Siamese: Stealing Fine-Tuned Visual Foundation Models Via Diversified Prompting, Madhureeta Das, Gaurav Bagwe, Miao Pan, Kaichen Yang, Xiaoyong Yuan, Lan Zhang

Michigan Tech Publications

Visual foundation models, characterized by their robust generalization and adaptability, serve as the basis for a wide array of downstream tasks. When fine-tuned for specific tasks, these models encapsulate confidential and valuable task-specific knowledge, making them prime targets for model stealing (MS) attacks. While recent efforts have exposed MS threats in practical scenarios such as data-free and hard-label contexts, these attacks predominantly target traditional victim models trained from scratch. Fine-tuned visual foundation models, pre-trained on vast and diverse datasets and then fine-tuned on downstream tasks, present significant challenges for traditional MS attacks to extract task-specific knowledge. In this paper, we …

The Cult Of Clean Hands: Why No One’S Innocent In America’S War On Corruption, Elizabeth Doan Dec 2025

The Cult Of Clean Hands: Why No One’S Innocent In America’S War On Corruption, Elizabeth Doan

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This study examines how fear of corruption functions as both a political weapon and a national ritual of moral reassurance. The focus lies in understanding why Americans across party lines express deep mistrust in political institutions while simultaneously seeking purity through accusation. Drawing on a nationally representative survey of U.S. voters, the research examines how partisan identity, media narratives, and generational memory influence the emotional economy of corruption—what citizens fear, whom they blame, and why those fears persist. Testing the initial expectation that Republicans would express greater concern about corruption revealed that such fear is shared widely across parties, reflecting …

Solutions Or Punishment? Determinants Of Attitudes Towards Homelessness, Gabriella J. Bartsch Dec 2025

Solutions Or Punishment? Determinants Of Attitudes Towards Homelessness, Gabriella J. Bartsch

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

As the homeless population continues to rise in the United States, it is imperative to look into public opinion, fear, and support for policies regarding perceptions of homelessness. I will examine the relationship between several key determinants—political ideology, socioeconomic status, fear perceptions, and public attitudes toward homelessness policies—within the United States, using data from the Chapman Survey of American Fears, a representative national sample of U.S. adults. Among the key findings is a significant relationship between political party identification and attitudes toward homeless individuals. There is strong, consistent agreement across demographic groups that adequate shelter space should be made available …

Comparing Arabic & Islamic And Classical Western Rhetorics, Victoria Clark Dec 2025

Comparing Arabic & Islamic And Classical Western Rhetorics, Victoria Clark

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This poster compares the origins and tenets of Arabic and Islamic rhetorical tradition versus Classical Western, specifically Greek, rhetorical tradition. Evidence is drawn from Aristotle’s, On Rhetoric: A Theory of Civic Discourse, translated and commented on by George Alexander Kennedy, as well as the section “Arabic & Islamic Traditions 1.1” in, Global Rhetorical Traditions, by Hui Wu and Tarez Samra Graban. Both Arabic Islamic rhetorics and Greek rhetorics are lauded by historians as progenitors of art, language, and argumentation; they agree that the object of rhetoric is to tell the truth and that rhetoric has powerful applications for public use, …

Echo Chambers In Encryption: How Germany's Netzdg Law Displaced Far-Right Discourse And Bolstered Afd Support On Private Platforms, Jackson Pace Campbell

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This study examines the relationship between social media political engagement and support for Germany's far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in 2021, arguing that the 2017 Network Enforcement Act (NetzDG) inadvertently displaced anti-immigration discourse from moderated public platforms into private encrypted spaces, fostering echo chambers and radicalization. Drawing on data from the German Longitudinal Election Study pre-election survey (N=5,119 nationally representative voters), logistic regression analyses test associations between AfD support and social media political use, controlling for socio-demographic and attitudinal factors. Findings confirm hypotheses: overall social media political engagement nearly doubles AfD support odds; private encrypted apps like Telegram and …

Nativism As The Engine Of Fear Toward “Illegal” Immigrants, Amilie Cai Dec 2025

Nativism As The Engine Of Fear Toward “Illegal” Immigrants, Amilie Cai

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Contemporary concerns about “illegal” immigration reveal deep-seated anxieties about race, cultural, and national identity in the United States. In this paper, I examine how xenophobia, media consumption, and Christian nationalism collectively shape fear of illegal immigrants. I build upon previous literature, such as the Group Threat Theory, which posits that dominant groups mobilize to preserve social hierarchies when their status is threatened, and the Agenda-Setting Theory, which emphasizes the media’s power to shape public perceptions. Using Wave 11 of the Chapman Survey of American Fears–a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults collected in 2025–I provide a comparative analysis of these …

Loneliness And Support For Political Violence Within The United States, Kellen Downey Dec 2025

Loneliness And Support For Political Violence Within The United States, Kellen Downey

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Although loneliness is a growing public health issue in the United States, its political effects remain understudied. This paper seeks to understand the relationship between loneliness and the support of political violence by utilizing the Chapman Survey of American Fears (CSAF Wave 11). This survey, which is a component of the 2025 Chapman Survey of American Fears, includes the three-item UCLA Loneliness Scale, as well as two separate items specifically measuring political violence. Using a national survey (N=1,015), I address the following questions: (1) Are lonely individuals more likely to support violence on political grounds? (2) Does strongly identifying with …

Pathways To Possibility: A Multilingual Perspective In Community Colleges, Alex Matson Dec 2025

Pathways To Possibility: A Multilingual Perspective In Community Colleges, Alex Matson

Master's Projects and Capstones

Community Colleges (CCs) play a vital role within both their local communities and the broader American educational system. This study examines the role of the community college, with particular attention to its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs, and the structural dynamics of public funding. Despite the recognized significance of community colleges, the allocation of public funding, distinctly for ESOL programs, continues to reflect structural imbalances. Although research demonstrates the significance of community colleges in widening learning opportunities for marginalized students, critical pedagogy reminds us that educational access remains structurally unequal.

