Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global crisis, with 1 in 6 bacterial infections being resistant to antibiotics and causing 40 million deaths between 1990 and 2021 worldwide. This threat has resulted in the demand for alternative therapies, like bacteriophage therapy which uses viruses to treat bacterial infections by killing them. Gordonia rubripertincta is a gram-positive bacterium that is found in various habitats: water, soil, and on the exterior of plants. Gordonia species are rare, however, they are emerging as opportunistic human pathogens that may cause various infections in any individual. G. rubripertincta infections occur from surgical complications with a catheter …

Rock, Rock, ‘Til You Drop: How Acid Rock Amplified The Counterculture Rebellion Of The 60s And 70s, Evan Bauer
Honors Projects
Acid rock’s rise to the top was aided by unprecedented times in American history. A collision of forces such as anti-war sentiment, youth rebellion, and the emergence of lysergic diethylamide exploded into a generation changing era of peace, love, violence, and above all else, music. Through the early years of acid rock's dominance, the outspoken virtues of the artists were held dear to their fans and listeners across the country, who never had to question its authenticity. Acid rock’s popularity was unlike anything the American people had ever seen, with major weekend long events which captivated the media and the …

Reinforcement Learning-Guided Large Language Model Fine-Tuning For Privacy-Preserving Text Rewriting, Zhan Shi, Yefeng Yuan, Liang Cheng, Yuhong Liu
Computer Science and Engineering
The advancement of machine learning systems depends on large-scale, high-quality datasets. However, corpora drawn from user-generated and proprietary domains are often laden with sensitive information, posing significant privacy, security, and compliance risks. Conventional anonymization methods, which focus on removing explicit identifiers, can degrade downstream performance and leave the more nuanced challenge of implicit privacy leakage unresolved. This form of leakage allows for sensitive attributes such as author identity, demographics, or personality to be inferred from writing style alone. To address this, we present a privacy-preserving text rewriting framework based on guided reinforcement learning. Our approach features a composite reward function …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
In the first 303 days of 2025, there were 350+ mass shootings in the United States. Recent research has shown mass shootings are one of the primary fears among Americans, and if unaddressed, could continue to cause political and social division. Using the Chapman University Survey on American Fears (CSAF), a national representative sample of American adults, my research highlights the influence of primary factors such as gender, political orientation, and media intake. This research will examine the correlation between gun violence and opposition to weapon regulation. Mass shootings have become rampant in spaces that should be safe, like schools, …

How Does The Intersectionality Of Race, Gender, And Organizational Culture Influence The Utilization And Consequences Of Code-Switching Among Black Men In Executive-Level Positions Within Nonprofit Settings?, Lepra George
Dissertations (1934 -)
Black men in executive roles within U.S. nonprofit organizations lead under racialized and gendered expectations that shape when and how they are perceived as leader-like. This qualitative study examines how these leaders interpret their lived experiences of code-switching, across speech and broader self-presentation, within White-normed nonprofit cultures. Guided by intersectionality and informed by impression-management theory, the study employed an interpretivist, phenomenological design and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with six Black male executives. Four themes emerged: (1) Black Male Leaders Consciously Navigate Authentic Identity, balancing cultural self-expression with perceived professionalism; (2) Confronting the Race–Gender Double Bind in …

Towards Resilient Data Governance: An Industry Study On Practitioner Perspectives On The Current State Of Data Governance, Anthony Mazzarella Iii
Towards Resilient Data Governance: An Industry Study On Practitioner Perspectives On The Current State Of Data Governance, Anthony Mazzarella Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Experts agree that data governance is crucial for managing data as an asset, yet in practice, it remains inconsistently defined, unevenly implemented, and poorly understood. Earlier industry studies offered valuable descriptive benchmarks of governance adoption and professional roles, but provided limited theoretical insight and little empirical evidence explaining how governance functions within organizations. Building on this foundation, the current research offers a more substantial and analytically rigorous contribution by transforming descriptive observations into empirical explanations. Through a collaborative academic–industry partnership, the study utilizes a global survey of 565 respondents (348 valid cases) to analyze governance structures, motivations, challenges, and the …

Nutrient contamination is a major contributor to eutrophication and water quality degradation worldwide. Conventional treatment technologies often lack selectivity and efficiency in complex aquatic environments, highlighting the need for advanced materials with tailored recognition capabilities. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have emerged as promising adsorbents for nutrient remediation due to their high selectivity, stability and reusability. This review synthesizes recent progress on the synthesis strategies of MIPs. Applications of MIPs in removing phosphate, nitrate and ammonia from water are critically examined, with particular attention to adsorption performance under varying environmental conditions. The limitations of current systems, including modest adsorption capacities, incomplete …
