Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps
Drivers Of Ecosystem Respiration In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain Aquifer, Eva Tipps
Biology ETDs
Little is known about carbon flux and ecosystem metabolism in river floodplains, despite their potentially large and dynamic contributions to carbon storage and loss. We hypothesized that the region of intermittent saturation (ROIS), which is the subsurface interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, is a biogeochemical ‘hotspot’ for ecosystem respiration and carbon transformation. Groundwater depth and variability in the ROIS facilitate interactions between aquatic and terrestrial processes, but their role in carbon fluxes is poorly understood. We developed a novel method utilizing high-frequency sensors in groundwater wells to capture biogeochemical ‘hot moments’ of ecosystem respiration in the ROIS of the …
A Decision Support System For Global Vaccine Funding: Data-Driven Proposal Scoring, Epidemiological Risk Modeling, And Portfolio Optimization, Ashutosh Kumar
A Decision Support System For Global Vaccine Funding: Data-Driven Proposal Scoring, Epidemiological Risk Modeling, And Portfolio Optimization, Ashutosh Kumar
Theses
Global health financing must continually stretch limited immunization resources across competing priorities, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, plays a central role in this landscape. This work reframes Gavi’s funding decisions as a multi-objective portfolio optimization problem that jointly considers health impact, equity, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and epidemiological interdependence. To operationalize this approach, this study develops a decision support system grounded in Modern Portfolio Theory, treating each proposal as an asset characterized by expected return and risk. Proposal returns are estimated through a heterogeneous data-fusion pipeline that generates quantitative, multi-objective scores aligned with Gavi’s strategic priorities, while epidemiological risk is quantified using …
Comparative Analysis Of Machine Learning Models For Spam Email Detection, Rashed Almarri
Comparative Analysis Of Machine Learning Models For Spam Email Detection, Rashed Almarri
Theses
The current research examines one of the most effective approaches to spam email detection based on machine learning and natural language processing (NLP). The study is placed in the context of the rising cyber threats and the influx of emails, where the spam/ham data is to be classified correctfully using the combination of the Logistic Regression, NLP (including tokenization, lemmatization, and TF-IDF vectorization). The questions of the research were devoted to the efficiency of such an approach and the interpretation of its results. The data used are obtained by a publicly available Kaggle data set that contains 5,572 labeled email …

Security Vulnerabilities In Cloud Storage: A Comparative Study Of Google Drive, Dropbox, And Onedrive, Sultan Majid Alshamsi
Theses
In recent years, use of internet has increased manifold. People have started creating more data, and instead of saving it locally, people have started preferring storing it “online”. Companies are also following the same path to maintain accessibility and availability of their data. Thus, data has become a central part of our lives. People, companies, and institutions rely heavily on cloud storage solutions these days for managing their data. Some of the main cloud storage solution are Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. These are sophisticated solutions developed by tech giants, and general expectation of the public is that these solutions …

Next-Generation Terrorism: Understanding Agentic Ai Systems And Potential For Malign Use, Alexis D'Amato, Ares Boira-Lopez, Emma Theobald, Meg Shercliffe, Jack Rygg, Samuel Hunter, Joel Elson
Reports, Projects, and Research
The call for an increased understanding of artificial intelligence in the U.S. AI Action Plan (The White House, 2025), in tandem with the growing use of AI by terrorist organizations (see Theobald et al., 2025), motivates our effort to provide clarity around the emerging technologies. In doing so, we define and distinguish the features of agentic AI and provide several case studies to illustrate the nefarious use of these tools. Although the current base rate for this type of use is low, we forecast hypothetical use cases given previous examples of terrorists adopting technology and outline the malign use of …

Lemurs are often cited as an example of adaptive radiation, as more than 100 extant species have evolved and filled ecological niches on Madagascar. However, recent work suggests that lemurs lack a hallmark of other adaptive radiations: explosive speciation rates that decline over time. Thus, characterizing the tempo and mode of evolution in lemurs can reveal alternative ways that hyperdiverse clades arise over time, which might differ from traditional models. We explore lemur evolution using a phylogenomic dataset with broad taxonomic sampling that includes the lorisiforms of Asia and continental Africa. Our analyses reveal multiple bursts of diversification (without subsequent …

