Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Can’T Sue A Movement: Greenpeace’S $667 Million Crisis Narrative, Trevor Hart
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In March of 2025, the environmental group Greenpeace was found liable for nearly $667 million to Energy Transfer, the oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The lawsuit was widely regarded as a SLAPP, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, because it weaponized civic torts to infringe upon Greenpeace’s First Amendment rights. The $667 million verdict is an unprecedented figure in SLAPP litigation–it’s enough to bankrupt Greenpeace in the United States and “chill” democratic participation. This thesis used a hybrid blame-renewal crisis narrative framework to analyze Greenpeace’s public response to lawsuits against a backdrop of cultural and political economic …
Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi
Analysis Of Environmental Site Assessments Of Brownfield Redevelopment In Waterloo, Iowa, Sage Cappi
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis examines how Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) are interpreted and utilized in the context of Brownfield redevelopment, with particular attention to the relationship between historical context, contamination, health risk, and future redevelopment possibilities. While ESAs are widely used to inform redevelopment decisions, there remains a gap in understanding how reported environmental data translates into meaningful assessments. To address this, this study analyzes historical and environmental data from six Brownfield sites, identifying documented contaminants, their associated carcinogenic group, and redevelopment potential. Central to this research is the development of a relational framework designed to function as a more approachable interpretive …
Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris
Echoes Of The Nation: Janáček, Bartók, And The Articulation Of Central European Identity In Opera, Elyse Morris
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This thesis examines how opera functioned as a medium for articulating and negotiating national identity in the final decades of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Focusing on Leoš Janáček’s Jenůfa (1904) and Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle (1911), it explores how composers employed dramatic structure, linguistic choice, and musical language to construct culturally specific forms of expression within a rapidly shifting political and social landscape. Drawing on approaches from musicology and cultural history, the study considers how operatic works not only reflect national identity but actively participate in its formation.
Through analysis of libretto, language, and musical style, this thesis demonstrates that both …
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Project-Based Assessments In Middle School Mathematics, Andrea Fettkether
An Analysis Of The Influence Of Project-Based Assessments In Middle School Mathematics, Andrea Fettkether
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In today’s diverse classrooms, teachers face the challenge of educating students with varied academic abilities, including those with disabilities, gifted learners, and students at grade level. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures inclusive access to core curriculum, but educators must differentiate instruction to meet all learners’ needs. Traditional assessments focus on rote memorization, often failing to reflect deeper understanding or real-world problem-solving.
In middle school math, standard curricula often lack project-based assessments, despite research supporting their effectiveness in improving academic achievement and student engagement. Students benefit from working in collaborative environments where they can discuss mathematical ideas, receive …

Examining Patient Safety Culture Trends In U.S. Healthcare Through A Multi-Year Analysis, Hassan Alabdullah
Examining Patient Safety Culture Trends In U.S. Healthcare Through A Multi-Year Analysis, Hassan Alabdullah
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Patient Safety Culture (PSC) is recognized as a cornerstone of healthcare quality and a key determinant of patient outcomes. Despite the Institute of Medicine’s early calls to establish safety-oriented systems, evidence on the long-term stability of PSC in U.S. hospitals has remained limited. This dissertation addresses this gap through a multi-year evaluation of PSC using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC v1.0) and advanced statistical methods. Drawing on one of the largest national datasets—comprising over 993,000 healthcare providers from 1,601 U.S. hospitals across three survey cycles (2013–2020)—the study employed a longitudinal repeated cross-sectional design. Analyses combined descriptive statistics, …
Viral And Host Cell Determinants Of Resistance To Complement-Mediated Killing During Parainfluenza Virus Type 5 Infection, Jenna R. Aquino
Viral And Host Cell Determinants Of Resistance To Complement-Mediated Killing During Parainfluenza Virus Type 5 Infection, Jenna R. Aquino
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
RNA viruses are a major global public health concern due to high mutation rates, zoonotic potential, and immune evasion. Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) can establish persistent infections (PIs) despite encountering innate immune responses, including the complement (C′) system. RNA virus replication produces defective interfering particles (DIPs) containing truncated defective viral genomes (DVGs) that depend on standard (STD) virus for replication. DVGs are increasingly detected in natural infections and modulate type I interferon (IFN-I), but their role in the C′ system is unclear. We investigated how DVGs affect C′-mediated lysis during PIV5 infection using real-time in vitro cell viability assays. C′ …

First-Principles Insights Into Electronic And Magnetic Structure At Hybrid Interfaces And Low-Dimensional Materials And Reaction On Surfaces, Bushra Ashraf
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Low-dimensional materials and transition metal surfaces/interfaces provide complementary platforms for understanding how dimensionality, symmetry, spin–orbit coupling (SOC), and interfacial charge transfer/hybridization jointly control electronic structure, emergent magnetism, and surface reactivity. Using first-principles modeling with experimental comparisons, this work aims to establish interfacial structure–property relationships across low-dimensional systems.
Strained Pd adlayers on 2H-MoS2(0001) provide a controlled platform to separate strain-driven exchange from interface-induced quenching in an itinerant d-electron metal. Although expansive strain promotes magnetism in free-standing Pd, strong Pd–MoS2 hybridization and charge transfer suppress the monolayer moment and leave a narrow thickness window where magnetism re-emerges in …

