Extended-Stability Runge–Kutta Solvers For Neural Ode: Faster, More Stable Training With Predictable Compute, Gavin Lee Goodship, Stephen O’Sullivan, Luis Miralles-Pechuán Jan 2026

Extended-Stability Runge–Kutta Solvers For Neural Ode: Faster, More Stable Training With Predictable Compute, Gavin Lee Goodship, Stephen O’Sullivan, Luis Miralles-Pechuán

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Neural ordinary differential equations provide a principled continuous depth formulation, yet their practical use is often limited by slow, numerically fragile, and computationally expensive training caused by the weaknesses of standard ODEs solvers. We introduce extended stability Runge Kutta methods, which are explicit fixed step solvers designed to remain stable at much larger step sizes than classical schemes such as RK4 or adaptive methods such as Dormand Prince. By enlarging the stability region of the real axis, these solvers cross the integration horizon with far fewer steps, providing deterministic computation, greatly reduced function evaluation cost, and smoother optimization dynamics. Across …

A Virtual Model Of Data Centre Cooling, Younis Osama Abdelsalam, Tim Persoons, Sajad Alimohammadi Jan 2026

A Virtual Model Of Data Centre Cooling, Younis Osama Abdelsalam, Tim Persoons, Sajad Alimohammadi

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This study presents a calibrated, hybrid spreadsheet-based model developed to simulate the cooling energy consumption of a commercial-scale data centre in Dublin, Ireland. The model leverages five years of high-resolution, sub metered data, including chilled water flow rates, ambient conditions, and IT electrical load, offering a rare empirical foundation for system-level energy analysis. Existing modelling approaches often rely on simplified laboratory case studies, synthetic datasets, or isolated component analysis, limiting their relevance to operational facilities. This study introduces an innovative hybrid modelling framework that bridges the gap between black-box machine learning and rigid physics-only simulations. A key innovation is the …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Despite the growing interest in utilizing poultry processing by-products as sustainable sources of gelatine, the influence of extraction conditions on gelatine quality, structure, and functionality remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the effect of acetic acid concentration on the yield, molecular characteristics, and structural-thermal properties of gelatin extracted from chicken feet and heads. Gelatine was extracted using 3 v/v% (CBBG3) and 5 v/v% (CBBG5) acetic acid. CBBG5 produced a higher extraction yield (13.2%) than CBBG3 (10.49%), indicating enhanced collagen solubilization at higher acid concentration. However, CBBG5 also showed higher ash content (4.45 w/w% vs. 2.40 w/w%) and more pronounced yellow-green …

Corporations’ First Amendment Rights And Algorithmic Cocoons, Sol Murgui Orsucci Jan 2026

Corporations’ First Amendment Rights And Algorithmic Cocoons, Sol Murgui Orsucci

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

This Note examines how corporate First Amendment doctrine applies to algorithmic systems that curate commercial information and public discourse across online platforms. Courts have increasingly treated ranking, recommendation, and moderation practices as exercises of protected editorial judgment. At the same time, the Court has justified protection for corporate speech in part by reference to listener-centered interests in access to information and competitive comparison. This Note argues that the interaction between these doctrinal strands and contemporary algorithmic intermediation reveals a structural tension. Data-driven optimization can generate individualized informational environments—what this Note terms “algorithmic cocoons”—in which users encounter content, offers, and prices …

Balancing Accuracy And Discovery: A Bias-Aware Evaluation Framework For Music Recommendation, Jose Luis Maidana Jan 2026

Balancing Accuracy And Discovery: A Bias-Aware Evaluation Framework For Music Recommendation, Jose Luis Maidana

ICT

Music recommender systems play an important role in helping users navigate large catalogues, but their reliance on historical interaction data can reinforce popularity bias and limit the visibility of less popular, long-tail items. This research develops and evaluates a bias-aware framework for assessing and mitigating popularity bias in music recommendation using implicit user-item interaction data. The study first quantifies popularity bias through inequality and long-tail metrics, before evaluating two baseline recommender approaches: a non-personalised Most-Popular model and a personalised Matrix Factorisation model. Their performance is assessed using both predictive accuracy measures, including Precision, Recall and NDCG, and beyond-accuracy measures relating …