Data-Driven Mechanism Design: Jointly Eliciting Preferences And Information, Dirk Bergemann, Marek Bojko, Paul Dutting, Renato Paes Leme, Haifeng Xu, Song Zuo
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We study mechanism design in environments where agents have private preferences and private information about a common payoff-relevant state. In such settings with multi-dimensional types, standard mechanisms fail to implement efficient allocations. We address this limitation by proposing data-driven mechanisms that condition transfers on additional post-allocation information, modeled as an estimator of the payoff-relevant state. Our mechanisms extend the classic Vickrey–Clarke–Groves framework. We show they achieve exact implementation in posterior equilibrium when the state is fully revealed or utilities are affine in an unbiased estimator. With a consistent estimator, they achieve approximate implementation that converges to exact implementation as the …
Drivers Of Racial Differences In C-Sections, Adriana Corredor-Waldron, Janet Currie, Molly Schnell
Drivers Of Racial Differences In C-Sections, Adriana Corredor-Waldron, Janet Currie, Molly Schnell
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Black mothers with a trial of labor are 25 percent more likely to deliver by C-section than non-Hispanic White mothers. The gap is largest among mothers with the lowest risk and is reduced by only one-fifth when controlling for observed medical risk factors, sociodemographic characteristics, hospital, and physician or medical practice group. Remarkably, the gap disappears when performing a C-section is more costly due to a concurrent pre-labor C-section limiting surgical resources. This finding is consistent with provider discretion—rather than differences in unobserved medical risk—accounting for persistent racial disparities in delivery method. The additional intrapartum C-sections that occur among low-risk …
Lynk Labs: How The Least-Vetted Documents Destroy Issued Patents, Dennis D. Crouch
Lynk Labs: How The Least-Vetted Documents Destroy Issued Patents, Dennis D. Crouch
Faculty Publications
The Lynk Labs petition presents the Supreme Court with an opportunity to restore the temporal coherence that Congress built into § 311(b)'s evidentiary framework. By treating "printed publication" as synonymous with any reference that eventually becomes public, the Federal Circuit has transformed IPR into a forum where unexamined, abandoned patent applications can destroy patents that survived the very scrutiny those applications failed to complete. The Court should grant certiorari and hold that a printed publication must be printed and published before the critical date to serve as the basis for an IPR challenge.
Solving Professors' Dilemmas About Prohibiting Or Promoting Student Ai Use, John Lande
Solving Professors' Dilemmas About Prohibiting Or Promoting Student Ai Use, John Lande
Faculty Publications
Faculty face difficult dilemmas as law students increasingly use generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT. Should faculty prohibit student use of AI in course work, allow it within limits, or actively encourage it to build professional skills? Because students already use AI tools, faculty must respond. Doing nothing can undermine core educational goals.
This article offers practical strategies for addressing these dilemmas. These strategies are designed to promote learning, uphold academic integrity, and prepare students for an evolving legal profession. This article outlines two broad approaches: restricting unauthorized AI use and promoting responsible, supervised use. It provides concrete suggestions …

Associations Between Trait Mindfulness And Distress In Fertility Patients: Evidence From Two Clinical Samples, Amanda Dillard, Brian Meier, Todd Williams, Michael Wolfe, Mili Thakur
Psychology Faculty Publications
Women who experience fertility problems often report high levels of distress. Trait mindfulness, or the tendency to be present-minded and accepting of one’s thoughts and feelings, could offset this distress. Aims: In two cross-sectional studies, we tested if fertility patients who were higher in trait mindfulness were lower in psychological distress as measured by anxiety and depressive symptoms, fertility-specific distress, and anticipated negative emotions. Method: Study 1 (N = 324; Age M = 34.3; 90% White) included women who had recently sought treatment for fertility problems, and Study 2 (N = 102; Age M = 32.9; …

In Literacies in Times of Disruption: Living and Learning During a Pandemic, Williams focuses on the narratives of over thirty university students at the University of Louisville to examine how their literacy practices and emerging identities were influenced by physical, emotional, and structural crises.
James Moffett’S Basic Principles, Jonathan M. Marine, Stephen Lafer
James Moffett’S Basic Principles, Jonathan M. Marine, Stephen Lafer
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
The tricky part about trying to distill James Moffett’s basic principles is that there are so many of them. In literature, the “major” poets are separated form the “minor” for a number of reasons, but one critical criteria is development; major poets have to develop across the span of their careers, either writing in new forms, or about and with new ideas or themes. Suffice to say, Moffett developed a great deal across his career, from a focus on pedagogy to a focus on spirituality and mindfulness along with increasing consideration of educational assessment and policy. Of course, I’m overgeneralizing …

Book Reviews Introduction: Is It Just Me?, Curtis Porter
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Each of the reviews in this issue of JAEPL focus on a book that was published long before this particular crisis. The books span very different academic fields and very different research methodologies. Yet each reviewer gives a glimpse of how the research behind each book emerged from lived challenges and illustrates how that research sheds light on the daily work and daily struggle that we collectively face.

