Problem-Based And Practice-Driven: Designing For Engagement In An Online Educational Leadership Program, Owens G. Saylor

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Virtual professional learning has emerged as a flexible and scalable solution for developing educational leaders, particularly those navigating demanding roles and geographic barriers. However, these benefits often come at the cost of diminished engagement, interaction, and practical application to real-world leadership challenges. Without intentional design, virtual sessions risk becoming passive and disconnected, undermining their professional development value. This study responds to these challenges by exploring how a problem-based learning (PBL) approach can improve engagement in the virtual component of the Kentucky Leadership Rising (KLR) Aspiring Superintendent Workshop Series.

This mixed methods action research (MMAR) study examined participants’ perceptions of engagement …

Following a sequential MMAR design, a reconnaissance phase combined a whole-staff survey (n=87) with qualitative interviews to diagnose the individual, organizational, and contextual factors shaping implementation. Analyses identified …

Unveiling The Shadows: An Exploratory Study On Ghostwriting, Gray Markets, And The Ethics Of Contract Cheating, Micah Crawford Jan 2026

Unveiling The Shadows: An Exploratory Study On Ghostwriting, Gray Markets, And The Ethics Of Contract Cheating, Micah Crawford

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation

Contract cheating has become an increasingly complex challenge for higher education, particularly as digital platforms, global academic labor markets, and generative artificial intelligence reshape the production and detection of academic work. While much of the existing literature examines contract cheating from the perspectives of students, faculty, and institutions, less attention has been given to the individuals who produce ghostwritten academic work. This dissertation addresses that gap by exploring how shadow scholars understand their roles, ethical boundaries, and participation within the academic integrity ecosystem.

Using an exploratory qualitative design, this study draws on twelve semi-structured narrative interviews with six freelance academic …

Contractual Democracy From Statehouse To School Board: Shifts In Legislation And School Board Authority In Kentucky, Hannah M. Edelen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

School boards have long been regarded as a cornerstone of American democracy, providing local governance over public education. While considerable scholarship highlights the increasing involvement of state and federal governments in education, relatively few studies examine with specificity how legislatures shape the local authority of these governance structures. This study investigates how the Kentucky State Legislature has influenced the authority of local school boards over three legislative sessions (2020–2022) and how board members perceive their evolving role. Using a multi-method approach and conceptualized in principal-agent theory, this research contributes to understanding how legislatures shape the governing responsibilities of school boards …

Understanding Computer-Mediated Human Experience In Digital-Physical Hybrid Space, Jiangnan Xu Jan 2026

Understanding Computer-Mediated Human Experience In Digital-Physical Hybrid Space, Jiangnan Xu

Theses

With the rapid development of mobile and immersive technologies, the boundary between the digital and real world is increasingly blurred, giving rise to hybrid spaces. Hybrid spaces have permeated daily life and reshaped spatial meaning-making and social interaction. Despite their growing prevalence, empirical understanding of human experiences in hybrid spaces remains limited. If left unexamined, hybrid spaces risk becoming technology-centered rather than human-centered environments that overlook socio-cultural dimensions, potentially leading to harmful consequences for individuals and society. To investigate human experience in hybrid spaces, this thesis comprises five studies and uses gameful systems as research probes. Prior literature identifies collaboration …

Crypto Exchanges In Market Regulation, Yesha Yadav Jan 2026

Crypto Exchanges In Market Regulation, Yesha Yadav

Vanderbilt Law Review

The cryptocurrency market has proven notoriously challenging to regulate despite a decade during which it has gained in economic size, sophistication, and cultural impact. Even as repeated crises have left ordinary savers wiped out, regulation has shown itself to be woefully absent as a means of mitigating risks ex ante or helping cover the cost of damage ex post. This Article looks to break this deadlock by proposing a tried-and-tested solution: It argues that regulators should task crypto exchanges with providing oversight as self-regulatory organizations of the crypto market in which they play an anchoring role. It offers three supporting …

Presidential Immunity: Before And After Trump, Thomas P. Schmidt Jan 2026

Presidential Immunity: Before And After Trump, Thomas P. Schmidt

Vanderbilt Law Review

'All the officers of government," the Supreme Court said long ago, "from the highest to the lowest, are creatures of the law, and are bound to obey it." Despite that ringing and categorical language, however, the Court has held that the President-the "highest" and most powerful of all government officers-is "immune" from judicial oversight in several respects. Indeed, when the Court held last Term that former presidents are presumptively immune from criminal prosecution for officials acts, the dissenters warned: '`n every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law."

This Article unpacks the various presidential …

False Idols In The Early History Of International Taxation, Wei Cui Jan 2026

False Idols In The Early History Of International Taxation, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

A careful reading of recent scholarship on the early history of international taxation, especially on the League of Nations ’ work on ‘ double taxation ’ , ought to have dislodged many myths about this history. But more often than not, such scholarship is taken to offer mere details without altering our fundamental understanding. This chapter suggests that this reception refl ects a longstanding pattern in discourses about international taxation: participants perpetuate or cling onto narratives that are easily seen to be false. The chapter exposes this pattern by summarising evidence for four rarely-acknowledged conclusions about the League ’ s …

Good Faith And Certainty In Contract Law, Marcus Moore Jan 2026

Good Faith And Certainty In Contract Law, Marcus Moore

All Faculty Publications

Does a general principle of good faith create too much uncertainty in  Contract Law? This article provides in-depth consideration of the controversy around this question.Reviewing a number of common arguments and reasonswhy good faith is said to be too uncertain, and responses to these, the article finds a complex picture rather than a simple answer. Recent Canadian experience with recognising a general principle of good faith in contractual performance suggests that at least two further details are critical to the potential for uncertainty: first, whether good faith operates as a freestanding duty or instead functions as a unifying principle that …

Unleashing Mass Entrepreneurship: Firm-Level Evidence On The Impact Of China’S Registered Capital Reform, Wei Cui, Mengying Wei Jan 2026

Unleashing Mass Entrepreneurship: Firm-Level Evidence On The Impact Of China’S Registered Capital Reform, Wei Cui, Mengying Wei

All Faculty Publications

A 2013 amendment of China’s Company Law allowed limited liability companies to form without any minimum equity requirement. Using a confidential taxpayer dataset, we causally identify the reform’s impact on the composition of new firms and their financing choices. Firmentry surged by 33%. Newfirms started with 31.6% lower assets but operated at similar scales as prior firms. While entrants’ average profitability remained the same, smaller entrants saw increased profitability post-reform, indicating entry by productive butwealth-constrained entrepreneurs. Consistent with a preference for debt over equity, new entrants displayed a 94% decline in equity and large increases in liabilities. This indicates that …

The Ideological Work Of Penal Reform: How Reformers Justify Penal-Welfare Hybridization, John Halushka, Brandon Miller

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article uses the Santa Clara County Reentry Resource Center (RRC) as a case study to explore the cultural content of penal reform. Specifically, we explore the discourses that officials use to publicly justify projects of penal-welfare hybridization, or the linking of state systems of punishment and welfare to manage criminalized populations. Our qualitative analysis draws on a dataset consisting of county planning documents, budgets, videos, press releases, and newsletters published online between 2011 and 2023. By examining these materials over time, we are able to chart patterns of consistency and variation in how officials justify hybridization. We find that …
