomotion. The robot uses a hierarchical hybrid control framework to implement walking, obstacle avoidance, vaulting, and push recovery behaviors. To test the performance of the robot four sets of experiments were conducted to validate these systems and evaluate how they performed. The results demonstrate stable walking with rhythmic tail load transfer, effective …
Understanding Policy Transfer Under Decomposition And Coordination: Sequential Reinforcement Learning With Relaxation-Based Feasibility Control, Aannand Lal
All Theses
This thesis investigates how decomposition and coordination (D&C) choices influence exploration, learning, and transfer in reinforcement learning (RL) based design frameworks. A unified methodology is developed to evaluate generality under decomposition and to demonstrate sequential coordination on a representative physical task. The generality study holds the underlying physics constant while varying problem presentation - specifically scalarization weights, objective orientations, and feasibility handling. A train-evaluate matrix is constructed in which each trained policy is assessed across all alternative decompositions. Set-based diagnostics quantify generality through exact-match identity, Jaccard similarity of distinct feasible states, total feasible coverage, and Pareto-front quality. Results show that …

Care Starts Before Entering The Clinic – A Holistic Approach To Assessing Primary Care Access At Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Cory E. Hauptman
All Theses
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is the world’s largest military treatment facility and the primary provider of healthcare to the military, their families, and military retirees in the Washington DC area. The federal government is legally bound to provide access to primary healthcare services to Tricare enrollees within a 30-minute travel time of their residences. This time constraint has only been applied to the transit period from a patient’s residence to the base where the care is provided and has not accounted for the time it takes a patient to get to the clinic once they arrive at the …

We need to know more about farmers’ relationships to tools that can help them, including Precision Agriculture (PA) tech from within the field, human service providers (SPs), and social media (SM). To evaluate these relationships, three research projects were conducted. Two were surveys focusing on perceptions - one was on technology and the other was on social media. The technology survey was on vegetable growers and aimed to understand how open and interested they were in PA, which are agricultural technologies that use data to make life easier. They could monitor soil or weather, steer vehicles, limit water, and more …
Feedback Loops: Fly On The Wall, Patrick Barry
Feedback Loops: Fly On The Wall, Patrick Barry
Articles
I recently turned to an interesting source to get some feedback on the way I communicate when leading meetings and speaking to large groups: artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Born into a family of fast-talking New Yorkers who don’t always wait for you to finish your thoughts before they jump in with theirs (my mom grew up in Manhattan and my dad grew up in Long Island), I recently realized that I have developed what the linguist Deborah Tannen calls a “high-involvement” conversation style, especially when I take the lead in meetings or teach my classes. I nod as other people …
Developing Standardized Testing Datasets For Benchmarking Automated Quality Control Algorithm Performance With Aquatic Sensor Data, Ehsan Kahrizi
Developing Standardized Testing Datasets For Benchmarking Automated Quality Control Algorithm Performance With Aquatic Sensor Data, Ehsan Kahrizi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Advances in water monitoring technologies have led to a large increase in the amount of data collected from rivers, lakes, and other water systems. However, ensuring that these data are accurate and reliable remains a major challenge. Traditional data quality checks are done manually by a technician, which can be slow, inconsistent, and not practical for real-time monitoring. This research addresses these challenges by developing standardized datasets for testing computer-based methods that automatically detect and correct errors in water data. Using information from the Logan River Observatory in northern Utah, we created a step-by-step process to identify, categorize, and label …

Financial Well-Being Among Self-Employed Older Americans, Cal J. Halvorsen, Byeongju Ryu
Harvey A. Friedman Center for Aging
As people live longer, there has been growing attention in recent years on extending working lives. Although many older adults fully retire, those who continue to work often turn to self-employment—a broad category that includes entrepreneurs, small business owners, consultants, contractors, gig workers, and people who take on side jobs. Rates of self-employment rise sharply with age, with nearly 30 percent of employed adults in their 70s working for themselves—approximately twice the share of those in their 60s.

Perceptions Of Leader Emotional Intelligence During Change: A Qualitative Study Of Middle Managers In Higher Education, Kirk Bennett
Perceptions Of Leader Emotional Intelligence During Change: A Qualitative Study Of Middle Managers In Higher Education, Kirk Bennett
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
In a world where change is constant, organizations often struggle to adapt. Whether implementing change proactively or responding to external realities, organizational change leaders must navigate the landscape of change with awareness of the potential for follower resistance to derail their efforts. Change and emotion are not easily separated, and change leaders who ignore the emotional realities of change do so at the risk of failure. Leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence are better equipped to understand and manage the emotions of change in themselves and others. How followers perceive the emotional intelligence of their leaders is crucial to their own …

Ending The Cycle: A New Approach To Decriminalize Mental Illness, Paige E. Kohn
Ending The Cycle: A New Approach To Decriminalize Mental Illness, Paige E. Kohn
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Today, America faces a health paradox: the nation’s largest jails are the nation’s largest psychiatric institutions. In a criminal justice system designed for punishment, solutions like mental health units or mental health courts try to address this contradiction. Yet, if mental illness is a health issue, and not a criminal issue, then increased investments in the criminal justice system seem misplaced. Instead, a more promising approach is to stop the mentally ill from entering the criminal justice system at all.
This article presents just that: a new approach to decriminalize mental illness. Viewed under an overarching “health justice” lens, the …