Learning-Based Optimization For Collaborative Truck-Drone Routing And Scheduling, Ahmad A. Bany Abdelnabi
Learning-Based Optimization For Collaborative Truck-Drone Routing And Scheduling, Ahmad A. Bany Abdelnabi
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Modern delivery networks increasingly rely on innovative technologies such as drones working alongside trucks to meet rising demands for fast and efficient last–mile transportation. Hybrid truck–drone delivery offers strong potential, but its effectiveness depends on careful synchronization between trucks and drones. Although drones provide fast, direct travel, their limited endurance and the need to coordinate launch and recovery with trucks create tightly coupled routing and scheduling interactions. Poor dispatch decisions can cause truck waiting, reduce parallelism, and increase mission completion time. These challenges motivate decision frameworks that explicitly model synchronization and develop scalable methods for coordinated truck–drone operations. This dissertation …

The collection opens with “Forget Her Inc.,” a short story that juggles an ensemble cast of lesbians and examines whether memory eraser therapy is an ethical practice for treating a broken heart. “It’s All the Same,” the titular story, uses lyricism to present the parallels between two women in terms of family dynamics, interests, and attachment styles; the story explores a loving friendship between a lesbian and a straight woman.
“Fun …
An Integrated Framework For Last-Mile Delivery Optimization Using Reinforcement Learning And Social Media-Based Traffic Prediction In Underdeveloped Megacities, Vasanth Bhat
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Supply chain management has become increasingly critical as transportation costs rise and urban delivery systems place additional pressure on already congested networks. Last-mile delivery—the movement of goods from distribution centers to end users—represents the most expensive and operationally complex segment of the logistics process, particularly in underdeveloped megacities characterized by unpredictable traffic, limited infrastructure, and sparse real-time data. This dissertation proposes an integrated framework for optimizing last-mile delivery in such environments by combining social media–based traffic intelligence, machine learning, and deep reinforcement learning. The framework leverages unstructured, real-time data from social media platforms to enhance traffic prediction and incorporates these …
Essays On Politics And Ideology In Asset Management, Madison Borrelli
Essays On Politics And Ideology In Asset Management, Madison Borrelli
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This dissertation examines how political influence and ideology shape the investment and governance decisions of institutional investors. My first essay studies the effects of political interference on public pension plan asset allocation. Plans facing investment restrictions shift away from low-cost traditional assets toward higher-fee, lower-performing alternative assets. While politicians advocating these restrictions receive increased media attention, state economies do not benefit. These findings underscore how political incentives create agency problems that adversely affect investment decisions and outcomes.
The second essay examines whether differences in political ideology between asset managers and investors give rise to conflicts of interest. Mutual fund institutions …

Contested Air: Politics, Prejudice, And Radio Broadcasting In New York State, 1925-1928, Sebastian Garcia
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
This thesis examines the intersection between radio broadcasting as the "new media" of the 1920s and American political culture of the period, using New York Governor and 1928 Democratic presidential candidate Alfred E. Smith as a case study. Smith entered 1925 as a political lone wolf and left the year as a triumphant victor set to take the presidency. Building on the work of Smithian scholars, this thesis illuminates how Smith’s radio use remained central to this political transformation. Smith found in radio an apt space to bypass Republican opposition and mobilize the body politic through direct engagement, which, in …

This thesis examines how improvisational theatre and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed function independently and how these practices have shaped me as both an artist and educator. Having grown up with improvisation and continued working professionally in performance and education, I have observed how it creates conditions that support development. Guided by a qualitative practice-as-research methodology, in which my own artistic and pedagogical practice serves as both site and subject of inquiry, this study explores three central questions: How does improvisational theatre contribute to youth development? In what ways can Theatre of the Oppressed deepen or reshape improvisation’s developmental …
Reflection In Still Waters: Generative Ai's Production Of Language, Jonathan D. Hawks
Reflection In Still Waters: Generative Ai's Production Of Language, Jonathan D. Hawks
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Language is a conceptual process of meaning-making as well as a social construction as defined by Saussure, Bakhtin, and Lacan. Large Language Models (LLMs) engage with neither process and instead present language as a finished and consumable product which undermines its fundamental aspects. The difference between representing language through probability and its structural components instead of its more inherent qualities is not a pointless distinction. This paper utilizes Narcissus as a central metaphor to show how people misread the outputs of LLMs as language which imparts to those reflected words meaning on par with our own conceptualizations of reality. People …
