Industrial environments often generate high noise levels due to the continuous operation of machinery and production equipment. Persistent exposure to workplace noise exceeding the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 430 million people worldwide require rehabilitation for hearing impairment, with 109.4 million of these cases occurring in Southeast and Central Asia. As a critical component of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management, noise control is often implemented using Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an earplug-earmuff combination, developed as Madcom Noise Protection, …

Human serum albumin (HSA) is a ubiquitous, multifunctional protein responsible for the systemic distribution of both endogenous metabolites and exogenous pharmaceuticals. Its inherent properties, particularly its ability to seep into tissues and its multiple ligand-binding sites, have rendered HSA an attractive vehicle for nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, particularly for cancer targeting. In this study, we present high-resolution crystallographic data revealing two distinct dimerization patterns of HSA (Protein Data Bank [PDB] ID: 9V61) obtained under high-concentration crystallization conditions, along with results from dipyridamole docking. Both dimer types demonstrate extensive interface areas and a significant number of electrostatic interactions. Comparative analysis with …
Optimizing Crime Response Time Using Predictive Analytics Models, Mohammad Hassan Bin Yaqoob
Optimizing Crime Response Time Using Predictive Analytics Models, Mohammad Hassan Bin Yaqoob
Theses
Timely and efficient emergency response is essential for public safety, particularly in high- risk urban environments. However, existing dispatch systems often rely on reactive decision- making, leading to delays and inefficient resource allocation. This thesis explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and data modeling can enhance police response times through predictive analytics. A systematic review of 17 peer-reviewed studies identified key predictors such as dispatch behavior, crime history, temporal characteristics, and geographic location. Using real-world emergency response and crime data, predictive models were developed and evaluated through algorithms including XGBoost, Linear Support Vector Machine (LSVM), Generalized Linear Model (GLM), and Neural …

A series of novel bis-piperazine derivatives (2a–2f) were synthesized and structurally characterized via Fourier transform-infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Their gamma-ray shielding efficiencies were investigated through simulations on the Monte Carlo-based Geant4-GATE platform, and the results were benchmarked against data obtained from the XCOM and Phy-X software. A simulation model incorporating an NaI scintillation detector and a point gamma source was developed. Key shielding parameters, including mass attenuation coefficient, linear attenuation coefficient, half-value layer, and mean free path (MFP), were evaluated at gamma energies of 80, 120, 662, 1173, and 1332 keV. Additionally, the energy absorption buildup factor …

This article aims to formulate the ethics of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in legal education. Legal education held by the Faculty of Law is a center for the development of excellence in legal science in order to generate competent graduates. The ability to provide a legal opinion on a legal issue is a competency that every law graduate must have. In this era, law students can easily command AI to construct legal opinion without going through the legal research process. The implication for Faculty of Law is that they fail to prepare law graduates who are able to produce legal …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction Sleep impairments are prevalent among individuals recovering from substance use disorders (SUDs) and are associated with poorer treatment outcomes and increased relapse risk. Physical activity (PA) is known to enhance sleep in general populations, but its day-to-day effects on sleep during SUD recovery remain underexplored, especially across different recovery stages. Methods and Analysis In this observational n-of-1 study, we aim to examine within-person associations between daily PA and sleep quality in three groups of individuals at varying stages of substance use recovery (early treatment, continuing care and long-term recovery). A substudy will validate the agreement between two wearable sleepmonitoring …

Automatic Guitar Transcription Of Polyphonic Music, Ritwik Patil
Automatic Guitar Transcription Of Polyphonic Music, Ritwik Patil
Master's Theses
Transcribing guitar music automatically is a complex task due to polyphonic overlap, tuning variations, and diverse playing techniques. Current transcription systems focus on identifying note pitches and timing while ignoring performance techniques that describe how the notes are played, treating guitar recordings as generic polyphonic audio and producing MIDI-like outputs that lose important information about articulation and style. To address these challenges, we propose an end-to-end transformer model for automatic guitar transcription. The system uses a T5-based encoder-decoder architecture that processes the Constant-Q Transform (CQT) of stereo audio input. The stereo representation helps separate individual guitar parts within a mix …
Transnational Mass Tort Litigation: A Proposal For An International Court Of Civil Justice, Maya Steinitz
Transnational Mass Tort Litigation: A Proposal For An International Court Of Civil Justice, Maya Steinitz
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter argues for the creation of an International Court of Civil Justice for transnational mass tort cases. It considers the challenges of adjudicating cross-border mass torts along with the incentives and feasibility of a new international court. Drawing upon case studies including the Bhopal disaster, litigation surrounding the devastation of the Ecuadorian rainforest, and the attempts to sue over human rights abuses in Nigeria, the chapter demonstrates that the world's legal systems were not designed to solve these kinds of complex cases, and the absence of mechanisms to ensure coordination means that victims try, but fail, to find justice …

Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Foreign portfolio investments have been at the center of research in the finance, economics, and international business domains since the early 1990s when developing economies started to relax their capital account and allowed the entry of foreign investments. Over the years, various macroeconomic (country-specific and global), firm-specific, and quality factors have been studied as determinants in relation to these flows, Still, there is no consensus regarding which factor influences more than the others. This paper uses bibliometric analysis to understand the existing literature to build a solid conceptual base in this research topic. For this study, bibliometric data of 731 …

Import Substitution Industrialization In Africa: Guinea's Experience, Mamadou Saliou Diallo
Import Substitution Industrialization In Africa: Guinea's Experience, Mamadou Saliou Diallo
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Import substitution industrialization (ISI) is such a template that many countries lagging behind in terms of development considered as an essential phase. The process of adopting ISI by these countries, however, displays contrasts in many aspects. The more apparent cases of differences in ISI adoption emanate from the East-Asian and Sub-Saharan African (SSA) models. These two regions are both latecomers in that industrial revolution, compared to Latin American countries being pioneers, was a chronologically later undertaking. Despite constraining factors, the East-Asian model thrives to become a successful experience. Meanwhile, SSA and Latin American countries still strive to achieve this ambition. …