Improving Data Quality In Survey Research: The Role Of Machine Learning In Handling Inconsistent Responses, Patrick Ndungutse
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
This project aims to strengthen Gallup’s survey data preprocessing by integrating machine learning methods to detect inconsistent responses, complementing existing rule-based checks. The study benchmarks techniques such as Isolation Forest, clustering-based outlier scores, and autoencoders against current approaches to spot inconsistencies more efficiently and with reduced manual effort.
We will evaluate models using a dataset of survey responses previously flagged for inconsistency by Gallup, focusing on accuracy, coverage, and efficiency validated through expert review. The goal is to automate response classification into pass, review, or fail stages, aiming to reduce manual review time by about 25%, or 15 hours weekly, …

Shared Decision Making In Women's Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Brittney Butler
Shared Decision Making In Women's Health: A Quality Improvement Project, Brittney Butler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Shared decision-making (SDM) is the best practice in contraceptive counseling, yet it remains underutilized in primary care, particularly within underserved communities. Limited SDM use reduces patient autonomy, weakens satisfaction, and contributes to inconsistent documentation. This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to evaluate whether an educational intervention on SDM for contraceptive counseling improved provider self-efficacy and the electronic medical record (EMR) documentation of SDM practices. Guided by Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Lewin’s Change Management Model, the project sought to enhance provider confidence and foster sustainable behavioral change. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was implemented at a rural Federally Qualified Health …

Background: Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) are major public health concerns, particularly in underserved populations. Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is evidence-based models that promote early detection and care. Integrating SBIRT into Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) curricula prepares future providers to address substance use in primary care. Local Problem: Despite the effectiveness of SBIRT, its use in primary care remains inconsistent. Barriers, including limited training, low confidence, and unfamiliarity with referral resources, hinder implementation. Structured education and protocols are needed to support provider readiness. Methods: SBIRT was integrated into the FNP curriculum of …
Essays On Corporate Finance And Dark Pool Trading, Sarath Valsalan
Essays On Corporate Finance And Dark Pool Trading, Sarath Valsalan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the first essay, we analyze how dark pool trading changes surrounding one of the largest corporate informational events, mergers and acquisitions. Alfarhoud, Bowe, and Zhang (2021) and Ye and Zhu (2020) suggest that the ability to hide trading is most valuable when the cost of information leakage is high. Since recent studies (e.g. Brolley, 2020; Ye and Zhu, 2020) find detrimental effects of dark pool trading on market quality, we expect that trading surrounding mergers and acquisitions will be opportunistic. We find that the share of dark pool trading rises significantly prior to an announcement compared to trading on …
“The Goal Is To Help The Community”: Motivations And Experiences Of Diverse Families In A Special Education Parent Advocacy Program, Diana Cruz
Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) entitles parents of eligible students with disabilities to meaningful participation in their children’s educational planning. Despite this mandate, many parents encountered barriers that limited their ability to participate in special education processes. These challenges were amplified for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) families who often lacked the social and cultural capital needed to navigate the system (Trainor, 2010b). Culturally and linguistically diverse parents experience systemic barriers such as limited interpretation, discrimination, and cultural differences that restrict their engagement (Buren et al., 2018; Doucet, 2011; Harry, 2008; Kalyanpur et al., 2000; Sanders-Smith et …

Most states legalized the activities due to consumer interest and financial potential for tax revenue generation. The purpose of this study was to explore how legalized sports betting influenced tax revenues in the initial years of expanded adoption in the U.S. To address this purpose, the research questions were structured to uncover if states collectively benefited from the introduction of legalized sports betting, what states have financially benefitted from the implementation of legalized sports betting, and …
A Lineage Of Contemporary Jazz Violin, Tsu Hao Kuo
A Lineage Of Contemporary Jazz Violin, Tsu Hao Kuo
Dissertations
The development of jazz violin has always been multifaceted. Not only has it followed the evolution of jazz, but it has also established its own parallel genres. Since the swing era, the violin no longer remains a top choice for jazz musicians as opposed to early jazz musicians who often doubled on string instruments. Intriguingly, the decline of its popularity in larger ensembles did not inhibit the growth of the jazz violin. Not only did jazz violinists thrive in small jazz ensembles, but its distinct blend with other string music genres also reached styles beyond the common narrative of jazz …
Exploring The Integration Of Social And Emotional Learning In Chinese High School Music Courses, Yao Lu
Exploring The Integration Of Social And Emotional Learning In Chinese High School Music Courses, Yao Lu
Dissertations
Social and emotional learning has become increasingly important in recent years, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. The mental health and emotional well-being of students have received unprecedented attention. However, in China, social and emotional learning is still a relatively new concept. High school students are in a critical period for self-identification and the development of values. Academic competition and peer comparisons have increased significantly, making them more in need of systematic, operational SEL support. Music, as a “natural carrier” of emotions, can externalize, identify, and regulate individual emotions, and can also cultivate empathy and relationship skills in collaborative settings such …