Tracking Antibiotic Resistant And Multidrug Resistant Bacteria And Antibiotic Resistance Genes In The Huron River Watershed: A Vital Water Resource In Southeast Michigan, Evan Siemienkiewicz

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global public health concern that extends beyond clinical settings and into natural freshwater environments, where resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can persist and disseminate through watersheds. Despite growing recognition of freshwater systems as environmental reservoirs of resistance, no published studies have examined antibiotic resistance within the Huron River watershed in Southeast Michigan. Water samples were collected monthly from May through October 2025 at 10 sites along the Huron River. E. coli and Enterococcus isolates were evaluated for resistance to eight antibiotics using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, and environmental DNA was analyzed by …

Rigidity And Risk: A State Space Grid Analysis Of Parent-Child Interactions, Sleep, And Early Internalizing Symptoms, Brianna Trudeau

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background. Internalizing problems in preschoolers are prevalent, cause significant impairment, and often persist into later development. Emerging research uses state space grid (SSG) methodology to examine dynamic parent-child interaction processes that may contribute to these difficulties. While affective rigidity has been linked to maladaptive outcomes, less is known about behavioral rigidity and its association with child internalizing symptoms.

Objective. This study examined whether dyadic behavioral rigidity could be represented as a latent construct across tasks, whether behavioral rigidity predicted preschool internalizing symptoms, and whether rigidity mediated the relationship between parent and child sleep problems and child internalizing symptoms.

Method. Participants …

Against Doctrinal Siloing: Harmonizing Fiscal Federalism And The U.S. Constitution, David Gamage, Darien Shanske Jan 2026

Against Doctrinal Siloing: Harmonizing Fiscal Federalism And The U.S. Constitution, David Gamage, Darien Shanske

Faculty Publications

This Essay argues that constitutional law’s treatment of fiscal federalism has fractured into a bewildering collection of doctrinal silos. Federal spending that pressures states, federal preemption of state taxes, the Dormant Commerce Clause, sovereign immunity, Section 5 of the Fourteenth Amendment, and the federal taxing power are all analyzed through distinct tests, even when they implicate the same basic conflict between federal authority and state fiscal autonomy. The result is not just theoretical confusion but inconsistent constitutional answers. Current doctrine can protect states from comparatively modest liabilities while leaving uncertain whether Congress may displace large swaths of state revenue authority. …

Exploring The Impact Of Mindful Social Media Literacy Instruction On Self-Regulated Smartphone Use, Catherine Coons

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Smartphone and social media addiction, and increasingly high rates of anxiety and other mental health challenges, afflict contemporary undergraduate students more than previous generations of college students. The mental health challenges faced by students directly affect their academic potential, influencing their ability to concentrate, maintain confidence, get adequate sleep, and sustain overall well-being. Despite the increasing prevalence of these issues, universities often lack sufficient resources, services, and trained staff to support this growing student population adequately.

This study examines the impact of mindfulness-based social media literacy instruction on curbing problematic social media use in college students. While extensive research has …

Evidence For A Spectral Break Or Curvature In The Spectrum Of Astrophysical Neutrinos From 5 Tev To 10 Pev, Karen Andeen Jan 2026

Evidence For A Spectral Break Or Curvature In The Spectrum Of Astrophysical Neutrinos From 5 Tev To 10 Pev, Karen Andeen

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

We report improved measurements of the all flavor astrophysical neutrino spectrum with IceCube by combining complementary neutrino samples in two independent analyses. Both analyses show evidence of a harder spectrum at energies below  ∼30  TeV compared to higher energies where the spectrum is well characterized by a power law. The spectrum is better described by a log parabola or a broken power law, the latter being the preferred model. Both, however, reject a single power law over an energy range 5 TeV–10 PeV with a significance  >4⁢𝜎, providing new constraints on properties of cosmic neutrino sources.