Emerging research indicates that the transformation of placement …

Teaching Dental Public Health Using A Socially Accountable Approach, Anastasios Plessas, Martha Paisi, Nilufar Ahmed, Zoe Brookes, Robert Witton

Peninsula Dental School

Traditional approaches to dental public health education across Europe remain dominated by lecture-based learning which often fail to cultivate critical reflection on inequities, privilege, and the broader social determinants of oral health. Social accountability has been recognized as core competency for dental graduates, requiring dental professionals to align professional practice with the health needs of communities. Community-engaged education is a promising pedagogical model that situates learning within real-world contexts, fosters empathy, cultural competence, and advocacy skills, and strengthens professional identity formation. This paper discusses the Peninsula Dental School’s innovative model, which integrates community engagement, reflective practice, and interprofessional education within …

Medicaid Funding And Health-Related Social Needs: A Policy Analysis, Passion Ilea Dec 2025

Medicaid Funding And Health-Related Social Needs: A Policy Analysis, Passion Ilea

Dissertations and Theses

The U.S. has disproportionately high health care spending compared to other high-income nations and comparatively poor health outcomes. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have recently increased emphasis on addressing Medicaid member social needs. CMS believes addressing health-related social needs (HRSN) may reduce costs and improve health outcomes for Medicaid members. CMS has begun to test theories regarding the impact of member HRSN on health care by designing federal mechanisms to address HRSN, such as in lieu of services and settings-funded services, and by encouraging state Medicaid programs to develop their own approaches, such as Flexible Services. Information …

Investigating Dysfunctional Cognition Change As A Putative Mechanism Of Cbt For Youth Anxiety, Ocd And Ptsd: Protocol For An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis, Ivana Buric, Anke Klein, Ronald M Rapee, Brooke Levis, Philip C Kendall, Eric A Storch, Lynn Mobach

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Introduction: Anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in children and adolescents and can lead to significant impairment. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with exposure is the first-line treatment, yet approximately half of treated youth do not achieve full remission. Dysfunctional cognitions-negative automatic thoughts, maladaptive beliefs and distorted interpretations-are considered key targets of CBT, but evidence in youth is mixed and underpowered. This study will examine whether change in dysfunctional cognitions mediates treatment outcome in anxiety, OCD and PTSD symptoms and whether this association varies across individual characteristics.

Methods and analysis: An individual participant data meta-analysis …

Individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have an increased incidence of seizures, which worsen cognitive decline. Using a transgenic mouse model of AD neuropathology that exhibits spontaneous seizures, we previously found that seizure activity stimulates and accelerates depletion of the hippocampal neural stem cell (NSC) pool, which was associated with deficits in neurogenesis-dependent spatial discrimination. However, the precise molecular mechanisms that drive seizure-induced activation and depletion of NSCs are unclear. Here, using mice of both sexes, we performed RNA-sequencing on the hippocampal dentate gyrus and identified differentially expressed regulators of neurogenesis in the Wnt signaling pathway that regulates many aspects of …

Calmodulin (CaM) serves an essential role in eukaryotic cells as a Ca2+ sensor. Ca2+ binding leads to conformation changes in CaM that enable engagement of a repertoire of enzymes and the regulation of their catalytic activities. Classically, Ca2+-CaM binds to an inhibitory pseudosubstrate sequence C-terminal to the kinase domain in members of the Ca2+-CaM-dependent protein kinase (CAMK) family and relieves inhibition to promote catalytic activity. Here, we report an unexpected mechanism by which CaM can bind CHK2 kinase to inhibit its kinase activity. Using biochemical, biophysical and structural mass spectrometry, we identify a direct interaction of Ca2+-CaM with the CHK2 …

Resolving The Mysteries Of Brain Clearance And Immune Surveillance, Jonathan Kipnis, Et Al. Dec 2025

Resolving The Mysteries Of Brain Clearance And Immune Surveillance, Jonathan Kipnis, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Recent advances are transforming our understanding of brain fluid dynamics, highlighting cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow as a key process in brain waste clearance. While debates persist regarding its anatomical pathways and regulatory mechanisms, certain core principles have become widely accepted. CSF influx occurs primarily along periarterial spaces, solute clearance follows multiple routes, and glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic systems are functionally connected. Brain clearance is influenced by vascular pulsation, neural activity, and sleep. Immune cells at brain-border niches both monitor solute efflux and modulate flow, linking brain clearance to neuroimmune interactions. A deeper understanding of brain clearance could unlock new therapeutic …
