Little Better Than One Of The Savages, Michael J. Aaron
Little Better Than One Of The Savages, Michael J. Aaron
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Western Pennsylvania was one of the earliest frontiers in US history, but is often overlooked and oversimplified. The frontier just west of the Appalachian Mountains was a complicated place of settler and Native American interaction, varied permanent settlement, and wilderness. The journal and letters of Major Ebenezer Denny show a complicated frontier of danger, wilderness, and chaos that is often not seen within historical views of the region. Through Denny and other Western Pennsylvania settlers, this paper complicates the common view of the Western Pennsylvania as a simply and quickly colonized region by showing the area as an unsettled frontier …
Soviet Sympathies On-Screen: Cinema As A Cultural Apparatus In The Stalinist Era, Anne E. Bolenbaugh
Soviet Sympathies On-Screen: Cinema As A Cultural Apparatus In The Stalinist Era, Anne E. Bolenbaugh
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
The Stalinist era of the Soviet Union (1924-1956) is marked by its incredible pace of forced industrialization, extreme cultural repression, and an atmosphere of immense fear and paranoia, resulting in the Great Terror. Among the various mechanisms to enforce the state program, cinema offers a unique insight into specific state ideologies at key points in Stalin’s regime. By examining the three key phases of the Stalinist era consisting of his initial years, the Second World War, and the years of High Stalinism, it is possible to trace notable shifts in the Soviet authority’s approach to cinema as a propagandistically advantageous …
Certifying Widowhood: Lizzie Booth And The Making Of Black Widow Pension Entitlement During The Civil War, Michael B. Cox Ii
Certifying Widowhood: Lizzie Booth And The Making Of Black Widow Pension Entitlement During The Civil War, Michael B. Cox Ii
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
This article argues that Mary Elizabeth Wayt Lanning Booth, most commonly known as Lizzie Booth, played a decisive and underrecognized role in securing pension rights for Black widows during the Civil War. In the wake of her husband’s death at the Fort Pillow Massacre in 1864, Booth personally lobbied President Abraham Lincoln and Senator Charles Sumner for pension reform, catalyzing the passage of the Supplemental Pension Act. This reform permitted formerly enslaved women—whose marriages had been deemed extralegal—to prove their unions through eyewitness testimony and access federal benefits. Drawing primarily on pension files, the article demonstrates that while the Act …

A Two-Pronged Approach To Addressing Unmet Legal Needs On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Elaine Yellow Horse, Jillian Yellow Horse
South Dakota Law Review
This Article, which marries theory and praxis, provides a focused literature review and concrete solutions for immediate implementation. It begins by exploring the existing scholarship pertaining to unmet legal needs and (in)access to justice in Indian country. It considers the overlapping yet distinct roles of licensed attorneys and lay advocates, prosecutors, and judges and how tribes have endeavored to draw the lines around these roles. After reviewing this background, the Article pivots and contributes a more nuanced perspective that concentrates on the legal system on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in particular. Rather than endorsing a single apparent answer to …

Access To Justice In Indian Country: Empowering Pro Se Criminal Defendants Through Holistic Defense And Resource Creation, Ilse Turner, Johanna Farmer
South Dakota Law Review
The question of the right to counsel for indigent criminal defendants has consumed various courts and academic journals for decades. Part of this question has revolved around the rights of indigent defendants being prosecuted in tribal courts. There has been scholarly attention devoted to the study of the rights of indigent defendants in tribal courts and the impacts of case law and congressional acts on these rights. This Article seeks to expand the scholarly works around indigent defendants in tribal courts and provide tangible solutions tribes can begin to execute without an act of Congress. This Article will discuss the …

Mosquitoes in the genus Culex are the primary vectors of West Nile virus (WNv) in the United States, with Culex pipiens and Culex tarsalis serving as the dominant species in Spokane. In urban environments, catch basins and other artificial water bodies that collect stagnant and polluted water provide favorable breeding habitats for Culex pipiens. This study aimed to assess the spatial distribution and seasonal dynamics of Culex larvae in Spokane. We examined 303 randomly selected catch basins in the summer of 2025, and at each site we recorded the presence or absence of water, water depth, and mosquito larval …
Dietary Ecology Of Waterfowl Nest Predators In The Prairie Pothole Region: Evaluating Resource Use From Species To Individual Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Grace Barthelmess
Dietary Ecology Of Waterfowl Nest Predators In The Prairie Pothole Region: Evaluating Resource Use From Species To Individual Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Grace Barthelmess
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Nest predation is a primary factor influencing waterfowl productivity in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North America. Although this system is intensely managed and studied, research has largely focused on how predators affect waterfowl populations, with comparatively little attention to how predators actually rely on waterfowl as a resource. Understanding predator feeding ecology is therefore critical for informing effective management strategies and interpreting the complexity of predator-prey interactions on this landscape. My objective overall was to elucidate the feeding ecology of nine focal predator species commonly associated with waterfowl nest predation in the Aspen Parkland Ecoregion of the PPR: …

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit with variable clinical severity. Increasing evidence suggests that acne may represent a localized inflammatory condition with potential systemic inflammatory involvement. Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis protein has been implicated in abnormal keratinocyte and sebocyte survival, while C-reactive protein (CRP) is a biomarker of systemic inflammation.
Aim of the study: To evaluate serum survivin and CRP levels in cases with AV compared to healthy controls and to assess their relationship with disease severity.
Subjects and methods: This case-control study included 45 patients with clinically diagnosed AV and 45 …