Advancing Ultrahigh Carbon Steel Characterization: A Metaheuristic-Tuned Deep Learning Approach, Walaa Omar El-Farouk Badr, Hossam El-Din Mostafa, Rania Elbana

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Accurate classification of ultrahigh carbon steel (UHCS) microstructures is essential for elucidating processing-structure-property relationships and enhancing material performance. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer powerful automated classification, navigating their complex, high-dimensional hyperparameter spaces present a significant computational bottleneck. To advance automated materials characterization, this study proposes a metaheuristic-tuned deep learning approach for robust and efficient microstructure classification. Two architectures, VGG16 and MobileNetV2, were evaluated under both pretrained and fine-tuned configurations, with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) applied for systematic hyperparameter tuning. Results show that GA substantially improves the performance of fine-tuned VGG16, achieving …

Framing Inclusive Heritage Urbanism Reconfiguring Publicness In Mosque-Centered Precincts In Historic Cairo, Ghada Sayed Ghazala Jan 2026

Framing Inclusive Heritage Urbanism Reconfiguring Publicness In Mosque-Centered Precincts In Historic Cairo, Ghada Sayed Ghazala

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Mosque-centered precincts in historical cities face a continuous tension between touristic-led redevelopments, security management policies and urban life of commons. Recently in Historic Cairo state-led interventions occur in major mosque-centered settings with upgrading intent by enhancing visual order, crowd control and visitors’ experience, yet socio-spatial inclusivity stayed insufficiently incorporated in those implications. This study discourses this gap by initiating the Heritage Socio-spatial Inclusivity Framework (HSIF) to assess inclusivity across major mosque-centered realms – AL-Hussein Mosque & Al-Sayida Zeinab Mosque precincts -

HSIF synthesized urban design & heritage conservation concepts through indicators covering aspects like communal livability, users experience, governance & …

Finite Element Analysis Of Oxygen Transport In Tissue And Capillaries With A Second Order Metabolic Consumption, Vikash Ramcharitar, Sreedhara Rao Gunakala, Reddappa Bandi, Donna M. G. Dyer, Jagdesh Ramnanan Jan 2026

Finite Element Analysis Of Oxygen Transport In Tissue And Capillaries With A Second Order Metabolic Consumption, Vikash Ramcharitar, Sreedhara Rao Gunakala, Reddappa Bandi, Donna M. G. Dyer, Jagdesh Ramnanan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study presents a numerical investigation into the oxygen transport through a Krogh-type capillary-tissue model with second-order tissue metabolism. The governing non-linear equations are solved by implementing a Galerkin finite element method with a fixed-point iteration scheme. The resulting code and solution algorithm were successfully validated against available analytical solutions for zeroth- and first-order kinetics, showing very good agreement. Numerical simulations indicated, that under the parameters investigated, relative to zeroth- and first-order kinetics, a second-order metabolism leads to less overall oxygen consumption within the tissue phase. This yields higher oxygen partial pressures at the outer tissue boundary and higher oxygen …

Smart Dynamic Concrete: Effect Of Coarse Aggregate Size Distribution On Fresh, Mechanical And Durability Properties, Venu Sipelli, Kamineni Aditya, Shravya Sripadapu

Mansoura Engineering Journal

SDC is a self-flowing concrete that demonstrates improved material efficiency through optimized aggregate gradation. Unlike SCC, which relies on high powder content for improved flowability, SDC provides improved flowability by optimized aggregate gradation, making it a promising alternative to SCC. This paper presents the fresh, mechanical, and durability performance of M40-grade SDC using OPC 53 grade cement, GGBS, CRF, and polycarboxylate-based superplasticizer. A constant cementitious content of 470 kg/m³ and water–cement ratio of 0.38 were maintained. The fresh, mechanical, and durability performances of SDC using three types of coarse aggregate combinations, namely, 70% 10 mm + 30% 20 mm, 75% …

Mathematical Analysis Of The Slip Flow Due To A Cylinder Oscillating In Different Directions With Independent Amplitudes, Alana Sankar, Karim Rahaman Jan 2026

Mathematical Analysis Of The Slip Flow Due To A Cylinder Oscillating In Different Directions With Independent Amplitudes, Alana Sankar, Karim Rahaman

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study examines the incompressible viscous fluid flow in an infinitely long cylinder, with slip occurring at the cylinder’s surface, undergoing longitudinal and torsional oscillations of independent amplitudes. The proposed governing equations are solved subject to the Basset slip condition. Analytical expressions for the velocity field, shear stresses, drag force on the cylinder, work done and the drag coefficient are obtained. Velocity components, drag and work done are illustrated graphically. The magnitude of the velocity increases as slip decreases and as the frequency of oscillations increases. Drag increases in both directions as the slip decreases and as the frequency of …

A Multi-Valued Fixed Point Theorem For Quasi-Contractions On A Cone Metric Space, Regina Mahadewsing, Sreedhara Rao Gunakala, Vikash Ramcharitar, Reddappa Bandi, Akhenaton Daaga, Thameem Basha H Jan 2026

A Multi-Valued Fixed Point Theorem For Quasi-Contractions On A Cone Metric Space, Regina Mahadewsing, Sreedhara Rao Gunakala, Vikash Ramcharitar, Reddappa Bandi, Akhenaton Daaga, Thameem Basha H

Mansoura Engineering Journal

A set-valued (multi-valued)  mapping  assigns to each  a nonempty closed and bounded subset . Using this notion, the present work broadens classical fixed point theory by proving a fixed point theorem for multi-valued quasi-contractive mappings in cone metric spaces. The developed argument extends several earlier results that were restricted to single-valued maps and more familiar set-valued settings, thereby providing a wider analytical framework within ordered Banach-space structures. These contributions enrich fixed point theory in generalized metric environments and can be relevant to problems in nonlinear analysis and optimization

Performance Of Foamed Concrete Before And After Fire Conditions: A Review, Poles Bahgat, Mohamed Kohail, A. Fathy, A. Afifi Jan 2026

Performance Of Foamed Concrete Before And After Fire Conditions: A Review, Poles Bahgat, Mohamed Kohail, A. Fathy, A. Afifi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Foamed concrete is defined as a type of concrete distinguished by its workability, low density, and insulating properties. It is used as building material. The objective of this review is to discuss the physical and mechanical characteristics and fire sensitivity of foamed concrete. Density influences the strength of concrete. The strength of concrete is between 2 and 3.5 MPa, which increased with the addition of gold mining waste, reaching approximately 35 MPa at optimal replacement levels.  There is a 60-70% reduction in strength for lightweight concrete with a density of 400-1200 kg/m³ compared to conventional concrete. The fire sensitivity of …

Boundaries Of Rules: Social Reactions To Legal Intervention, Francesco Parisi Jan 2026

Boundaries Of Rules: Social Reactions To Legal Intervention, Francesco Parisi

Articles

This chapter examines what happens at the boundaries of rules: when social practices acquire legal recognition, when legal rules seek to reshape social expectations, and when formal and informal enforcement operate together. The conventional economic model treats the expected formal sanction as the principal source of compliance. Although this model provides a fundamental benchmark, it captures only part of the effects of legal intervention. The taxonomy developed here identifies the different ways in which legal, moral, and social incentives may interact. The kinds of public and private enforcement through which individuals express norms shape the additive, nonadditive, and countervailing effects …

Heart Of Stone: Geomorphization Through Stone-Oriented Affects, Grace F. Foster Jan 2026

Heart Of Stone: Geomorphization Through Stone-Oriented Affects, Grace F. Foster

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis draws from the work of geologist Marcia Bjornerud to bring a scientific (specifically geologic) understanding of humanity’s relationship to our home planet to bear in a literary context. I employ Bjornerud’s term “geomorphization” to expand from inter-species kinship to inter-substance kinship and to establish stone as an active, lively subject without relying on anthropomorphization. Geomorphization as I define it refers to recognizing similarity between ourselves and stone/Earth on the basis of our stoniness rather than stone’s human-ness. Geomorphizing ourselves entails what Bjornerud calls “timefulness,” a geologic perspective on temporality that sees the past as continually acting in the …
